The Further Tail of Comet Leonard

Image Credit & Copyright: Daniele Gasparri

Explanation: Comet Leonard, brightest comet of 2021, is at the lower left of these two panels captured on December 29 in dark Atacama desert skies. Heading for its perihelion on January 3 Comet Leonard’s visible tail has grown. Stacked exposures with a wide angle lens (also displayed in a reversed B/W scheme for contrast), trace the complicated ion tail for an amazing 60 degrees, with bright Jupiter shining near the horizon at lower right. Material vaporizing from Comet Leonard’s nucleus, a mass of dust, rock, and ices about 1 kilometer across, has produced the long tail of ionized gas fluorescing in the sunlight. Likely flares on the comet’s nucleus and buffeting by magnetic fields and the solar wind in recent weeks have resulted in the tail’s irregular pinched and twisted appearance. Still days from its closest approach to the Sun, Comet Leonard’s activity should continue. The comet is south of the Solar System’s ecliptic plane as it sweeps through the southern constellation Microscopium.

A Thought for Today

What Does My Spirituality Mean to Me?

Walking a Pagan spiritual path and doing some soul searching, I find it has helped me like myself and become a better person to all I meet. Part of my almost daily prayer is “Please help me be kind, consider, and thoughtful to anyone I come in contact with no matter how they may treat me, talk to or about me. Let my smile bring a little joy into their life today.” One morning I was praying while walking my dogs and a woman I had many run-ins with over the last couple of years start yelling something at me from inside her truck. I was just getting ready to yell back something equally offence when the Goddess or God or a Spirit Guide put those words in my head. So instead of what I was going to say I replied with, “Thanks for taking the time to talk to me. Hope you have a good one.” Needless to say she just sat there with her mouth hanging open, I waved and we continued our walk. The next time this woman’s and my paths crossed all she said was, “Good Morning.”  This all happened almost 5 and a half years ago and to this day she is not a friend but at least nice when we happen to meet. We use to at opposite ends of the block until I moved so it happens about once a week while still living at my old address. I know it was meant as a growing thing for me to tolerate nasty people more but I wonder if she grew a little too?

My fiancée’ is a non-practicing Christian and is ok with me doing spellwork, rituals, blessing our home, etc. the time. When at all possible I do my full blown rituals (Big altar set up, pre-ritual bath, etc.) are done when he is gone or I do them out in our side yard. Sometimes though out of the clear blue he will ask me to do something for him, for example, getting his ex-wife to quit spreading very negative rumors about him. Which I more than willing did a spell to bind her from talking or writing or texting or typing anything about him.

I have five children, three boys and two girls. My oldest son is Buddhist, my middle son a sort of Christian (believes in the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit but does not attend any church), my youngest son claims to be an Atheist but I have some doubts about that. My older daughter follows Lakota Native American traditions as well as some Christian and Pagan ones, my younger daughter is very Christian to the point that we have agreed not to talk to each other about our spiritual beliefs (Although I was raised in the same Christian church she attends with her family.) All my children are grown and live in their own homes which makes it easier to keep a small altar set up in mine all the time.

I also have three granddaughters and six grandsons, some are old enough to decide on their own what spiritual path they want to follow while other are not old enough in their parents eyes. Most of my grandchildren have inherited some type of special gift that can be nurtured properly with incorporating certain teachings into their spiritual lives. I am allowed to help five of the nine grandchildren with this openly. There is one I have to take small baby steps with because her mother is my youngest daughter but she wants to learn witchcraft. While this is not an ideal situation my daughter has begun to see the benefits of me helping her and is allowing me to do more with her. I do not want to force my spiritual path on any of my children or grandchildren but I expect them to respect my path as I respect theirs.

You may be asking yourself, “What does all of this have to do with the question I have in the title?” The answer is this what my spirituality means I have learned to have greater tolerance for people with  beliefs different than my own. I have learned that it is ok to walk with the Goddesses and Gods and be comfortable doing so and being out of the “broom closet” all most all of the time. I have learned not to be afraid to answer the question, “What faith are you?” when in the hospital or other times and to answer without shame, “I am Pagan.” My spirituality is not something that I cling to in times of need or make a show of on Sabbats, my spirituality is something I walk with in every part of my life and do so proudly.

I hope and wish for those who are new or even older to The Craft can feel the same way. I hope that someday all Pagans can be out of the broom closet and accepted in mainstream society and our spirituality is accept too. This is not going to happen overnight or by us hiding who and what we are. Be proud of the path you choose to bring you closer to yourself and any deities you may wish to interact with.

