A Little Humor for Your Day – Magician and the Pesky Parrot

Magician and the Pesky Parrot

A magician worked on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audience would be different each week, so the magician did the same tricks each week. However, there was a problem, the captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick.

Once he understood, he started shouting out the secrets in the middle of the show, “Look, it’s not the same hat.” “Look, he is hiding the flowers under the table.” “Hey, why are all the cards the Ace of Spades?” The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything, it was, after all, the captain’s parrot.

One day, the ship had an accident and sank. The magician found himself with the parrot, adrift on a piece of wood, in the middle of the ocean. They stared at each other with hatred, but did not utter a word. This went on for a day, then another, and another.

Finally, after a week, the parrot said, “Okay, I give up. Where the heck is the boat?”

Daily Fun Quiz – “What Your Car Says About You?”

What Your Car Says About You

By Brie Cadman, DivineCaroline

Young men drive Camaros, soccer moms drive minivans, and rich snobs  drive Bentleys. We usually associate a certain type of car with a certain type  of person, but do we really know who’s behind the wheel? After all, our  perception of a car is largely based on how it was marketed—Volvos for safety,  Porsches for speed. But it can be tough to decipher whether people buy a car  because they think it will make them out to be something they are or may not be,  or because the same group of people always buy the same type of car. That’s  because psychographics—grouping customers according to beliefs and attitudes and  selling them products to fit their group—is at play.

So what does your car say about you? What is that SUV driver really supposed  to be like? Here’s a clue.

Small Car: Prius, Honda Civic, Smart Car According to a  study by researchers at UC Davis,  small car drivers are more  pro-environmental and prefer higher density neighborhoods than drivers of others  types of cars. This isn’t surprising; if you live in a big city, it’s simply  easier to park with a small car and if you’re concerned about the environment,  you’ll want something that’s more fuel-efficient. Small car drivers, unlike  other categories of drivers, don’t necessarily see their cars as a ticket to  freedom. They aren’t workaholics or status seekers who try to display wealth.  They want to lessen their impact on the earth and have a  reliable car—and find a parking spot.

Mid-Sized Car: Chevrolet Sedan The authors of the study  found that “mid-sized car drivers have no distinct travel attitude, personality,  lifestyle, mobility, or travel-liking characteristics.” Ouch! Does that mean  they’re totally boring? Maybe, or maybe just pragmatic, or maybe they got their  cars as a hand-me-down. The owners were more likely to be female and homemakers;  they also had higher incomes.

If you’re driving an American-made sedan, you might belong to the group  psychographers call “belongers.” That’s those who need to belong to a group, are  very nationalistic, and don’t like change. The stereotype of this person is  someone who lives in an average town in the Midwest. When not driving a sedan,  they may also be in a U.S.-made pickup or station wagon.

Luxury Cars: Cadillac, Lexus Those who drive luxury cars  are—no surprise—status seekers; they also are more apt to drive long distances.  Men and older or retired people are more likely to drive luxury cars. In  particular, luxury car drivers are over-represented among highly-educated and  higher-income people.

In psychographic lingo, the “achievers”—profit-oriented workaholics who like  being independent—are also likely to drive luxury cars and/or sports cars.

Sports Cars: BMW, Porsches Those who are adventure seekers (even if they never get out of the car) drive sports cars. They’re not calm and are more likely than average to have a college degree. Surprisingly, based on the cost of most sports cars, they were more likely to have lower incomes. Some of these may fall into the category of “emulator”—younger, financially unstable, low self-esteem people who buy flashy cars that aren’t true sports or luxury cars to try to emulate achievers.

Minivan/Van In the study, minivan drivers tended to be calm and weren’t loners. (Who would buy such a big car just for themselves?) They enjoyed traveling in their car; they were more likely to live in the suburbs, be females, homemakers, and aged forty-one to sixty-four, and surprise surprise, have children.

Pickup In the study, pickup drivers don’t like high-density living situations and are more likely to be dissatisfied with their lives. They tend to be workaholics, have lower education, be full-time employees, have service related jobs, and be middle-income.

SUV It’s not surprising that people who favored larger cars were less environmentally-minded. SUV drivers, in particular, also liked to travel short distances in their cars. They were more likely to be suburbanites, aged forty or younger. The drivers came from larger households that were more likely to have children.

