Jupiter Roman King of the Gods

Jupiter

Roman King of the Gods

In terms of Roman mythology, the god Jupiter is the king. In fact, he is often referred to as the king of the gods. He may not be the original creator of the MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURES that dominated tales and lore; that distinction belongs to his father Saturn. But Jupiter is the main man, a la ZEUS in Greek mythology.

Mythology dominated religious culture in Rome up until the point in which Christianity took over. Until that happened, Jupiter was the main deity. He was the god of the sky and, along with the help of the kings of the time, established principles of the Roman religion.

His similarities with Zeus and the GREEK MYTHS didn’t stop with their connections with the sky and thunderbolts. Jupiter was brother to two other gods: Neptune and Pluto. Like the Greeks, each of these three gods controlled one realm of existence: the sky (Jupiter), the sea (Neptune), and the underworld (Pluto), with Jupiter being the most powerful.

Herbal Magickal Correspondences

The power behind herb magic is formless, shapeless, eternal. It doesn’t care whether you call on it in the name of a Witch Goddess or the Virgin Mary – or tap it within no religious framework at all. It is always there, present in abundance no matter where we are or where we travel in the universe.
Though the power is formless, some materials contain higher concentrations of power than others; these include plants, gems, and metals. Each substance also contain different types of power, or vibrational rates. The vibrations of a piece of pine wood, for example, are far different from those of a perfect, faceted diamond.
This vibratory rate is determined by several factors: chemical make-up, form, density, and so on. The powers resident in herbs are determined by the plant’s habitat, scent, color, form, etc. Similar substances usually possess similar vibrations.
Herb magic, then, is the use of herbs to cause needed changes. These plants contain energies – each as distinct as human faces. For maximum effect, the herbs chosen for a spell should possess vibrations that match your need. Cedar is fine for attracting money, but wouldn’t be of help in a fertility spell.
How does herbal magic work? First, there must be a need. A desire often masquerades as a need, but in magic a “desire” is not enough; there must exist an all-encompassing need.
The nature of the need determines which plants are used. Attracting love, for example, is a common magical need and several dozen plants do the job. (A comprehensive list of plants and their corresponding magical needs is coming up…)
Next, a spell or ritual may need to be devised; much herb magic doesn’t need a complete spell, but some of it does. This spell may be as simple as tying up the herbs in a piece of cloth, or placing them around the base of a candle, lighting the wick, and visualizing your need.
If you wish, your spell can be complex, involving boiling water in a cauldron over a mesquite-wood fire at the edge of the desert while waiting for the Moon to rise, before throwing roots and leaves into the pot.
Third, the herbs can be enchanted to ensure that their vibrations are attuned to the need. To do this, you can simply hold the plant material in your hands and visualize aligning the vibrations of the plant(s) with your magical need.
For example: “I gather you, rosemary, herb of the sun, to increase my mental powers and concentration.”
Fourth, the spell is worked, if you choose to perform this step.
Fifth, once the spell has been worked, or the herbs enchanted and the need visualized, it should be forgotten. This allows it to “cook” and bring your need into manifestation.
When baking a cake, if you look into the oven every few minutes the cake will be spoiled. In magic, as in cooking, keep the oven door shut!
And there you have it. This is how herb magic is worked. Does it sound basic? It is. These are the first steps. As with any art, the student may take herb magic further, exploring new territories. For instance, you may wish to incorporate planetary and days-of-the-week correspondences into your herbal magic workings as well.

All Signs

This week the big news is about Venus. Fair Venus is normally in a sign for three weeks. This week, early Tuesday morning, Venus moves into Aries to stay until March 1. It then goes retrograde and slips backwards into Pisces on March 27. (This means Venus was in Aries for 8 weeks, which is twice as long as usual.) But lo! Venus continues slipping back in Pisces until it turns direct on April 12, after which it moves forward and re-enters Aries on April 30 where it then stays until June 6. Wow! So instead of its usual sojourn of roughly three weeks, Venus will visit Aries for a total of 15 weeks. Venus affects our relationships and our money. Yes, love and money. Read on to learn what this will mean for your sign. Meanwhile, we all know that Cole’s Law is just thinly sliced cabbage.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

