The Witches Digest for Monday, October 16th

(Part 3, Horoscopes & Divination)

When You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going

How outer planet transits are shaking up your life

Outer planets Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are heavy hitters. These guys mean business, and when they transit a personal planet (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) or angle in your chart by close degree, you can count on upsets in your world.

Right now, if you’re a Mutable sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) then you’re the winner of a Neptune in Pisces and Saturn in Sagittarius transit. And if you’re a Cardinal sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn), you have the simultaneous transit of Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn.

When I consult with my clients, or even look around the lives of my own family members, I see the fascinating difference that each type of outer planetary transit has in their world. The common theme is change through developmental tension, ultimately leading to personal growth. For each outer planet that transits something vital in your horoscope, it can feel like you’re going through the muck. I’m reminded of the famous Winston Churchill quote these days more than ever:

“When you’re going through hell, keep going.”

Easier said than done, right? And yet, we humans are a resilient bunch. We can take so much pressure from the outside world — and even from our own creation — and not only manage to survive, but thrive.

Even hell has an end

What resonates most about this quote as I apply it to astrological cycles is the reminder that even hell has an ending. Eventually, you’ll get out and come to the other side of pain. Eventually, you’ll see the light again. Yet the only way to ensure that is to keep going through the darkness.

While it’s true that every outer planetary transit to your horoscope has the commonality of morphing your world through a series of stressful circumstances, it’s important to note that each outer planet has a very different style, or modus operandi, with which he accomplishes this.

I thought it might be helpful to briefly clarify the differences so that when you or someone you know experiences a transit, you’ll have an idea of how the specific outer planet goes about achieving his mission.

What Saturn transits can teach

Saturn transits change through restrictive, limiting and sometimes overbearing circumstances. Saturn is also discipline, responsibility and authority. There are many different ways in which this can happen. Let’s say you’re having a Saturn transit to your 10th House of Career. This angle of the chart is concerned with your status in life, your professional goals and ambitions, and authority figures in your world.

When Saturn comes to this point in your horoscope (and we all get this transit about once every 29 years) it can either be an incredible career pinnacle, where you’re recognized as the authority in your industry, or it can be a time of drudgery, where, in the eyes of the boss, your best is never good enough.

The positive end of this transit uses the most illuminative qualities of Saturn to help you master your goals. The shadow is felt as roadblock after roadblock as you work ferociously to get your name out there. Either way Saturn crystalizes what he touches. That’s how he teaches.

Uranus can shake you awake

What if Uranus was transiting the same angle in your chart? Uranus is the great awakener of the zodiac. He presents radical change in our life in the most sudden, unexpected way. When transiting Uranus crosses your 10th house you can expect sudden opportunity in career or a sudden change in status (going from married to divorced or divorced to married are examples).

This is also a time of waking up to what liberates you in terms of your life direction and following it. Uranus teaches by destabilizing what it touches, forcing us to accommodate to these shifts and get in touch with our brilliance.

Neptune transits point to gain through loss

How about good old Neptune? Neptune dissolves what it touches. When you have a Neptune transit, something — or someone — tends to slip through your fingers. This can also be a time of tremendous idealism because of the extraordinary spiritual component of Neptune.

A transit of Neptune to your 10th house can result in a major ego loss professionally or personally. There might be a scandal involving you that obliterates your reputation if you have been going down an unsavory path. Alternatively, this might be a time you decide to follow your imaginative career goals and pursue that opportunity in music, film, photography or the healing arts.

What will disappear during this transit is your attachment to the status in life you held before Neptune arrived. Neptune transits teach us by softening us up enough to allow illumination in.

Surrendering to planet Pluto

And then there’s Pluto. This planet, more than any other, likes it in hell. He is, after all, the God of the underworld. When you’re having a Pluto transit you know it because the pain you endure can be brutal. Pluto teaches through elimination. He kills off what you no longer need — what is actually impeding you from soul growth.

The more you fight Pluto on this, the harder your transit will be. Do yourself a favor and when Pluto comes calling, prepare to surrender. You’re only job during a Pluto transit is to accept the transformation. Even if it hurts. Especially when it hurts.
Pluto is the planet of power, and if he happens to transit your 10th house you can either arrive at an incredible position of power (sometimes notoriety) professionally, or you can fall from a position of power if you’ve been abusing your clout.

Either way, Pluto teaches you that with great power comes great responsibility and if you’re not using it for the greater good, when he transits your 10th house he’s going to rip it right away.

So, are you going through hell right now? Join the club. My advice? Keep it moving.

Your Weekly Love Horoscopes for October 16th

Sarah Bartlett, Astrologer

From the Astrology Room

With Jupiter now in intense Scorpio for the next twelve months or so, secrets will come out, deeper feelings will be revealed and there will be eyebrows raised and passions aroused.

But for this week, make the most of the sun’s last fling in Libra to make it clear that you require and need a little lightness and frivolity in your life too.

If you’re not in a position of equality with someone, then you’ll do you’re utmost to get there. You radiate well-being, and intuitively know how to deal with anything from supporting your partner, to the right moment to create romance in your world. Indulge a little in your own power-trip this week, it’s you’re right.

It’s easy to get stuck in some kind of time warp about love and feelings. But to experience being loved, you must give out, not hold back. You must engage not defend, begin not end, take each cycle of giving and receiving as itself. And if attached, this week, the planets will take you to new frontiers and a deeper commitment.

Restless thoughts occur. And if you’ve promised the earth to someone special recently, perhaps it would be wise to think whether you can live up to those vows? I’m not saying you’re incapable of commitment, but taking the open road to freedom may be more tempting than domestic routine right now.

This week navigate your life with vision and self-awareness, and whether you’ve decided to become an enterprising dragon or simply remain a loyal partner who honours their career, the time has come to love the one you’re with, yes, but love yourself too.

Bravely remind your partner that you have a voice, an opinion and personal goals. And if they say, ‘ I think you ‘ought’ to do this or that, then perhaps it would be worth reminding them that shoulds and oughts aren’t any longer in your vocabulary. By the end of the week, you discover emotional equilibrium again.

You’ve been going about your daily business of sharing and caring. If single, you’ve been happy being independent, favouring no one friend more than the other. But you have forgotten one person in all this, and that’s you. Remembering yourself is the best souvenir you could take home right now.

With the sun generating a desire in you to get on with life, it’s hardly surprising you’re going to be in your element. But how to live the dream when you’re surrounded by life’s daily worries?  ‘Oh, just take each day as it comes,’ says a friend. But not you, you want romantic action, so go out and get it now.

