The Celtic Tree Calendar – following the lunar cycle

The Celtic Tree Calendar is based on the ogham alphabet and its association with trees.
It consists of 13 months, each 28 days long, following the lunar cycle, as Roman accounts have suggested the Druids did, with one extra day representing the 23rd December, the ‘Day of Creation’.
Each of the 13 months is represented by a tree together with its ogham letter.
Ogham, the mysterious language of the trees The Origins of the Ogham alphabet are still a mystery for many historians, but it is primarily thought to be an early form of the Irish written Language.
The calendar was conceived by the British poet and scholar Robert Graves. It was an idea put forward in his book The White Goddess, a historical grammar of poetic myth, first published in 1948.
The book focused on the mythology of Ireland, Britain, Europe and the Middle East, interpreting it in Grave’s individual and poetic style.
As historical accounts of ancient Druids are scarce, many of Graves’ ideas regarding the Celtic Tree Calendar were based on the works of Irish historian Ruaidhrí Ó Flaithbheartaigh, (Roderick O’Flaherty). Ó Flaithbheartaigh had published Ogygia in 1685, an elaborate history of Ireland that journeys back to the time of myths and legends and contains within it a chapter on understanding the ancient ogham alphabet.
Graves’ works may also have been influenced by the 14th century Book of Ballymote which contains a chapter on the ogham in which many varieties of the alphabet appear in the form of several diagrams thought to be used as secret codes.
Although the calendar is quite new in a historical sense, its influences lie within ancient Celtic mythology and folklore. It is a beautiful example of how modern spiritual beliefs and the customs of ancient times can be combined to form something enchanting.

Full Moon Ritual For Kids By Beth Griffin
Moon Cycle Rituals and intention setting with your kids!? YES!
The moon is probably one of my favorite life/homeschool topics. I started practicing moon cycle rituals years ago and this has grown to be something the kids look forward to now too. The Full Moon brings lots of energy- it’s great having a practice to help to process and feel less overwhelmed.
EVERYTHING is cyclical, awareness of and connection to the moon cycle will welcome more ease into daily life.
Take some time and pay attention to the cycle of the moon for a few months, note your feelings/mood/behaviors, and do the same for your kids.
You’ll likely see a spike in high energy around the time of the Full Moon, ask any ER doctor, the old saying that “things are always more wild around a Full Moon”, has real, statistical legs.
So what to do with all of that super charged energy?
Full Moon Ritual For Kids:
Some items to gather that touch all 5 senses:

Paper and something to write, draw, or paint with- get as creative as you want! Pouring Full Moon energy into art is a great outlet!

If you set goals/intentions on the New Moon, bring those- we usually each set one together and then use this time to reflect and appreciate the journey.

A guided meditation- the Calm app or Headspace app are both AWESOME for this! We love the meditations for kids on the Calm app and use them all the time. I tried being the one to guide and apparently that makes the kids giggle and want to ask questions and chat- which is fine, but I also like seeing them just BE and breathe. Another option is calming music. If you have a favorite candle or cleansing fragrance like burning some cedar chips or a smoke cleansing bundle- go for it!

Crystals- if you have a crystal collection, this is a great time to enjoy it. Both of my kiddos love rocks, crystals and minerals and have solid collections going at this point, so we like to incorporate our found treasures in this ritual.

Epsom salt & herb bath- this has become something we try to do more often, but life is so busy with middle grade kiddos and all the activities- so it’s nice to incorporate a special bath in our Moon Ritual so each kiddo still has at least a couple baths each month.

FIRE- The Full Moon is time to let go of what no longer serves us, appreciate the lessons we’ve learned and celebrate what brought us joy and fulfillment. I know that may sound a little sketchy with young kids, but it’s actually a great way to teach fire safety and have some fun.

Music- the Full Moon is all about big, bright energy, so it’s a wonderful time to move and shake to your favorite tunes.

