Moon Alert

Avoid shopping or making important decisions after 11 PM EST today (8 PM PST). The Moon is in Libra.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This is an excellent day to sit down with partners and close friends to discuss practicalities and future travel plans. Note: It’s a wonderful day to study; and it’s a particularly good day to finish a paper or manuscript. “At last!”

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Discussions about shared property, debt, taxes, inheritances and insurance matters will be productive today because people are in a practical frame of mind. They want to get the job done, and they want things to be done correctly. Simple Simon.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Today you will have a practical, serious discussion. This is a good idea! Make a point of sitting down with someone to make plans at a concrete level and figure out ways to execute them in a realistic way. Listen to the advice of experience.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Today you find it easy to work and get things done! Your mind is focused, and you’re motivated to accomplish as much as possible. Discussions about health (perhaps related to teeth, bones and joints) will be productive. You might also address pet issues.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

If you work in the arts or the entertainment world, this is an excellent day to study with a master or a teacher. It’s the perfect day to practice so that you can hone your technique because you have the dedication, patience and motivation to do this.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

A parent or older family member might have excellent advice for you today. (It certainly never hurts to listen, and it’s always courteous and respectful.) This is a good day to discuss home repairs or how to fix something and make your home routine run more smoothly.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You can plan and create schedules today. This is not the day to relax and kick back and have a good time. Au contraire! Talk to others to learn ways of doing things so you have the practical knowledge to set things in motion. Listen to the advice of someone older or more experienced.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You will make great headway in financial matters today because you’re in a sensible, practical frame of mind. You might see ways to cut costs. You might establish a budget for yourself. You might see better ways to use your resources and make the most of what you have.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Today even if you don’t work, you will spend time reflecting about serious matters because you’re in a serious frame of mind. Take advantage of this energy while it lasts so that you can get as much done as possible. (A disciplined mind is a shame to waste.)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Your efforts to do research or study history or get information from the past will produce excellent results today. For starters, you’re in the right frame of mind. You’re serious. You won’t overlook details. Your approach to everything will be analytical and logical. Bravo!

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

A discussion with someone older and perhaps more experienced will be beneficial for you today. Even if this is not your first rodeo, there’s always someone who knows more or someone who has some helpful tips you can use. Be open to hearing whatever comes your way.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Talk to parents, bosses, VIPs and the police to get the results you want today. People will listen to you; and vice versa, you will listen to them. Seek their advice because you will benefit from guidance concerning the larger world.

Celtic Tree Calendar Month of the Elder – a tree sacred to the Celts

I am sorry I got the current Celtic calendar month posted a week late. I was down with allergies and (this was a PERSONAL CHOICE) getting my covid vaccine booster.

From Ireland-Calling.com

In Ireland, the elder was considered a sacred tree and, like the hawthorn, it was forbidden to cut one down. The elder tree was prized for its many uses culinary, medicinal and mystical.

Both the flowers and berries of the elder can be used to make wine. Elderflower wine was said to be drunk at the Beltane celebrations and elderberries were made into a wine at Samhain which was consumed to promote divination and hallucinations.

Poisonous

The seeds, bark, leaves and flowers of the elder can be poisonous as is the unripe fruit so special care must have been taken when preparing such beverages.

Ruis, R, Elder is the fifteenth letter in the ogham alphabet, Ruis, and the thirteenth and final month of the Celtic tree calendar.

The superstition of never cutting down an elder bush was not unique to Ireland. In Denmark, peasants never chopped an elder because Hyldemor, The Elder Mother, lived in the trunk.

This belief was possibly brought to the East of England by the Vikings and, even today, in Lincolnshire people ask permission from ‘The Old Lady’ before taking cuttings from the tree.

Christians gave elder a bad reputation

Christians believed that the elder tree was the tree that Judas hanged himself from, therefore making it unlucky. Some also believed the cross was made of elder wood. In fact the Christians gave the elder a bad reputation in general.

