A Filament Leaps from the Sun

Video Credit & Copyright: Stéphane PoirierExplanation: Why, sometimes, does part of the Sun’s atmosphere leap into space? The reason lies in changing magnetic fields that thread through the Sun‘s surface. Regions of strong surface magnetism, known as active regions, are usually marked by dark sunspots. Active regions can channel charged gas along arching or sweeping magnetic fields — gas that sometimes falls backsometimes escapes, and sometimes not only escapes but impacts our Earth. The featured one-hour time-lapse video — taken with a small telescope in France — captured an eruptive filament that appeared to leap off the Sun late last month. The filament is huge: for comparison, the size of the Earth is shown on the upper left. Just after the filament lifted off, the Sun emitted a powerful X-class flare while the surface rumbled with a tremendous solar tsunami. A result was a cloud of charged particles that rushed into our Solar System but mostly missed our Earth — this time. However, enough solar plasma did impact our Earth’s magnetosphere to create a few faint auroras.

All Signs

This week begins with ease, especially in practical terms because people will support and help each other. However, by Wed., everything changes and in an epic showdown, feisty Mercury joins scrappy Mars in Scorpio to challenge stern Saturn. This is an all-out defiance to authority (whatever authority represents in your life). Authority might be your boss or the head of the family. It might be the government. It might be the church. It might be tradition. Whatever the case, no matter how hard “authority” tries to control or oppress – it will be forced to cave. Clearly, the little guy wins! By the end of the week, all is calm and cool. Oh yeah, this will be the time to put the “b” back in subtle.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This week begins in gentle terms; however, you are concerned with financial matters connected with shared property, jointly-held items, shared responsibilities and dealing with the wealth and resources of someone else. You might also feel a bit challenged having to deal with values that are different from your own? Certainly, some of these issues will come to a head midweek when someone older, perhaps a friend or a person in authority, in a group or an organization, challenges your stance on inheritances, shared property, taxes, debt or your arrangement with someone about shared resources. Things could get nasty. But Venus at the top of your chart will bless you and pave the way for successful relations with almost everyone.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This is a powerful time for you because you look so successful in the eyes of others, especially parents, bosses and VIPs. And to be sure, this is a time of harvest for you when the seeds that you have planted since around 2005 are now coming to fruition. This week starts off gently. Travel plans appeal! You might be involved with someone from another culture? However, be patient with partners and close friends as well as parents and authority figures midweek, when you find yourself at odds with someone. You might attract someone to you who is adamant about their POV. (This never helps.) Be patient. You might play the role of arbitrator or peacemaker. Or maybe someone needs to play this role for you? (Yikes!)

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This is a busy time for you. You are setting your standards high because you want to be efficient, organized in everything you do, and on top of that, you also want to address health issues. Bottom line: You want to whip your life in shape. Midweek however, you will encounter difficulties with someone that might be work-related? Or they could relate to your pet or even your health in some fashion. Whatever happens will feel challenging! Nevertheless, your energy and drive will help you to find a solution and go forward with more confidence. Hey, this is just a brief, dark cloud on your horizon.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Relations with partners and close friends are very supportive now because fair Venus is opposite your sign. Even your relations with members of the general public are warm and friendly. However, parents might have a real challenge midweek dealing with their kids. Oh yeah. Arguments, hissy fits, meltdowns and rebellion are possible scenarios that you might face. Romantic partners might also be at odds with each other. (Kinda nasty.) Do not add fuel to the flame. Use patience and reasoning to establish a calmer, win-win solution with everyone. Because, this is possible! Venus will help you. (Dark chocolate will also help you.)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Lately, you have been super focused on home, family and dealing with increased chaos where you live. This could be due to visiting guests, residential moves, changes on the home front including renovations or decorating projects. It’s enough that this is going on, right? You don’t need more angst from disagreements and arguments. However, this is what might happen midweek. Take a moment and remind yourself that patience is the antidote to anger. Patience doesn’t necessarily remove the cause of the problem but it’s a wonderful temporary benefit. Meanwhile, you will enjoy working this week because relations with coworkers are excellent. (Also remember that family is gold.)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This week continues to be busy and fast-paced because of the demands of errands, the increased activity of people around you, more time spent with siblings and relatives plus you might be reading and studying more than usual as well. Yes, your plate is full. (Save room for dessert.) Venus promotes warm relations with children and romantic lovers. Venus will also attract fun, social occasions to you! However, midweek, you will be at odds with someone. It could be a nasty confrontation. Sometimes, when you’re seriously at odds with someone you have to just accept what is and agree to disagree. This never feels right but what is the alternative?