It’s a hit and miss, on and off kind of week. But by the end of it, you remember that romantic dreams and mature relationships aren’t mutually exclusive. Time to try out passion with the one you love.  And if single? You learn that being passionate about yourself means someone new will love you too.

This week, observe how you react to your partner or admirers in both positive and negative ways. What are your love goals? What price giving up on your personal quest for someone else’s? This week is a great time for rekindling the flames of romance. But careful, don’t get too carried away by your fun-loving nature.

Why do you feel so passionate about someone that you can’t even be bothered to tidy your home? Or, maybe you’re horrified by your partner’s future plans when you thought that wanted to live the dream?  So, how to deal with this? Quite honestly, there’s nothing more you can do than indulge in you. Pamper yourself, get sensual and go with the flo

There’s a sense of a bright, brilliant future ahead. So make it a week for romantic adventure if single, and fulfilling all those travel plans if attached.  Worries about commitment or future instability are temporarily shelved, and you can sit back and enjoy the fun-side of life. Go and enjoy.

Time to accept that you must honestly express your own needs, and also what you want for the future. With Neptune’s positive influence, now’s the time to make magic. So wave your romantic wand, and hey presto, start to live out those love visions, instead of just thinking about them.

Your Weekly Horoscopes for October 16th

Claire Petulengro, Astrologer

From the Astrology Room

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

If you can’t say anything good about anyone this week, then don’t say anything at all. I know you sometimes take things too far but that can be good as well as bad. Use this week to push your boundaries in a positive way. You can start by pushing for what you really want in your career, instead of just making do.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

Don’t be angry about the things which haven’t worked out in your life this year. Work on and focus on what has and can succeed. You may not realise it but the very person you have been trying to convince to be on your side has already switched to your allegiance. You were talking so much you just didn’t see.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Jealousy rears its head for your sign and you may find yourself accusing your close ones of things they have not done. Know how far is too far to go when throwing around accusations. If you’re not careful you could undo all of the good work this month has seen you do so far. A new work connection comes via a social contact you make at the weekend.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

Financial matters come to a head and you have to make some important decisions about what is a priority in your life. Don’t take advice from others. Try to find the right answers by yourself, instead of listening to the guidance that those who are not in the loop may offer to you. Doing your sums before and not after Friday can make something which was not possible a reality.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

One of the greatest gifts you can give someone is the gift of attention. You may not realise it, but you have been neglecting the very faces you care about. Try to make a mental note of what your priorities should be. The written word is worth getting a second opinion on. Fellow Leos provide fun times if you’re willing to let out your softer side.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

Don’t be afraid of growing slowly Virgo. The only thing you should be afraid of is standing still. Your element of earth needs to take things slowly to build the base which you crave for longevity. Old talents come in handy as do old contacts. Don’t be afraid to contact those you used to have a business or even personal connection with.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

Big news and huge celebrations are evident in your stars. You have come so far my friend. I hope you are as proud of your progress as I am. Trips you make in the name of family pays dividends. You finally start to see with ease what and who needs to be a priority. Game playing in love this weekend is not an option.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

Try not to tell tales on those you work with as it will only come back on you if you do. Working hard this week is the key to you getting through what I see was a difficult beginning to the month. Don’t be afraid to ask if you do not know all the answers. It’s what will gain you the respect I know you seek.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

Friendship isn’t a big thing, it’s a million little things. You find this out over the course of the next few days and it actually leads to you feeling like a more contented person. Cancelled travel plans are for a very valid reason so try not to be upset, but work on making better plans in their place.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice. Remember this Capricorn, especially where travel or business matters are concerned. Something you were about to give up on is given a boost by someone who was once on the opposing side. Going over figures more than once can help make sure you don’t run into silly mistakes

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

Please try not to rush things in your life this week Aquarius. This is a time when attention to detail will mean everything. Animals seem to link to an introduction which makes you smile. Go the extra mile for family you have not seen for a while. They will not forget the effort you make for them at this time.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

What starts off as a friendship could lead to so much more by the time this week is over. You are no longer playing games in life but you are acting and speaking from the heart. This new attitude really suits you Pisces and should be responsible for the many positive changes this month will bring. Selling and buying also go well for you this week. Don’t be afraid to hold out for the real deal.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Monday, October 16th

The first half of the day is strong for improvements to relationships or pairing up to accomplish something productive, dear Aries. You’re likely to feel good or accomplished regarding a commitment to someone or a project. Positive gestures and actions taken now have a real impact on your future. It’s a good time to take on tasks that you might put off on another day as you have a strong sense of responsibility now. As the day advances, there can be some restlessness if you feel hemmed in. Seek out ways to improve your projects and methods and avoid strict schedules if possible, as you need breathing room to feel inspired. It’s not the best time for work or routine matters to run smoothly, but you’re certainly ready to put in the effort.

Work or health matters stand to gain or improve in the first half of the day, Taurus. Stable, steady energy is with you for getting important things done, and you can find yourself pleasantly absorbed in whatever you’re doing now. It feels good to commit to something now. You might draw upon the talents or resources of someone else to accomplish something significant. Work and health benefits from long-term strategy rather than quick fixes and this becomes obvious to you now. Draw up plans for improving your daily routines, and feel better for it! Feeling on top of the little things in your life can do great things for your confidence and outlook. The second half of the day is a little more restless. It may be that friends and lovers aren’t mixing well or that fears of having the rug pulled out from under you are interfering with the enjoyment of the moment. Try not to allow fear of change or surprise get in the way of your good mood.

You are in a playful cycle these days, dear Gemini, as you seek out improved ways to express and enjoy yourself. However, in the first half of the day, you want to make tangible progress and make things work. If you stand to gain from it, you’re happy to settle into a routine or work hard towards a goal now. At the moment, you want to take care of matters that secure you in the long term rather than pursue instant gratification. You are happy to commit yourself to a task or even a person for some of you. The second half of the day can find you a little restless as your desire for comfort and familiarity is at odds with a need to connect or experiment. Uncertainty or unreliability in your social life may leave you feeling not as grounded or secure as you’d like. Even so, you’re likely to sense a coming together or mutual understanding is in the works with someone important to you.

You’re in a great position to work on or from home in the first half of the day, dear Cancer, as the Sun in your home and family sector connects well with responsible Saturn in your sector of work and routine. It can be a good time for working at improving home life, family, or work, whether this entails working harder at finding peace with those closest to you, or making physical, tangible improvements to your environment. You take pride in the functionality of these areas of life right now. It’s a fine time to attend to practical details, rearrange, organize, and sort things out. The goal should be long-term satisfaction rather than quick fixes now. Later today, there can be a tendency for uncertainty about your long-term goals or general direction to interfere with your current projects and state of mind. However, in the coming days, good energy is with you for seeing the bigger picture and reaching some satisfying conclusions.

