The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waning Crescent phase. This phase is best viewed just before the sunrise in the western sky. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this part of the Moon cycle, the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.

Kiribati
The nation of Kiribati is the only country on earth that is situated on all four main hemispheres. The country is comprised of 32 atolls, 21 of which are inhabited. The islands are found in the South Pacific regions of Polynesia and Micronesia. The nation consists of four island groups namely Line Islands, Gilbert Islands, Banaba Island, and Phoenix Islands. The Phoenix Islands which are comprised of 8 atolls, as well as Banaba, are found to the south of the Equator which means that they are in the Southern Hemisphere. The Gilbert Islands which consists of 16 atolls are found on both the Southern and Northern hemispheres. In 1995, the International Date Line was realigned so that it does not to divide the country to accommodate all of the islands in the same working day.

Lunar Eclipses and Solar Eclipses

What is an eclipse?
An eclipse happens when a planet or a moon gets in the way of the Sun’s light. Here on Earth, we can experience two kinds of eclipses: solar eclipses and lunar eclipses.
What’s the difference between a lunar eclipse and a solar eclipse?
Solar Eclipse
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon gets in the way of the Sun’s light and casts its shadow on Earth. That means during the day, the Moon moves over the Sun and it gets dark. Isn’t it strange that it gets dark in the middle of the day?
This total eclipse happens about every year and a half somewhere on Earth. A partial eclipse, when the Moon doesn’t completely cover the Sun, happens at least twice a year somewhere on Earth.
But not everyone experiences every solar eclipse. Getting a chance to see a total solar eclipse is rare. The Moon’s shadow on Earth isn’t very big, so only a small portion of places on Earth will see it. You have to be on the sunny side of the planet when it happens. You also have to be in the path of the Moon’s shadow.
On average, the same spot on Earth only gets to see a solar eclipse for a few minutes about every 375 years!
Lunar Eclipse
During a lunar eclipse, Earth gets in the way of the Sun’s light hitting the Moon. That means that during the night, a full moon fades away as Earth’s shadow covers it up.
The Moon can also look reddish because Earth’s atmosphere absorbs the other colors while it bends some sunlight toward the Moon. Sunlight bending through the atmosphere and absorbing other colors is also why sunsets are orange and red.
During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon is shining from all the sunrises and sunsets occurring on Earth!
Why don’t we have a lunar eclipse every month?
You might be wondering why we don’t have a lunar eclipse every month as the Moon orbits Earth. It’s true that the Moon goes around Earth every month, but it doesn’t always get in Earth’s shadow. The Moon’s path around Earth is tilted compared to Earth’s orbit around the Sun. The Moon can be behind Earth but still get hit by light from the Sun.
Because they don’t happen every month, a lunar eclipse is a special event. Unlike solar eclipses, lots of people get to see each lunar eclipse. If you live on the nighttime half of Earth when the eclipse happens, you’ll be able to see it.
Remembering the Difference
It’s easy to get these two types of eclipses mixed up. An easy way to remember the difference is in the name. The name tells you what gets darker when the eclipse happens. In a solar eclipse, the Sun gets darker. In a lunar eclipse, the Moon gets darker.

“Ring of Fire” Eclipse Solar Event Set to Dazzle Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin: Watch Safely
CHICAGO, IL — Residents across the contiguous 48 states are gearing up for a celestial spectacle on Saturday, October 14th, 2023: an annular solar eclipse.
While residents of the Midwest won’t see the full “ring of fire” but can expect a notable partial eclipse, obscuring nearly 50% of the sun in areas of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.
The event kicks off at 10:33 AM, reaching its peak at 11:56 AM when 48.5% of the sun is veiled. By 1:24 PM, the display concludes.
Safety is paramount.
Unlike total eclipses, annular events don’t entirely cloak the sun, making viewing without proper protection risky. Regular sunglasses won’t cut it. Instead, opt for solar glasses/viewers meeting the 12312-2 international standard. Alternatively, wield welding filters, but ensure they’re shade 12 or higher.
For those lacking the recommended eyewear, get crafty! Pinhole projectors or cardboard box setups can provide indirect, safe viewing methods.
For context, annular eclipses occur when the moon’s distance prevents it from fully obscuring the sun, leaving a fiery ring. Total eclipses, on the other hand, present a fully obscured sun when conditions align perfectly.
Keep those solar glasses handy! In April 2024, a total eclipse will streak across the nation. Central Illinoisans will witness over 90% coverage, reminiscent of the 2017 eclipse, while southern parts will bathe in totality.

A Thought for Today
Feeling a lot less pain and stiffness this morning. Now if the fibromyalgia flare would calm down I would be in really good shape again. But life goes on no matter how we are feeling physically, mentally, spiritually, or any combination of these. So, on to doing today’s regular posts and hopefully a few of tomorrows as well. My brain fog is so bad right now I am forgetting what I am doing as I do sometimes.