Food- sharing a meal with family and friends to celebrate the Full Moon is always fun and a great way to connect and share your favorite foods. Since there is usually one Full Moon per month you can totally theme it to the season or to which full moon it is. This can also help you create a habit of doing at least one community or family meal each month, even in the busiest of times.
How to practice:
Set aside 30 minutes the day of the Full Moon – or if that’s not possible any time with in about 48 hours prior or post- I have kids too, I get it.
GET OUTSIDE:

Weather permitting, Incorporate some time outside, if possible, in the moonlight. This can be a little more of a challenge in Summer months. If the moon comes up past bedtime, work the outdoor time in before that, any time outside is good! You can do the entire ritual outdoors, in the yard, at the beach or on a camping trip.
GET CENTERED:

Start with a grounding mindfulness/meditation practice- depending on what your kids are up for, this could be 3 deep breaths together, a 5-7 minute guided meditation or something more. Kids love chanting, humming, singing a song together- get creative to help them engage while they feel calm and present.
GET CREATIVE:

When you’re finished with mindfulness, take 5-20 minutes for “journaling practice”- this obviously varies a bit with various age/ability levels- my 5 year old likes to draw and write a tiny bit, my 8 year old will write the entire time. Alternatively (or as an additional part of the ritual) you can do some lunar art! I have a few ideas saved on Pinterest if you’d like to check em out!

GET FULL & BRIGHT:

The moon in this phase is FULL & BRIGHT so this is a good time to embrace that big energy and celebrate the things that make us feel full of light. We love incorporating fire in this part of the ritual- and usually do so with our back yard fire pit. You can use a candle or even make a pretend fire with tissue paper. Always be safe and mindful when using fire for part of your practice. The Full Moon is time to let go of what is no longer serving us, appreciate the lessons we’ve learned and celebrate what is going well. We like to write down what we are letting go of and burn it in the fire.
OTHER FUN IDEAS:

If you have a crystal collection it’s fun to set them up on a tray and take them out for a little charge-up at night in the light of the Full Moon.

You can also make “moon water” by filling a glass jar (or any container with a lid really) with water and letting it bathe all night in the moonlight.

Take a bath- this is a great way to wrangle some of that wild Full Moon energy after your ritual. We like adding 1/4 cup Epsom salt and some calming herbs/oils like lavender.

Lunar water is full of magical energy. “Moon Water” is an ancient symbol associated with the lunar cycle. Use this powerful water to empower your intentions, manifest your dreams, and bring your desires to fruition. Plus, it’s a great way to get in touch with your inner child! And all you need is a jar and some water to get started.
Moon water is often one of the first moon rituals people try. The full moon’s energy encompasses completion, renewal, and rebirth. This is why many cultures believe that the full moon brings good luck.
I like to add some ingredients to my full moon water. To make my moon water, fill a glass jar with fresh water. Add 1/8 teaspoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of rose petals. Place the lid on top and shake vigorously, and then place it under the moon.
The salt is for protection, the rose petals for gentle manifestation of love and self love.
After leaving the water out under the moon for a few hours, I bring it in and strain it. This water is usually used up within a week of collecting it. I put it into potions and magical baths. Speaking of baths…

Adding a bit of the moon water you collected to your bubble bath can cleanse and heal your soul as it cleanses your body. Kids love bubble baths, and you can tell them that they’re sitting in a hug magic potion meant to make them happier!

I hurt me left knee about2 1/2 weeks ago and did way to much yesterday so I have been up since around 1:30 AM CDT and couldn’t fall back to sleep because of the pain. I took a prescription pain pill that is kicking and I can barely keep my eyes open so I am taking a nap. Then I will get all the posts up sometime later today. The same goes for me answering emails.