Good energy for practical matters continues in the first half of today, Leo. A positive conversation or helpful news might figure strongly now. This is a good time for improving a relationship with sincere communications or simply being there for someone. You’re giving good advice or making a verbal commitment. This can be a good time for making clarifications or definitions in a relationship. Long-term goals are in focus, and you enjoy putting effort towards attaining them now. Doing the responsible thing feels good today. Focus on organizing, sorting, strengthening, and building something in your life now. Later today, there can be tension as part of you needs to unwind, relax, or focus on building something you already have, while another part is tempted to branch out and see what else is out there for you. Both needs are valid, but staying in a state of indecision isn’t your favorite place to be.

Good practical energy continues in the first half of the day, dear Virgo, and activities that remind you of the simple pleasures in life or that keep you grounded are favored. Moderate, measured actions make sense today. This is a time for finding ways to strengthen or stabilize your life in key ways, particularly when it comes to your valuables which may need some maintenance, your finances, or your home. This can also be a good time for investing in things that improve your feeling of security. It can be satisfying to be responsible today! The Moon in your sign all day can pull up emotional needs that want to grab your attention. The second half of the day may play into the impulsivity of this transit, which is best avoided now, however.

In the first half of the day, efforts to strengthen or stabilize key areas of your life continue to be favored, dear Libra. This is a time for good advice, practical news, and mature conversations. It’s also a good time for studies, learning beneficial and handy things, and enjoying small accomplishments that nudge you closer to your goals. Later today, you may not feel ready or up to the task related to what someone proposes. Sometimes inaction is just as frustrating as adverse action, and this may cause some problems now. Even so, this is a time for respecting your boundaries and getting in touch with what you want before pushing forward, so give yourself emotional space and time.

There continues to be excellent common sense with you today, dear Scorpio, although as the day advances, restlessness can be a problem. This morning, getting time to yourself can be particularly helpful and grounding as you get in better touch with your needs. You prefer to work on worthwhile pursuits today as you’re looking for solid results. You’ll do particularly well pouring your energies into business or practical endeavors that will improve and strengthen you. You’re also in a good position to resolve a long-term problem from your past or to tie up loose ends. Later today, it can be difficult to fully relax and enjoy friendships or personal interests with some uncertainty about work or health on your brain.

Continuing until midday, you are likely to see the value of slowing down and pacing yourself, dear Sagittarius. A Sun-Saturn connection favors efforts to stabilize, strengthen, commit, build, and maintain. For you, this is particularly the case with long-term projects, business income, friendships, group connections, and personal plans or health programs. Friends or groups can be supportive, and the practical or productive side of your relationships is in focus. This is a good time for gaining clout or respect with associates and networks or friends. As the day advances, energy shifts and there can be some mismatch between your desire to advance your goals and your need for entertainment. Or, for some of you, uncertainties in your personal life interfere with your concentration temporarily.

We continue to value realism and practicality in the first half of today, dear Capricorn, and this is right up your alley! It’s a good time to make decisions and to take steps towards meeting your goals or strengthening your position. Business endeavors are especially favored, and work that you did in the past or behind the scenes can come in handy now. This is a time for applying your inner wisdom and experience to your work and feeling particularly proud of yourself and your accomplishments or gaining recognition. Later today, you’re in the mood to connect with others, but uncertainties or inconsistencies related to home or family life can distract you.

The practical and focused energy of last night continues today, dear Aquarius, and you’re in a great position to advance a personal interest, study, or goal now. In fact, you can feel quite good about putting in extra effort or filling a responsibility now. With increased foresight, you’re in the right place for making decisions and assessments. Your sense of what’s possible is strong and serves you well. Friendships are favorable and supportive, particularly the practical side of your connections. Teaming up can be successful and productive now. Later today, distractions can interfere with your desire to go deep in a particular subject or endeavor. However, you’re moving towards an excellent time for discovering ideas and news that gives you great insight or relief.

There continues to be excellent common sense and foresight with you in the first half of the day, dear Pisces. You can feel pleasantly ambitious now, and you may thoroughly enjoy focusing on or attending to the details of your work or plans. For some, this is an excellent time for consulting or cooperating with a boss, parent, teacher, or manager. You can feel happily devoted to an endeavor, and you might readily pick up the support of others if needed. While there is a practical theme to the day, as it advances there can be some restlessness stirred with others if you’re not entirely on the same page with them. For some, topics of money or resources and respect can be hot ones. Try to observe and avoid quick reactions to problems now.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Tuesday, October 17th

Mercury moves into your solar eighth house today and will influence this area of your chart until November 5th, dear Aries. During this transit, your attention turns to the hidden elements of life. You are picking up a lot more from your environment than usual, and seeing motives, subtleties, and power dynamics in your relationships and within yourself. There can be less impetus to share your ideas with others, with the possible exception of a trusted friend or partner with whom conversations can be frequent, during this cycle. You’re not as patient with conversation, information, or learning that feels frivolous or superficial. Today is influenced by a Mercury-Jupiter alignment that can open your mind to something you weren’t ready to see in the past or to a new opportunity. There can be excitement on mental levels. This is a fabulous time for investigation and research or invigorating communications. Talking about your feelings or confidential matters can be a sweet release, and you might learn something important in the process. For some, this can be a time for coming to a satisfying agreement or deal involving money or support.

Jupiter recently entered your partnership sector for a stay of over a year, and today, Mercury moves into the same sector, dear Taurus. It’s for a shorter stay (until November 5th), but it’s great for generating ideas and plans for partnering up. This Mercury transit brings a stronger tendency to seek out others for opinions and decisions. It’s also a time when you seem to attract talkative and interested people into your life. This is not about having others make decisions for you, but rather for benefiting from collaboration and learning about your own ideas and perspective through stimulating conversations. Over the coming year, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for arriving at satisfying agreements with others and benefiting from your close connections. Mercury is now moving towards a conjunction with Jupiter and today, conversations with others stand out as special. It’s a great time for talking through difficulties or putting conflicts behind you. You’re given the benefit of the doubt now. You’re in good shape for public relations, connecting with a counselor or lawyer, and meeting with clients.

