What Is Yule and How Does It Differ from Christmas?

Let’s face it, by the time November rolls around, we’re all rooting for the return of light. And, there’s a celebration for just this thing. It’s called Yule.

What is Yule? Yule is the pagan holiday that celebrates the return of longer days. Many cultures — from ancient Germanic peoples to Celtic Druids — celebrated Yule. This turning of the wheel of the year also has traditions that may seem familiar to those who celebrate Christmas today.

What is Yule?

Yule is the time to celebrate the rebirth of the light after the very darkest part of the year. In neopagan traditions, Yule (also known as Jól) is when the god, who sacrificed himself at Samhain, has journeyed through the underworld and, in the embrace of the goddess, becomes the child of light.

Yule or the winter solstice is also the stage of the Wheel of the Year when the god transforms from the Oak King into the Holly King. He’ll shift back to the Oak King at the summer solstice.

The time between Samhain and Yule is one of purging what does not serve you and reflecting on the upcoming year with fresh eyes and hope for new beginnings.

Yule is the moment where the energy of the new year rises up. It is a wonderful time to look within and set intentions for the following year.

All Signs

You might feel you’re making slow progress while issues from the past keep popping up. This is because five planets are retrograde: Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune. Mercury is retrograde until December 15. This is why you’re misplacing items, cancelling appointments and reservations or having car problems. Granted, it’s easier to finish old business. (That’s a bonus.) But, now hear this: This week Mars goes retrograde until Feb. 23; and this will really slow things down! People will feel frustrated and impatient. But it will “reveal” secrets from the past. Of course, past issues are often tricky to think about. For example, if you lend someone $50 and you never see that person again…. it was probably worth it.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

You have a strong desire to travel; however, duties and responsibilities might make this impossible. But hey, you can do something! Basically, you want to experience more of life. You want a change of scenery. You want adventure and stimulation! If you can’t travel, seek out other ways to satisfy this urge. Take a course. Explore a new hobby. Study something new. Be a tourist in your own city. Many of you are also dealing with some kind of a replay with your kids. (“This again?”) The upside is that perhaps tackling whatever arises again is an opportunity to deal with it in a better manner. Like having a second chance. Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Financial issues about shared property, taxes, debt, inheritances and insurance matters can be dealt with and wrapped up quickly. Meanwhile, plans for renovations or changes at home are going slow and meeting with obstacles. An old family drama might be resurrected because some kind of discovery is “revealed.” On the upside, your appreciation for the arts and beauty is heightened. You might be able to travel for pleasure. Some of you might explore a new romance with someone “different.” Whatever happens, keep an eye on your bank accounts and assets because something unusual could catch you off guard.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

It might be tough to accomplish things lately. (Your life is two steps forward and one step backwards.) Meanwhile, close relationships are tense. About December’s Cold Full Moon

December full moon is commonly known in the Northern Hemisphere as the Full Long Nights Moon. It takes its name from the winter solstice, which has the longest night in the year. The Full Long Nights Moon cuts a soaring trajectory through the wintery skies, in direct opposition to the low-hanging sun. According to Pagan tradition, on years that the Full Moon falls before the winter solstice, it is referred to as the Mourning Moon. Given that it coincides with holidays like Yule, Pagans consider this the perfect time to open up your home and provide warmth to those you love, as well as to those who are most vulnerable to the cold of winter.

For those who are more inclined towards solitude, the Full Long Nights Moon provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy your cosy home in peace and quiet. Consider taking lots of restful naps under warm, fluffy comforters, or allowing yourself to lounge in bed in the mornings instead of rising immediately to work. Appropriately, the Native American Zuni tribe called December’s full moon the “Moon Where the Sun Comes Home to Rest”.