What Is A Retrograde?
A retrograde takes place when a planet gradually slows down its speed in the sky. Each of the astrological planets (aside from the two luminaries, the sun and the moon) have a retrograde cycle. The inner planets (i.e. Mercury, Venus, Mars) station retrograde more frequently than the outer planets (i.e. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto), due to how quickly they whip around the zodiac. When a planet stations retrograde, it can cause delays, slowdowns, and turnarounds pertaining to what that planet signifies. Mercury (aka the messenger) retrograde, for example, tends to be a more challenging time for processing information, communicating effectively, and portraying accurate details. This tends to be a more noticeable retrograde than when an outer planet like Pluto stations retrograde, because of Mercury’s proximity to Earth.
What Planets Will Be Retrograde June 2023?
This month, a total of three planets will be retrograding through the skies: Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto. However, since two of these retrogrades involve outer planets, their effects won’t be as noticeable. It’s that one inner planet that you need to concern yourself with shaking things up a bit more.
What To Expect From June 2023’s Retrograde Planets
- Pluto stationed retrograde on May 1
- Saturn will station retrograde on June 17
- Neptune will station retrograde on June 30
Saturn Retrograde (June 17 – Nov. 4)
On June 17, Saturn — the planet of boundaries, rules, and structures — will station retrograde in the mutable water sign of Pisces. While Saturn retrogrades take place annually for about four months out of the year, this is the ringed planet’s first time stationing retrograde in the sign of the fishes in almost 30 years. As a result, the Pisces-ruled house in your birth chart will experience some major restructuring, especially if you’re currently experiencing your Saturn return.
In Pisces, Saturn won’t implement the same, rigid boundaries it’s been used to over the last several years. Instead, Saturn will work to refine and improve the area of your chart where structure tends to be the most absent. Since Pisces is the idealistic, aspirational sign of the zodiac, Saturn’s time in this sign will be all about actualizing your dreams and making them a reality. However, as the retrograde unfolds, you may notice a slowdown in this area of your life. From June 17 until Nov. 4, you’ll be called to reconsider how you’ve been pursuing your hopes and visions. In order for a wish to come true, hard work and discipline is required, and this retrograde will send you back to the drawing board to make some much-needed adjustments.
Neptune Retrograde (June 30 – Dec. 6)
As the month comes to a close, Neptune — the planet of deception, fantasy, and illusions — will also station retrograde in Pisces. Fortunately, this is nothing new for the Pisces-ruled house in your birth chart, since the blue planet has been stationing retrograde in this sign every year for the past nine years. And, since Neptune is one of the outer planets, its retrograde period is much less noticeable. What you may notice, however, is a bit of clarity in the area where you tend to be the most naive. Since Neptune is the planet that can cause confusion and uncertainty, its retrograde tends to soften these effects. So, if you’ve been struggling to see things clearly in the area of fantasy, dreams, and ideals, the fog may temporarily lift over the next five months.

Why Is It Called the Strawberry Moon?
The full Moon names used by The Old Farmer’s Almanac come from a number of places, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources. Historically, names for the full or new Moons were used to track the seasons. Today, we think of Moon names as “nicknames” for the Moon.
June’s full Moon—typically the last full Moon of spring or the first of summer—has traditionally been called the Strawberry Moon. While strawberries certainly are a reddish-pink color and are roundish in shape, the origin of the name “Strawberry Moon” has nothing to do with the Moon’s hue or appearance, despite the evocative imagery (shown in the artist rendering below). A Moon usually appears reddish when it’s close to the horizon because the light rays must pass through the densest layers of atmosphere.
This “Strawberry Moon” name has been used by Native American Algonquian tribes that live in the northeastern United States as well as the Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota peoples to mark the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that are ready to be gathered. The Haida term Berries Ripen Moon reflects this as well. As flowers bloom and early fruit ripens, June is a time of great abundance for many.
Alternative June Moon Names
Many cultures over time have used different names for the 12 full moons experienced each year. Usually, they’re not based on a color, but on a common activity that takes place that time of year.
Blooming Moon (Anishinaabe) is indicative of the flowering season, while Green Corn Moon (Cherokee) and Hoer Moon (Western Abenaki) suggest that it’s time to tend to young crops.
Other names highlight that this is a time of new life: The Tlingit have used the term Birth Moon, referring to the time when certain animals are born in their region (the Pacific Northwest). Egg Laying Moon and Hatching Moon are Cree terms that also hint at a time of many animal babies.
Alternative European names for this Moon include the Honey Moon and the Mead Moon. June was traditionally the month of marriage, and is even named after the Roman goddess of marriage, Juno. Following marriage comes the “honeymoon,” which may be tied to this alternative Moon name!

