This is Lacy! I adopted her from the Houston SPCA when she was just two months old! I knew she was mine within five minutes of arriving there. She enjoys sleeping in odd spots in the house like under chairs and at the top of the couch. Lacy has lots of energy and is a very independent puppy. Though when she wants to she follows me from room to room in my apartment. She loves to cuddle and sleep at my feet each night as well as let me know when I need to stop doing homework by laying on it. Hi there, my name is Za’rour and my name is Arabic for “Hawthorn.” When I first heard this name I told myself “what kind of name is that???” then I understood that the sound of my name is similar to the Arabic translation for “Mischievous.” Still, I do not know how my parents chose this name, I mean I am so kind and gentle, my voice is hardly heard too, and I do not disturb them at all, unlike my cat-friend who keeps nagging and running around the house. Humans are strange.
Anyways, let me tell you more about me, I remember being so skinny and weak before, but now I am so fluffy, healthy and handsome. I also remember having a family of four cute sisters but now all I care about is my human family, especially mommy who loves me so much to the extent that she is ready to wake up when I do just to play and cuddle with me, although she works so much and she’s most of the time tired, I really appreciate that. I also love the fact that she always gives me treats when I behave, and man those Salmon treats are sooo delicious. In a nutshell, I live a life that most of other cats would envy, I am pampered, taken-care of – although I hate the bathing and nail-clipping part of the care I get – and I would never think of leaving this wonderful family I have. |

Irealize every pet owner believes their furry friend is the ultimate pet of pets. However, Gryffindor is more than a pet to me. As a college student with a busy schedule, Gryffindor is ultimate companion. I can always count on him to greet me each and every time I step through the front door. He anxiously awaits on the same step (where he has a clear view of the driveway) day in and day out and sprints down the stairs to offer a warming hello upon my arrival. Good luck finding a human with that type of commitment! I received Gryffindor as a 21st birthday present. I remember the day I picked him out from a Kansas Humane Society Shelter. I had been previously viewing photos on the shelter’s website days before Gryffindor’s adoption. Growing up, I had the same cat, Snowball, who I loved more than anything in the world. After almost nineteen years with me, Snowball left to join Kitten Heaven. I needed to find not a replacement for Snowball, but a companion that could fill the empty space Snowball had left in my heart and who I could devote my time and attention to the way I did with her.
Then, one day I came across this beautiful gray kitten with the bluest eyes that warmed your heart with one look. “Asher” was his name and he was only weeks old. I saved his photo as the background of my mother and father’s phone screen so they might get a hint of the one thing that would make my birthday special. I would causally throw into conversations what it would be like to be “Asher’s” owner. They would laugh it off and tell me I was being silly. Then around a week later, I remember my father waking me up and asking how I felt about giving “Asher” a home that day. I leaped out of bed and was ready to go in seconds. Once we got to the Humane Society I made an appointment to meet “Asher” before any other kitten. I wanted to keep my options, but the minute they handed him to me and I could feel his tiny little self start purring I knew I had to have him. I viewed a couple more kittens, but none of them greeted me like “Asher” did. He started playing with my shoe strings right away and I couldn’t leave that place without him in hand. We adopted “Asher” that afternoon and that evening a Harry Potter marathon was on. I’m not the biggest HP fan, but a scene was playing in which a professor transforms into a beautiful gray cat. I looked at “Asher” and decided he needed a name as unique as his personality. That’s when “Asher” became my Gryffindor. To this day, the name Gryffindor couldn’t be more fitting. Gryffindor is the ultimate social ham. He loves people and he loves attention. He’s the most agile cat I’ve ever seen. He finds new obstacles to climb every day. He loves paper balls and will fetch them much like a dog would. His personality is the perfect mix of spunk and compassion. He can entertain me for hours but also cuddle with me when I’ve had a bad day. I am the luckiest girl in the world to call Gryffindor mine. |