Until November 5th, Mercury journeys through your sector of work, service, health, and routines, dear Gemini, making it a strong period for really sorting things out, organizing, and taking care of details. Mercury is particularly useful in this area of your chart! It may not be a time of notoriety or big decisions, but it’s a handy cycle for preparation, editing, learning new skills, and finding information that helps your health or work. If you can tame the tendency to fret, worry, and overthink things now, you can get a lot of things done. It’s a great time to shape up your daily routines. Today, Mercury is moving towards an alignment with Jupiter, and it can be an excellent time for opening up conversations with co-workers or people with whom you share your day, taking tests, going on interviews or consultations, seeing health care workers, and seeking out solutions to problems. This is a time for entertaining new approaches, methods, and ideas that can improve your life, starting little. You are feeling particularly hopeful about the future, and you should keep an eye open for opportunities to grow and expand your skills, a business, or project. For some of you, this is a great time to come together with a significant other and to see eye to eye with someone you care about.

Jupiter recently moved into your sector of self-expression, joy, and entertainment, dear Cancer, and will stay there for over a year, bringing excellent opportunities for enjoying more channels to express and enjoy yourself. Mercury moves into this sector today and will transit here until November 5th, and you’re inclined to give more thought to or plan out what this will mean for you. This is a great time for sharing games or ideas with others, particularly as you’ve been more withdrawn than usual lately. You might take a few more risks when it comes to expressing yourself, learning, and connecting. You’re likely to gain a receptive audience now, as well. Today, Mercury moves towards an alignment with Jupiter, and you feel lucky! Communications of all kinds are emphasized, but especially those involving creative contacts, children, and romantic interests. Grand ideas regarding these things could emerge now. If you’re a typical Cancer, people don’t always describe you as an open book, but today, they may very well! Hobbies are exciting, and new interests or opportunities to enjoy yourself can present themselves.

Until November 5th, Mercury’s transit of your solar fourth house turns your thoughts to family, home, and personal matters, dear Leo. You may be keeping a little more to yourself during this cycle, but talks with family or roommates are set to increase. With the rest of the world, you may not always find the right words, just for the time being, but this gives you more time to reflect. Family and home life can be big topics now. There can be a lot of mental activity at home, possibly with learning and work, and there can be interesting tidbits coming your way through the family. You’re likely to need some personal space to arrive at decisions, and you’re inclined to dig deep as you make them, considering your heart more than usual. However, today your ideas are big and ambitious as Mercury and Jupiter come together. This is a wonderful time for sharing happy moments with people you care about. You’ll want to speak truths, and you’re inclined to talk about issues clearly and openly. It’s an excellent day for coming up with long-range plans.

This is a wonderful day for entertaining big possibilities, dear Virgo, as Mercury and Jupiter come together in your sector of communications. Do be careful that you don’t take on too much simply because you’re feeling very optimistic, as you’ll regret it later when energy levels aren’t quite so high, but do look for opportunities to learn new things or expand your mind now. You’re in particularly good shape for dreaming up new ideas for projects, and you can feel thoroughly enthused about what you’re learning or communicating now. This is a time for seeing a way out of a problem or for understanding a matter more clearly, which comes as a relief. Mercury begins its transit of your communications sector today, where it will continue to influence until November 5th. During this cycle, your curiosity is piqued and you find yourself branching out, experimenting with new ideas, making connections, and perhaps taking short trips and getting out and about more often. You’re also more inclined to reach out to others. Siblings or classmates may come into stronger focus in your life. You’re eager to write, study, speak, or share ideas.

Mercury moves out of your sign and into your resources sector today, dear Libra, where it will stay until November 5th. You’ll pay more attention to your practical matters, money, resources, talents, and business affairs during this cycle, giving these things more thought. Mercury is impartial, objective, and reasonable, and you can benefit from taking an objective look at your resources now. You may want to plan or map out some strategies for improving your relationship with money, or you could be coming up with fabulous ideas about how to use your resources more efficiently. Mercury is about to join Jupiter in this sector of your solar chart, bringing especially helpful energy to your day for making plans and entertaining fabulous ideas. Details may not get much attention now, but today is more about dreaming up possibilities than weighing yourself down with practicalities. The details will follow, in time. For now, it’s about pumping yourself up and thinking in big terms, particularly when it comes to business, money, and security or comfort matters. You can be excited about exploring and building on your talents. Give big purchases more thought, however.

Mercury enters your sign today, Scorpio, and you’ll host this intelligent, reasonable, and curious planet until November 5th. While there continues to be a strong emphasis on the sign just behind yours and your privacy sector, Mercury now moves into the light in your solar chart and meets up with Jupiter. You are beginning to share a little more, by talking, writing, and connecting with others. This is nevertheless a rather independent time for thinking – you’re a self-starter making executive decisions during this cycle. You are more willing to share your thoughts. Today, you’re likely to receive nice feedback or encouraging news, and you can discover surprising information. You are communicating persuasively, and others see you as especially wise and fair. Opportunities to expand your mind, to learn something valuable, or to resolve a conflict may present themselves now. This is not the best time for self-discipline or detailed analysis, but it’s fabulous for big-picture thinking and broad ideas. Enjoy this creative vision today.

Mercury begins its transit of your privacy sector today, Sagittarius, where it will influence until November 5th. There is a move towards more insular but also more intuitive thinking during this almost three-week cycle. Decision-making may be solitary at times during this period, and it can take a little longer than usual as there can be so many variables to consider that it’s hard to come to definite conclusions! You think a lot about matters of the past, keep secrets, or simply spend more time in your own little world. With Mercury and your ruler, Jupiter, coming together in this sector, you’re likely to see a matter far more clearly today. Hindsight is valuable now, as it helps you move forward. This is also a time for drawing upon your wisdom and helping others. This can be an excellent time to open up about a private matter with someone you trust. You may have a significant meeting or event that occurs behind the scenes or a new understanding of an issue that has weighed heavily on your conscience. You see things in a more positive and forgiving light, and this is powerful.

Until November 7th, you’ll have more contact with friends, groups, and associates, Capricorn, as Mercury now transits your solar eleventh house. You can pick up some very useful information through others during this period that subtly but effectively enhances your communications. It’s a good time for sharing your knowledge with others. This is also a time for entertaining non-traditional ideas and experimenting with new thoughts, interests, and studies or projects. You have more enthusiasm for your dreams and plans. Mercury’s alignment with Jupiter influences the day and points to potential opportunities to learn, share, and enjoy friendships. Mental connections and contacts are made. There can be wonderful conversations with friends and hopeful new projects on the horizon. It may not be the most sensitive of times, but it can be a useful influence for resolving conflicts. Thinking in big, broad terms can help you come up with innovative new ideas and plans. Details may not get attention today, but they can be sorted out later. Now is the time for stretching your mind and entertaining exciting possibilities.

