The scarecrow normally conjures up harvests, autumn skies and pumpkins plump for the carving, yet its empowerment and placement were always part of spring rites and an intricate piece of garden magick. Like many vehicles from the old country, these were specific rules on how to prepare and handle one’s garden guardian. A protective and good fortune device, the scarecrow didn’t secure just the garden, it protected the prosperity and welfare of the entire family. Here are the rules, if you would like to make your own scarecrow.
When building your scarecrow, always use natural fibers and old clothes–never use clothes from an enemy to dress your scarecrow.
Sew or stuff protective charms in the arms and sleeves of the device. From runic sigils to specially bless charms, trinkets, and dried herbs, each choice should be associated with your true desires.
Like it or not, the energy of the scarecrow is often used to create protection through humor–think of it as the light of laughter.
A healer’s scarecrow should contain both comfrey and horehound.
It is bad luck to erect your scarecrow before Easter.
It is bad luck to erect your scarecrow on May Day.
Never, ever wear any items that has been worn by a scarecrow–this is thought to bring death to the household
Your scarecrow must be given shade on the longest day of the year to ensure luck and prosperity.
Finally, and most importantly, your scarecrow must be burned before November 1, preferably on Halloween Night of October 31. Easy single part of the scarecrow must be fired–the clothing, the charms, even the pole he rests on. If this is not done, bad luck will plague the entire family.
Essential oils can keep your plants happy and healthy–just add formula to one gallon of water. Water plant well before applying solution. Shake bottle vigorously and spray your floral friends. Spray plants lightly every thirty days. If you don’t wish to make your own sprays, buy organic soap sprays at your local nursery.
This morning Gebo of Freyja’s Aett popped out of my pouch pronounced “gay-boe or yee-boe” (G: Gift) Gifts, both in the sense of sacrifice and of generosity, indicating balance. All matters in relation to exchanges, including contracts, personal relationships and partnerships.
A handshake seals an agreement. Join with similar and free individuals. Separateness as well as unity. Your situation is moving towards partnership, but to accept this relationship as a gift from destiny, you yourself must be whole and independent. The hand offered to you is not meant merely to bail you out of a mess, but to serve as part of a joint endeavor, allowing you both to achieve more then you could achieve alone. Mutual support between you and a partner is essential. This rune promises fruitful co-operation and a harmonious relationship. It signifies financial rewards and the gift of greater understanding. Difficulties will be followed by a period of relief and achievement.
Gebo Merkstave (Gebo cannot be reversed, but may lie in opposition): Greed, loneliness, dependence, over-sacrifice. Obligation, toll, privation, bribery. (Note: the reversed or merkstave definitions are included only for reference as they apply to a multi-rune cast and not to a single rune that’sdrawn blindfrom the pouch) As with all, take only what feels right to you and disregard the rest. **a portion of today’s rune meaning/description was kindly provided by Ingrid Halvorsen at www.sunnyway.com/runes/ and used here with her gracious permission**

General Meaning: Supreme success! Like the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, a person whose fortunes have turned for the better shines as bright. At the core of this success lies unselfishness and modesty, for it is the tendency of a flexible or yielding nature to bind powerful forces to it, particularly when prosperity begins to manifest. When power is wielded with grace and dignity, there is supreme success and great abundance!
Ah, but be careful. Along with any accumulation of wealth or influence can come pride and arrogance. Fight such tendencies if you intend to continue enjoying your bliss. Stay attentive enough to manage your affairs well. And remember that while material prosperity certainly beats the alternative, it is only one of many elements of a satisfying life.
General Meaning: What has traditionally been known as the Judgement card, sometimes entitled Resurrection, represents the great reunion that the ancients believed would happen once in every age. This was the time when souls are harvested and taken Home to their place of origin, outside the solar system. Then the World is seeded with a batch of new souls and the process starts over.
From a modern point of view, this great reunion — which includes every personality that you have ever been and every soul that you have done deep work with — reunites to consciously complete the process. In a way, we symbolically celebrate this returning to center every year on our birthday.
In personal terms, the Judgment cards points to freedom from inner conflicts, and so clear a channel, that the buried talents and gifts of past incarnations can come through an individual in this lifetime. This card counsels you to trust the process of opening yourself, because what emerges is of consistently high quality. You can effortlessly manifest as a multi-dimensional being, and assist in evoking that response from others.
This new astrological year is supercharged by the Sun’s conjunction with Uranus and Jupiter’s presence in the zodiac’s risk-taking sign Aries. Impulsiveness and originality are riding high and motivated by itches for change. It’s time to reinvent ourselves with updated looks and fresh attitudes. The desire for freedom is so strong that it’s difficult to take orders, which can provoke conflict with authorities. Yet this hunger for stimulation encourages bolder behavior such as starting a new business or a taking relationship in a totally different direction. Being a pioneer is sometimes lonely but it’s often easier to fly solo when exploring new territory.
