Clouds Around Galaxy Andromeda

Explanation: What are those red clouds surrounding the Andromeda galaxy? This galaxy, M31, is often imaged by planet Earth-based astronomers. As the nearest large spiral galaxy, it is a familiar sight with dark dust lanes, bright yellowish core, and spiral arms traced by clouds of bright blue stars. A mosaic of well-exposed broad and narrow-band image data, this deep portrait of our neighboring island universe offers strikingly unfamiliar features though, faint reddish clouds of glowing ionized hydrogen gas in the same wide field of view. Most of the ionized hydrogen clouds surely lie in the foreground of the scene, well within our Milky Way Galaxy. They are likely associated with the pervasive, dusty interstellar cirrus clouds scattered hundreds of light-years above our own galactic plane. Some of the clouds, however, occur right in the Andromeda galaxy itself, and some in M110, the small galaxy just below.

Central Asia identified as a key region for human ancestors

The interior of Central Asia has been identified as a key route for some of the earliest hominin migrations across Asia in a new study led by Dr. Emma Finestone, Assistant Curator of Human Origins at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Research Affiliate of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History.

The study’s findings indicate that the steppe, semi-arid and desert zones of Central Asia were once favorable environments for hominins and their dispersal into Eurasia.

An interdisciplinary team of scholars from institutions that span four continents set out to expand the limited knowledge of early hominin activity in the Central Asian lowlands. The team included Dr. Paul Breeze and Professor Nick Drake from Kings College London, Professor Sebastian Breitenbach from Northumbria University Newcastle, Professor Farhod Maksudov from the Uzbekistan Academy of the Sciences, and Professor Michael Petraglia from Griffith University in Queensland, Australia.

A Thought for Today

As pagans and witches from all walks of life and different witchcraft traditions we face who do we tell about our spiritual and magickal paths? Does it make us an imposter witch if we stay partly or fully in the broom closet?

This topic came up in a chat with my apprentices a week ago. There were 5 of us present in the chat and we each had a different viewpoint but the bottom line for all of us is it does not matter if we keep out paths to ourselves or tell people we are still “real” witches and pagans. What we feel inside our heart about the path we chose to walk is way more important than who we tell or do not tell. Our connection with the Goddesses and Gods is all that matters.

A Basic Spell

You may dress however is traditional or feels comfortable for you. Feel free to wear colors that match your intention, if you desire. Perform your spell on a corresponding day of the week and phase of the moon for the optimum beneficial energies.

Gather all of your materials (candles, holder, matches, symbols, tools, essential oils, gemstones, herbs/flowers/seeds/fruits) and set them and yourself in front of a sturdy, flat area. Feel free to drape a cloth over your working area in a corresponding color to your intention, if you wish. This will be your altar.

Envision your altar and yourself surrounded in a large bubble of pure, white protective light. You may also sprinkle a protective circle of salt around you and your working area, in a clockwise direction.

Open your essential oil and breathe in the aroma. Drip a few drops onto your fingers. Rub the oil onto the candle from the top to the center and from the bottom to the center, all the way around until you cover the entire candle. As you anoint the candle, visualize your intentions into the candle. Place the candle in the candle holder and set it in front of you on a flat surface.

Sprinkle some of the herbs/flowers/seeds into your hand. Feel it’s energies. Breathe in it’s scent. Focus on your intentions, building the energies in your body up, as you connect with the energies of the herbs/flowers/seeds. Sprinkle them around the candle in a circular pattern. Continue with any other symbols or natural substances you are using, including any gemstones, fruits, and the like. Place them around the candle along with the herbs.

Light the candle with a match and extinguish the match with a flick of your wrist. Set the match in a fireproof dish. Continue to build your energies up as you visualize your intention. Focus on your intention and hold the image in your mind. Focus on the feeling of achieving your goal. Hold the feeling in your heart. Recite any chants, directions, or affirmations at this time. Mesh your images and your feelings with each other and release them both into the atmosphere.

When you are finished, allow your energies to calm back down. Then unbind your working area by envisioning the circle opening up and sweeping any salt and energies away in a counter-clockwise direction. Your work is done. Allow yourself to focus on other thoughts and let the magic do it’s work.

Allow your candle to burn all the way down, or extinguish the flame with a candle snuffer. Gather all of your materials and collect your natural substances. You have infused these items with your intentions and energies, so you will have to cleanse any tools for future use and dispose of any natural substances and candle stubs. You may bury your natural materials in a spot of uncultivated earth, or sprinkle them through the air in a sacred area. Remember to ground yourself and your energies when you are finished.

