Spell for Today – A Midsummer Night’s Fire Ritual

smile

A Midsummer Night’s Fire Ritual

The Summer Solstice, known to some as Litha, Midsummer, or Alban Heruin, is the longest day of the year. It’s the time when the sun is most powerful, and new life has begun to grow within the earth. After today, the nights will once more begin to grow longer, and the sun will move further away in the sky.

If your tradition requires you to cast a circle, consecrate a space, or call the quarters, now is the time to do so.

This ritual is a great one to perform outside, so if you have the opportunity to do this without scaring the neighbors, take advantage of it.
Begin this ritual by preparing the wood for a fire, without lighting it yet. While the ideal situation would have you setting a huge bonfire alight, realistically not everyone can do that. If you’re limited, use a table top brazier or fire-safe pot, and light your fire there instead.
Say either to yourself or out loud:

Today, to celebrate Midsummer, I honor the Earth itself. I am surrounded by tall trees. There is a clear sky above me and cool dirt beneath me, and I am connected to all three. I light this fire as the Ancients did so long ago.

At this point, start your fire. Say:

The Wheel of the Year has turned once more
The light has grown for six long months
Until today.
Today is Litha, called Alban Heruin by my ancestors.
A time for celebration.
Tomorrow the light will begin to fade

As the Wheel of the Year
Turns on and ever on.
Turn to the East, and say:
From the east comes the wind,
Cool and clear.
It brings new seeds to the garden
Bees to the pollen
And birds to the trees.
Turn to Face South, and say:
The sun rises high in the summer sky
And lights our way even into the night
Today the sun casts three rays
The light of fire upon the land, the sea, and the heavens
Turn to face West, saying:
From the west, the mist rolls in
Bringing rain and fog
The life-giving water without which
We would cease to be.
Finally, turn to the North, and say:
Beneath my feet is the Earth,
Soil dark and fertile
The womb in which life begins
And will later die, then return anew.

Build up the fire even more, so that you have a good strong blaze going.

If you wish to make an offering to the gods, now is the time to do it. For this sample, we’re including the use of a triple goddess in the invocation, but this is where you should substitute the names of the deities of your personal tradition.

Say:

Alban Heruin is a time of rededication
To the gods. The triple goddess watches over me.
She is known by many names.
She is the Morrighan, Brighid, and Cerridwen.
She is the washer at the ford,
She is the guardian of the hearth,
She is the one who stirs the cauldron of inspiration.
I give honor to You, O mighty ones,
By all your names, known and unknown.
Bless me with Your wisdom
And give life and abundance to me
As the sun gives life and abundance to the Earth.
I make this offering to you
To show my allegiance
To show my honor
To show my dedication
To You.

Cast your offering into fire. Conclude the ritual by saying:

Today, at Litha, I celebrate the life
And love of the gods
And of the Earth and Sun.

Take a few moments to reflect upon what you have offered, and what the gifts of the gods mean to you. When you are ready, if you have cast a circle, dismantle it or dismiss the quarters at this time. Allow your fire to go out on its own.

All Signs

This week two planetary events occur: On Tuesday, the Sun moves into Cancer to stay for four weeks. Cancer is warm hearted, nurturing and thrifty; hence, these qualities will blossom more in all of us. We’ll focus more on home, family, gardening, cooking and boating, especially activity around marinas. (The Sun is a clue to where we put our energy.) On Wednesday, Venus moves into Gemini, to stay for almost 4 weeks. Venus will attract different opportunities to each of us. Venus is a social planet. It represents romantic relationships, the arts and all things beautiful. It also has a strong association with money. Let’s welcome this change. (Incidentally, this is my step ladder. I never knew my real ladder.)

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Your attention now turns to home, family and your private life. Many will be involved more than usual with a parent. Because of this, some of you will cocoon at home more and relax among familiar surroundings. However, countering this energy, your ruler Mars is still in your sign, along with lucky Jupiter, and this means you want to be physically active! The shift of Venus will increase this influence by attracting interactions with siblings, relatives and neighbours. Note: Something will make you happier on a daily basis. In fact, you will appreciate the beauty of your everyday surroundings more than you realized before. (A blessing!)

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

The pace of your days will accelerate in the next four weeks, because you’ll be running with an outboard motor strapped to your butt. Errands, appointments, short trips and visits with siblings, relatives and neighbours! You’re eager to enlighten others. You want to tell someone what you think about something. If you can squeeze in a little vacation – this is a great idea. Meanwhile, your ruler Venus, a planet that attracts things to you (especially money) is moving into one of your Money Houses! Hello? Things don’t get much better than this! This means you might get richer in the next four weeks. It also means you will spend money on beautiful things. Ka-ching!

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

In the next four weeks, you will reflect upon your values. You want to know, “What really matters?” You don’t want to be 90 years old, looking in the mirror saying, “I blew it.” You want greater control of your world through what you own. Meanwhile, the lovely news is that this week fair Venus moves into your sign to stay for the next four weeks. (Yay!) This makes you want to reach out to others. It also makes you charming and diplomatic. You will seek peace and want to patch up problems with others. Good times with friends will be a priority. This is a great time for a vacation! It’s also a wonderful time to buy wardrobe goodies for yourself. Enjoy your good fortune!