This is a popular week! Not only will you have increased interaction with friends and groups, you’ll be more involved with younger people. Note: This is an excellent time to make future goals. Meanwhile, fair Venus moves into your sign on Tuesday where it will stay until the end of March. Usually, Venus is in your sign for about three weeks so this long stretch is a major bonus because Venus will increase your desire to relate to others; and at the same time, make you charming and diplomatic. Venus will manifest vacations, enjoyment with friends and fun socializing because Venus ranks pleasure above work. Shop for wardrobe goodies because you will like what you see in the mirror.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

You look fabulous to others because the Sun is at the top of your chart casting you in a flattering light. Make the most of this. Go after what you want. Conversations with authority figures will go your way. Meanwhile, this week Venus slips into a hidden part of your chart to stay until the end of March. Among other things, this can promote secret love affairs. (You ripe juicy peach!) It will also make you feel more selfless and generous to others, especially someone who needs your help. Some of you will choose to work for a charitable organization. Whatever happens, you will have more forbearance and grace to deal with whatever arises. (I’m impressed.)

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Your desire to travel, explore, learn fascinating things and meet interesting people continues. Therefore, grab any chance to travel or be a tourist in your own city. Likewise, grab any chance to take a course or learn something new. With lucky Jupiter in your sign until summer, you are blessed! (Remember: Jupiter is in your sign only once every 12 years.) This week fair Venus enters your House of Friendships, which makes you feel friendly towards everyone. It’s a great time for parties, fun outings and interactions with friends and groups. You’ll find it easier to be loving and affectionate. (A friend could become a lover.) All group settings, including business conferences are favoured. Lucky you!

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Since early January, Mars has been retrograde in your sign, making you question yourself and feel uncertain about pursuing some goals. It has robbed you of energy; and yet, made you frustrated and easily angered, which in turn, enables old disputes. Fortunately, on the 24th of this month, Mars will no longer be retrograde. (A welcome reprieve.) Meanwhile, a lovely, ameliorating influence begins this week as fair Venus moves to the top of your chart creating favourable circumstances for your business and professional life. People will ask for your advice about redecorating, layout work and design – how to make something look better. New love with a boss or someone in authority might percolate. Life is getting better.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Respect your need for more sleep and naps. (Go to bed.) Meanwhile, this week your focus on partners and close friends is more objective, which means you can see how to improve these relationships by changing your behaviour. (Remember, you can react or respond. Your call.) Meanwhile, for the next two months, fair Venus urges you to travel for pleasure. You’ll enjoy art exhibits, museums, curious encounters and charming places because your appreciation of beauty is heightened. If you can’t travel then be a tourist in your own city. Explore! Meet new and interesting people who can broaden your world! Some of you will spark a romance with someone “different.” Hola!

