The Law of the Garbage Truck

 

How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood?

Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day? Unless you’re the Terminator, for an instant, you’re probably set back on your heels. However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly she/he can get back her/his focus on what’s important.

Five years ago I learned this lesson. I learned it in the back of a taxicab in Indianapolis. Here’s what happened:

I hopped in a taxi and we took off for Indianapolis Airport. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car’s back end by just inches!

The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and he started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And, I mean, he was friendly.

So, I said, ‘Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!’ And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, ‘The Law of the Garbage Truck.’

“Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don’t take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You’ll be happy you did.”

So this was it: The ‘Law of the Garbage Truck.’ I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people: at work, at home, on the streets?

It was that day I said, ‘I’m not going to do it anymore.’

I began to see garbage trucks. Like in the movie ‘The Sixth Sense,’ the little boy said, ‘I see Dead People.’ Well, now ‘I see Garbage Trucks.’ I see the load they’re carrying. I see them coming to drop it off. And like my taxi driver, I don’t make it a personal thing; I just smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on.

Good leaders know they have to be ready for their next meeting. Good parents know that they have to welcome their children home from school with hugs and kisses. Leaders and parents know that they have to be fully present, and at their best, for the people they care about.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let Garbage Trucks take over their day.

Good Thursday Morning dear readers and friends! I am not going to write forever I promise. I just wanted to say, “Thank You for all of your prayers, petitions, candle lighting and everything else that was done for my area of the country.” I have always believed that when Pagans come together, we can accomplish great things. I truly believe that now more than ever. Yesterday, I told you I was going to transfer some more info over from my old group. I got throwed off the internet by a fast-moving storm. I turned the TV over to the Weather Channel and there was a huge storm mass coming our direction. The storm was all red which means this storm system is capable of producing tornadoes. One minute the storm was a huge mass, the next it had split right down the middle. The front part that was still headed our direction was slowly dissolving and eventually disappeared. The other mass took a northerly path and missed us totally. That system was the last system headed toward our direction. What was so unusual was the last system splitting the way it did and then just dissolving. As I watched that system, cold chills ran over my body. I knew exactly why this had happened. It happened because of you and your prayers. I wanted to say thank you, dear friends for helping those of us who are in dire straights. Please continue to pray for them. Also continue to pray that our weather stays clear were we can clean up and get those that lost everything a place to stay and anything else they may need. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

It’s Wednesday Again???

Howdy partners! How y’all doing today? Me, don’t ask! I have never been so sick of stormy weather in my life. I got up this morning at 7:00 a.m. I made my coffee and came in here to sit down and do my daily postings. Well the weather had other plans for me. A storm rolled in and the power went out. The only positive thing was that the coffee got made. I got a cup of coffee and came back in my bedroom in hopes the power would soon be on. Well I got tired of watching the clock, I got an afghan  and my pup and I curled up in the floor. Kiki would wake me up ever so often wanting to play. I would throw her Ricki Raccoon and she would bring it back and we would play for a bit. Then she would figure out that if the power wasn’t on, Momma wasn’t getting up. So I got up at 1:15 p.m., by the sound of the TV being on. But I should have known by now, living out in the boonies when the power comes on we are subject to brown outs. That is why we have surge protectors on everything we own and it was a good thing this morning. I got tired of counting the brown outs. So I decided as frequent as they were coming I didn’t have time to post anything. So I played with the zodiac symbol in the left hand corner. I did good to actually get it posted. Right now things seems to have settled down for a minute. But they are issuing Tornado Warnings all around us and the sky is starting to darken. I am going to try to post the horoscopes, tarot, runes and move some info over from my old group. I just wanted you to know that I haven’t deserted everyone. The weather right now is reeking havoc on everyone. Roads are closed due to high water. Kiki and I had run down to the Dollar General Store (they actually built a Dollar Store out here in the sticks and everyone is thrilled about it). On the way back, we took a route that I thought would be quicker to get home. Yeah right, if you had a canoe. It was a road they hadn’t put a closed sign on yet. It was actually very scary. The road just disappeared into the water and all you could see was water everywhere. If it had been night-time, we would have run right into it and been swepted away. But the water, the storms, the tornadoes and not to mention the lightning has played on all of our nerves. I went last night to get supper down toward the very tip of Kentucky. I had to stop and get gas on the way back and that was where one group of First Responders had set up their base. One of them let me listen to his radio, he was getting reports from the area that a tornado had already destroyed. The other man was watching for a wall cloud and he wasn’t seeing one. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. The First Responder told me their main base was up by me. The main base had fire trucks and ambulances just sitting there waiting. Waiting for us to die in a storm, that’s a scary thought. This is the first time our area has ever been hit with such destruction. I thought the ice storm several years ago was bad but it can’t hold a candle to this. I know there is a lot of individuals that read my blog daily. I would like to ask a very heart-felt appeal to you all, please pray for us. Pray that we have the strength and endurance to go on. Light a candle for those that have lost everything. So far we have been extremely lucky, no one has died from these storms. Please pray for all of our safety. Most of all, please pray that this ends and we can get back to normal, whatever normal might be after all of this. We need your prayers. The people in Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois and Tennessee need you. Please help us, please pray for us.
