Today’s Extra: Survival Guide for Empaths and Highly Sensitive People

Survival Guide for Empaths and Highly Sensitive People

By: Jordyn Cormier

Being an empath or a highly sensitive person (HSP) in the modern world ain’t easy. Everyone is stressed—and empaths and HSPs are the emotional sponges, soaking it all up.

WHAT IS AN EMPATH?

To clarify, being a empath doesn’t just mean you care and feel for other people. It means you actually feel their emotions in your body. It can be sometimes difficult for true empaths to discern whether an emotion they’re experiencing is their own or someone else’s—which can be incredibly overwhelming and depleting.

While being highly sensitive to the needs of others can be a truly wonderful quality, it takes some dedicated effort to manage. It’s ironic that empaths are so good at being there for other people and making others feel better—but it’s often to their own emotional and energetic detriment.

Empaths can easily become oversaturated with emotions, leading them to believe they are depressed, ill or flawed in some way. But that’s not usually the case. A sensitive person just needs time to recenter.

SURVIVING AS A HIGHLY SENSITIVE PERSON OR EMPATH

If you’re an empath, you really need to prioritize your self care. Here are a few basics that every highly sensitive person should have in their toolkits.

Practice breathwork

You know that dramatic friend you have who is always in a crisis? As an empath, it’s important to realize that they can be an energy suck—no matter how much you love them. If, while spending time with them, you can feel your energy being drained, focus on your breathing.

Holding your breath only allows negativity to fester and grow, so breathe deeply to ground yourself. Maybe also treat yourself to a little time out. Take a stroll around the block, a reprieve in the quiet bathroom or a relaxing drive to get away from the contagious drama.

Create physical space between yourself and perceived negativity.

Social situations can be really challenging for HSPs and empaths. Highly empathetic people deeply experience others’ negative energies. In fact, they tend to absorb them.

If you find yourself at a party in a conversation with energy-sucker, make an excuse to take a walk outside to balance and reground yourself. Then, keep your distance as much as you can for the rest of the event.

Social situations are already challenging enough. Create a bubble of safe, positive space around yourself to hold onto your own energy.

Know your boundaries.

As an HSP or empathic person, you probably tend to try to help people in need, no matter what. But when it comes to being there for people and sharing your positive energy, don’t be an overgiver—it’ll only deplete you.

Be polite, but let people know when you’ve reached your limits. Yes, you want to be there for the other person, but you need to honor your needs.

Try to become aware of when your emotional energy is reaching critical levels, and prioritize yourself. Place your oxygen mask on before assisting the person next to you.

Don’t be afraid to say ‘no’.

You simply can’t always be there for everybody. You need to prioritize your own needs, too. So practice saying no.

For instance, one day you’re wiped, but a friend wants to grab a drink and talk about their absolutely horrible day at work. Be polite and honest. Say, “Sorry your day was so rough, but I can’t tonight. I can grab coffee tomorrow and talk all about it, though.” You could even suggest that maybe it’s best for your friend to stay in, take a hot bath, and treat themselves, too!

Saying no isn’t mean. It’s being open and honest. You need to make time for your own needs, too.

Being a highly sensitive person means you need to guard yourself a little more than others. Your powers of sensitivity are a wonderful gift that can really benefit those around you, but you want to make sure that you are not suffering as a result. It may be tough for you, but start putting yourself first.

The Witches Guide to Mondays

The Witches Guide to Mondays

Think for a moment on all of the witchery, magick and enchantments that you have discovered. Don’t be afraid to adjust spells to suit your own specific needs. Any gentle, illusory, and dreamy charms and spells can be enhanced when you work on the day of the week that is dedicated to the moon. Mondays are a fantastic day to boost your psychic abilities and to tune in to your intuition and empathy. It also gives you the opportunity to work with a different lunar phase each and every Monday, which means in one month you could work four different types of moon magicks on Mondays. How’s that for adding to your repertoire? You are going to have mad skills in no time at all.