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a productive week. You’re keen to work hard. This positive energy extends to your personal world and your health as well. (Oh yes, you want it all. “I’m almost perfect!”) One bit of news that will please you is that fair Venus enters one of your Money Houses this week to stay until the end of March. What does this mean? It means that you will easily attract money, gifts, goodies and favours from others. Obviously, this also means it’s the perfect time to ask for a mortgage or loan. In many ways, practical and financial support will be forthcoming, perhaps through a partner. Meanwhile sex will be hot and physical intimacy will be affectionate.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a lovely time because vacations, fun activities with kids, sports events and anything to do with the entertainment world and the hospitality industry are giving you opportunities for pleasure and enjoyment. (And who loves a good table at a great restaurant more than you?) Actually, things will get even better because this week on Tuesday, fair Venus moves opposite your sign where it will stay until the end of March improving and enhancing all your closest relationships. You will more easily express your affection to others. Professional partnerships will be cozier and mutually beneficial. In fact, even your enemies might warm to you.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Home, family and your private life are your main focus. Family discussions are important. Home repairs might be taking place. Travel delays and confusion with medical and legal matters will diminish by the end of the month. (That’s encouraging.) Meanwhile, this week fair Venus moves into your House of Employment and Health to stay until the end of March. This will benefit your job and your ability to enjoy warm relations with coworkers, superiors and employees. Your health will feel invigorated. A work-related romance might flourish. It’s an excellent time to discuss agreements with others and acknowledge your duties and obligations in a relationship.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is a busy, fast-paced time because of short trips, errands, appointments and increased reading, writing and studying. Plus, you’re spending more time with relatives, siblings and neighbours. Fortunately, on Tuesday, fair Venus will enter the part of your chart that relates to vacations, romance, exciting outings, playful times with kids, the entertainment world, the arts, sports — all that fun stuff. Venus will stay there until the end of March attracting opportunities in all these exciting, areas for you Flirtations and new love will percolate. Accept all invitations to party. Enjoy good times. Relax. There is no need to pretend to be what you are not.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Currently, you want greater control of your life through your possessions and the things you value. This is the perfect time to examine your relationship to your stuff. Do you own it or does it own you? Sometimes we are a slave or a victim to our possessions, maintaining them, guarding them and worrying about their possible loss. You might also have excellent moneymaking ideas at this time. Meanwhile, this week Venus moves into the part of your chart that relates to home and family, which means you will enjoy quiet times at home. Relations with parents and family members will improve. Redecorating will appeal. You might entertain to show off what you’ve done. (Clever me.)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is a powerful time because the Sun is in your sign. This happens for only four weeks once a year (signalling your birthday). The Sun in your sign will energize you, boost your confidence and make you project yourself with more dazzle. The Sun will also attract people and favourable situations to you. This week Venus moves into your House of Communications, perfectly supporting the energy of the Sun by boosting your social life with friends and neighbours. You’ll be happy to socialize and talk to others. Your everyday world will become more pleasant, and you will appreciate the beauty of your everyday surroundings. It’s the perfect time for a short drive to enjoy the wonders around you.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Because the Sun won’t enter your sign until February 18, it is hiding in your chart, which is why you feel you are waiting in the wings until you’re ready to step out centre stage to greet your world. Use this time for contemplation, and a chance to observe childhood behavior patterns that are no longer useful. As your personal year is coming to an end — how do you want your new year to be different? Ideas? Meanwhile this week Venus moves into your Money House, which will attract money and wealth to you and favour financial transactions. You will be more tempted to buy beautiful clothes, jewelry and art objects to beautify your home as well as spending money to entertain yourself. Ah yes, the good life.

Moon Phase for Sunday Feb 2nd, 2025

The current moon phase for today is the Waxing Crescent phase.

On this day, the moon is 3.9 days old and 19.01% illuminated with a tilt of 107.155°. The approximate distance from Earth to the moon is 367,510.41 km and the moon sign is Aries.

The Moon phase for today is a Waxing Crescent phase. This is the phase where the moon started to become visible again after the New Moon.

In this part of the moon cycle, the Moon is moving away from the Sun and is becoming more and more illuminated by sunlight. In this phase, the moon will go from 0.1% to 49.9% illuminated before reaching the First Quarter phase.

In the Waxing Crescent phase the moon rises before noon in the east, transits the meridian before sunset, before setting in the west before midnight.

The Waxing Crescent phase, like all moon phases, will last for just over 7 days. The actual length will vary because of the elliptical shaped orbit of the moon. The moon is close to the Sun in the sky and the right edge will become brighter as it approaches 50% illumination and the First Quarter phase

Fun fact: although only a small part of the Moon is illuminated in the Waxing Crescent phase, you can still sometimes see the rest of moon as faintly visible. This is known as “earthshine” or Da Vinci glow and is a result of sunlight being reflected off the Earth and back to the Moon.

Gardening Moon Calendar – February 2025 Gardening by the Moon Phase, Farmer’s Planting Guide

Please read this first:

1) Moon Phase x Moon Zodiac Sign:

Please keep in mind, that Gardening by Moon Phase and Gardening by Moon Zodiac Sign are two different/independent biodynamic systems and they might give you different or contradictiory gardening recommendations.

  • a) Each Moon Phase (except Full Moon and New Moon) lasts about 1 week
  • b) Each Moon Zodiac Sign lasts about 2.5 days

Try to experiment with these two systems to find which recommendations suits you the most.

2) Tropical (Astrological) x Sidereal (Astronomical) Zodiac:
(1-2 days difference in Leaf, Fruit, Root and Flower days)

There are two different zodiacs for determining the Moon Sign:

  • a) Tropical zodiac (Astrological) is based on the seasons – Vernal Equinox is fixed as 0° Aries (The 1st Fruit day)
  • b) Sidereal zodiac (Astronomical) takes into account Precession of Equinoxes and shifts 0° Aries back by cca 1-2 days. Maria Thun who was an authority on biodynamics was using this Sidereal zodiac

Try to experiment also with these two zodiac systems to find which system suits you better.

