(One Person’s View Point) Let’s Talk Witch – Writing and Working Your Own Spells c. 2015

Writing and Working Your Own Spells

While using spells made by other people can be just as effective, writing your own spells is not that difficult at all. In fact, in some cases, it is more than encouraged. Another person’s work will not resonate with you as much as your own words will. Even when working with a traditional spell, making modifications to the words to suit your specific goal can enhance the results.

Learning how to write original spells is important to you as a modern practitioner especially in times when the exact kind of spell that you are searching for cannot be found in a book.

Work a vague spell and you are likely to get a vague result. With the exception of a few special cases, the first secret to writing an effective spell is to be as specific as possible. This entails knowing exactly what you want. Try not to send mixed signals to the universe because if you do, it is likely to come back to you. This is why, as previously mentioned, meditation is often a prerequisite prior to dealing with spells.

You should take your time to formulating the words. Remember the ambiguous wording can be dangerous. Also, be careful what you ask for because, well, you know the rest…

Symbolism plays a crucial role in magick spell workings. The second thing to consider when writing an original magick spell is whether you need certain tools to accompany it. The commonly used tools for spells include crystals, candles, robes, incense and herbs. While these items may not possess magick by themselves, they help in building the atmosphere. Remember to cleanse and consecrate these objects before using them.

The third ingredient to working a spell is the timing. You must determine whether the moon phase is a vital factor to your spell. Performing a spell under the right moon phase is likely to increase its effectiveness. Keep in mind that spells used to attract things and spells for abundance are best performed under a waxing moon.

A full moon provides the highest energy, followed by the new moon. Spells used to send things away are performed under a waning moon. If a spell needs to be performed during a specific time of the day or for several successive nights or days, follow it conscientiously.

A magick spell is more effective when you keep them in tune with the seasons. For example, you can do spells used to start things during the planting season and do spells used for obtaining things during harvest season.

Write down your magick spell on paper. The written word, in itself, is magick. While you write, you are transferring your energy into your words. Writing by hand also enables you to enter a different state of consciousness.

If a spell has not worked within an entire lunar month, chances are you need to rework the wording or the procedure.

Finally, the most important rule: Believe in your spell. Working a spell, no matter how wonderfully worded, without believing in it will result to failure. You should never attempt to cast a spell without sufficient faith in magick because doing so is to render yourself vulnerable to negative forces.

All Signs

Prepare for a tough week. (There’s no way to sugarcoat this.) On Monday, we have a Full Moon in Scorpio; and on the same day, Mercury, the planet of communications, is at odds with Pluto, triggering power struggles. Meanwhile, throughout the week, there’s lots of potential for deceit and duplicity, in addition to the tension that might arise when dealing with others. Oy! Monday (Full Moon Day) will be accident-prone — as will Friday/Saturday. The good news is that every month our problems intensify as the Full Moon approaches; and then after the Full Moon peaks, these same problems diminish or even disappear. Go slowly this week. Don’t believe everything you hear. Watch your back. Guard against knee-jerk reactions. Don’t squat with your spurs on.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This week your focus is on earnings, cash flow, assets and your wealth. Stay on top of details because Monday’s Full Moon could impact your financial status. Make friends with your bank account. Know what’s happening. Likewise, be conscious of your possessions if they need to be repaired, returned, cleaned – whatever. In other words, take care of what you own. Power struggles with someone about money might occur. Cool your jets. Wait a week until things calm down. For the next two weeks, Mercury is in your Money House increasing your concern with business and commercial affairs. You might be shopping more than usual. Protect what you own at the end of this week to prevent loss, theft or damage.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This might be a challenging week because on Monday, the only Full Moon opposite your sign all year is taking place. This could create power struggles with parents, authority figures (including the police) as well as partners, spouses and close friends. (Dontcha love it?) Meanwhile, Mercury will be in your sign for the next two weeks, prompting you to speak up and put in your two cents. (In fact, you’ll put a lot of yourself into what you say.) Your mind will be fast moving, jumping from topic to topic, urging you to travel and explore. “Let’s go!” Nevertheless, I advise you to pay attention to everything you say and do, because the Sun in your sign is lined up with unpredictable Uranus, which could be accident-prone! (You get the picture.)

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

With the challenging astrological influences that occur this week, some signs get hit harder than others. But I think you’re not one of them. In fact, I think what you will feel will be more like an internal restlessness. You might see some upheaval occurring around you – little mishaps (and major mishaps) – and this might be disconcerting. But on the whole, relations with friends, groups and organizations will be warm and rewarding. Admittedly, Monday’s Full Moon could trigger problems at work, or with your health, or a pet. Nevertheless, you’ll be positive and dynamic in your communications with others. Your ability to research in the next few weeks is excellent.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Monday’s Full Moon might create difficulties with your kids, friends and groups. Hmmm. This energy could also create problems with romantic partners. More hmmm. This is why power struggles about shared property, debt, taxes, and shared responsibilities might occur. Meanwhile, a friend might surprise you. Or you might meet a real character? In the next few weeks, expect to hang out with younger people more than usual. Meanwhile, whatever happens, Venus is crossing the top of your chart, and this make you look attractive to everyone. Bosses and people in authority will admire you! Some will strike up a romance with a boss.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