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Libra rules haute couture. It is also the sign that rules the law, which is why lawyers are such a well-dressed bunch. This week, you might be embroiled with others about financial matters, money issues or disputes about ownership. These disputes might include something related to kids or something related to social plans and vacations. On the upside, your efforts to entertain at home and redecorate are unhindered. All is well there. Distance yourself from heated discussions about money and possessions because you need your analytical energy to appeal to the logic and common sense of others. Time to get things done. I rest my handbag.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You are right in the middle of the action this week because the Sun, Mercury and Mars are lined up in your sign; and by midweek, they are at odds with stern Saturn. (Yikes!) This could mean a major blow up with a parental figure. It might also mean you will encounter some kind of blow up related to home and family. Whatever it is – you don’t need it! Very likely, you will be challenged by authority figures, parents, the law, tradition or the restrictions of something due to an inevitable reality. Note: One definition of maturity is: Learn to accept the restrictions that you must labour under, and then function to the best of your ability within them.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Although this week begins in an easy-going way (and easy-going is your style), nevertheless, midweek, you might feel bothered by something. Perhaps this is something going on behind the scenes? Perhaps it’s something that’s troubling you at a subconscious level? The thing to know is you can simply ride this one out because by the end of the week, all is fine again. Meanwhile, this is a great week to attract money and goodies to you. It’s also an excellent week to shop for beautiful things for yourself and loved ones. (Yesterday, when discussing my grandson’s eclectic taste in music, he said, “It took me a long time to love what I love.”) Ah yes, developing the confidence in one’s tastes.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This week is a bit of a roller coaster ride when it comes to relating to your friends, as well as members of groups and organizations. As the beginning of the week unfolds, all is well. In fact, people are supportive to each other. However, by midweek, you will encounter a real challenge with someone, perhaps related to the authority of a group? Or it could be related to how to spend a certain amount of money? Or it could be related to who has control over money and goods? It might be a real clash — so get ready for this. Quite likely, the powers who oppose you will lose their advantage. This means you simply have to persevere. Be dogged.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is definitely a dicey week for your sign. As mentioned above in All Signs, this week begins in a favourable way with people being helpful and supportive to each other. However, suddenly, midweek everything changes. You will find yourself in conflict with authority figures – parents, bosses, teachers, VIPs and the police. They will dig in their heels. You will dig in your heels. It will be a clash of wills. They might have rules and regulations on their side but you will ignore these and rebel, in order to fight for the improvements and change that you believe are necessary. In this case, you might succeed because the forces of authority are weak, and you are strong.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Be smart and steer clear of groups and organizations that are excited about controversial matters this week – matters involving politics, religion or racial issues. Naturally, it’s good to take a stand on what you believe in. However, this week, especially midweek, people will get their belly in a rash about whatever upsets them, and the result will be turmoil and conflict. Quite likely, nothing will be achieved. If you are trying to push an agenda regarding these matters or something to do with publishing, the media, higher education and the law – whatever forces oppose you will probably dissipate or diminish by the end of the week. This leaves you as the victorious survivor, waving your banner for your cause. Nevertheless, timing is everything. Pick our fights. You gotta know when to hold and when to fold.

Tarot

From Tarotx.com

Today’s tarot cards come from the Rider Waite Tarot Deck.

Four Of Wands

The Four of Wands card describe a couple dancing under a wreath hanging among four sticks. This wreath is similar to the kind that used in traditional Jewish ceremonies and therefore, it represents the time spent completing work and the satisfaction with achieving a goal. Surrounding them is a group of people, and behind them is a large castle which is also decorated with flowers. It seems to be a celebration, an opportunity to return home or a celebration from within the castle.

Phagos

Teaching, education, mastery, virtuosity, legacy

Tree: Beech (Fagus spp.)

Letter: Ph or F

Phagos is a reminder of the mental discipline it takes in the process of acquiring knowledge. When you get to the point of knowing a subject so well, you can teach it effortlessly, then you have mastered the subject on the mental plane, which reverberates through the other planes. Saturated knowledge is knowing a thing inside and out. Those who believe in reincarnation believe this is the kind of knowledge that does not go away when you shed one mortal body for the next one: for instance, a skilled midwife will stand a good chance of coming back as a competent ob/gyn who stumbles upon their talent in a seemingly random way. Or a lute player may be reborn and pick up the guitar at age twelve and learn it faster than any other kid in their class because of knowledge picked up in past lifetimes.

Six

If your life path number is 6, you are someone who thinks, speaks and acts from the heart. You are sincere, loving, warm and affectionate. It would serve you to find a job where you can bring and apply these wonderful qualities, such as a kindergarten teacher, pediatrician, social worker, or a therapist. You are made for long-term relationships and family life. Shallow pursuits and one-night stands aren’t your thing. When you touch someone, it’s real. But because you are too focused on the relational aspects of your life, you may end up bringing those people who don’t care as much as you do, into your life. If the digits of a date add up to number 6, it’s a wonderful time to create love! Work on a universal theme, help poor communities in distant places or the homeless on your block. It’s the best time to be there for other people.

