Simple Exercise to Familiarize Yourself with the Elements

Simple Exercise to Familiarize Yourself with the Elements

To better feel and understand how these elements affect us, do this simple exercise:

Collect four items, one to represent each element and locate a compass. Weather permitting, find a spot outside – if not indoors will do.

Choose a spot where you will not be disturbed. Have your journal and something to write with.

Find north on the compass…and face that direction. If you are seated in a chair, move to face that direction.

First close your eyes and gather impressions about the compass point. After a few minutes, write down your impressions.

Now, hold the element you chose for Earth and the North, and close your eyes. Open your mind and feel the impressions of this element and how it relates to compass point. Think about how it corresponds to you and the Universe.

When you have finished write down your thoughts.

Continue through each element, facing the compass point that corresponds to the element…and finish by writing your feelings and thoughts on each one.

With the element of Spirit – focus on a golden light coming down from the heavens and filling you to the brim. When you have completed this, write down again, your thought and feelings.

Compare your notes with the properties of those elements described above. Were you connected to one or more of them? Did you feel more power in one direction? This will help you become attuned and more apart of the universe  you are apart of. Do this as a meditation every now and then also; to remind yourself to simplify.

Water Magick – Shell Magick

Shell Magick

Shells hold universal energies. They can be used for spell work in the same manner as crystals or herbs:

Abalone:  The abalone shell is often featured on the Water Witch’s altar as a focal point. It can be used to hold smaller items, to burn things, or simply to add extra power to a spell

Clam:  Clam shells are used for purification and love spells. They can  be placed in charm bags

Conch:  Conch shells work best in love spells

Coral:  Coral works well in matters of health and healing

Cowries:  Sacred to the Orisha Oya, the cowrie shell has a prestigious magickal pedigree. Due to its vulva-like appearance, this shell is frequently used upon altars as a representation of the Goddess. Cowries work well in matters involving money and prosperity

Oysters:  Oyster shells work best in matters pertaining to luck. They are said to promote good fortune. They make wonderful additions to charm bags

Spell To Banish Anger

Spell To Banish Anger

This spell is performed beside flowing water. Anything from a small stream to a mighty river will do.

Ground and center as in other spells. Cast a circle by imagining a glowing circle of light surrounding you. Take a black stone and cup it in your hands. Raise it to your forehead, concentrating all of your anger and projecting it into the stone. Throw it as hard as you can into a body water, saying:

With this stone
Anger be gone.
Water bind it,
No one find it.

Ground or earth the power you drew upon at the beginning of the spell and open the circle.

The First Rule of White Magick: Do as you choose/harm no one

The First Rule of Magick:

You are free to do as you choose as long as you harm no one.

This rule sounds deceptively simple to keep. However, scientifically it has been shown that a butterfly fluttering its wings subtly alters the energies of the universe. Therefore any decision, act or spell must affect others. We should never use magick to interfere with the free will of others, though there are binding spells that can restrict the effects of a person’s negative behavior.

Of course in order to survive emotionally and sometimes to survive at all, you cannot always avoid hurting others in everyday life or in magick. So magick does involve a lot of careful thought and evaluation and usually relates to what is happening in our everyday lives.

Supposing you needed more money each month to pay the bills, You know a senior colleague at work is holding a comfortable, well-paid position under false pretences. She is leaving you to do her work and taking the credit. However justifiable your resentment you should not do a spell to get her fired. If you were subsequently offered her job you would never be happy in it because you got it by negative magick. You could instead do spells to raise your own positive profile at work so you do get offered promotions and also to take earthly steps to limit your colleague’s plagiarism. You could in addition, cast spells so that you would find a better-paid job where you were appreciated. Usually such free-loaders are noticed by higher management and may get moved on naturally.

Happy Thursday, dear friends! It seems like forever….

What are good beginner spells to start with?

ACACIA

Element:  Air

Deities:  Osiris, Astarte, Ishtar, Diana, Ra

Powers:  Protection, Psychic Powers

Ritual Uses:  The wood is used as fuel in sacred fires in India, and is also used in building temples.