Mercury moves into your solar tenth house of career and reputation, dear Aquarius, where it will transit until November 5th. You’re inclined to give more thought to your responsibilities, plans, work, and reputation during this cycle. You’re also more accountable for what you communicate and more aware of how you are coming across when you speak or write. Others may recognize you for your ideas or intelligence, and this is rewarding. This cycle is often useful for making business contacts and connections or for learning more about your field. You might find yourself in the position to make decisions about your life direction and career now. A Mercury-Jupiter alignment influences today and you’re hungry to learn new things and to come to conclusions and resolutions! This is a powerful time for optimism and hope or supportive, helpful news that excites you about your future. Look for openings and opportunities, particularly involving career, business, friendships, alliances, and reputation. Who you know may be important now, but perhaps even more vital is what you say or the ideas you come up with.

Until November 5th, Mercury’s transit of your spirit sector eases self-expression and smooths out communications, dear Pisces. Your outlook is positive, and you’re inclined to seek solutions rather than harp on problems during this cycle. You’re looking for a little more on a mental level. Your thinking is less about the details and more about the bigger picture. The downside of this is that you may overlook essential points, but you’re also finding more pleasure in learning. Mercury’s meet-up with Jupiter influences the day and can have you feeling excited about a project, idea, or venture. There can be good news or conversations that inspire you. This is a time of big ideas and creative vision. Your optimism can lead you to consider something you never felt was in the realm of possibility. The important thing now is that you’re feeling inspired and allowing new ideas to flow. Stretch your mind far and fill in all of the details later when good energy is with you for doing so.

Tarot Card of the Day

Seven of Coins

October 16, 2017

The Seven of this suit is typically a paean to the humble laborer who is willing to show up every day and sweat in the sun for next season’s bounty. The traditional concept is cultivation, with an attitude that slow and steady wins the race, with faith in nature’s assistance. The protagonist of this card doesn’t make excuses, isn’t whimsical or moody, but is dedicated and sees the job through. Of course, it’s no good to count your chickens before they hatch, but there’s no question that the person who is vigilant over a project is more likely to get the desired result.

Someone who works with nature, cooperating with her ways, will waste less energy and time than the person who works against her. As a side meaning, we sometimes see this normally humble farmer in a moment of frenzy, betting the crop on a roll of the dice. This represents a moment of dementia, addiction or desperation which hopefully will not last long enough for the farmer to lose everything!

Daily Love Tarot

The Sun

October 16, 2017

The Sun is an invitation to a supportive relationship in which you can be yourself around your significant other. You feel relaxed and loved, with a sense of peace of heart. You’ve struck gold and entered into a new realm. Keep looking if this is not how you feel because it is how things should be. You can’t expect improvement in a long-term union if you do not take effective steps to create it.

Your Erotic Tarot

The Judgement

October 16, 2017

The Judgement card represents a sexual awakening, and now that you aren’t afraid to move in a new direction, a whole new world awaits you. What sex positions do you want to try, and which fantasies have you been dying to act out? Being honest with yourself and potential partner(s) about the details of what you desire will help you get what you want faster, and the end result will be much more satisfying. And above all, enjoy your sexual liberation!

Earth Sky News for Monday, October 16th: Keep watching moon, Venus, Mars

Before dawn tomorrow – October 17, 2017 – continue watching the spectacular moon and planets before dawn. The waning moon and Venus will easily catch your eye. The faint starlike point of light near the moon is the red planet Mars. Dazzling Venus outshines Mars by some 200 times now.

The sky chart at top shows the morning scene for mid-northern North American latitudes. But no matter where you live worldwide, look for faint Mars near the moon and for brilliant Venus below the moon and Mars. From mid-northern latitudes in Europe and Asia, the moon appears higher up relative to Mars than the lunar crescent appears in North America.

Click here for recommended almanacs; they can give you the rising times for the moon, Mars, Venus and the sun in your sky.

As the predawn darkness gives way to dawn, expect Mars to disappear in the glare of morning twilight while the moon and Venus remain in view. Some sharp-sighted sky watchers might even see the moon and Venus after sunrise. After all, the moon and Venus rank as the second-brightest and third-brightest bodies to light up the heavens, respectively, after the sun.

Earth orbits the sun in between the orbits of Venus and Mars. Venus is the 2nd planet outward from the sun, and Mars is the 4th. Earth, of course, is the 3rd planet out from our local star.

Why is Mars so faint now, while Venus is so bright? Venus, the larger of these two planets, is always bright in our sky, in part because of its nearness to us, but also because its surface is covered with highly reflective clouds. Mars lacks those thick clouds, and is far across the solar system from Earth now.

Bottom line: Before dawn tomorrow – on October 17, 2017 – watch for the spectacular view of the moon, Mars and Venus.

On Monday, October 16th, We Honor the Goddess Ereshkigal

Areas of Influence: Ereshkigal was the Sumerian Goddess of Attalu, the land of the dead and ancestral memories.

She ruled this land alone passing laws and judgment upon the deceased. Later she fell in love with Nergal who was sent with offerings of food during a feast.

As only the dead were able to stay in Attalu he had to return home. Ereshkigal was so upset by his departure that she threatened the king of the Gods that she would bring all of the dead back to life. Nergal was permitted to return and they ruled the underworld together.

Another Sumerian myth tells the story of her sister Inanna’s visit into the underworld. The Goddess is not pleased to see her as she fears she has come to take over her Kingdom. She turns her into a corpse but is eventually she is forced to release her. For more information on this myth please go to the page listed for Inanna.

Some scholar’s suggest that this Goddess represents another aspect of Inanna as they both symbolize the changing of the seasons.

Origins and Genealogy: This Goddess is said to be Inanna’s elder sister her parents were Nammu and Na

Strengths: Not intimidated by other Gods and Goddesses.

Weaknesses: Jealous of her sister’s beauty.

Ereshkigal’s Symbolism

The Burney Relief is said by some archeologists to represent this Goddess. In this sculpture she is shown as a naked winged Goddess standing on a lion with owls flanking her sides.

She is also depicted as a big dark haired Goddess who sleeps naked in a palace made of lapis lazuli.

Sacred Animals: Lions and owls.

Sacred Crystals: Lapis lazuli.

Ereshkigal’s Archetype

The Crone: Ereshkigal is a classic example of a Crone Goddess, she is fierce and uncompromising and rules over the land of the dead.

In the Pagan tradition the Goddess is often split into three to depict the different stages of a woman’s life: mother, maiden and Crone.

The Crone represents the wise old woman whose child bearing days are behind her. Other associations with this Archetype include: compassion, transformation, healing and bawdiness death and endings. She is the respected older woman or grand parent at the heart of family who enjoys life and sharing her experience.

Unfortunately the word Crone or Hag often has negative connotations as many wise woman and midwives were persecuted as witches in the middle ages.