For the next two weeks, Mercury is at the top of your chart making you think about your professional life and your long-term goals. Are you headed in the right direction? This is a strong time to talk to bosses or employers because they will listen. This is also a good time to get extra training, or learn a new technique, or master a particular skill. Fortunately, Mars in your sign gives you energy, which you need because you have a lot on your plate. Avoid arguments with others on Monday. (You don’t need this.) Something unexpected might impact your reputation or your relationship with a boss. Tread carefully.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Pay attention to everything you say and do right now, as you read this column because on Monday, the Full Moon will be an accident-prone situation for you. (This could be a physical accident or a verbal accident. It could be insignificant – or not.) Therefore, slow down and think before you do anything. Meanwhile, in the next two weeks, your desire to travel will be stronger. You might explore chances to take courses, learn a new language or study something that appeals to your fine mind and love of trivia. At the beginning of the week, steer clear of controversial discussions about politics, religion or racial issues because they could get nasty. Double check travel plans, which might suddenly change or be cancelled. Good luck!

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You’re private about your finances; and you don’t like to have money hassles. Nevertheless, the Full Moon on Monday might create problems with earnings, cash flow, purchases or taxes, debt or shared property. Something might come to a head. You might feel that you’re being forced to act. Or something from another source or another person might surprise you, which means you have to deal with an unexpected situation. (“Whaaat?”) In the next two weeks, you’ll have more discussions about finances, property and anything you hold jointly with someone else. Yes, this could include talking to banks, which is such fun. Especially on the phone. (Agghh.) May the Force be with you.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Heads up! On Monday, the Full Moon is in your sign, heightening your emotional responses. You might find yourself at odds with partners, spouses and close friends. Fortunately, the Full Moon tension is generally over in 48 hours. But it could bring things out in the open, which forces you and others to deal with something. (This could be good – or not.) In the next two weeks, Mercury is opposite your sign helping you clarify and explain issues to someone. It’s a good time to sign contracts and enter into negotiations because your objectivity is strong. Mars is still high in your chart arousing your ambition, which helps you work hard. You want to be your own boss. (And why not?)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Like Gemini, you might slide through the tension of tomorrow’s Full Moon because it isn’t coming at you in an “in-your-face” way. To some degree, you can sidestep things. Nevertheless, tension with coworkers or people connected to your health might arise. Keep your eyes open because something unexpected or surprising that’s related to your health, your job or a pet might catch you off guard. Your desire to travel (which never leaves you because you’re the traveller of the zodiac) is strong as Mars travels through the part of your chart ruling foreign countries and intellectual exploration. Meanwhile, fair Venus is in one of the most romantic, fun-loving parts of your chart attracting flirtations, social outings and an increased involvement with the arts. Lucky you!

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Parents please note: This is an accident-prone week for your kids. Be aware of where they are at all times. (Especially toddlers. Be aware of hazardous situations.) Sports is another source of accidents, along with the entertainment world and the hospitality industry. If you work in or are involved in these areas – be mindful. Slow down. Keep your wits about you. Romance will hold surprises for some. (Something might begin – something might end.) This is a wonderful time to schmooze, so get out and enjoy the company of others! Enjoy entertaining at home, as well as making where you live look more attractive. Do something!

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

The Full Moon tomorrow is challenging because you might feel caught between the demands of home and family versus the demands of your career or your reputation. In this particular case, you can’t ignore home and family. In fact, something related to your domestic world, perhaps a parent, might surprise you or bring about a sudden change? In the next two weeks, family discussions will predominate; perhaps because home repairs are on the agenda. Fortunately, with fair Venus in your House of Communications, you’ll be charming with everyone. Another bonus that comes your way is your ability to appreciate your daily surroundings. Definitely a blessing!

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Please be careful because the Full Moon on Monday creates an accident-prone situation for you both verbally and physically. Therefore, slow down. Be aware. Think before you speak or act. On the upside, you might come up with some novel or original ideas that are inventive, even brilliant. (Oh yes, Pisces people are capable of brilliance. Albert Einstein for example, was a fellow Pisces.) It’s partly because you have the added dimension of imagination to your intellect, which allows you to explore “the beyond.” Continue to work hard this week. Expect rewards in the form of money, plus increased gifts and goodies that will come your way. It’s a busy week. Not the time to settle down and relax. The tempo of events will be fast and you’ll be active!

During this Waxing Gibbous phase the moon will rise in the east in the mid- to late-afternoon and will be high in the eastern sky at sunset.

Assuming it’s a clear night, the Waxing Gibbous moon will then be visible through most of the night before setting just before sunrise.

Fun fact: the word Gibbous was first used in the 14th century and comes from the latin word gibbosus which means humpbacked.