It was during Christian times that the elder became most associated with witches and many stories of ‘elder-witches’ spread throughout Ireland and Britain. This developed into an association with the devil.

To burn elder wood in your fire would bring the devil into your house.

Celts believed it protected the from evil spirits

It seems more likely that rather than a tree to be feared the elder was a highly respected tree in the old Celtic land. It was said to protect from evil spirits as well as inviting them.

Cradles were built from elder wood to protect babies and elder bushes were often planted around cattle to keep them healthy. It was believed that planting an elder near your house would also protect it from lightning.

At the same time, a flute made of elder could be used to summon spirits and, in Scotland, if you stand under an elder tree at Samhain you will be able to see the fairies riding by.

Here are 12 religious holidays believers celebrate in December

From deseret.com

Note: This article has been updated to reflect this year’s dates for these holidays.

December has finally arrived, and with it comes an abundance of colorful lights, vibrant wreaths and a bunch of family parties.

Most of these celebrations are inspired by Christmas and Hanukkah, the two major religious holidays celebrated by Christians and Jewish believers, respectively, in America.

But, with an increasing amount of interfaith marriages, many American families have had to figure out how to celebrate both holidays, according to InterfaithFamily, a support website for interfaith families.

“Though the character of Christmas has changed significantly in modern times, Christmas has never been, forgive the expression, a small potatoes holiday like Hanukkah. As Jews are increasingly accepted into the mainstream of majority-Christian cultures, and marry into Christian families, there is no avoiding the primacy of Christmas.”

But those aren’t the only religious holidays this month that some families may have to celebrate together. In fact, the Interfaith Calendar organization lists a number of religious holidays for the month of December. Here are 12 holidays with a little explanation on each.

Dec. 6: Saint Nicholas Day — Christian

This holiday honors the birth of Saint Nicholas, the saint who serves as a role model for gift-giving and is commonly known as Santa Claus, according to Interfaith Calendar.

Dec. 8: Rohatsu (Bodhi Day) — Buddhist

This holiday celebrates the historical Buddha’s decision and vow to sit under the Bodhi tree until he reached spiritual enlightenment. It’s celebrated through meditation and is embraced similar to how Christians celebrate Christmas to honor Jesus Christ.

Dec. 8: Immaculate Conception — Catholic

In the lead-up to Jesus’ birthday celebration on Christmas, Catholics celebrate the day of Immaculate Conception to honor his mother Mary, who they say was preserved from original sin for her entire life.

Dec. 10 to 18: Hanukkah — Judaism

This is the eight-day Jewish festival of lights, which celebrates the Maccabean revolt in Egypt. Eight candles are lit with a menorah to honor the holiday.

Dec. 12: Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe — Catholic

This is a primarily Catholic holiday celebrated by Mexicans and Americans of Mexican descent that honors the reported appearance of the Virgin Mary in Mexico City, according to Interfaith Calendar.

Dec. 16: Posadas Navidenas — Christian

This is a primarily Hispanic Christian holiday that commends Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem to give birth to Jesus, according to Interfaith Calendar.

Dec. 21: Solstice — Wicca/Pagan

Solstice is the point in the year “when the earth is most inclined away from the sun. It is the most southern or northern point depending on the hemisphere,” according to Interfaith Calendar. Pagans and Wicca believers will celebrate that event through Yule, in which believers also honor “the winter-born king, symbolized by the rebirth of the sun,” Interfaith Calendar explained.