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This week, the Sun moves into your sign to stay for four weeks giving you a chance to recharge your batteries for the rest of year. It’s your turn to replenish and restore yourself. You will also (almost magically) attract important people and favourable situations to you. Ah yes, this is the power of the Sun! Actually, this is an empowering birthday month for you because this year, lucky Jupiter is at the top of your chart. (Happens only once in 12 years.) Jupiter makes you look successful! This is the classic time for a promotion or public recognition by your peers. Meanwhile, with Venus hiding in your chart, secret love affairs might flower. Oh my.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Your personal year is ending but your new year will not begin until the Sun enters Leo, a month from now. Therefore, the next four weeks are a time of limbo for you. (You’re waiting at the train station for your ship to come in.) Nevertheless, you can use this time to make plans for your new year ahead. What do you want to achieve in the next year? What three things come to mind? Set some goals because this will give you a clearer focus on what is important you. Goals also give you more clarity in decision-making. Plus, they give you a sense of purpose. Venus is now moving into your House of Friendships, which means you will schmooze more with others, especially artistic, creative people. (Remember – write down some goals.)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You will be more popular in the next four weeks. You will seek out friends, plus, you will also become more involved in groups, clubs and organizations. (It’s just what’s happening.) Your idealism will be aroused, which is why you might seek out charitable organizations or ways to help those who are less fortunate. Admirable! (Whenever we’re more aware of the suffering of others, we become more compassionate.) Fair Venus will now be at the top of your chart, which is good for business and attracting people who can help you. Romance with a boss might begin. Almost certainly, someone will ask for your advice about how to make something look better. (“First, remove the yellow crime tape.”)

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Ta da! Once a year the Sun sits at the top of your chart for four weeks and that time has arrived. Symbolically, this means the Sun is shining down on you and capturing you in a spotlight that is flattering. This is why everyone will admire you and see you as super capable (even if you don’t do anything special). Good lighting is everything! Since this almost magical phenomena is occurring for the next four weeks, it means now is the perfect window of time for you to make your pitch or go after what you want because you look so good in the eyes of everyone. Meanwhile, Venus makes you want to travel for pleasure. It might also create a romantic relationship with someone “different.” (Exciting!)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Decide to act on your urge to do something different because you need a change! Einstein said, “I must be willing to give up what I am in order to become what I will be.” Sometimes you need to give up the familiarity of your velvet rut to explore more of the world. This includes intellectual exploration, which is why many of you will choose to study or take courses instead of jetting off to new places. Fair Venus has just moved into one of your Money Houses, which means the financial or practical help you need or an inheritance might come to you! (Where there’s a will, there’s a way.) Romantic relations will be very affectionate and sexy!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Venus is opposite your sign for the next four weeks, which symbolizes that this is a lovely time for all relationships – love affairs, marriages, partnerships and professional relations with coworkers. Venus will even improve relations with your enemies! What a blessing! Certainly, you can use the next four weeks to patch up difficult relationships and misunderstandings. Meanwhile, in this same window of time, you will have more involvement with financial matters and shared property. This includes taxes, debt and inheritances. You will also feel emotionally passionate in the coming month, and at times, even compulsive. (Just so you know.)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

It’s been six months since your birthday, which means certain things in your life are culminating. Be smart, respectful and courteous when dealing with authority figures. (You’ll be glad you did.) Oh yes, don’t burn bridges. Some situations might not work out right now. Remember: Your first loss is your cheapest loss. Let it go. What is working needs to be incorporated in your life so that you move forward with growth and progress. Venus will promote warmer relations with coworkers. It will also boost your health. However, watch out for seconds on dessert because Venus loves sweets! (Yum, yum.) A work-related romance will begin for some. Smoochie boochies!

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Grab that toolbox or briefcase because you’re keen to work in the next four weeks. You’re setting the bar high and you want to be productive! You want to make every action count. (Admirable.) Basically, you want to manage your life well. One quirky detail is you might have to work on behalf of others, which means you might not be your own boss. Nevertheless, you will derive satisfaction from a job well done. Fear not. Venus will bring you rewards because Venus will be travelling through the most fun part of your chart in the next four weeks attracting creative activities, social outings, vacations, sports events, romance and fun times with kids. Yeehaw!

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Great news! The next four weeks will be full of social outings, fun vacations, romantic diversions, sports events and enjoyable activities with kids. Yes, it’s your turn to play! Not only do you want to play and socialize with others, at a deeper level, you want to express the real you, especially your creative talents. You want the freedom to be who you are. Expect relationships to be more lighthearted and fun-loving! Romance in particular will sizzle! Many of you will also enjoy redecorating projects and doing something to make your home more attractive. You will want to entertain at home as well. Invite family over for good food and drink because the vibes are warm and loving.

