Ancient Greeks practiced wind scrying in the sacred grove of Dodona, which was dedicated to Zeus. Paellas referred to this technique writing as “there is a mode of predicting by means of the air and the leaves of the trees

The method seemed to involve the hanging of striking wands from branches of sacred oak tress in a way that they struck resounding brass basins when the wind blew. Interpretations were made of these sounds and that of the wind. The wind gives itself naturally to scrying because it talks the same as you or me. Find a quite place in the bush where there is no noise of cars, music, etc. A place among the trees is the best. Find a tree and sit under it.

Casually focus your attention on the wind, blocking out all other thoughts. In time the wind will talk to you.

In order for you to scy the wind, you must, for a time, become the wind.

Egyptian dream scrying may be traced back thousands of years. The method used by the Egyptians was recorded in the Greek magical papyri which were written between 200 B.C. to 500 A.D.

In preparing to use the Egyptian dream scrying method you must not speak to anyone on the evening you plan to scy. You should remain in silence after the setting of the sun.

Do not consume alcohol on that day or engage in sex. You must refrain from consuming food for up to four hours before the scrying.

After having a warm bath you anoint your temples with olive oil. You will need an oil lamp which must not be coloured red or bear any inscription.

Write on a short narrow strip of white linen with ink mixed with myrrh the name of the dream God and the purpose for the dream scrying. Twist the linen strip into a wick and insert into the oil of the lamp.

Place the lamp on a table beside your bed. Using the ink draw the image of the dream God upon your left palm.

You must decide which God or Goddess you wish to use. Thoth was well used with the Egyptians.

Light your lamp. Kneel before the lamp.

Concentrating on the image on your left hand recite the following invocation :

“Thoth I invoke, blessed power of dreams divine, Angel of future fates, swift wings are thine, Great source of oracles to human kind, When stealing soft, and whispering to the mind, Through sleep’s sweet silence and the gloom of night, Thy power awake the sight, To silent souls the will of heaven relates, And silently reveals their future fates.”

You need to concentrate on your question you wish to know the answer to. Around your left hand wrap a piece of black linen about four inches wide and about thirty inches long.

The black cloth is called “black” of Isis. Blow out the flame of the lamp.

Now go to bed, clear your mind and go to sleep. Have a tape recorder beside your bed so that when you awaken you may record your dreams while still fresh in your mind.

You will find that the dream will come to you in a voice that is clear and powerful rather than in dream images. Sometimes the message is sent in cryptic form so take your time in working out the answer.

The great Egyptian Goddess Isis (who was also known as Aset the Bright) was honored on August 12 thousands of years ago by means of a festival of lights called the Aset Webenut, or, in Greek, the Lychnapsia. The Lychnapsia commemorated Isis’s frantic search for the body of her husband Osiris, whom their brother Set had murdered and cast into the Nile, as she roamed the earth holding aloft a flaming torch in an attempt to see in the pitch darkness. Thus torchlight lit up the night as devotees re-enacted her search and a boat bearing her likeness was paraded through the streets.

Lampadomancy, also called Lychnomancy, it is form of divination using a single oil lamp or a torch flame. As with Lychnoscopy, the diviner reads presages from the movements of the flame.

An alternate method is also practiced, consisting of of reading the spots of carbon deposited on paper sheets held over the flame.

On yet another method, the diviner uses the lamp as a means of “attracting spirits to the flames”, in the hope of consulting them regarding future events. In this method, usually a specially designed lamp is employed, on the belief that grotesque forms will attract the spirits.

Lampadomancy was a popular method of divination in ancient Egypt, where diviners would perform it at midday in a darkened room illuminated by a single lamp filled with oasis oil.

The history of oil scrying can be traced back to ancient Babylonian times. Some of their magic books have survived down through the centuries with details of the methods they used.

From the Babylonians oil scrying found its way to the Egyptians and Hebrews. The most detailed examples of oil scrying are written in the Greek Magical Papyri written in Egypt between 200 B.C. and A.D. 500.

One of their techniques was called the “Princess of the Thumb” wherein a scryer annointed the forehead and thumbnail of a subject. The shiny nail acted as a magic mirror in which the scryer saw images, thought of as spirits on the other side linked to the person.

