A festival called the Caprotinia, or the Nonae Caprotinae (“The Nones of the Wild Fig”) took place in ancient Rome on July 7.  Celebrated by serving women, it is thought that this feast day fused an older fig-tree festival with the commemoration of a historical event, when female servants, under the leadership of a caprificus-climbing girl called Philotis played a crucial part in defeating a Latin tribe. During the Caprotinia, the ancillae staged play fights, feasted under fig trees, and offered the fruits to the matriarchal goddess Juno Caprotina.

 

Heavenly Honeysuckle

Go out at dusk to inhale the divine scent of a flowering honeysuckle. Associated with both the Moon and this day’s zodiacal sign of Cancer in astrological belief, honeysuckle has long symbolized the sweet, clinging nature of a young woman’s love.

Herb of the Day for June 11 – Chaparral Leaf

Herb of the Day – Chaparral Leaf
Native to the Southwestern parts of US and Mexico, Chaparral Leaf, or Larrea tridentata has long been used among Native Americans to treat arthritis, respiratory ailments, and even cancer. Interestingly, the plant produces a sap that keeps other plants from growing near itself, and while the branches may wither or fall off, the crown rarely dies and sometimes reproduces itself. Indeed, an example in California is believed by some to be well over 11,000 years old. For these qualities it was often revered within local lore, and the Southwestern Native Americans often used the sap as a sunscreen, and the plant in general as a treatment for assorted ailments, including blood poisoning, and liver disease. They also used to the leave to brew a tea that they would use to rid the body of parasites.

Modern herbalists see it most commonly as an expectorant, of great use in treating respiratory issues like asthma, bronchitis, and the coughing symptoms of the common cold. Chaparral Leaf has also been shown to possess antioxidant qualities, believed to help destroy the particles that destroy cells and possibly cause cancer. Studies have been conducted that show the leaf to aid in restricting cancerous growth. While the leaf possesses a great many positive qualities, it has been shown to occasionally react poorly with the liver, and you should discontinue use if you experience nausea, fever, fatigue, or Jaundice while using the herb.

Daily Feng Shui Tip for June 8 – “Name Your Poison Day!”

Today’s ‘Name Your Poison Day’ has me thinking of holistic remedies that can be embraced if your poison is ivy or sumac or oak. At least one of these poisonous weeds grows in every U.S. state, and as many as 10 million Americans are affected by these plants annually. Contact with them can cause irritating blisters, itching and a discharge. Should that happen, immediately wash the affected area with cold water — you have about two minutes to rinse off the urushiol oil that carries the plant’s ‘poison.’ However, if you’re lacking water and you develop a rash, you can bring quick relief by dabbing the area with a mix of equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. You can also rub slices of fresh lemon on the affected area to stop the itch and heal the rash. Of course, gel from a fresh aloe plant offers the same healing relief. Be aware that these remedies are not applicable if the skin has been broken. In that event, proper medical intervention may be necessary. This way the next time someone asks you ‘what’s your poison,’ it won’t be ivy, sumac or oak!

Mojo Rising Medicine Bundle

Focusing our intention can help us to get what we need. This ancient shamanic technique uses the spirit power of plants aligned with your own desire to make a simple bundle that you carry with you. It’s like a spiritual radio, transmitting its energy and your requests to the universe and receiving the blessings that the spirits send back. Here is how to make a mojo bag to attract what you need.

Before you create a mojo bag, be clear on your intention, what you want the charm to do. Holding this intention in mind, take a walk in nature and allow yourself to be drawn to the plants that reflect your purpose. Spend a little time with them and speak to them of your needs. Request that they offer a little of themselves to help you.

The creator has given us clues to the healing and spiritual power of plants by ensuring that their outward appearances reflect their uses and intentions. Thus, the seed pods of the honesty plant, dried and relieved of their outer skins, are shining, translucent, and silver, round like coins and round like haloes. They can therefore be used to attract spiritual blessings and truth (honesty) or to draw in wealth, according to your intent.

When you take your plant materials home, dry them and then gently crush them. Mix them with a little rum, Florida Water, or essential oil and allow them to dry again.

Choose a piece of fabric in a color that corresponds to the qualities you wish to draw into your life. Colors are have traditional associations with certain energies: red with power and energy, pink with love, green for abundance, blue for peace, white for purity, and so on.

Place your plant material in the center of the fabric. You may add other objects to help: for more money, for example, add a few small coins on the homeopathic principle of like attracting like; a magnet to pull in success; a rose quartz for love, and so on. You can also write out your intention on a piece of paper and include it if you wish.

Sew up the bag or tie the bundle with a ribbon to keep the materials in place. Then smudge it with sage smoke and sprinkle it with a little Florida Water or essential oil. Carry your mojo bag with you.

Daily Feng Shui Tip for Thursday, May 24th

I have two brothers. My older brother, Bob, is one of the best friends a girl (or guy) could ever have. He has my back on every conceivable front and I love him for that. I am also fortunate enough to say that my younger brother, Dave, is also one of my best friends. Both of these men play very important roles in my life. I am exceedingly grateful that my brothers and I have so much in common, get along so wonderfully well and love each other as much as we do. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t have normal family squabbles and even some knock down fights. On those rare occasions when we’re not seeing eye to eye, I step back and trigger the energies of my home’s Family/Friends/Ancestors area in order to set the agenda right. One way I do this is to place a photo of the three of us together in a wooden frame. Wood is the element associated with the Family area in Feng Shui. It speaks to and symbolizes roots and the family tree. I will then, in efforts to bring back the brotherly love, place three small and healthy green plants in the vicinity surrounding that family photo while waiting for all animosity to disappear! This fabulous Feng Shui cure never fails to bring friendship back to the family agenda!

Daily Feng Shui Tip for May 15th – International Day for Families

On this ‘International Day for Families’ it doesn’t take celebrities to remind us that we are all one family stemming from one big tree of life. And although there are many branches and leaves stemming from that tree, we are all still brothers and sisters under one sun. In order to activate that communal energy, and to strengthen the bonds and bring balance to the energies accorded our ancestral families, place three green plants in the Family/Friends/Ancestors area of your living space today. This area is usually found at the center of the left-hand wall of main floor. Wood is the element associated with that energetic space, so planting something healthy and green with appropriate roots attached will allow you to ground ancestral energies and learn from your past. Nurturing, nourishing and loving any plants placed here will additionally bring that same sort of Chi into your life and the lives of your loved ones.

Daily Feng Shui Tip for Sunday, May 13

I simply don’t have the words to express my sentiments about today’s ‘Mother’s Day’ celebration. Sometimes just writing or saying the word ‘mother’ speaks volumes. Today I honor, appreciate and applaud every single one of us who have taken on the task of mothering. Some will be spending time with their own mothers today, the same mothers who sacrificed and snuggled, smiled and supported, no matter what. And then there are those of us who are living without our mothers, and our lives are definitely not quite the same. We miss them every day. I know I do. Happy Mother’s Day to every mother who walks this whole wide world. You make all that’s wonderful in the world even better — and most of the time you don’t even know it. Lucky bamboo is a great gift that is believed to bring solid support to every area of Mom’s now lucky life. There are even numbers of stalks you can give to show her support in specific endeavors, or oddly enough, other numbers that can also create great fortunes. Two stalks if she’s looking for a partner, five if her health is of concern and eight if she could use a little cold, hard cash. She warms your heart, holds your hand and cries whenever you do. Like I said, just read the word and feel the love. Mother. Happy day devoted just to you!