It’s the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, a day of equal light and dark and the first day of a new astrological year. The Sun moves into impulsive Aries today, pushing energy ahead without concern about what may be blocking its expression. Vegetation grows anew with rejuvenated force. Although the relationship-oriented Libra Moon encourages us to be nice, an emotionally intense Venus-Pluto aspect coaxes us to share our deepest passions.
Aries Horoscope (Mar 21 – Apr 19)
The Sun’s visit to your sign should boost your vitality and provoke you to initiate action. You are very eager now to start something new, but it makes sense to moderate your impulses. Instead of wasting energy on an unsuitable venture, think twice before you cannot undo what you’ve done. If it still seems like a good idea after some serious thought, then go ahead with your plan.
Taurus Horoscope (Apr 20 – May 20)
Although plants and animals respond positively to the new spring season, you may be less expressive. But your introversion today isn’t about the fear of being seen; it’s just that you may be busy doing important spiritual processing. Don’t allow anyone to call you stubborn now; you’re more eager for change than usual. However, take the time you need to feel safe enough before coming out of your shell.
Gemini Horoscope (May 21 – Jun 20)
If you are naturally extroverted, the Sun’s entry into your 11th House of Friends marks an even busier social month ahead. You are now less interested in working hard to get ahead than taking it easy with your buddies and workmates. Instead of jumping through hoops to be noticed, relax and lose yourself in the group. There’s no need to stir up any more trouble than is necessary.
Cancer Horoscope (June 21 – Jul 22)
This is quite a stressful day with random thoughts encouraging you to swing into action without any prior reflection on what you’re about to do. This spontaneous behavior goes against your reflective nature, but it’s a tough day to wait patiently for a cosmic starting gun. Ultimately, you should be able to restrain yourself, but still could experience somatic discomfort if you don’t express your feelings. Be open to changing your mind, for the alternatives will continue to look better as the day goes on.
Leo Horoscope (Jul 23 – Aug 22)
Last year’s unfulfilled dreams fade away as the Sun’s entry into your 9th House of Big Ideas draws you into the future. But this cosmic turning point is not about defeat. In fact, you don’t have the luxury of focusing on failure. Forget about the past and look forward toward a successful future. Although it may take a while to feel as if you are gaining ground again, don’t lose sight of the prize.
Virgo Horoscope (Aug 23 – Sep 22)
You may be wondering if your friends are supporting your efforts now or just pacifying you with approving nods. The truth is that you won’t necessarily know if someone’s working against your progress. Unfortunately, it may be a waste of time and energy trying to figure it out. Just proceed slowly until you’re given the green light. It’s more important to enjoy yourself while working toward your goals today than it is to reach them.
Libra Horoscope (Sep 23 – Oct 22)
You are naturally predisposed toward working and playing with others, yet today your friend or partner might suggest that it’s time to do something on your own. Don’t think this is a rejection; it really isn’t personal. It’s just part of the evolution of any long-term relationship. Once you reestablish your metaphysical center, it will be even more fruitful to reunite and share your experiences with each other.
Scorpio Horoscope (Oct 23 – Nov 21)
It’s frustrating to see all the options in front of you, knowing that your path has already been chosen for now. Even a slight improvement in the weather could be enough of a reason to increase your desire to set responsibilities aside and go out to play. Unfortunately, the timing isn’t right. Do your chores first and take care of your obligations before distracting yourself with something fun.
Sagittarius Horoscope (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
You are probably feeling pleased with yourself now because your creative energy is running strong. It’s easy to express yourself however you choose today. But something still prevents you from having as much fun as you expected. Letting go of previous assumptions can help, yet the ultimate solutions come with time. There’s no need to be in such a hurry; slow down and enjoy the present moment.
Capricorn Horoscope (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
You may not respond well to someone pushing you to make a quick decision. You could even become argumentative if you have to defend your right to move at your own speed, rather than follow another person’s arbitrary schedule. However, turning this difference of opinion into an open conflict is not a smart idea and won’t bring you any closer to your heart’s desire. Loosen up; your flexibility in response to external demands can turn a difficult situation around to your advantage.
Aquarius Horoscope (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
You may be dealing with conflicting agendas today. You need some downtime and think that working on your own is a smart idea. But don’t miss your chance to learn from the people in your immediate environment. Unfortunately, there’s no way to be alone and with others simultaneously. You can, however, benefit from the best of both worlds if you alternate your approach throughout the day.
Pisces Horoscope (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
It may seem as if others are just beginning their projects, yet you already started yours a while back. Take your efforts to the next level by creating more stability in your life. This could involve a new and different approach to allocating your time. Instead of focusing on an inspirational or creative process, increase productivity by prioritizing your tasks and then doing them methodically, one after another.