This week Mars moves into Scorpio for the next six weeks, making everyone more intense and bolder. (Last time this happened was Nov./Dec. 2021.) Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Solar eclipse in Libra will be our best chance all year to make resolutions about how to improve our closest relationships. How can we get better at negotiating? How can we make peace with someone? The aim is to create more harmony in our lives. Speaking of creating more harmony in our world, Marie Kondo a Libra, says, “The trick is to choose what to keep, not what to throw out.” That’s her secret. I’ve also heard: “Clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions.” (I don’t have time to think about that. Off to do my walking lunges.)
Aries (March 21-April 19)
The trick to navigating this week is to make it to Wednesday. This is because Monday and Tuesday are downright grumpy and prone to arguments with coworkers and customers. Things might also be dicey dealing with pets or pet-related situations. Even something related to your health might provoke an argument. Perhaps someone will nag you about unhealthy habits? (Grrr.) Or perhaps you will feel frustrated with healthcare people who are trying to help you. By Wednesday, all is good. Relief! Your sex drive is strong. Relations with partners and close friends are great. It will be a particularly good time to negotiate issues about inheritances, taxes, debt and shared property – including insurance matters. You’re on it!
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
The first few days of this week are challenging, especially dealing with kids. With younger kids, be skilful at handling hissy fits and meltdowns. With older kids, be patient, tolerant and reasonable. Resist the temptation to take control and win a power struggle. “It’s my way or the highway.” If your kids are in their 20s, now is the time for them to move out while they know everything. Likewise, romance will be in the toilet for the first two days — arguments and hurt feelings. By Wednesday, the clouds blow away and everything is hunky-dory! Go figure. You will be productive at work, in fact, get ready to roll up your sleeves and be hands-on. Fun-filled invitations to sports events and social outings will delight. Gemini (May 21-June 20)
The first two days of this week are downright grumpy, especially with family members, parents, bosses and authority figures. Issues will irk you. (It’s hard to keep your shirt on when you want to get something off your chest.) Be encouraged by the knowledge that when you make it to Wednesday, the rest of the week is smooth sailing. Enjoy entertaining at home this week. It’s a particularly fun-filled week with opportunities to socialize, enjoy Happy Hour, sports events and fun outings. Romance will flourish. Nevertheless, you’ll be productive and get a lot done because you have the energy and drive to work hard. Therefore, be patient on Monday and Tuesday. Hey, that’s just 48 hours.
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Be careful for the first two days of this week because this is when there is a mildly accident-prone time for you. Accidents don’t have to happen during this window but you might be distracted because you’re irritated with someone; and once you’re angry or grumpy, you automatically create a bubble that is just waiting for an accident to happen. The simple solution is to keep your cool and be patient because by Wednesday, you’re laughing! Then you enter into a new realm where life will flow more easily, everything will be more easy-going and people will be happy to see your face. Home entertainment, family discussions plus home improvements will be positive choices later in the week. Competitive sports will appeal.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)
Tiptoe through the tulips until Wednesday this week because financial arguments or disappointments about purchases, possessions or money arrangements might be one reason why you find yourself at odds with someone else. It’s a grumpy time! But lo! What news from yonder modem breaks? Ah ha! Confirmation that from Wednesday onwards, the rest of the week is grand. Short trips, appointments, errands and discussions with others will be upbeat. You’ll put out extra energy at home to create order out of chaos. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
Hold your breath for the first two days this week because this will be a challenging window of time for you to relate to others, especially those who are closest to you. (However, authority figures might be prickly, too.) The secret is to make it until Wednesday because from then on, it’s a pleasant, productive week. You’ll have excellent moneymaking ideas; and you’ll be convincing if you need others to jump on board. You will also be able to influence others. You can teach them or encourage them to be the best they can be. Continue to look for travel opportunities, as well as ways to get further education because this is a fabulous year for you to expand your world. You’re going places!
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Difficulties with work colleagues and authority figures might occur at the beginning of the week. Likewise, hidden love affairs and issues related to your health might also create some angst. A Thought for Today
Giant Burr Acorn
Giant Burr Oak Tree (not the one in my yard).
This is a Giant Burr Acorn of which I have literally hundreds of in out front and part of our side yard from the beautiful, majestic Giant Burr Oak Tree in our front yard. So, the acorns were hurting Merlin feet, Star refused to walk anywhere they had fallen, and Cleo could have cared less and walked around or on them. Since two of our companions were having a problem with the acorns, I took it upon myself to first rake them into piles, then load them into my wheelbarrow and take them to different areas for the Squirrels and Deer would have access to them now and in the winter. A very silly move on my part with a raging fibromyalgia flare! I wound up straining muscles in my back, shoulders, hip, and knees. Friday I could barely move, but it is getting better daily using a topical muscle relaxer, my heating pad and I have become best friends…lol. Hopefully I can finally soak in an Epsom bath with essential oils and herbs to help the muscle soreness to disappear pretty much completely. This is why I have been only doing the regular posts on the date they fall on instead of doing tomorrow posts also.
The ones that have fallen in our back yard from the Giant Burr Oak Tree are staying wherever they fell. I won’t do a final mowing within about 10 feet of the the tree so the deer can forge for them in the cold weather with the added bonus of some of the ones front the yard being spread out in that area also.

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Last Quarter phase. This phase occurs roughly 3 weeks after the New Moon when the Moon is three quarter of the way through it’s orbit around the earth. If you live in the northern hemisphere the Moons left side will be illuminated and the right side will be dark. For those of you in the southern hemisphere it will be the opposite with the right side illuminated. Also called a Third Quarter phase, it will rise around midnight on the eastern horizon and set in the west around noon the next day. In the days following the Third Quarter Phase the Moon’s illumination will decrees each day until the New Moon.