Milky Way and Zodiacal Light over Australian Pinnacles

Explanation: What strange world is this? Earth. In the foreground of the featured image are the Pinnacles, unusual rock spires in Nambung National Park in Western Australia. Made of ancient sea shells (limestone), how these human-sized picturesque spires formed remains a topic of research. The picturesque panorama was taken in 2017 September. A ray of zodiacal light, sunlight reflected by dust grains orbiting between the planets in the Solar System, rises from the horizon near the image center. Arching across the top is the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy. The planets Jupiter and Saturn, as well as several famous stars are also visible in the background night sky.

What Is the Meaning of the New Moon?

This moon phase is a time to rest, recharge and renew

New Moons are special, as a time to unfold into your real self, the timeless one. If it’s true that we rest between lives, in our real home, the New Moon is a time to rest, before the next cycle of happenings.

Because of that, it’s one to get juiced up again, by merging with that renewing, spiritual source. And like other moments of soul searching, like the Sun’s “New Moon” at Winter Solstice, it’s a time to remember who you are and get guidance on the road ahead.

When the Moon is new, the Luminaries — the Sun and Moon — are aligned in the same Zodiac sign. That makes it a charged time with concentrated energies of that sign. A New Moon is a symbolic point of attention and a symbolic portal for new beginnings.

New Moons are a great time to set intentions for things you’d like to create, develop, cultivate, make manifest. Following the Moon
When you tune into the Moon’s phases, it’s reassuring to know that there are many chances during the year to tap into lunar energy. Like the tides, the Moon ebbs and flows, a rhythm that women understand intimately. New Moons are a blank page on which to speak your dreams out loud, and Full Moons are for taking action and celebrating the fruit of your efforts.

In the chaotic and temporal world, looking to something larger that is also part of yourself can fill you with awe and make you feel connected. For whatever path you’re on, opening to working with planetary energies links you to the power of the divine.

Getting Ready
It’s a good idea to spend some time reflecting in the days leading up to the new Moon. Knowing exactly what you want to draw into your life is not always easy. Part of preparing for the new Moon is making sure you are clear about your intentions. Sometimes it’s a quality you’d like to cultivate like forgiveness, courage — other times it’s a more specific request for a promotion at work or a new place to live.

What Is a New Moon Ritual?
This depends on your personal tastes, the pace of your life and the time you have to devote to it. Some simply light a candle, while others gather objects and pictures for their altar. Try writing your intentions on a 7-day candle and leaving it in a prominent (and safe) place. With a candle, you can return to it and relight it while meditating on your intentions.

Ritual helps focus your entire being on the quest at hand. In the days leading up to the new Moon, you might gather pictures and totems that symbolize your goal. Creating a New Moon collage gives you a visual reminder of your dreams.

What Does It Mean for Each Different Zodiac Sign?
Every new Moon is different, and this gives you the chance to claim the energies of each different sign. Even if you don’t have planets in the sign for a given month, it falls somewhere in your birth chart. We each have elements of the entire Zodiac in our make-up, with some more emphasized than others. How Is It Different From the Full Moon?
The new Moon has a more inward feel, has a void or empty quality, and therefore can be frightening to those not comfortable with uncertainty. Can you learn to trust the dark? The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waning Crescent phase. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this part of the Moon cycle, the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. This phase is best viewed an hour or 2 before the sunrise and can be quite beautiful if you’re willing to get up early. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.

NGC 1499: The California Nebula

Explanation: Drifting through the Orion Arm of the spiral Milky Way Galaxy, this cosmic cloud by chance echoes the outline of California on the west coast of the United States. Our own Sun also lies within the Milky Way’s Orion Arm, only about 1,500 light-years from the California Nebula. Also known as NGC 1499, the classic emission nebula is around 100 light-years long. The California Nebula shines with the telltale reddish glow characteristic of hydrogen atoms recombining with long lost electrons. The electrons have been stripped away, ionized by energetic starlight. Most likely providing the energetic starlight that ionizes much of the nebular gas is the bright, hot star Xi Persei just to the right of the nebula. A popular target for astrophotographers, this deep image reveals the glowing nebula, obscuring dust, and stars across a 3 degree wide field of view. The California nebula lies toward the constellation Perseus, not far from the Pleiades.