The Galaxy Between Two Friends

Image Credit & Copyright: Martin Lefranc

Explanation: On an August night two friends enjoyed this view after a day’s hike on the Plateau d’Emparis in the French Alps. At 2400 meters altitude the sky was clear. Light from a setting moon illuminates the foreground captured in the simple vertical panorama of images. Along the plane of our Milky Way galaxy stars of Cassiopeia and Perseus shine along the panorama’s left edge. But seen as a faint cloud with a brighter core, the Andromeda galaxy, stands directly above the two friends in the night. The nearest large spiral galaxy, Andromeda is about 2.5 million light-years beyond the stars of the Milky Way. Adding to the evening’s shared extragalactic perspective, the fainter fuzzy spot in the sky right between them is M33, also known as the Triangulum galaxy. Third largest in the local galaxy group, after Andromeda and Milky Way, the Triangulum galaxy is about 3 million light-years distant. On that night, the two friends stood about 3 light-nanoseconds apart.

November 2021 Full Moon Details

From MoonGiant.com

With the changing of the seasons, November’s full moon marks the beginning of the end. This year, it is the very last full moon before the winter solstice, which makes it the Mourning Moon according to Pagan tradition. In many different cultures, November’s full moon is intimately connected with death and loss, on both a literal and symbolic level. The Celts, for instance, called it the Reed Moon, comparing the mournful music made by wind instruments to the ghoulish sounds of spirits being drawn into the underworld. And not without good reason – the Full Mourning Moon marks a dangerous time of the year where people could easily slip into the underworld with a single misstep.

We may enjoy the luxury of winter coats and central heating now, but freezing to death during the long, dark winters used to be a very real threat to early inhabitants of Northern America. In order to survive, making warm winter clothing out of beaver fur was crucial for American colonists and Native American tribes. This is why November’s full moon is also known as the Beaver Moon. During this month, beavers are very active, working hard on dam construction, and so this was a good time to start harvesting their fur.

Missing the timing for this would mean death for these early Northern American communities, as the rivers would freeze over, making it impossible to set out traps. Many Native American tribes, including the Cree, Arapaho, and Abenaki tribes, called November’s full moon the “Moon When Rivers Start to Freeze”. This name drives home the importance of November’s full moon as a signal for these Native American tribes to begin trapping beavers before it was too late, as well as to complete their preparations for the darkest depths of winter.

For the Pagans, on the other hand, the final stage of their winter preparations involve the very important process of “mourning” – which is why they call the last moon before the winter solstice the Mourning Moon. After a full year of accumulating possessions, both physically and otherwise, the Mourning Moon is the perfect time to let go of old, unnecessary things, while giving yourself permission to mourn their passing. Practicing Pagans may perform a moonlit ritual where they write down the things they want to rid themselves of, and ask their Goddess for help in removing unwanted burdens.

Pagan traditions aside, anyone can benefit from taking the time to self-reflect and to let go. Take advantage of the Full Mourning Moon this November to look back on your year and take stock of your desires, your ambitions, your mental and behavioral habits, and the people you spend your energy on. Clean your living and work spaces, and sort out the physical objects that are not contributing to your well-being. Take the time to fully mourn and let go of anything – or anyone – that does not bring you joy, so that you can begin to move forward, unfettered, towards a lighter and happier new year.

The Dark Seahorse in Cepheus

Image Credit & Copyright: Valerio Avitabile

Explanation: Light-years across, this suggestive shape known as the Seahorse Nebula appears in silhouette against a rich, luminous background of stars. Seen toward the royal northern constellation of Cepheus, the dusty, obscuring clouds are part of a Milky Way molecular cloud some 1,200 light-years distant. It is also listed as Barnard 150 (B150), one of 182 dark markings of the sky cataloged in the early 20th century by astronomer E. E. Barnard. Packs of low mass stars are forming within, but their collapsing cores are only visible at long infrared wavelengths. Still, the colorful stars of Cepheus add to this pretty, galactic skyscape.

Trees reflected in water in Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Named for the region’s Maasai people, this wildlife refuge in southwest Kenya shares a border with the vast Serengeti National Park in neighboring Tanzania. Together, the contiguous reserves cover over 6,000 square miles of East Africa, protecting some of the continent’s most iconic, and endangered, wildlife. Much of the time, the grasslands here in Maasai Mara are dry, but during the rainy season the rivers run high, seasonal ponds attract great numbers of animals, and—as seen in our image— pools of water reflect majestic acacia trees. It’s a picture of sublime stillness, but it’s certainly not always this peaceful in the reserve: The annual great migration sees millions of animals pass through the grasslands of this protected park in search of good grazing.

On this day the Moon will be in a Waxing Crescent Phase. A Waxing Crescent is the first Phase after the New Moon and is a great time to see the features of the moon’s surface. During this phase the Moon can be seen in the wester sky after the sun dips below the horizon at sunset. The moon is close to the sun in the sky and mostly dark except for the right edge of the moon which becomes brighter as the days get closer to the next phase which is a First Quarter with a 50% illumination.