A Laugh for Today

As a witch many of us get label as a black sheep or an outcast in our families. But you what? It only matters what you think of yourself and the spiritual path that is right for you.

Have a super Sunday!

A Thought for Today

Moon Alert

Avoid shopping or important decisions from 2:30 PM to 7:15 PM EDT today (11:30 AM to 4:15 PM PDT). After that, the Moon moves from Aquarius into Pisces.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Today is a tough day. Relations with older friends or people in authority will be strained or difficult. You might chafe because someone tries to boss you around or take over. (Don’t they know you’re the general?) Be patient because this too, shall pass.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This is a poor day to ask for permission or approval from a boss or a parent because relations with others in general are difficult; but specifically, they are testy with people in authority. Yes, timing is everything. (And yes, the more things change, the more they stay insane.)

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

You are in a strong position now because both the Sun and your ruler Mercury are in your sign. Nevertheless, this is a poor day to argue or discuss controversial issues like politics, religion and racial matters because these discussions will quickly become power struggles. Oy.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This is a poor day (for many reasons) for important decisions about banking, mortgages, contracts or anything to do with shared property. This also applies to shared responsibilities. Bide your time and wait until next week to seal the deal. Meanwhile, tread water.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Relations with others are not smooth today. People are paranoid. They’re inclined to play sly, passive aggressive games. (You need this like a fish needs a bicycle.) Nevertheless, it’s possible that someone in a position of influence will help you today. Be receptive to offers that come your way.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Power plays and difficult dealings with coworkers are likely today. You might have squabbles about a pet or something related to your health? The point is that people are not straightforward today. They are distrustful. Cope as best you can. (Trust everyone and always lock your door.)

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Children might be an increased responsibility for some reason today. Likewise, social plans might be more of an onerous obligation than an enjoyable escape. (“You gotta do what you gotta do.”) Be straightforward with your kids. Be honest with romantic partners. No power plays.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This is a poor day to seek the cooperation of a parent, boss or someone in a position of power because these dealings will not flow smoothly. Someone will raise objections or create obstacles for you. Knowing this ahead of time, table any decisions or requests you have until next week.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Basically, you are an optimist. In fact, outdoor activity and optimism are survival issues for you. Today however, you might fall into worry mode. Remember the saying: “Worry is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but gets you nowhere.”

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Romantic relations might be on the rocks today. Beware of jealousy, accusations or mistrust. Power struggles are also possible. Since you know this is the tenor of this day, tread carefully and be patient with everyone. Take the high road.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Today the Moon is in your sign lined up with stern Saturn, which is always a fleeting, depressing influence. (“Why me, oh Lord?”) Domestic problems might occur. Meanwhile, you feel cut off from your emotions. This is temporary. Tomorrow is a better day!

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Be patient with others, especially siblings, relatives and neighbours, because it’s easy for things to go south in a New York minute. (People are touchy!) They are quick to put a negative spin on things or mistrust you. Easy does it.

If Your Birthday Is Today

Actor Richard Madden (1986) shares your birthday today. You are a straightforward, honest person. You are also an interesting combination of being careful and cautious, and yet, at the same time, being willing to take a risk. Good news: This is a creative, fun-loving year for you! Your zest for life is strong because it’s your turn to have some fun. (Enjoy yourself but remember your goals.)

Spell for Today – Protection

The theme of the day is protection. Here is a spell for you to try to keep you feeling safe & sound at all times.

If you are the sort of person who really wants or needs a fast crystal protection spell that is no muss, no fuss, then try out this Saturday witchery while working with your black tourmaline. Hold the black tourmaline jewelry piece or the raw chunks of stone in your hands. Visualize what it is that you want them to do. Then repeat the following spell verse three times:

Lovely tourmaline crystal so chunky and black

Reflect all negativity right out and back

While I am inside of this magickal boundary

I am protected from any psychic vampirey

By the element of earth, keep me free from the mire

May this crystal spell grant the outcome I desire.

Now go ahead and work with the black tourmaline. I bet that you will notice a huge difference.

The Gamma Cygni Nebula

Image Credit & CopyrightMin Xie, Chen Wu, Yizhou Zhang, and Benchu Tang

Explanation: Supergiant star Gamma Cygni is at the center of the Northern Cross. Near the plane of our Milky Way galaxy, that famous asterism flies high in northern summer night skies in the constellation Cygnus the Swan. Known by the proper name Sadr, Gamma Cygni also lies just below center in this telescopic skyscape, with colors mapped from both broadband and narrowband image data. The field of view spans about 3 degrees (six Full Moons) on the sky and includes emission nebula IC 1318 and open star cluster NGC 6910. Filling the upper part of the frame and shaped like two glowing cosmic wings divided by a long dark dust lane, IC 1318’s popular name is understandably the Butterfly Nebula. Right of Gamma Cygni, are the young, still tightly grouped stars of NGC 6910. The distance to Gamma Cygni is around 560 parsecs or 1,800 light-years. Estimates for IC 1318 and NGC 6910 range from 2,000 to 5,000 light-years.