Giant Storms and High Clouds on Jupiter

Image Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS; Processing & LicenseKevin M. Gill

Explanation: What and where are these large ovals? They are rotating storm clouds on Jupiter imaged last month by NASA’s Juno spacecraft. In general, higher clouds are lighter in color, and the lightest clouds visible are the relatively small clouds that dot the lower oval. At 50 kilometers across, however, even these light clouds are not small. They are so high up that they cast shadows on the swirling oval below. The featured image has been processed to enhance color and contrast. Large ovals are usually regions of high pressure that span over 1000 kilometers and can last for years. The largest oval on Jupiter is the Great Red Spot (not pictured), which has lasted for at least hundreds of years. Studying cloud dynamics on Jupiter with Juno images enables a better understanding of dangerous typhoons and hurricanes on Earth.

Sun Halo over Sweden

Video Credit & Copyright: Håkan Hammar (Vemdalen Ski ResortSkiStar)

Explanation: What’s happened to the Sun? Sometimes it looks like the Sun is being viewed through a giant lens. In the featured video, however, there are actually millions of tiny lenses: ice crystals. Water may freeze in the atmosphere into small, flat, six-sided, ice crystals. As these crystals flutter to the ground, much time is spent with their faces flat and parallel to the ground. An observer may find themselves in the same plane as many of the falling ice crystals near sunrise or sunset. During this alignment, each crystal can act like a miniature lens, refracting sunlight into our view and creating phenomena like parhelia, the technical term for sundogs. The featured video was taken in late 2017 on the side of a ski hill at the Vemdalen Ski Resort in central Sweden. Visible in the center is the most direct image of the Sun, while two bright sundogs glow prominently from both the left and the right. Also visible is the bright 22 degree halo — as well as the rarer and much fainter 46 degree halo — also created by sunlight refracting through atmospheric ice crystals.

Today and tonight the Moon will be in a Third Quarter phase. Sometimes called a Last Quarter Moon, this phase occurs roughly 3 weeks after the New Moon when the Moon is three quarter of the way through it’s orbit around the earth. If you live in the northern hemisphere the Moons left side will be illuminated and the right side will be dark. For those of you in the southern hemisphere it will be the opposite with the right side illuminated. On the day of the Third Quarter phase the Moon will rise around midnight on the eastern horizon and set in the west around noon the next day. In the days following the Third Quarter Phase the Moon’s illumination will decrees each day until the New Moon.

Days Of The Week In Wicca

From a Wiccan viewpoint, it is marvellous how the traditional names of days have survived all through the dark times. It is no secret that all seven days of the week have been named after Gods and Goddesses worshipped by the Old Tradition. Let’s explore the way we could bring a little magic in our everyday use.

According to modern Wicca traditions, all seven days of the week has different attributes and represent a certain element. It is down to you individually, how you use this information but it is believed that an understanding of the wheel of the week can bring a nice change to a hectic lifestyle.

The seven-day week was first introduced by ancient Egyptians, when according to Egyptian astrology they assigned a name to every day by the planet that was regent during the first hour of that particular day. As ancient Egyptian astrology knew only seven celestial bodies, we now have seven days of the week. But all this has also a deeper meaning not only within Wicca.

Comet Leonard behind JWST Launch Plume

Image Credit & Copyright: Matipon Tangmatitham (NARIT)

Explanation: Which one of these two streaks is a comet? Although they both have comet-like features, the lower streak is the only real comet. This lower streak shows the coma and tail of Comet Leonard, a city-sized block of rocky ice that is passing through the inner Solar System as it continues its looping orbit around the Sun. Comet Leonard has recently passed its closest to both the Earth and Venus and will round the Sun next week. The comet, still visible to the unaided eye, has developed a long and changing tail in recent weeks. In contrast, the upper streak is the launch plume of the Ariane V rocket that lifted the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) off the Earth two days ago. The featured single-exposure image was taken from Thailand, and the foreground spire is atop a pagoda in Doi Inthanon National ParkJWST, NASA’s largest and most powerful space telescope so far, will orbit the Sun near the Earth-Sun L2 point and is scheduled to start science observations in the summer of 2022.

A Thought for Today

Namaste and Blessed be dear Sisters, Brothers, and Honored Guests.

Namaste can be used to say ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye’. This is because it does not mean either ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye’ but ‘I bow to the divine in you’. So, it is a respectful and positive thing to say both in greeting and in parting.