This is Celestial (Celeste for short), and she’s a Cinnamon Tortoiseshell Tabby. While volunteering at the local shelter we came to know Celeste and she soon won our hearts! Unfortunately the shelter euthanizes strays on schedule. We watched as her carrier slowly made its way toward the top of the list. We just couldn’t let that happen. Her litter was found under the porch of an abandoned house and there were two left. After much deliberation, we decided to bring one sickly, striped, green-eyed kitten into the family! Since then our lives have been enriched with a steady supply of hijinks, acrobatics, amazing saves, and occasional all out lovefests.
She loves to sit upon our 55 gal. fish tank and one day while we were feeding the fish she decided to leap into action and by sheer luck we managed to catch her midair, her athletic body suspended over the open water. Now she’ll try anything to get the colorfull little fishies! She also has bravado, and will walk up to any animal or person she sees to check them out, and then goes about her business as if nothing caught her eye. She’ll then crawl into her box heaven that we built for her and stalk the world, her tail swaying to and fro waiting for the perfect moment…to attack a peice of paper!! Independent, curious to a fault, and always on the stalk, Celeste is more than just a Kitty of the Day… she’s our kitty forever. |

He has a very human like nature. He loves his mom and whines like a baby every time I leave. I usually have to spell out the words if I am getting ready to leave the house so he won’t get upset. He loves to cuddle with me in bed every night just like a person; under the covers and head on the pillow. He follows me from room to room to get my attention. He loves to play with toys that have squeakers and anything that has stuffing. Once the squeakers and stuffing are out, I just add the remains to his toy basket that is full of destroyed toys. I got McCarty at nine weeks old and he is two and a half now and weighs a whopping seventeen pounds. I think mommy needs to cut down on the treats a little! McCarty is everything I need to keep me company and is loved so very much! |

Bojangles is a four and a half month old Boxer, Pitbull mix. She’s roughly three and a half months in the photos. I rescued her at six weeks old. The mother wasn’t producing enough milk and was rejecting her and her sister. She is now an energetic and very very affectionate puppy, and also very well behaved.
She is very outgoing. She loves everybody and loves other animals as well cats and dogs. She is very active and loves to play tug of war the most. She also loves rawhide bones, and she knows sit and lay down very well. And about 70% of the time will shake (but she’s still young). When I come home from work she jumps into my lap and licks me for a good five to ten minutes, because she’s so excited to see me again. She is very affectionate. If she’s not in “play mode,” she likes to just snuggle up next to you and put her head on your lap and sleep. She loves going for rides and when she’s in the car she’s on my lap snuggling up to me and tries to lick me. I love her. |

This is my Kitty Girl who came into my life in a small cardboard box. She was only four or five weeks old when her mother had been run over by a car. My son brought her home hoping that I would take her in, even though we already had three adult cats. I told him she could stay until we found a home for her. She still needed to be bottled fed and taught how to use the litter box. She was such a little princess from the start and before to long had wormed her way into my heart. By this time there was no way I going to give her up.
The first two years of her life she was quite a handful. A little wild child, did not like to be held or loved on. Didn’t even purr for me. But one day she climbed onto my lap, settled in and while I scratched her neck began to purr. I was so shocked!! From that time on she became my little shadow wanting to be loved on every possible moment. At thirteen years old she was diagnosed with diabetes, which was very hard to accept. But we all adjusted to this and she led a well and happy life for over three more years. We lost her this past December. It has been very difficult for me to accept her passing. She was my special little girl, who will be forever in my heart. |

1. Why do some dogs have hair in their ears and some don’t?
Arctic vs. non-Arctic breeds, mostly. Dogs who must survive in cold climes are more likely to have hairy ears. That’s an easy one. Next…?
2. Why does my dog like to stare into my eyes and hold eye contact (not when he wants food or something)?
I will have to ask a behaviorist (or twelve) to get a better handle on this one but here’s what I suspect: Dog domestication has evolved patchily over the last eon or so. Greater domestication is accompanied by behavioral traits that include the very human (and much less dog-like) eye contact thing.
Extended eye contact among dogs is verboten unless you want to spar, but domesticated dogs have come to associate eye contact with humans as a way to get things from us. Wilder dogs (like Morgan) would never deign to beg in this way but happy dogs like Maddie fall all over themselves to get your attenshun* any way they can.
3. Did yoga develop from watching dogs? They totally do a downward dog thing.
Yes. Yogis obviously engage in bio-thievery. They totally stole the pose from dogs.
4. Why do dogs’ pads sometimes smell like evergreen meets rosin? And other times like corn chips?
Knowing your dogs I’d say it depends on the season, the hiking terrain and moisture levels. Got moist feet? Then maybe you’ve got yeast growing there; that can kind of smell like corn chips.
Hiking among the evergreens? Voilà.
5. What is the purpose of a dewclaw?
Vestigial; which means it no longer has a purpose. It is in the process of being evolutionarily rejected, which is why so many purebred and sporting dog owners want them lopped off.
6. Why do some dogs poop every morning like clockwork and other dogs is not as regular?
Why does my receptionist constantly complain of constipation in spite of an Activia habit, and my acupuncturist not-so-subtly tut-tut that my elimination habits are more frequent than most?
Get over it! As long as everything that goes in comes out and no impact on health results … who the frick cares?
7. Why do they say dogs can’t go into restaurants for health reasons — what health reasons?
They lie. Or rather … they are ignorant. They excuse the feverish sneezes of a human child in the table at the front of the restaurant as “cute” while a dog’s under-the-table snores are regarded as “the devil’s music.” (I’m making stuff up now.)
Honestly, I think most restaurants are more worried about dog bites and liability insurance than they are about any health risks. That or they truly are as stupid as all get-out.
8. What makes dog saliva so slippery?
I think I’ve also overheard that it’s the world’s best natural lubricant. Truly, however, I have no answer, other than to note that cat saliva is also incredibly viscous. Maybe someone else out there knows…?
9. If a dog’s tail hangs over its anus why doesn’t it ever get really dirty?
I’m not sure which way to go with this one but I think I’ll err on the side of biology:
Dogs have a lot more natural oils on their fur than we do on our human hairs. These oils repel the mucosal exterior of most dog stool. But that’s not universally true. By virtue of their hairy genetics, some dogs have finer, longer, less oily hair (think Maltese). That’s what a groomer’s “sanitary clip” was invented for: clean tails.

