‘THINK on THESE THINGS’

‘THINK on THESE THINGS’
By Joyce Sequichie Hifler

Haven’t you heard someone say, after experiencing something either good or bad, “I knew it was going to be that way.” And perhaps the conviction was very strong that certain conditions would take a definite turn. But much of the time we say it not out of conviction, but resignedly, agreeing beforehand that something will be a certain way, and usually with dire overtones.

It used to be believed that we had no power to control anything coming to us. We were mere victims of circumstances, almost like stones waiting to be kicked aside. But we were taught, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so he is.”

We must not be so presumptuous as to believe we know everything there is to know about the workings of the mind. But we attract a great many of our problems simply by dwelling on them in our thoughts.

Premonition, or “knowing” things are going to be a certain way, is merely giving us a little time to head off the trouble. Such things should be a challenge, not an accepted rule. “Know” better until you believe it into conviction and into being.

Elder’s Meditation of the Day – March 6

Elder’s Meditation of the Day – March 6

“And there are Four Corners of the Earth that we talk about, the Four Colors of people, and the Four Winds. You see the winds-they are spirits.”

–Grandfather William Commanda, ALGONQUIN

The Elders teach us about the four directions. If we learn about direction, we also learn about attention, about focus, and about power. Each direction has spiritual power. In the morning, go outside, face the East and get still; then, listen to your thoughts. After you have done this for a while, turn and face the West. Get quiet once again and listen to your thoughts. Did your thinking change when you changed direction?

Great Spirit, teach me the power of the four directions.

March 6 – Daily Feast

March 6 – Daily Feast

Remember when you do anything, there will be someone that will find fault, no matter what you do. The pleasure of an unhappy person is to find something wrong in others to salve his own discontent. The Cherokees believe that tests sharpen their wit and help them a s qua dv, win or triumph over opposite powers. It would be beneath them to accept criticism as something they must overcome. The Cherokees flick it off like to si, pesky mosquitos. We all try to understand our differences of opinion, to care what effect we cause in other people. But the bane of anyone’s existence is ignorance – our own. We want more than anything to correct what we know is wrong. And what we find wrong in others may be a reflection of our own wrongs.

Runecast for 3/6

The rune for today is Raidho, or Rad https://i0.wp.com/www.sunnyway.com/runes/raidho.gif (R: Wagon or chariot.) Travel, both in physical terms and those of lifestyle direction. A journey, vacation, relocation, evolution, change of place or setting. Seeing a larger perspective. Seeing the right move for you to make and deciding upon it. Personal rhythm, world rhythm, dance of life. Birds fly south, but return in the spring to their native places. Travel far and you can bring together many threads in your life. The situation most important for you now is probably to do with traveling – either a journey you are already making or one which you wish to make. Another important concern is your desire to connect and communicate with people who are far away. Often, the goal of this kind of travel is an event or an achievement which you attain at the end of the journey. For example, this may be some kind of knowledge which you wish to attain. This rune reminds you that the final purpose of all traveling is to integrate new experience with past experience and get a better sense of your life, so that you see yourself in a wider perspective. If you forget this purpose, you may easily lose yourself in new impressions and become ambiguous and confused. You may feel a need to divide your efforts into several areas in order to succeed with a number of different concerns. The main thing is not to separate but to unify different parts of your life by taking into account new possibilities and understanding.

Raidho Reversed or Merkstave: Crisis, rigidity, stasis, injustice, irrationality. Disruption, dislocation, demotion, delusion, possibly a death.

As with all, take what resonates with you and disregard the rest.

Today’s Meditation 3/6

Today’s Meditation:

It’s very easy not to laugh.  Laughter tends to be a reflection of joy or happiness, and many of us grow up to learn not to trust that joy because something is probably going to happen to take it away from us.  But it truly is “cheap medicine,” and many studies have shown that laughter actually improves our health; in fact, some people have recovered in amazing ways from serious illnesses by focusing on things that make them laugh, like their favorite comedies on television.

Laughter makes us brighter; it puts a sparkle in our eyes and brightens our faces.  The sound of laughter can be infectious, and other people can benefit from our laughter.  I know that I feel great when I’m laughing, as long as I’m not laughing at someone or at someone’s expense.

Whenever I’m in stressful periods of my life, I make it a point to find a comedy or two on TV, usually in syndication so I can watch them every day, and I set aside an hour each afternoon to watch them, relax, and laugh.  When I was working on two MA’s at the same time, the shows were Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs.  Later on, when I was incredibly busy with work and other stuff, they were The Simpsons and Seinfeld.  It doesn’t matter what the shows are–as long as they make me laugh, then I’m getting a very real benefit from them.

I also tend to read things like Calvin and Hobbes, for I know that a good laugh can make me feel much better on many different levels.

If we sit around and wait for laughter to show up, if we expect funny things to happen without looking for them, then we’re bound to be disappointed.  But if we make time for things that will make us laugh, we’re going to find that the laughter becomes a very important part of who we are.  The more I laugh, the easier it becomes for me to laugh, and I’m very thankful that I’ve made plenty of time to practice.

Today’s I Ching Hexagram for 3/6

Today’s I Ching Hexagram for Everyone:

13: Fellowship

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Hexagram 13

General Meaning: Fellowship. When communal bonds unite people, great success is possible. But such bonds can develop only when personal interests are subordinated to goals that serve the greater good of all. The broader the basis for action, the greater the benefits that can be achieved. And conversely, the greater the potential good, the more powerful the support behind it. A spirit of cooperation steadies the boat, but it helps to have a beautiful island to row towards.

Learn to respect the strength in diversity, for a community’s true power lies not in its numbers, but in the diverse skills and resources of its members. Just as the stoutest walls are reinforced with many different materials, so the strongest groups allow differences to co-exist inside the whole.

With a unified group solidly behind you, even difficult enterprises can be attempted without great risk.