Dec. 25: Christmas — Christian

In Motion: Uranus and Moons

Video Credit: David Campbell (U. Hertfordshire), Bayfordbury ObservatoryExplanation: What’s that moving across the sky? A planet just a bit too faint to see with the unaided eye: Uranus. The gas giant out past Saturn was tracked earlier this month near opposition — when it was closest to Earth and at its brightest. The featured video captured by the Bayfordbury Observatory in Hertfordshire, UK is a four-hour time-lapse showing Uranus with its four largest moons in tow: Titania, Oberon, Umbriel and Ariel. Uranus’ apparent motion past background stars is really dominated by Earth’s own orbital motion around our Sun. The cross seen centered on Uranus is called a diffraction spike and is caused by light diffracting around the four arms that hold one of the telescope‘s mirrors in place. The rotation of the diffraction spikes is not caused by the rotation of Uranus but, essentially, by the rotation of the Earth. During the next few months Uranus itself will be visible with binoculars, but, as always, to see its moons will require a telescope.

What kind of spells could we cast on a Monday?

As it’s a day ruled by the Moon, which is all about feminine energy, Monday is the perfect day to cast fertility and feminine beauty spells.

It’s also a wonderful day to consecrate spiritual, magickal tools and to plant seeds for new projects and dreams.

Which planet influences Monday

The Moon influences Monday. Yes, ancient populations have always followed the lunar and solar cycles, including the Egyptians, the Sumerians, the Babylonians, and the Jews. Today we follow the solar calendar, but the Moon…

Weekly Horoscope Sunday, November 28 to Saturday, December 4, 2021

All Signs

This week begins in a dreamy way that makes us start to wonder about future goals. “What if?” As the week progresses, many of these ideas will start to become a reality. Therefore, this is the week to be confident. Shoot for the stars! Goethe said, “There is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents … Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now!”

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This is a perfect time to hatch plans for future travel and opportunities to explore your world because these ideas will appeal to you now. Not only do you want to expand your world through travel, many of you also want to expand your world through further education and training. What exciting schools might you attend? Do you want to learn a new language? With Venus at the top of your chart, authority figures are receptive to your suggestions and applications. (Good to know.) Meanwhile, this is a passionate week. However, many of you will also use this energy to help others, especially those who are less fortunate. (Can’t go wrong there.)

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This is an excellent time to dream big and conjure up all kinds of future possibilities because with Jupiter at the top of your chart, this is a fortunate time for you. People see you as successful. Many things will go your way. Furthermore, Saturn at the top of your chart indicates that you are in a time of harvest, when you are reaping the benefits of the last 30 years of your life. (Certainly, the last fifteen.) How timely then, to define some goals this week or at least, to dream big! Travel for pleasure appeals. Your focus on shared property, debt and insurance issues continues to be strong. Tension with partners will ease this week because Neptune softens potential conflicts. What do you want your future to hold?

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Many planets benefit you right now. Some are supportive of you, especially in a practical way, which means gifts, goodies and favours from others will come to you. Your desire to travel and explore the world is strong, which means this is only one area where you can conjure up dreams for the future. Fiery Mars is in the part of your chart that will energize your work efforts. This is an excellent week for creativity, goalsetting and inspiration. By the end of the week, you’re ready to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. You know what you want to achieve and you believe that anything is possible. And it is! (Be patient with partners and close friends while the Sun is opposite your sign. This creates a natural polarity that encourages conflict.)

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

It’s appropriate for you to think about future goals and dream big because you are energized to work hard now. You are very hands-on with your approach to things because you want to be efficient and effective in everything you do. You want to make your actions count. Sometimes inertia holds you back from beginning. You like to cling to familiarity. Read Goethe’s comments in the All Signs section above. He points out that once you commit to a decision, amazing things will unfold – even things you never dreamed would be possible. You have been getting along with less, but you have survived. About 18 months from now, your reputation will be shining! What are you going to do to deserve this? (Apparently something.)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a playful time with increased activity with kids plus a strong interest in the arts, the entertainment world and a chance to express your creative talents. (The stuff you like.) This week is an excellent time to think about how you can achieve something that is important to you. First visualize what might seem to be impossible. That way you get a handle on how it looks. Define it. Name it. Once you can name it – you’re halfway there. As the week progresses, you can embrace a plan that can unfold in a doable way. This year your focus is on external goals – more than it’s been in the last 17 years.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Your focus on home and family continues, especially because family discussions are important at this time. In particular, they could involve home improvements and repairs. Many of you are entertaining at home as well, and some of you are able to grab a vacation. Yay! However, at the beginning of this dreamy week, you will start to visualize things that you would like to see happen in the future. These things could be related to your career or your work or they might be fun possibilities that offer escape and exciting adventure. You still have wonderful opportunities to improve your health, as well as improve your job. If you’re successful in doing this – what’s next? A marathon?