Not only might the type of car you drive say something about you, so does the  color. According to a survey done in Great Britain, certain colors indicate  certain personalities. Here are some generalities:

  • Black: aggressive personality, rebel
  • Silver: cool, calm, may be a loner
  • Green: reactive
  • Yellow: idealistic
  • Blue: introspective, reflective, and cautious
  • Red: someone who is full of energy and pizzazz
  • White: status seekers, gregarious
  • Cream: contained and controlled

Whether we choose cars for how we want others to perceive us, or if we are  simply concerned with price and function, what we drive can send some serious  messages.

Calendar of the Sun

Media Autumnus

Color: Brown
Element: Earth
Altar: Set out a brown cloth, an earthenware jug of water, dried stalks of yarrow in a vase, and incense of many woods. In front of the altar set a great empty barrel, an earthen pot of soil, another of the day’s vegetation garbage, a smaller one of wood ashes, and a basket of gathered dried leaves.
Offerings: Bits of hair or fingernail parings.
Daily Meal: Vegetarian.

Media Autumnus Invocation

Let us invest in the Earth
Beneath our feet
And see our returns in millenniums.
Let us say that our main crop
Is the ancient forest
Which we did not plant
And will not live to harvest.
Let us say that the leaves
Are harvested when
They have rotted into the mold.
Let us call that our profit,
And prophesy such returns.
Let us put our faith in the two inches
Of humus that will build
Under the trees every thousand years.
Let us listen to carrion.
Let us put our ears close and hear
The faint chatterings
Of the songs that are yet to come.

Chant:
Clay receives you
Earth has chosen you
Worms prepare you
Earth encloses you

(During the chant, several who have been chosen to do the work of the ritual come forward and add the garbage, the ashes, the soil, the dried leaves, the yarrow, and finally the water to the compost barrel. It is removed again to the corner until Spring.)

‘THINK on THESE THINGS’ for November 8th

‘THINK on THESE THINGS’
By Joyce Sequichie Hifler

Sensibility is said to be neither good nor evil in itself, but in its application. Sometimes we just “out-sensible” ourselves. In the course of years, we come to see the pattern of the truly sensible. What have we at this moment that really means anything? Does it give us happiness? Did it once seem most impractical? Was it worth fighting for?

The intellectual strives for knowledge and in his absorption leaves the world but hardly leaves a vacancy. The materialistic must have everything at the price of peace, and their possessions decay but never their chaotic souls. And the insecure forfeit the most minute comforts to save for that rainy day. Happiness would have been greater and far more lasting if the fund has been smaller and used as an opportunity fund.

The fine line of sensibility can be most elusive, but it seems to be more clearly seen when we relax and quit shoving to get there. If the place we desire is meant for us, it will come when we learn the way isn’t always sharp and direct and by demand.