When the wood is burned with sandalwood the psychic powers are stimulated. Acacia is also used in money and love spells, although in the latter case the outcome would be a platonic love.

Spirits of Air

Spirits of Air

The Elemental spirits associated with Air are called sylphs, and their ruler is named Peralda. The word sylph comes from the Greek word sylpha, which means “butterfly.” When you see butterflies fluttering on the wind, sylphs are inevitably nearby. Sylphs may be the easiest entities to invite to a ritual because air exists as easily in a tenth-floor apartment as it does in an outdoor circle. Sylphs especially tend to gravitate to creative endeavors, so they are most easily called by artists, writers, poets, and musicians. They inspire the creative spirit, much like muses, and aid in shaping clear communications. It isn’t unusual to feel a sylph touch your hand or toss your hair while you’re busy creating. Don’t be alarmed; they are just giving you some creative encouragement.

Sylphs stimulate mental balance, freedom, and curiosity. They assist us in coordinating our perceptions and in verbalizing them. They enhance the power of speech, music and the written word, especially poetry. They teach us about the relationships between all things, which allow us to see and know the great web that connects all of life. This, in turn, brings about a desire for greater harmony. Sylphs stimulate creativity, intuitiveness, and inventiveness, and they awaken the intellect. They can open us to the realm of ideas and help us with mystical experiences and world views.

Like the wind they dance on, sylphs are changeable, volatile and occasionally flighty. If you’ve ever experienced writer’s block, you know what it means to have the sylphs disappear and take their creative energy with them. But it’s easy to call them back.

Iron Protection Spells

Iron Protection Spells

Iron provides protection 24 hours a day, whether you are asleep or awake.

  • Bend a used horseshoe nail into a ring

  • An iron bracelet reinforces the magickal protection capacities of the hand

  • String iron beads and wear around neck and ankles

  • For protection while you sleep, slip a knife or horseshoe under you pillow

  • If you prefer not to keep anything that hard in bed, a sword or fireplace poker can be kept under the bed

  • No need to keep anything in or under the bed:  sleeping in a bed crafted from iron creates an island of safety, reinvigorating health, creativity and fertility while you sleep.

Iron Spells

Iron Spells

Iron repels evil of all kind. Most malevolent spirits cannot bear to be in its presence. In addition to providing protection, iron enhances and stimulates the growth of one’s personal magick powers, so that you are stronger and better able to protection yourself, requiring less outside spiritual protection. Iron also invigorates general vitality and energy.

Unblocking Spells

In some versions of the Sleeping Beauty story, the handsome prince would very much like to save Sleeping Beauty from her hundred years sleep but is initially unable because the road leading to her castle is obstructed with thorns. The prince can’t pass until he take his sword and cuts his own path. In other versions of the tale, his sword won’t cut; he’s unable to pass through the thicket until powerful fairies recognize his predicament and cut a road for him.

That’s exactly what unblocking or road opening spells do.

When your life seems stagnant, when opportunities always seem to peter out, when no viable alternatives seem to exist, when no roads open for you, you may have what is magically known as a blocked condition. Blocked conditions stem from a variety of causes.

  • Blockages may result from insufficient magick power your magickal gas tank is empty, therefore you can’t proceed.
  • Blockages may be the result of a hex or curse. However the emphasis with Unblocking Spells is emphatically a repairing the situation at hand: opening the roads. There’s little emphasis on who may have placed a hex or on returning it.
  • Blockages may result because you’re desperately in need of magickal cleansing: too much accumulated negative debris is weighing you down, preventing mobility
  • Blockages may result from spiritual causes

Unblocking spells remove blocks, obstacles, and hurdles, opening the roads so that you can proceed happily with life. Blockages are the opposite of a crossroads. Crossroads offer possibilities of change, motion, and power. Blockages weigh you down, removing avenues of opportunity and limiting you to travel a path not of your choosing.

There are two aspects to unblocking spells:

  • Specific spirits, magickal owners of gates and crossroads, control access on all roads. They determine who passes and who is blocked. These road opener spirits may be petitioned to remove your particular blockage
  • Other spells take advantage of the power of herbs and magickal items to remove a block