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a busy active time for you due to short trips, errands, appointments plus, conversations with siblings, relatives and neighbours. Many of you are reading, writing and studying more than usual as well. Nevertheless, this week offers you chances to dream about future possibilities. Some of you will focus on money, cash flow and how to feel more financially secure. Many of you have increased responsibilities with kids or young people at this time. Many of you are also redecorating or entertaining at home and enjoying the beauty of your home. Since these areas are a strong focus, perhaps they will be sources of where you might decide to dream big? Ideas?

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This week, Mars is in your sign dancing with dreamy Neptune, which prompts you to imagine possible futures for yourself. It makes you focus on ambitious goals. Naturally, this triggers your desire to brainstorm all kinds of possibilities for your future. As the week wears on, you will see ways that some of these dreams can become a reality. You might set about implementing certain plans in a way that they will come to fruition. This energy continues all week. By Friday, you are still enthusiastic about what is possible for your future. This is a wonderful thing! Read the quote by Goethe in All Signs above. The key is commitment to a plan!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is an interesting week because you like to think about your future a lot and in particular, you like to dream big. Well, it so happens that the planetary influences this week push absolutely everyone in that direction. You will feel right at home thinking about future goals and ways to achieve them. With the Sun and Mercury in your sign, this is the perfect time to define clearly what you want for your future. Meanwhile, Venus will attract money and gifts to you this week. At this point in your life, residential moves and job changes are par for the course. Naturally, this leads to new worlds full of new possibilities. It’s exciting!

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This week will suit you perfectly because this is one of the best times all year to think about future goals. More than most, you take a long range of view of things because you are practical, and also perhaps unconsciously, because you know you are a long-lived sign. Ideas about finances, making money and matters about your financial security are things you might think about this week. You might also see ways to help a charitable organization or those who are less fortunate. Meanwhile, with Venus in your sign, you are unusually charming and diplomatic with everyone.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is a fortunate time for you because lucky Jupiter is in your sign, which is something that can happen only once every 12 years. Meanwhile, this is a stage in your life when you are setting off on a new path of re-inventing yourself. What could be more timely than this particular week that encourages daydreams, visualizing goals and then suddenly, seeing that these goals are actually doable! Your ambition is aroused now because Mars is at the top of your chart. Meanwhile, you are interacting with friends and groups more than usual. Why not bounce your ideas off someone to get their feedback? (A secret affair is likely for some of you.)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

You will continue to make a fabulous impression on everyone because the Sun is at the top of your chart casting you (symbolically speaking) in a flattering spotlight. This is why bosses, parents and VIPs are so impressed with you. This is the perfect week to visualize what you want for your future. You are an imaginative sign, and you have great visionary powers. Presently, you’re letting go of many things – people, places and possessions because you’re in a state of transition. But you are obviously heading for a whole new beginning in about a year. When you open those future doors – where do you want them to lead?

Plant portraits

The illustrations in medieval herbals are beautiful and mysterious. But if you know how to read them, they also convey a wealth of knowledge about the plants they portray.

From WelcomeCollection.com

The illustrated herbal has an almost unbroken line of descent from the ancient Greeks to the Middle Ages. The tradition owes much to a work by the Greek physician Dioscorides called ‘De Materia Medica’ (50–70 CE), which describes around 1,000 medicines, largely derived from plants, along with some animals and mineral substances.

