February Birthstone – Amethyst

The gemstone representing the month of February is the Amethyst.  It is also a representative of the Zodiac stone for the constellation of Pisces.  Amethyst is a variation of quartz, and is identified by its long prismatic crystals.  These crystals have six sides at each end that can only show their color at the tips.  Though it can come in many shades, it is only identified as the color purple.  Depending on where they originate, this gemstone is unique to its region and the mine from which it came from. Amethyst has been found in Mexico, Brazil, Namibia, Zambia and also mined in the United States from North Carolina and Maine.

In the most of the northern hemisphere, the month of February can be a one of the coldest and darkest during the winter season. During this time many suffer bouts of depression and sadness. It comes as no surprise then, the Amethyst can be given as a gift to lift a loved ones spirits so that their birth-month can be a time of celebration, even in the darkest of times. It is more than well-known that specific gemstones have been designated to symbolize our birth-month. Each gemstone in the Gregorian calendar offer certain gifts of positive energy to their owners according to the season and time of year. When one is in touch with the specific powers and special energies from each precious stone, they will be gifted with many positive attributes to last throughout their lives.

The name “amethyst” is Greek for “not drunken”, and believed that it would deter the effects of drinking alcohol in excess.  In saying this, it comes as no surprise that it symbolizes sobriety, which in turn might bring one wisdom and security.  A Greek, mythological story tells that, Dionysus, the god of intoxication, one day had been outraged by an insult from a mortal he had encountered, who then created Tigers to deal his wish to have revenge on the mortal.  Amethyst, a young maiden who was on her way to pay tribute to the goddess Diana, happened to appear in her path en route.  She turned a statue in to a crystalline quartz, so as to protect Amethyst from the apparent danger.  At the sight of the beautiful stone, she cried tears of wine.  Her tears stained the quartz purple, then was born amethyst.

The color purple in itself was the color of royalty, making the Amethyst noble enough to have been worn by powerful monarchs.  They are inlaid on the British Crown Jewels and were also the  beloved gemstone of Egyptian Royalty and Catherine the Great.  It is the stone of Bishops and is the symbol of piety.  For those who might receive an amethyst as a gift, it is also the symbol to create calmness and tranquility, it also grants balance in emotional times.  It was also worn to protect soldiers from the weapons of war and to give them victory over their enemies, also to ensure luck to hunters that they might have a successful kill.

The February birthstone of amethyst is also referred to as the “stone of lovers” and is the stone of St. Valentine, who is told to have always worn it.  During the days of romance and chivalry in the Middle ages, an amethyst in the shape of a heart created the greatest earthly passion a couple to remain in love  for the rest of their lives.

The Witches Spell for March 11th – Quit Smoking Spell

Gothic Comments=

TO QUIT SMOKING

(or drinking or using drugs)

On the night of a full moon (preferably) or during the Waning Moon, make a quit-smoking gemstone candle.

Empower three or more small pieces of amethyst and three or more large pieces of amethyst with the power to remove your addiction to cigarettes.

Now make a black candle (this can be done easily by melting those cute little black six-inch household candles over low heat, and then pouring the melted wax into a glass container (which you have prepared with metal tab and wick).

Now add the three or more small pieces of amethyst to the melted wax in the glass container. You may also wish to add appropriate oil, such as Patchouli, to the melted wax, to give it added power. Allow the candle to cool. You may wish to reserve a small amount of wax to “top off” the candle in case it caves in while cooling. Once the candle is ready, you may begin the spell.

Place the candle on your altar and ring it with the three large pieces of amethyst. Light the candle and gaze into its flame. Visualize yourself being free from the addiction to cigarettes. Visualize your cravings dissipating. Visualize the toxins in your body being removed. Hold this visualization for as long as possible. Now allow the candle to burn down completely. You may wish to repeat this spell for added strength. You may make more candles, or simply use a black candle, ringed with amethyst stones. When the Waxing Moon period begins,

This gemstone purportedly protects from drunkenness and can even help someone recovering from a bad breakup to stop obsessing over their ex. This stone is also recommended for stress removal and is believed to help treat mild mental conditions. Hold this stone in your receptive hand (the hand opposite that you write with) and its peaceful vibrations will soon soothe and calm. It’s a true gem of a stone.

Gemstone of the Day – Amethyst

Gemstone of the Day

Amethyst

Amethyst: Increases spiritual awareness, has a calming and soothing influence,
has the ability to transmute negative into positive, and is very effective as a
healing stone. Warmed and placed on the forehead and temples, it is good for
headaches. Has the ability to draw through it forces directed towards the body
and repels vibrations which the body doesn’t need, thus releasing only the
energy patterns beneficial to the body. Best worn in healing near the heart
center. Opens up spiritual and psychic centers. Helps prevent drunkeness.

The Witches Magick for Oct. 18th – Second Sight Spell

Second Sight Spell

Goal: To increase psychic abilities.

Items Needed:

Purple candle

Piece of amethyst.

Be careful what you ask for-psychic abilities can be a mixed blessing. If you want to work on expanding yours, go slowly and don’t forget to use protective shields. A good familiar can help ground you while you do psychic work if you ask nicely. This spell was originally published in, “Circle, Coven & Grove: A Year of Magickal Practice,” as “Spell to Open the Inner Eye.”

Perform this spell under the full moon–outside, if possible. Light the candle and hold the amethyst up to your third eye (between your eyebrows and up a bit).

“Moon, moon, burning bright
Help me hone my inner sight
Make my vision clear and true
Show me what I need to do
Whether cards or stones of old
Show me what I need to know
Guide my heart and guide my hand
Help me see and understand.
So Mote It Be.

Try to stay open to any messages you might get through your second sight. Be particularly alert to dreams and portents

The Witches Spell for Oct. 4th – So Much to Do, So Little Time

The Witches Spell for October 4th

So Much to Do, So Little Time

No matter how hard you work, you never seem to get caught up. If stress and frustration are getting you down, this spell offers a welcome respite from workplace demands.

Tools:

Lavender incense
An incense burner
A light blue candle
A candleholder
Matches or a lighter
A bathtub
Essential oil of vanilla
4 good-sized chunks of amethyst

When: Any time

Cast a Circle around your bathroom. Fit the incense and candle into their respective holders, then light both. Fill the bathtub with pleasantly hot water. Add a little essential oil of vanilla to the bathwater.

Wash the amethysts with mild soap and water, then set one on each corner of the bathtub. Climb into the tub and make yourself comfy. Feel the amethysts drawing off your stress and neutralizing it. Feel your frustrations and anxieties dissolving into the bathwater. The trick is not to think about anything outside the walls of the bathroom.

When you worry about the past or future, you block receptivity to new ideas and guidance that could help you resolve problems. If a troublesome thought pops into your mind, send it into the water or give it to the amethysts. Soak for as long as you like until you feel calm, rested, and confident that all is well.

When your peace of mind is restored, get out of the tub. As the water drains away, visualize your cares flowing away with it. Pick up the amethysts and thank them. Then wash them with clean water (not the bathwater) and mild soap and pat them dry. Extinguish the candle and incense, or allow them to burn down in a safe place. Open the Circle and emerge renewed.