Celtic Calendar – Birch December 24 – January 20

(I am sorry I did not get this up on December 24 the day it started)

Birch – the tree of birth

The Birch was seen by the Druids as the tree of birth – a symbol of new beginnings. Beth, meaning birch, is the first letter in the Ogham alphabet and the first month in the Celtic Tree Calendar.

From ireland-calling.com – Birch

The birch tree has many uses both medicinal and practical.

Birch wood is durable but quick to rot, making it a good home for insects and birdlife.

It was often used to make May poles and start the fires at Beltane, the festival of new beginnings, due to a highly combustible tar in its bark.

This tar is furthermore believed to be good for the skin and can be used to treat eczema.

Birch is also associated with purification and protection. The leaves of the birch can be brewed into a tea that treats infection, stimulates the gall bladder and kidneys and is said to dissolve gravel and kidney stones.

Birch used to stimulate purification process

In Scandinavia birch is used in saunas to stimulate the purification process and in Russia birch branches are beaten against the skin at steam rooms for the same purpose. This practice was also used as a punishment in old England to purify a criminal of evil.

James Webb Space Telescope over Earth

Explanation: There’s a big new telescope in space. This one, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), not only has a mirror over five times larger than Hubble‘s in area, but can see better in infrared light. The featured picture shows JWST high above the Earth just after being released by the upper stage of an Ariane V rocket, launched yesterday from French Guiana. Over the next month, JWST will move out near the Sun-Earth L2 point where it will co-orbit the Sun with the Earth. During this time and for the next five months, JWST will unravel its segmented mirror and an array of sophisticated scientific instruments — and test them. If all goes well, JWST will start examining galaxies across the universe and planets orbiting stars across our Milky Way Galaxy in the summer of 2022.

Moon Alert

There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The Moon is in Virgo.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

You might want attention from a parent or someone in authority. You want the reassurance that you have this person’s approval. (We’ve all been there.) Believe me, this can be frustrating when you feel you’re not getting it! Relax.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Today you might be fascinated by someone who is far way, or different from you, or perhaps from another culture. Quite likely, you are entrenched in your views about politics, religion or a particular issue. Is this the day to get on your soap box? Maybe not.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

It’s easy to get obsessed today about the wealth of others or what someone else owns or the wealth of your partner. You might feel jealous, or you might be obsessed about how something is shared – or not shared. In 10 years, will any of this matter? Chill out.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Relations with partners, spouses and close friends are intense today. You want their attention and you want their admiration. Dare I say, you want to feel adored? This can lead to feelings of insecurity and obsession. Take a step back. Give this situation more breathing space. Relax.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

When it comes to issues about health, your pet, or how you are performing in your job, you might be anxious today. You want the approval of someone. (Well, don’t we all?) Focus on lighthearted activities and social outings to have a happy day.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

With the Moon in your sign today, things will tend to go your way. This is reassuring. Many of you want to enjoy social outings and fun times with kids. Therefore, do your best when dealing with increased chaos and turmoil at home. It is what it is.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Issues at home today are intense because feelings are running high. This especially applies to romantic partners. Keep in mind that with Mars in your House of Communications, you’re a bit aggressive! Be gentle with others to keep the peace and promote harmony with everyone.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Today you feel strong, intense feelings when talking to siblings, relatives and neighbours. Be smart and resist the temptation to become obsessed with an idea or a certain point of view. Instead, lighten up! Everyone sees things from their own perspective. Enjoy this day.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You have lots of energy now because Mars is in your sign until January 25. The good news is you have energy to get things done! The not so good news is you might overpower others, especially if they feel uncertain about something. Take it easy.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You have ideas about what you expect today to be, and how you want things to unfold. This is because Venus is lined up with Pluto in your sign, which makes you a bit obsessed about things. It also makes you feel intense. Be aware of this so that you can cut others some slack.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You might be mildly troubled by something that’s going on behind the scenes. You might know what it is, or maybe it’s something you can’t quite put your finger on? Use positive energy today to interact with friends and groups. Whatever happens, keep the high road.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

You’re keen to communicate to friends and groups today. You have strong ideas, especially about your future plans and goals. Remember to listen to what others have to say. Be cooperative because the Moon is still opposite your sign.

If Your Birthday Is Today

You remain calm when others around you are flustered. This is been a social year for you, and also a time when you had to help others. Next year you will have more solitude to learn and to teach.