The June Full Strawberry Moon
The sweetest full moon of the year is June’s full moon, commonly known as the Full Strawberry Moon. While the full moon itself is inedible, despite how round and delicious it may seem, the Full Strawberry Moon marks strawberry harvesting season in North America. Most Algonquin tribes understood that it was a sign that wild strawberries were starting to ripen and ready for the harvest. Delicious though ripe strawberries may be, June’s full moon has another name that’s even sweeter.
What could possibly be sweeter than strawberries? Try honey. In Europe, June’s full moon was actually known as the Honey Moon. Other European names for it included the Hot Moon, signifiying the beginning of hot summer days, or Hay Moon, because of the first hay harvest. Those names aside, European names for the Full Strawberry Moon overall tend to have sweet, romantic connotations – a good example is the name Full Rose Moon. June’s full moon is also called Mead Moon, which could refer to the mowing of meadows during summer, but there’s another more romantic interpretation as well.
In Europe, it’s traditional to gift mead or honey to a newlywed couple during their first moon of marriage. The name Honey Moon itself has now become a common word in the English language, used to refer to the honeymoon holiday that couples go on right after they’re married. It used to be that newlyweds in ancient Europe would go on a sweet romantic holiday around the time of June’s full moon, because the moon phases were seen as a symbol for the phases of a marriage, with the full moon signifying the fullest and happiest part, the wedding itself.
The Full Strawberry Moon is tied to romance and marital bliss all around the world. In India, for example, June’s full moon is celebrated as Vat Purnima, where married women perform a ceremonial ritual to show their love for their husbands. Vat Purnima is based off a legend from the Mahabharata, about a beautiful woman, Savitri, who is determined to save her husband, Satyavan, who is doomed to die an early death. Savitri fasts for three days before Satyavan dies, upon which she successfully negotiates with the King of Hell for the resurrection of her husband. Similarly, married women nowadays dress up in beautiful saris, fast, and tie a thread around a banyan tree seven times to wish that their husbands will lead long, happy lives.
It is no wonder, then, that the Pagans also call June’s full moon the Lovers’ Moon. This is an excellent time to work on the connections in your life, romantic or otherwise, by showing affection to your loved ones and allowing yourself to be vulnerable to encourage intimacy in your relationships. During this Honey Moon, some Hoodoo practitioners will even use honey in magic rituals to sweeten other people’s feelings towards the practitioner. An example of a sweetening ritual is to pour honey into a saucer containing the target’s name, before lighting a candle on top of it. Another example of a honey ritual is to tie two poppets together with honey between them, in order to heal a broken relationship between two people. Honey rituals aside, true magic may happen when you invest your time and effort during this month to work on your relationships and appreciate the love you have in your life.

The Hawthorn is a prickly sort of plant with beautiful blossoms. Called Huath by the ancient Celts, and pronounced Hoh-uh, the Hawthorn month is a time of fertility, masculine energy, and fire. Coming right on the heels of Beltane, this month is a time when male potency is high — if you’re hoping to conceive a child, get busy this month! The Hawthorn has a raw, phallic sort of energy about it — use it for magic related to masculine power, business decisions, making professional connections. The Hawthorn is also associated with the realm of Faerie, and when the Hawthorn grows in tandem with an Ash and Oak, it is said to attract the Fae.

The Hawthorn is Known in Ireland as the fairy tree. It is often referred to as the gentle bush, lone bush or thorn, as it is disrespectful to mention the fairies by name.
As it is considered a fairy tree, it is believed to be extremely bad luck to cut one down, remove branches, or even hang things upon it (except at Beltane when this was customary) in case you disturb the little folk.
This belief has survived into modern times.
In 1999 work was interrupted on the main road from Limerick to Galway because a fairy tree stood in its path. The road had to be rerouted and construction was delayed for 10 years.
In 2009 there were numerous sightings of an ancient ghost thought to reappear in Tyrone after the felling of a fairy tree.
Few people will speak of the fairy tree out of a mixture of fear and respect and even fewer would ever remove or damage a hawthorn standing alone.
Couples fell in love under the hawthorn blossom
Contrary to these beliefs, in Britain, the hawthorn was associated with love and springtime, as the warm weather of May would bring couples together under the sweet blossoms of the hawthorn.
Hawthorn branches hung above a door were believed to protect from evil spirits rather than incurring their wrath.
In ancient Greece, likewise, the hawthorn was associated with love and marriage. Hawthorn crowns were worn by brides as decorative headwear and a hawthorn branch would be used as a wedding torch, perhaps where the phrase ‘carry a torch for’ comes from, meaning to love or have strong feelings for.