Shadow Crone is the bitter, old woman who has failed to learn from her life. She blames all her failings and unhappiness on a society that no longer respects the elders. As a result she becomes increasingly isolated and fearful.

Working with the Crone Archetype

The Crone: The Crone maybe one of your archetypes if you have gained wisdom, learning from your mistakes and showing a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances.

You are experiencing the Crone’s shadow if you have become rigid in your beliefs and have become stuck in a rut having lost all ability to let those areas of your life go that no longer serve you.

The Magickal Day of Mondays

Monday is the day of the moon itself, and it’s a day that’s connected to lunar colors like silver, white, or even a pale blue. Metals and gemstones like silver, pearl, opal and moonstone all come into play today.

There are plenty of deities associated with the moon – Thoth and Diana for instance – and herbal correspondences include many members of the mint family. Utilize wintergreen or peppermint, as well as catnip, comfrey, sage and chamomile in your workings.

When it comes to Monday magic, because of that lunar connection, it’s a good time to focus on workings related to childbearing and family life, purity and virginity, healing, wisdom, and intuition. Do a little bit of self exploration and work on developing your intuition – learn to trust your gut. Celebrate birth and life, and make some magic to fix what is broken.

The Witches Guide to Monday

Think for a moment on all of the witchery, magick and enchantments that you have discovered. Don’t be afraid to adjust spells to suit your own specific needs. Any gentle, illusory, and dreamy charms and spells can be enhanced when you work on the day of the week that is dedicated to the moon. Mondays are a fantastic day to boost your psychic abilities and to tune in to your intuition and empathy. It also gives you the opportunity to work with a different lunar phase each and every Monday, which means in one month you could work four different types of moon magicks on Mondays. How’s that for adding to your repertoire? You are going to have mad skills in no time at all.

So light up those lunar scented candles and add a little mystique to your outfit by wearing an enchanting lunar color. Wear your sparkling silver jewelry and maybe add a pair of dangling silver earrings or a pendant shaped like a crescent moon. Create lunar potions and philters; make a dream catcher and give it as a gift to someone you love. Burn some sandalwood or jasmine-scented incense today to inspire the glamour and magick of the moon. Slice up a favorite variety of fruit that is in season for a snack or share it with your love and enjoy his or her lunar and romantic qualities. Brew up a cup of chamomile tea, enchant it with a little moon magick, and relax and get a good night’s sleep.

Most importantly, get outside tonight and watch the moon for a while. What phase is she in? What color was the moon as she rose? Why not start a journal and write down at what location the moon rises and sets for a few seasons? This is a great way to teach you to tune in and to become more aware of the moon and the influence that she pulls into our lives. Try calling on Selene for her magickal assistance, and call Thoth for wisdom and strength. Get to know the Norse Mani and the Latvian Meness. These gods of the moon have plenty to teach, and if you allow their influence to cycle through your life, you’ll receive many blessings. Be imaginative, and create your own personal lunar magick and witchery. Go on….the moonlight becomes you.

Monday’s Witchery

Monday is named after the moon. The Latin term for Monday is Dies Lunae (“moon’s day”); in the Old English language, this day was Monandaeg; in Greek, it was Hermera Selenes. All of these different names and languages translate to the same thing: the “day of the moon.”

Working with the different phases of the moon is an important skill that takes a bit of time for Witches to learn. So why not cut to the chase and experiment with the day of the week that is dedicated to the moon in all of its magickal energies and aspects?

Magickally, Monday encourages the lunar energies of inspiration, illusion, prophetic dreams, emotions, psychic abilities, travel, women’s mysteries, and fertility.

Moon Phase: Fourth Quarter

Moon Sign: Virgo

Incense: Neroli

The Magick of the Fourth Quarter

(From the waning half moon until the dark of the moon.)

This is the dark time of the moon. You may find that your psychic talents take a little vacation during the dark phases of the moon, or, on the other hand, they may come roaring to life with an all-out bombardment on your senses. Personally, I have found that abilities such as empathy and psychometry are more pronounced at this time. Why, you may wonder? Well, I have found that this type of psychic ability forces you to look within and to be still as the information comes to you— what better time than in the waning moon, when your powers are focused internally? Magickally, now is the occasion to tackle serious issues, such as extreme protection magick, bindings, or banishings, and keeping away criminals, prowlers, or stalkers. Casting your spells in the final days of the moon’s cycle (when the moon is not visible at all) will increase the force behind your banishing and protective magick. This phase of the moon is often linked to the darker aspects of the Goddess, when she is a spiritual warrior; again, Hecate is a good one to work with in this phase, but you can also call on Sekhmet, the Morrigan, or even Kali, if you are really feeling brave.

The More You Know – Samhain

“Everything that we know about the religious festivals of the pagan Anglo-Saxons comes from a book written by the Christian monk, the Venerable Bede, entitled De temporum ratione, meaning The Reckoning of Time, in which he described the calendar of the year. The pagan Anglo-Saxons followed a calendar with twelve lunar months, with the occasional year having thirteen months so that the lunar and solar alignment could be corrected. Bede claimed that the greatest pagan festival was Modraniht (meaning Mother Night), which was situated at the Winter solstice and which marked the start of the Anglo-Saxon year. Following this festival, in the month of Solmonað (February), Bede claims that the pagans offered cakes to their deities. Then, in Eostur-monath Aprilis (April), a spring festival was celebrated, dedicated to the goddess Eostre, and the later Christian festival of Easter took its name from this month and its goddess. The month of September was known as Halegmonath, meaning Holy Month, which may indicate that it had special religious significance. The month of November was known as Blod-Monath, meaning Blood Month, and was commemorated with animal sacrifice, both in offering to the gods, and also likely to gather a source of food to be stored over the winter. Remarking on Bede’s account of the Anglo-Saxon year, the historian Brian Branston noted that they “show us a people who of necessity fitted closely into the pattern of the changing year, who were of the earth and what grows in it” and that they were “in fact, a people who were in a symbiotic relationship with mother earth and father sky”.”

What is the Summerland?

In some modern magical traditions, it is believed that the dead cross over into a place called the Summerland. This is a predominantly Wiccan and NeoWiccan concept, and is not typically found in non-Wiccan Pagan traditions. While there may be a similar concept of the afterlife in those traditions, the word Summerland seems to be generally Wiccan in its use.

Wiccan author Scott Cunningham described the Summerland as a place where the soul goes on to live forever.

In Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner, he says, “This realm is neither in heaven nor the underworld. It simply is — a non-physical reality much less dense than ours. Some Wiccan traditions describe it as a land of eternal summer, with grassy fields and sweet flowing rivers, perhaps the Earth before the advent of humans. Others see it vaguely as a realm without forms, where energy swirls coexist with the greatest energies – the Goddess and God in their celestial identities.”

