St. Clement

 

St. Clement, the patron of blacksmiths and an aspect of the Norse wizard Wayland Smith, is honored on this day. Apparently ently of Jewish origin, he is traditionally considered as the third pope after St. Peter. Additionally, St. Clement was the patron of hatters. While fleeing from his prosecutors, his feet became blistered, and to ease the discomfort he placed wool between his feet and sandals. From the perspiration and pressure sure of his feet the wool became compressed and assumed a uniformly compact substance, which has since been designated as felt. In Rome it is said that he improved on the product to produce felt for hatters. On this day most Catholic countries, especially Ireland, hold festivals in his honor.