‘De Materia Medica’ was circulated throughout the European and Islamic worlds. During that time it was translated, embellished and added to in commentaries and copies for local use. In Europe, this tradition developed into the medieval herbal, created in monasteries, usually by …

NOVEMBER 24 birthday horoscope predicts that you are a Sagittarius who is straight up and but optimistic. What others consider as being blunt and hurtful, you say it’s honest real talk. You never actually mean anyone harm.

The November 24 birthday personality is a positive and adventure seeking individual who loves the outdoors. You love exploring new lands and discovering new people. In short, those of you born on this day love life!

As the November 24 zodiac sign is Sagittarius, you have a charming personality. Your inner beauty shines right through you. You have strong ties to your spiritual beliefs and are a bright individual.

Your friends certainly think so, and you have a lot of friends. However, the November 24 horoscope suggests that you attract lovers who are not right for you or rather they are not like you. Sometimes, you have difficulty committing to someone who doesn’t share your views.

Your family, however, say you have remained close to them and find solace in traditional values. You may be too dependent on your loved ones especially if you have children.

This Sagittarius birthday as a parent tends to hang on to her/his “babies” for too long. There comes a time in every parent’s life that they must let go so their children can grow. It’s the only way to have experienced adults who can be productive and successful in life.

As far as the health of the November 24 birthday personality is concerned, you tend to take care of yourself, but you use limited resources. Although eating a balanced and wholesome meal constitutes some effort in the right direction, it is not enough.

Finding a workout plan just for you is not as hard as it used to be. You don’t even have to go to the gym anymore. Personal trainers are at your fingertips with today’s technology. Incorporating a fitness plan into your daily routine is feasible and very doable. Try a few at the same time and decide on one. Then try your second choice or maybe combine them all into one regimen tailored for your needs and desires.

The future of person who born on November 24 predicts that you make an excellent communicator or speaker/writer. You have all the makings for a job in public relations. Your attitude is great. You wear a smile all the time.

You aren’t afraid to stand up for yourself or for what you believe in. This could be an excellent choice for you. If that does not excite you, then perhaps a life of the entertainer or performance artist should. The media industry is wide open to someone with a November 24 birthday. It might as well be you in the spotlight.

This November 24 Sagittarius is generally in control… it’s where you want to be at all times. Usually, if you have to give up your freedom for a lover or a job, then you are not a happy camper. They may have to find a replacement for you sooner than later if this happens.

If today is your birthday, you are people who live life a bit on the wild side. Vacations are usually exciting trips that include something risky or dangerous like mountain climbing or skydiving. You love this kind of stuff.

On the other hand, you can be impulsive and highly intolerant of others. As the November 24 horoscope rightly says, you are likely suited to have a seat on the city council. At your best, the media is calling your name. There are a variety of things that you could be as you are vocal and you can write. As we talked about your health, you could stand some improvements, but you are on the right track.

When Isis Was Queen

Ancient Egyptian Goddess Isis and God Osiris

At the ancient Egyptian temples of Philae, Nubians gave new life to a vanishing religious tradition.

Hathor. When the Romans conquered Egypt in 30 B.C., the country’s system of temples, which had sustained religious traditions dating back more than 3,000 years, began to slowly wither away. Starved of the funds that pharaohs traditionally supplied to religious institutions, priests lost their vocation and temples fell into disuse throughout the country. The introduction of Christianity in the first century a.d. only hastened this process. But there was one exception to this trend: In the temples on the island of Philae in the Nile River, rites dedicated to the goddess Isis and the god Osiris continued to be celebrated in high style for some 500 years after the Roman conquest. This final flowering of ancient Egyptian religion was only possible because of the piety and support of Egypt’s neighbors to the south, the Nubians.

Philae lies just south of the Nile’s first cataract—one of six rapids along the river—which marked the historical border between ancient Egypt and Nubia, also known as Kush.