A Pennsylvania Wiccan who asked to be identified as Shadow says, “The Summerland is the great crossover. It’s not good, it’s not bad, it’s just a place we go where there is no more pain or suffering. We wait there until it is time for our souls to return in another physical body, and then we can move on to our next lifetime. Some souls may be finished incarnating, and they stay in the Summerland to guide newly arriving souls through the transition.”

In his book The Pagan Family, Ceisiwr Serith points out that belief in the Summerland – or reincarnation, or Tir na nOg, or ancestor rites – are all part of the Pagan acceptance of the physical state of death. He says these philosophies “help both the living and the dead, and that is enough to justify them.”

Does the Summerland Really Exist?

We get a lot of emails here at About Paganism asking if the Summerland is a real place, that really and truly exists. That’s one of those great existential questions that’s simply impossible to answer. Just like our Christian friends may believe heaven is real, it can’t be proven. Likewise, there’s no way to prove the existence of a metaphysical concept like the Summerland – or of Valhalla, or of reincarnation, and so forth. We can believe, but we can’t prove it in any way, shape, or form.

Wiccan author Ray Buckland says in Wicca for Life, “Summerland is, as we might expect, a beautiful place. What we know of it is what we have gleaned from people who have returned from near-death experiences, and from accounts obtained by genuine mediums who communicate with the dead.”

Most reconstructionist paths do not adhere to the notion of the Summerland – it seems to be a uniquely Wiccan ideology. Even among Wiccan paths who accept the concept of the Summerland, there are varying interpretations as to what the Summerland actually is. Like many aspects of modern Wicca, how you view the afterlife will depend on the teachings of your particular tradition.

There are certainly other variations of the idea of life after death among various religions.

Christians believe in heaven and hell, many Norse Pagans believe in Valhalla, and the ancient Romans believes that warriors went to the Elysian Fields, while ordinary people went to the Plain of Asphodel. For those Pagans who don’t have a defined name or description of the afterlife, there is still typically a notion that the spirit and the soul live on somewhere, even if we don’t know where it is or what to call it.

Pagans and Death

For many modern Pagans, there is a somewhat different philosophy on death and dying than what is seen in the non-Pagan community. While our non-Pagans see death as an ending, some Pagans view it as a beginning of the next phase of our existence. Perhaps it is because we view the cycle of birth and life and death and rebirth as something magical and spiritual, a never ending, ever turning wheel. Rather than being disconnected from death and dying, we tend to acknowledge it as part of a sacred evolution.

In The Pagan Book of Living and Dying, author Starhawk says, “Imagine if we truly understood that decay is the matrix of fertility… we might view our own aging with less fear and distaste, and greet death with sadness, certainly, but without terror.”

As the Pagan population ages – and certainly, we are doing so – it’s becoming more and more likely that at some point each of us will have to bid farewell to a fellow Pagan, Heathen, Druid, or other member of our community. When that happens, what is the appropriate response? What can be done to honor the person’s beliefs and send them on their way in a way that they themselves would have valued, while still managing to maintain sensitivity in dealing with their non-Pagan family members and friends?
Views of the Afterlife

Many Pagans believe that there is some sort of afterlife, although that tends to take varying forms, depending on the individual belief system. Some followers of NeoWiccan paths accept the afterlife as the Summerland, which Wiccan author Scott Cunningham described as a place where the soul goes on to live forever.

Members of non-Wiccan groups, particularly those who follow a more Reconstructionist slant, may see the afterlife as Valhalla or Fólkvangr, for those who adhere to a Norse belief system, or Tir na nOg, for individuals who participate in a Celtic path. Hellenic Pagans may see the afterlife as Hades.

For those Pagans who don’t have a defined name or description of the afterlife, there is still typically a notion that the spirit and the soul live on somewhere, even if we don’t know where it is or what to call it.

Tawsha is a Pagan in Indiana who follows an eclectic path. She says, “I don’t know what happens to us when we die, but I like the idea of the Summerland. It seems peaceful, a place where our souls can regenerate before they reincarnate into a new body. But my husband is a Druid, and his beliefs are different and focus more on the Celtic view of the afterlife, which seems a little more ethereal to me. I think it’s really all just different interpretations of the same place.”

A Pagan Blessing for the Dead

Choose four participants. One carries a rock, representing the earth, and stands to the North. One carries a feather, representing Air, and stands to the East. Another stands to the South, carrying a candle or some incense to represent Fire. A fourth can hold a cup of Water to the West — if you’re fortunate enough to hold your ritual near an ocean or river, use that to represent Water. On your altar, in the center of the circle, place a picture or some other memento of the person you are saying goodbye to.

Form a circle, and call upon the elements. Invite the powers of the four directions to come watch over you. Stand in the center and say:

Take me now, take me now
for to face the Summerlands*.
By the earth and wind and the fire and rain
I’m on my way,remember me.

Turn to the North and say:

Take me now back to the earth
from which we spring and then return.
I shall cross over, now it is my turn.
I am not afraid Remember me.

Repeat this verse, turning to each of the four directions. Substitute the different elements where appropriate.

Finally, touch each family member with your athame as you say the following:

Blood of my blood
Bone of my bone
Flesh of my flesh
Keep my soul alive
I will live on
Within your hearts
I am not afraid
Remember me

If you have ashes for the deceased, you may wish to scatter them at this time. Take a moment to reflect on the good memories you have of your departed friend or family member.

*If your particular tradition believes we go to some other place after death, feel free to substitute the appropriate place name for “Summerlands.” If you’re not sure where we end up, you can simply say “the other side.”

“Come now together. Join hands and share with us the understanding of death and rebirth; be as a tree which spreads its roots in the earth, and its branches to the heavens, standing witness to eternal transformation. For death is not a wall against which all thought and all consciousness must cease, but a door, a door to new life, to wonder, and to enchantment. …Be still now and look within, with closed eyes. Feel…feel. Feel the earth beneath your feet , feel the roots of your being re-connect with the earth, with the Mother. And as you do, your mind relaxes, your body relaxes, with each breath you take. Breathe deeply, gently, and imagine to yourself a leaf, full of life, as it fades and transforms, to fall and float gently downward, into a flowing stream. In your mind’s eye of imagination, see it float effortlessly, down and down the stream of life….See it reach the sea, the vastness of infinity. See it sink gently beneath the waves, gradually releasing its form to become one with the infinite. Whence it came, thence it returns, to feed and nourish new forms, new life, new consciousness, Thus the cycle continues eternal, no thing truly lost, all things truly one. …And now, open your eyes; feel the warmth, the love and the light of those around you. Let us now begin the ancient rite. Call ye now the powers of the Lord and the Lady, invoke the Force with ourselves and know that that which can be desired can be manifested. Call ye now and be reborn …”

We instinctively gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In order to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead.