With the “Princess of the Hand” technique, oil was mixed with black soot to make a black paste that was then smeared upon the hand. The scryer then used the hand as a mirror in an attempt to scry future events.

A third type of oil scrying was called the “Princess of the Cup”. Sesame seed oil was used to coat the inside of a cup that was rested on its side. The cup was used as a concave ‘magic mirror’ to capture and magnify the light of a candle that was fixed on its inner rim.

Sometimes oil and water mix. In oil scrying we find:

  • To call upon the services of the heavenly Gods mix oil with rain water
  • To invoke terrestrial Gods use sea water
  • To invoke Osiris use river water
  • To call upon the souls of the dead use spring water

As the spirit of orderliness and legislation, she assists us by overseeing any legal matters, hearings, promises, and oaths to ensure harmony and honesty. In some Egyptian stories, a person’s soul was weighed against Maat’s feather to gain entrance to paradise.

To Do Today:

On June 19 in 1865, the slaves in Texas were finally told about the Emancipation Proclamation signed three years previously. While freedom was slow in coming, it finally arrived, likely in part thanks to Maat’s encouragement.

For all of Maat’s spells it’s best to have a feather to use as a component and focal point. Change the color of your feather to suit the goal. Pick blue for true seeing (or to encourage honesty with yourself), white for pure promises, black and white for legal equity, and pale yellow to inspire a new beginning filled with Maat’s keen insight. Deity of the Day for September 15th – HORUS

HORUS

The falcon-headed god. A complex deity with many aspects. Some of them are: Horus the Elder, a sky god whose eyes are the sun and the moon, continually at war with Set, the god of evil; Horus of the Horizon, symbolized by the rising and setting sun; Horus the Child, whose frequent depictions as a baby at the breast of his mother Isis influenced Christian images of the Madonna and the Christ child; Horus, son of Isis, avenger of Osiris. There were many others.

Deity of the Day for August 21: MAVET

MAVET 

God of Death and Sterility.  His name means Death.  A son of El.
After Baal defeated Yam, he then sent a message to Mavet demanding that he keep his domain in the underworld where he belonged.  Mavet was enraged by this and sent a threatening message to Baal, who was afraid and attempted to flatter his
way out of it.  This, however, was to no avail and Baal was forced to face Mavet.  Mavet defeated him and held him in the underworld until Anath tracked him (Mavet) down and defeated him herself.  Mavet did not actually die, as he and Baal had to face off once more seven years later.  Neither defeated the
other, but Mavet did give in (at the command of Shapash) and proclaimed Baal the King of the Gods.

Deity of the Day for August 16th is Seth

 

SETH

This is the brother of Osiris who destroyed him and dismembered his body in order to take his throne. He is the Dark Serpent aspect of the God. God of drought and storm, Lord of the Red Land (the desert). In Sanscrit the word “sat” means to destroy by hewing into pieces. In the myth of Osiris…it was Seth who killed Osiris and cut his body into fourteen pieces. But it may be significant that the word “set” is also defined as “queen” or “princess” in Egyptian. Au Set, known as Isis by the Greeks, is defined as “exceeding queen”. In the myth of the combat Seth tries to mate sexually with Horus; this is usually interpreted as being an insult. But the most primitive identity of the figure Seth, who is also closely related to the serpent of darkness known as Zet, and often refered to by classical Greek writers as Typhon, the serpent of the goddess Gaia, may once have been female, or in some way symbolic of the Goddess religion, perhaps related to the Goddess Ua Zit, “Great Serpent”, the cobra Goddess of Neolithic times. Lastly, there is a theory that is pure speculation on Seth’s battle with Horus. First, we look at Horus as a Solar Deity. Then, we look at Isis as being the Full Moon (as she is the Goddess of Magick). Next, if we consider that Seth was originally female, then it is easy (or just convenient) to assign him/her to the new moon. Put these together, and the story of Seth attempting to mate with Horus, and then taking his eye, may very well be a story of a solar eclipse.

Atum was bisexual and was sometimes called “the great He-She.” The Egyptians had two cosmogonies, one taught by the priests at Heliopolis and the other by the priests at Memphis. The priests at Memphis taught that Nun and Atum, together with Atum’s children Shu and Tefnut, were aspects or forms of Ptah.