February 2025 Moon Details

The Full Moon for this month will occur in the second week on Wednesday, February 12th. The New Moon will happen later in February on Friday, February 28th.

February’s Full Moon

As the snowiest month in the United States, February’s full moon is commonly known as the Full Snow Moon in Native American cultures. These ancient tribes named this moon after the way trees cracked in the cold, or how people had to sit shoulder to shoulder around the fire for warmth. Even the Celts called it the Moon of Ice. As expected of the coldest month in the year, the Full Snow Moon is also known by more sinister names, such as the Bone Moon.

The Cherokee tribe called February’s full moon the Bone Moon because by this point, the tribe’s winter food supplies had usually dwindled to the point where people had to gnaw on bones and cook bone marrow soup in order to survive. For the same reason, the Kalapuya tribe called this moon the Out of Food Moon. Appropriately, it’s also known as the Hunger Moon and the Little Famine Moon. Perhaps due to this month’s association with death, the Cherokee tribe would commune with their dead ancestors during the Bone Moon. A didanawiskawi, or a medicine person, would host a medicine dance for the community. Fasting and rituals for the dead were also common practices.

However, not all cultures associate February’s full moon with extreme cold and death. The Hopi tribe calls it the Moon of Purification and Renewal, which is very fitting because the Full Snow Moon is usually the very first full moon of the year according to the lunar calendar. Cultures that follow the lunar calendar, especially East Asian cultures, tend to associate the Full Snow Moon with new beginnings for this very reason. The ancient Chinese, for example, called it the Budding Moon.

As a matter of fact, celebrations of February’s full moon are the climax of Lunar New Year festivities in various East Asian countries. In China, the Full Snow Moon is celebrated during the Lantern Festival, also known as the Yuanxiao Festival, which is the 15th day of the Lunar New Year. During this festival, the Chinese release kongming lanterns into the sky as they admire the full moon and eat tangyuan, glutinous rice balls that are usually filled with sweet paste. The round shape of the balls symbolize family togetherness and bring good luck to the whole family.

Many East Asian cultures in general also light lanterns and bonfires to celebrate February’s full moon. According to an ancient Chinese legend, not long after Buddhism was brought into China, 17 deities were witnessed flying through the sky during the first full moon of the Lunar New Year. Shocked and excited, the populace lit fires and lanterns to see the godly beings better. They continued to do so year after year, but for more practical reasons – to chase away pests and to pray for a good crop in the upcoming spring.

In Korea, where February’s full moon is known as Daeboreum, these fiery structures are called “Houses of the Burning Moon”. During Daeboreum, Koreans hike mountains despite the freezing temperatures in order to catch a glimpse of the first rise of the first full moon of the Lunar New Year. According to legend, the very first person to accomplish this feat will have their dearest wish come true.

In Celebration of Lammas – Using Crystals for Abundance

by Spiralotus

Abundance is the connection to the source of all that is; manifesting a constant flow to support, nourish and expand life as well as creativity. In Chinese Feng Shui the wealth corner is the corner farthest away and to the far left of the front door or the southeast corner, depending on what system you use. If you like to use this system you can set up crystals to attract various forms of abundance there.

Some crystals that are associated with abundance are usually green, yellow, gold or orange. However there are other stones that do not have those colors and work just as well. Yellow Sapphire is associated with Ganesh, Hindu god of prosperity. This stone attracts wealth to the home. An Abundance Crystal is a Quartz crystal with one long part and many tiny crystals at the base to encourage dreams, well-being, and love. Tiger’s Eye helps people with material things and assists by showing the best way to do something. It stimulates wealth and helps create stability to maintain wealth. Citrine should be placed in your wealth corner to attract abundance. Carnelian improves motivation and getting out of a rut. Peridot brings wealth quickly and is best for someone who already has things under control. Topaz helps you appreciate life and makes room for abundance. It taps into your own natural resources and because its facets carry both negative as well as positive charges, it helps manifest desires.