How to watch the Flower Moon lunar eclipse on May 5 in a free livestream
A lunar eclipse will be joining the full Flower Moon of May 2023.
On Friday (May 5) at 11:15 a.m. EDT (1515 GMT), a lunar eclipse will begin as the moon enters the outer edge of Earth’s shadow. This particular type of lunar eclipse is known as penumbral, meaning skywatchers will be able to see the face of the moon darken without completely disappearing. The event will reach its peak at 1:24 p.m. EDT (1724 GMT), some two hours after beginning, and end at 3:32 p.m. EDT (1932 GMT) as the Earth’s shadow leaves the moon once again.

Luckily, the Virtual Telescope Project will host a free livestream of the lunar eclipse of the full Flower Moon beginning at 2:45 p.m. EDT (1845 GMT) on Friday (May 5). The livestream will be available on the project’s website or YouTube channel.

May’s Full Flower Moon
May is most notable for being the turning point in the year where temperatures rise and a vast variety of flowers come into full bloom, letting the world break out into a riot of color. As such, May’s full moon has come to be known as the Full Flower Moon. The Anishnaabe tribe also called it the Blossom Moon. In Northern America, you can expect to see flowers such as bluebells, sundrops, violets, and so on, as well as lush greenery to go with the blossoms. The Apache and Lakota peoples named May’s full moon the Green Leaves Moon, while the Mohawk tribe called it the Big Leaf Moon. But there is one specific plant that’s very important during the May season – and it is, in fact, not a flower.
This plant is corn, an important staple food for Northern American peoples. According to the Algonquin tribes, May’s full moon is the Corn Planting Moon. For Native American tribes, this is the perfect time for them to start preparing the fields for farming and sowing the seeds saved up from last year. Appropriately, the Abenaki culture refers to May’s full moon as the Field Maker Moon, while the Haida tribe calls it the Food Gathering Moon. Apart from corn, other foods such as beans, squash, and potatoes are planted during this time. The Cherokee tribe called May’s full moon the Anisguti Moon, or the Planting Moon, and would traditionally perform a Corn Dance during this period to encourage a fruitful corn harvest.
Due to the rising temperatures, the Full Flower Moon is also a time of heightened fertility. This is a good time for women to bear children in a warm, safe environment that would increase the chance of their survival. That’s why May’s full moon is also named Mother’s Moon, or Milk Moon, which could refer to breastfeeding or to the milking of cows. The latter interpretation is based off the Old English name Rimilcemona, or the Month of Three Milkings, referring to how this was a period where cows could be milked up to three times daily.
In other parts of the world, the Full Flower Moon is better known as Vesak or Buddha Day, the most significant celebration for Buddhists all around the world. On the first full moon of May, Buddhists commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. Devout practitioners are encouraged to renew their intention to adhere to sacred Buddhist principles, as well as refrain from all forms of killing and violence, including eating meat. Celebrations include giving charity to the poor, disabled, and otherwise marginalized groups in society. Depending on your location, you may witness the spectacular practice of releasing thousands of caged birds into the air as a symbolic gesture of liberation, though this tradition is illegal in countries such as Singapore because it may cause harm to local ecosystems.
Pagans, on the other hand, associate the Full Flower Moon with the element of fire, and thus often celebrate it by lighting bonfires and engaging in other magical fire rituals to bring prosperity. Powerful colors for the Full Flower Moon include fiery colors like red, yellow, and orange. This is a good time to tend your garden and let the seeds you’ve planted blossom – both literally and metaphorically. Cultivate your passions and desires, encourage them to burst forth into bloom, and you will be rewarded with abundance in various forms in your life.