Fall Feng Shui Tips

Fall Feng Shui Tips

Find balance in your life with the changing seasons

Stephanie Dempsey   Stephanie Dempsey on the topics of insight, feng shui, fall
The fall season beckons us to slow down and enjoy the fruits of our labor. The days are getting shorter and the nights longer, prompting everyone to strike a better balance between their public and private lives. If you feel like one aspect of your life is consuming too much time and attention, this is an opportune time to make some Feng Shui adjustments to your home. Here are a few suggestions that can help you find time for friends and family while keeping busy with work.
Flower power
Nothing says autumn like the burnished colors of chrysanthemums, marigolds and nasturtiums. Display pots of these flowers wherever you tend to feel stressed or overburdened. Glimpsing their russet, gold and orange hues will be like rubbing soothing salve over sunburned skin.
Dim the lights
Change bright light bulbs for ones with lower wattage. It is easier to be active in summer because there is increased sunlight. Now that autumn is here, you need to bring things down a notch. Soft lighting will help you slow down and enjoy simpler pleasures, like a solitary cup of tea in the morning or soothing music in the evening.
Go with the flow
Adding a fountain to your favorite room in the house will help you make an easy transition from work to home. The sound of flowing water can quiet nagging doubts and fears that plague you during working hours.
Streamline your social life
If you feel like your social life is depleting your energy, update your address book. If it’s hopelessly cluttered, invest in an attractive new one. The act of entering people’s contact information into the new address book will make you more aware of the friends you truly treasure, versus the people you merely tolerate.
Get moving
If you’re having a hard time downshifting into autumn, reposition 27 items in your home. Why 27? Nine is considered the number of longevity in Feng Shui, and multiplying it by three, the number of growth, will invite a continuous string of auspicious changes into your life.
Stay focused
Do you have a hard time putting work aside, even after you come home? Hang a shelf bracket in the far left corner of your bedroom, and then place a beautiful vase or sculpture on it. This will help you lift your thoughts to a higher plane.
Picture this
Sometimes a desire to get ahead at work can cause you to neglect the people and things you love most. Displaying a recent photo of your loved ones on the far right corner of your desk can help you to strike a better balance between work and home.
Create boundaries
If you have no choice but to keep a desk in your bedroom, create a barrier between your sleep and work stations. Suspend a flowing curtain so that you can’t see your desk when you’re lying in bed. Alternately, you can shield the desk with some lush plants.
Soften up
Your bathroom represents your ability to nurture yourself. Make this space more inviting with soft lighting, fluffy towels and a tactile rug. Add soaps, candles and lotions that are pleasing to your sense of smell. A radio tuned to a relaxing music station can also transform your bathroom from a utilitarian space to a mini-spa.
Give thanks
The best way to enjoy the fruits of your labor is to pause and acknowledge them. Make a list of 27 things for which you are grateful, and then place this list in a red envelope. Put the envelope under your mattress and keep it there until the Winter Solstice. The energizing power of your list will suffuse you with peace and contentment, allowing you to enjoy autumn’s blessings to the very fullest.

Dragon Oath of Service

Dragon Oath of Service

As a follower of the Draconic Tradition, I pledge the following in the names of my Gods and to may dragon friends. May they bear witness to this, my solemn Oath:

I vow I will use the teachings and rituals of the Draconic Tradition only to bring honor to my Gods, provide for the betterment and safeguarding of myself and my Clan, or work to preserve balance and harmony.

I will do whatever I can to bring knowledge of and respect for dragons back to the world, even if I must do so in subtle and quiet ways. For I know well that beneficial energy and works need no fanfare to be effective.

In all things I will strive to do no harm lest it be in the defense of the helpless, the innocent, my family, my Clan or my person.

Should I ever knowingly and willfully forsake this Oath, may my Gods turn their faces from me; May my dragon allies depart from me and never return unless I can find away to redeem my shame and reclaim my honor.

While You Are Waiting On Us To Get Our Act Together, Check this out!

It has been one of those mornings. I have been trying to get some business done and looked at the clock and freaked. We will be here in just a moment. What I have been aiming to do and while I am think about it, I might as well ask. Do you have a website that is posted on our Links/Awards Page? If so, I want to know if any of you listed there have a banner. Why? Because I want to start a scrolling banner marquee. It will feature everyone’s banner scrolling happily along on the front page. I am sure you have seen them and know what I am talking about. But I would like to give it a try, plus it is free advertisement for your site.

I figure by doing this I am helping out the Pagan community. We are a large and fast growing Pagan site. But one site can’t get out our message the way it should be. I want more bigger and prosperous sites. I want our community to become big and strong like it once was. Giving me your banner to put on the front page of this site, I guarantee you will get visitors. The more members or followers that each of our sites attract, the stronger we grow.

You know what the WOTC’s mission is: To bring our Religion back to the mainstream. Please give me your banner or point me in the direction of it. If an individual doesn’t find what he likes on this site, he has other options. Right now, it looks like we are it. I know that is not true. There are gorgeous Pagan blogs and Facebook pages that just haven’t been found yet. This is the perfect way for our community to come together and grow and become strong. With the Goddess behind us, we will be unstoppable.

If you would like to become a part of this, please drop me a link or your site addy in the comment section. Or you can email me at thewotcstrustfund@yahoo.com.

Thank so much for your help.

*A Quick Revision* You site doesn’t have to be on the Links Page to have your banner posted in the marquee.  So we are looking for all Pagan sites right now!

I hate to post and run but…….

I hate to post and run but…….I have got to take a friend to the dentist. After or before, probably before, I am going to vote. I don’t know what is on your ballot today. But one thing I promised you and I am worse than an elephant about forgetting. My promise to you was when Election time rolled around, I was going to remind you of what a lovely mess our government was back in October. Remember? I know you know what I am implying. Vote with your head. Stop to think about what a mess things were. Remember people not knowing where their next meal was coming from or how to keep a roof over their kids head. Whatever you do get out and vote and please vote with your head.