So light up those lunar scented candles and add a little mystique to your outfit by wearing an enchanting lunar color. Wear your sparkling silver jewelry and maybe add a pair of dangling silver earrings or a pendant shaped like a crescent moon. Create lunar potions and philters; make a dream catcher and give it as a gift to someone you love. Burn some sandalwood or jasmine-scented incense today to inspire the glamour and magick of the moon. Slice up a favorite variety of fruit that is in season for a snack or share it with your love and enjoy his or her lunar and romantic qualities. Brew up a cup of chamomile tea, enchant it with a little moon magick, and relax and get a good night’s sleep.

Most importantly, get outside tonight and watch the moon for a while. What phase is she in? What color was the moon as she rose? Why not start a journal and write down at what location the moon rises and sets for a few seasons? This is a great way to teach you to tune in and to become more aware of the moon and the influence that she pulls into our lives. Try calling on Selene for her magickal assistance, and call Thoth for wisdom and strength. Get to know the Norse Mani and the Latvian Meness. These gods of the moon have plenty to teach, and if you allow their influence to cycle through your life, you’ll receive many blessings. Be imaginative, and create your own personal lunar magick and witchery. Go on….the moonlight becomes you

Take Away Pain Chant

My children grew up sbelieving that just a kiss from mom or grandma would take away their “ouchie”. When my grandchildren came along, after reaching about 2 years old, most did not believe just a mom or grandma kiss would make “boo-boo” stop hurting. So I got a little more creative witchy style by changing the lyrics to the children’s song “Rain, Rain go away…” to chant to help their pain go away

Repeat chant either 3 or 6 or 9 times depending on how long it takes you to minister 1st aid to the child. This chant is strictly for minor scrapes, cuts, and falls. It the injury requires stitches or a head injury causes any length of the child being unconscious, dizziness, double vision, etc seek professional medical care immediately.

Pain, pain go away Chant

Pain, pain go away. Don’t come back another day. Little (child’s name) wants to play.

My youngest granddaughter use this on me when I had tried outside scraping my palms and knees. She very gently wiped the spots with a soapy, dripping washcloth blowing on the abrasion when I flinched. Yes, I had a small mess in my bathroom after she was through being my “doctor” complete with wearing a surgical hat and medicine gloves, as she called them but the cleanup was worth it.

Nighttime vs Daytime When Working Spells

Merry Meet :)))

I’ve been giving you lots of spells to work with lately. We know to work with the moons cycles when casting spells, and how the the planetary alignment can influence the energy that we raise. Another point on casting spells is the time of day that you cast it. So today I wanted to delve into that a bit with all of you for those of you who may not be familiar, as casting spells during the appropriate time of day can help contribute to the effectiveness of your spell as well.

Nighttime: As the Moon is out at night, nighttime energy is more feminine in nature. It’s a time when the veil between the worlds is the thinnest. Spells worked at night should be more personal and emotional in nature. You are appealing to the Mother Goddess. 🙂 An example of a spell during this time would be one to connect with the Goddess, spells to do with love, relationships, etc. Midnight would be the most powerful time to cast these types of spells.

Daytime: Since the Sun is out during the day, the energy would be more masculine during this time. This time is better spells that are more active and energetic, may require strength or aggressiveness. Some examples of spells to work during the daytime would be ones that pertain to business, money, motivation or groups. High Noon would be the best time to cast these types of spells.

The Magickal Day of Friday

The Magickal Day of Friday

Friday falls at the end of the work week for many of us, and that means we get a chance to relax for a little bit! Mark your Fridays with colors like pink and aqua, and metals such as copper. This is a day ruled by the planet Venus, so it should be no surprise that Venus and Aphrodite – goddesses of love and beauty – are associated with Fridays. This is a day named for the Norse goddess Freyja, so be sure to take a moment to honor her as well.

Gemstones associated with Friday include coral, emerald and rose quartz, and plants like strawberries, apple blossoms and feverfew are also related. This is a good day to do spellwork associated with family life and fertility, sexuality, harmony, friendship, growth. Take advantage of Friday’s correspondences and plant a seed, make something grow, and enjoy your blessings

*Note: There are a lot of disputes as to the origins of the word Friday, because there is still a great deal of discussion as to whether it was named for Freyja or Frigga, and whether they were the same deity or two separate ones. Some scholars believe that while they may have eventually become two distinctly different goddesses, they could have had their origins in a single, common Proto-Germanic deity.