Popoki (Hawaiian for cat) was adopted at two years old (estimated by vet) and has been with us for almost five years. He’s “mostly” a flamepoint Siamese, who loves sightseeing from the window!
Popoki hid from every one for the first four to five weeks after we adopted him. He slowly began moving closer and closer to our common space until he made himself at home. He meows only when hungry or if a neighbor cat comes to his window. He also has an attitude when you aren’t feeding or playing with him on his terms. He turns his back on you, makes short meow sounds, and flicks his tail. He likes to be in the same room as we are, but not too close (unless it’s his idea) Since our cats are always kept indoors, we have a pet stroller for an occasional outdoor stroll. Poki (as I call him) complains when you put him in the stroller, but seems to really enjoy all the sights and sounds around him. He often does somersaults when playing and literally melts when he gets his (hopefully) daily back massage. He is still afraid of new voices, the doorbell, and the sound of plastic bags, but boy is he friendly and loving when he smells a tuna can being opened! For the past few weeks, he has decided that sleeping in our bedroom at night is a given, and I honestly think he knows the sound of the clock when it chimes twelve times (which is when he gets tidbit from my husband’s lunch). With age, he is becoming more affectionate as well (yay), and more of a people cat! |

Although looking after your pet’s insides is extremely important, what you put on the outside makes a huge difference to their health and well-being, too. For both bathing and getting rid of fleas, there are plenty of natural options available at retail centers like Native Remedies. This site offers products that provide a gentler alternative to support your pet’s immune system, and won’t contain potentially harmful chemicals which can wreak havoc with your pet’s health if ingested.
Conscientious Cleaning
Cleaning up after your pet has the potential to be a much greener activity, too. Did you know that every year approximately 10 million tons of pet waste will end up in the nation’s landfills? Clay-based cat litter is not an eco-friendly product, but thankfully there are many biodegradable and organic alternatives available.
The equivalent in “business management” for your dog is the biodegradable waste bag. Picking up after your dog is essential, but using plastic bags won’t help with your green ambitions. Biodegradable bags decompose naturally and can reduce landfill waste substantially. Also, when it comes to all the little accidents that accompany pet training and muddy paw prints, using natural cleaning products such as baking soda and lemon juice helps to reduce the toxins you’re letting loose in your home.
Holistic Health Care
If your pet was to get sick, there are many alternative treatments that you could try. Chiropractic, homeopathic and holistic remedies are becoming more and more common for pets. Acupuncture, veterinary orthopedic manipulation, massage therapy, hydrotherapy and pet rehabilitation are also available. These types of treatments are thought to vastly increase the comfort of pets that suffer from conditions like epilepsy, cancer, allergies, and injury.
While these options can improve your pet’s comfort and overall health, they tend to come with a price. Thus, look into pet insurance options. Note, not all insurance providers include coverage for holistic methods, so be sure to read the coverage details carefully. Embrace pet insurance is one option for alternative therapy coverage. They offer both cat and dog insurance that includes coverage for treatments like chiropractic, acupuncture, and more.