Now I have one thing to ask you. I am currently brain dead (I know it’s a first for me, lol!). But anyway, what kind of items would like to see raffled off? I know the holidays are getting ready to hit us. I thought it would be nice to put up something that you might to want to give as a gift. If you tell me that is what you would like to do, I will cut the December raffle short. That way whatever the item is will get to you in time for Yule or Christmas.

Anyway, I have got to run for now. Have a beautiful Tuesday!

Daily Motivator for Nov. 4th – Too valuable to waste

Too valuable to waste

Consider what a truly great day you have today. Think of all the magnificent  possibilities that are yours right now.

You can fill the next hour with sixty minutes of focused, purposeful,  effective effort. You can bring new and meaningful value to your work, your  home, your family, your community and your dreams.

On this day you can learn, experience, work, feel, love and play. You can  make creative use of whatever you have to move in the direction of whatever you  desire.

The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. So let yourself  imagine something wonderful, and then enjoy the wonderful experience of making  it happen.

Though it might seem easier and more comfortable to just do nothing, that’s  really not the case. If you waste the great possibilities of this day, you will  very soon come to regret it.

So avoid that regret and jump into action. Today is much too valuable to  waste.

Daily OM for Nov. 4th – Learned Self-reliance

Learned Self-reliance

The Negative Effects of Spoiling Children

by Madisyn Taylor

When children are spoiled we do them a great disservice because they are not being allowed to earn and learn.

Parents are moved by instinct to love, nurture, and provide for their offspring. Because our children are so much a part of us, we want to see them blissfully happy. Also, our own desire to be liked, materialist pressures, and a fervent wish that our c

hildren have everything we lacked as youngsters can prompt us to spoil them. However, while it might seem that buying your child expensive gifts will give them fond memories of childhood or that you can heal your emotional wounds by doting on your sons and daughters, you may be unconsciously interfering with your children’s evolutional development. One of the most precious gifts you can grant your children is the true independence they gain when they learn to earn what they covet and become stewards of their own happiness. Try allowing your children to experience life to the fullest. Let them work and earn what they want. When the time comes for them to go to college and enter the workforce, you will have the confidence that you have raised a child that can both enter and contribute to society confidently.

When children are not afforded the opportunity to explore self-reliance, to understand that with possession comes price, and to fulfill their own needs, they develop a sense of entitlement that blinds them to the necessity of hard work and the needs of others. We may spoil children because giving them gifts is pleasurable. Or we may want to avoid conflict out of fear that our children won’t love us. Yet children who are given acceptance, love, and affection in abundance are often kinder, more charitable, and more responsible than those whose parents accede to their every material demand. They develop a strong sense of self that stretches beyond possessions and the approval of their peers, and as adults they understand that each individual is responsible for building the life they desire. If you find yourself giving in to your child’s every whim, ask yourself why. You may discover that you are trying to answer for what you feel is lacking in your own life.

Rearing your children to respect the value of money and self-sufficiency as they grow from infants to young adults is a challenging but rewarding process. It can be difficult to watch a child struggle to meet a personal goal yet wonderful to be by their side as they achieve it. Your choice not to spoil your children will bless you with more opportunities to show them understanding and compassion and to be fully present with them as they journey toward adulthood.

The Heart of Unconditional Love

The Heart of Unconditional Love

From the laughter of children at play to the golden rays of the sun
beaming through the sky at sunset, the eternal song of love permeates
all creation. Each beat of our heart pulses to this rhythm in a majestic
and graceful dance connecting us to everyone and everything. Life is
magnificent when we quiet our outer selves and become fully present and
aware of our own loving essence.

To know this grander love is to go beyond the sensation of a first kiss
or a mother’s tender touch in time of need. Although these
extraordinary expressions reveal the existence of love, there is so much
more. This universal love is unconditional and its very presence ignites
our passion and our compassion. It breathes life into our being and
sustains us. It encourages and illuminates the infinite possibilities
while simultaneously providing all that we require to be alive.

It is our heart center that gently nudges us to know and express love in
all that we are. However this does not always come easily. Through eons
of time, the conditioning by our mind to seek logic and reasoning in our
daily affairs has left little trust in the wisdom of the heart. Learning
to once again cultivate our intuition, be intimate with our own unique
understanding of love, and to feel this love deeply, takes both courage
and strength.