When you decide on a crystal to use cleanse it first by running it under water, charging it in the sun or moon, putting it in a pyramid, or if you are a Reiki practitioner, simply Reiki your crystal. Some people put their crystals in sea salt. This is a great way to cleanse them, just make sure the crystal that you are working with will not be damaged by the salt. Always throw away your salt when you are done.

You can program your crystal to attract a specific form of abundance by holding it in your hands and picturing what you want to manifest in your life. Make sure you keep your area for your crystal clean and charged. Periodically smudging the area will help you with this. In your abundance area you may wish to include something that represents Deity to you and perhaps the type of abundance you want to bring into your life. Being as specific as possible helps to create the energy you wish to attract. As your wealth increases in material, spiritual, and emotional areas be sure to give thanks for what has manifested in your life.

The Witches Guide to Lammas

A guide to the Sabbat’s symbolism

by Arwynn MacFeylynnd

Date: August 1 or 2.

Alternative names: Lughnassadh, Lammastide, August Eve, Harvest Home, Ceresalia (Roman, in honor of the grain goddess Ceres), First Fruits, Festival of Green Corn (Native American), Feast of Cardenas, Cornucopia (Strega), Thingtide and Elembiuos. Lammas, an Anglo-Saxon word, means “loaf mass.” Lughnassadh is named for the Irish sun god Lugh (pronounced Loo), and variant spellings are Lughnasadh, Lughnasad, Lughnassad, Lughnasa and Lunasa.

Primary meanings: This festival has two aspects. First, it is one of the Celtic fire festivals, honoring the Celtic culture-bringer Lugh (Lleu to the Welsh, Lugus to the Gauls). In Ireland, races and games were held in his name and that of his mother, Tailtiu (these may have been funeral games). Second, the holiday is the Saxon Feast of Bread, at which the first of the grain harvest is consumed in ritual loaves. These aspects are not too dissimilar, as the shamanic death and transformation of Lleu can be compared to that of the Barley God, known from the folksong “John Barleycorn.”

Lammas celebrates the first of three harvest celebrations in the Craft. It marks the beginning of autumn, the start of the harvest cycle, and relies on the early crops of ripening grain and any fruits and vegetables ready to be harvested. It is associated with bread because grain is one of the first crops harvested. Those in the Craft often give thanks and honor now to gods and goddesses of the harvest, as well as those who represent death and resurrection.

Symbols: All grains, especially corn and wheat, corn dollies, sun wheels, bread, harvesting and threshing tools and the harvest full moon. Altar decorations might include corn dollies or kirn babies (corncob dolls) to symbolize the Mother Goddess of the Harvest. Other appropriate decorations include summer flowers and grains. You might also wish to have a loaf of whole cracked wheat or multigrain bread upon the altar, baked in the shape of the sun.

Colors: Red, orange, gold, yellow, citrine, green, grey and light brown.

Gemstones: Yellow diamonds, aventurine, sardonyx, peridot and citrine.

Herbs: Acacia flowers, aloes, chamomile, cornstalks, cyclamen, fenugreek, frankincense, heather, hollyhock, myrtle, oak leaves, passionflower, rose, rose hips, rosemary, sandalwood, sunflowers and wheat.

Gods and goddesses: Lugh, Thor, John Barleycorn (the personification of malt liquor), Demeter, Danu, Ceres, sun gods, corn mothers, all grain and agriculture deities, mother goddesses and father gods.

Customs and myths: Spellwork for prosperity, abundance and good fortune are especially appropriate now, as well as spells for connectedness, career, health and financial gain. Sacrifice is often associated with this holiday. Visits to fields, orchards, lakes and wells are also traditional. It is considered taboo not to share your food with others now.

Activities appropriate for this time of the year are baking bread, wheat weaving and making corn dollies or other god and goddess symbols. You may want to string Indian corn on black thread to make a necklace, or bake cornbread sticks shaped like little ears of corn for your Sabbat cakes. The corn dolly may be used both as a fertility amulet and as an altar centerpiece.

Some pagans bake Lammas bread in the form of a god-figure or sun wheel — if you do this, be sure to use this bread in your Lammas ritual’s cakes and ale ceremony, if you have one. During the Lammas ritual, some consume bread or something from the first harvest. Some gather first fruits; others symbolically throw pieces of bread into a fire.