The Moon in Virgo generally favors the following activities: Mental pursuits, work activities, services, and routines. Activities that would benefit from tending to details.

The Sky This Week for October 16 to 22

A meteor shower, a well-known fall constellation, and more will appear in the sky this week.
By Richard Talcott

Monday, October 16

The night sky’s most conspicuous harbinger of winter now rises in the east before midnight local daylight time. The constellation Orion the Hunter appears on its side as it rises, with ruddy Betelgeuse to the left of the three-star belt and blue-white Rigel to the belt’s right. As Orion climbs higher before dawn, the figure rotates so that Betelgeuse lies at the upper left and Rigel at the lower right of the constellation pattern.

Tuesday, October 17

The predawn sky sparkles with activity this morning as a waning crescent Moon joins brilliant Venus and ruddy Mars. The Moon appears 5 percent lit and lies just 2° to Mars’ left. Venus appears 6° below the other two. The best views come 45 minutes to an hour before sunrise, when the trio stands out against the morning twilight. Most binoculars will capture all three in a single field of view.

Wednesday, October 18

Venus appears 0.2° north of the 4th-magnitude star Eta (η) Virginis this morning. At magnitude –3.9, the planet shines more than a thousand times brighter than the star.

Mars passes 0.5° north of the 4th-magnitude star Beta (β) Virginis this morning. At magnitude 1.8, the Red Planet appears about five times brighter than the star.

Thursday, October 19

Uranus reaches opposition and peak visibility tonight. Opposition officially arrives at 2 p.m. EDT, when the outer planet lies opposite the Sun in our sky. This means it rises at sunset, climbs highest in the south around 1 a.m. local daylight time, and sets at sunrise. (From 40° north latitude, Uranus peaks at an altitude of 60°, the highest it has appeared at opposition since February 1963.) The magnitude 5.7 planet lies in southeastern Pisces, 1.8° west-northwest of magnitude 4.3 Omicron (ο) Piscium. Although Uranus shines brightly enough to glimpse with the naked eye under a dark sky, use binoculars to locate it initially. A telescope reveals the planet’s blue-green disk, which spans 3.7″.

New Moon occurs at 3:12 p.m. EDT. At its new phase, the Moon crosses the sky with the Sun and so remains hidden in our star’s glare.

Friday, October 20

With the Moon now gone from the predawn sky, the rest of this week offers an excellent opportunity to view the zodiacal light. From the Northern Hemisphere, early autumn is the best time of year to observe this elusive glow before sunrise. It appears slightly fainter than the Milky Way, so you’ll need a clear moonless sky and an observing site located far from the city. Look for the cone-shaped glow, which points nearly straight up from the eastern horizon, shortly before morning twilight begins (around 5:45 a.m. local daylight time at mid-northern latitudes). The Moon remains out of the morning sky until November 3, when its bright light will return and overwhelm the much fainter zodiacal light.

Saturday, October 21

If you’re out enjoying the predawn darkness, you’ll likely see a number of bright streaks peppering the sky. These are Orionid meteors, which belong to an annual shower that peaks before dawn. Observers under a dark sky could see up to 20 meteors per hour shortly before twilight begins, when the constellation Orion the Hunter climbs highest in the south. (The meteors appear to radiate from a point in northern Orion.) With the Moon absent from the morning sky, viewing conditions could hardly be better this year.

Sunday, October 22

Look high in the east after darkness falls this week, and you should see autumn’s most conspicuous star group. The Great Square of Pegasus stands out in the evening sky at this time of year, though it appears balanced on one corner and looks more diamond-shaped. These four almost equally bright stars form the body of Pegasus the Winged Horse. The fainter stars that form the rest of this constellation’s shape trail off to the square’s west.

Venus appears 1.3° southwest of the 3rd-magnitude star Gamma (γ) Virginis this morning.

The Witches Moon Phase for Monday, October 16th

Waning Crescent
Illumination: 11%

The 26 days old Moon is in ♍ Virgo.

The Moon today is in a Waning Crescent phase. In this phase the Moon’s illumination is growing smaller each day until the New Moon. During this phase the Moon is getting closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing the Earth with only a small edge of the Moon being illuminated. This phase is best viewed an hour or 2 before the sunrise and can be quite beautiful if you’re willing to get up early. It can also be a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the edge where the illuminated portion meets the dark side, the craters and mountains cast long shadows making them easier to observe with a telescope or binoculars.

Phase Details for – Monday, October 16, 2017

Phase: Waning Crescent
Illumination: 11%
Moon Age: 26.28 days
Moon Angle: 0.53
Moon Distance: 378,695.14 km

Moon Diary

Something Old, Something New.

The New Moon in Virgo, 27 degrees, 20th September 2017

Restless, inventive, and mad as a spoon, September’s new Moon in Virgo offers fresh – sometimes startling – insights into current situations.

A new Moon is always a time for fresh starts. In Virgo, those might be about well-being, organisation, routines, or even how we take care of our beloved pets. This new Moon encourages us to think about how all our little everyday rituals add up to influence our experience of daily life.

Disruptive Uranus, planet of change, connects with the Moon, bringing unusual ideas and unexpected feelings to the surface. The Moon with Uranus represents unconventional families, challenges our assumptions about emotional relationships, and favours innovative swerves and intuitive light-bulb moments.

None of these gifts come easily – we’ll need to experiment to find ways to balance things. Throwing out everything old and traditional isn’t necessarily a wise thing to do right now, but stubbornly refusing to try something new isn’t very helpful either. It’s an ongoing conversation with plenty of Virgo details and analysis during the month ahead.

Whatever family means to us is emphasised by dwarf planet Ceres in the watery and caring sign of Cancer, making a dynamic aspect with the new Moon.

Ceres in the Moon’s own sign makes a powerful statement about nourishment of mind, body, and spirit. Eating well is a big theme here, and maybe Ceres points towards the love and pleasure of food while challenging more rigid ideas about whether food is ‘clean’ or ‘dirty’. It’s time for a fresh look at food rituals and routines.

Chiron in Pisces chips in here too, opposing the Sun and Moon and calling attention to that Virgo-Pisces service and sacrifice theme. The victims of unthinking conventions or outdated ideas can benefit from considering radical new solutions and embracing some imaginative problem solving.

If we can work with this new Moon, some exciting changes to daily life can be seeded during September. Stunning insights are there for us, we just have ask ‘why not?’ and see where that might take us.