Unconditional love is our consistent source of nurturing, inspiration
and potential. Interestingly, we often seek the beauty of nature for its
extraordinary ability to be in constant change while ever expressing its
interconnected uniqueness. This is what captivates and also reminds us
of our own innate capacity to do the same. Nature has the ability to
cycle, recycle, adapt, reclaim and reinvent itself over and over by
simply fulfilling its distinctive purpose with love for all.

When we allow unconditional love to be our personal guiding intention,
our energy flows in the same manner. We stay present in the moment and
share our love without reservation or hesitation. We change, evolve,
expand and express our creativity in new ways ensuring that it benefits
the whole. In this way, life itself evolves through each of us.

You are the heart of unconditional love. What you choose, we all
experience.

Invocation to Saga

We hail you, Keeper of the Records of the Past!
Lady of Sokkvabek, the Hall of Books
Where the stream of Knowledge passes
Under the dangling feet of those who sit
Sharing words and ale on your porch.
Daughter of Valkyrie and Dwarven Emperor,
You chose instead of war
To live a life of peace, surrounded by the words,
The histories, the lays, the information
That you love, and love to pass on.
Lady who loves all libraries,
Teach us to honor all spaces where knowledge
Is hoarded like treasure, and like treasure
Given out to the hungry and the needy,
As your sacred temples, your rivers of gold.
Tell us the stories if those who have gone before us,
And give us the gems new-discovered
From the world around us
And from the worlds within others.
Hail, Lady who shares her ale with all
Who love to share knowledge as much as yourself,
May your hands guide our searches
As we sift through the dust of the past
For gems to inspire our yearning hearts.

(One who has been chosen to do the work of the ritual recanes the books thoroughly with the burning mugwort sticks, and says, “Hail Saga!” All reply “Hail Saga!” and come forward to take the books from the altar. The rest of the day up until Hesperis will be spent reading, save for those necessary tasks which must be done, and for those workers one will be chosen to read to them as they work.)

The Daily Cosmic Calnedar for November 3

If you are having a difficult time seeing the start of November as positive, join the club. Friday’s fireworks, followed by Saturday’s lunar transit into Scorpio along with the heightening potency of the dark of the moon cycle, can leave many souls bewildered. However, several celestial alignments attempt a rescue mission as the Sun makes a physically and emotionally vitalizing, 60-degree tie with the red planet Mars (1:49AM PDT) — the last main aspect happening with daylight time in effect.  Once standard time is restored (in most locations across America and world-wide), today’s rescue mission continues as the Moon in Scorpio trines Chiron in Pisces (1:26AM PST and arriving with a boost for healing interests) while practical efforts lead to progress on the business front — courtesy of a Mercury-Saturn parallel (3:16AM and similar to a union in the zodiac).  The big event — the New Moon at 12 degrees of Scorpio (4:51AM) — is also a hybrid Total-Annular Solar Eclipse at 4:48AM. The area of the world influenced is primarily the Eastern zones of North and South America, the Atlantic Ocean, Southern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. One fortunate facet to any New Moon is that it tends to propel humanity forward rather than backward as it represents the seed-point for the coming solar-lunar dance in the zodiac over the next 29.5-days — until the next New Moon (in Sagittarius) takes hold on December 2. Therefore, utilize the hours after the New Moon/Total-Annular Solar Eclipse to take several giant steps forward in your main fields of expertise.  Productivity — especially in the arts — can rise as the largest asteroid Ceres enters affable, airy Libra (6:16AM) — a cycle that lasts until February 3. Be a keen logician and careful analyst when it comes to focusing on important business plans as the Moon makes its monthly union with Saturn (9:19AM).  A 15+ hour void lunar cycle starts during a mind-expanding Moon-Jupiter trine in water signs (8:24PM). This lunar twilight zone lasts until 12:15PM tomorrow when the Moon enters fiery Sagittarius. The big chill can enter affairs of the heart — on a temporary basis overnight — as Venus forms a frictional, 45-degree tie with Saturn (11:32PM). [Note to readers: All times are calculated for Pacific Standard Time — starting at 2AM on the West Coast of the USA and Canada. Be sure to adjust all times according to your own local time so the alignments noted above will be exact for your location.]
