About three and a half years ago, a small, kinda rough-looking little Tuxedo cat appeared in my neighborhood- my roommate and I named her Sophie. Sophie was almost completely feral, wouldn’t let people get near her, but she was very appreciative of the food and fresh water we put out. And, in due course, around late March 2008, Sophie produced a litter of two tiny kittens – a larger black-and-white guy whom you see here, by the name of Cookie, and a much tinier little girl-cat sister, all black except for two
white spots on her chest, whom we named Mookie. Cookie, even outside as a ‘feral’ kitten, was a sweetheart, you could tell. His Mom would be showing him how to stalk something and he’d lose it in mid-stalk, just get too carried away with being a kitten, and start rolling around on the lawn, while Sophie glared at him. And when we caught him and his little sister, they got nothing but sweeter. (Incidentally, Sophie and all her other kittens, as well as most of her boyfriends, were alleventually caught, fixed, vaccinated and found loving homes.) Mookie has stayed a petite little girl-kitten, over the last three years- but Cookie grew! Cookie is now a very handsome eighteen-pounder of a tomcat, a big huge bundle of love- his mostly-symmetrical markings make him very handsome, and the crowning touch is the tiny black spot on his white nose and a tiny white firefly tip on his black tail. He’s still a totally friendly, affectionate guy, for being born “feral”- in fact he’s purring in my lap as I write this. We’re very glad Cookie allowed himself to be captured and ‘domesticated’- and he survived the relocation to Georgia from New Jersey without incident. He’s still buds with all the rest of the members of the Pride. One photo shows him sharing a window-seat with Birdie, another, presumably-unrelated feral tuxedo-cat we caught. We hope he stays with us for many, many years to come. He and I have “cuddle time” every morning when I check Cat of the Day and other sites- he curls in my lap and purrs and kneads and nuzzles- it’s a daily ritual. We’ve always thought he was especially handsome, and really ought to be in commercials or something – he’s smart enough to train, and he’s a beautiful boy, to be sure. |

| Name: | McCarty |
Age: | Two and a half years old |
| Gender: | Male | Breed: | Dachshund mix |
| Home: | Ashland, Virginia, USA | ||
|
This is my baby boy McCarty. He is named after a Detroit Red Wings Hockey player. McCarty is a Dachshund/Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix. He looks like a dachshund. He is tan in color with white under his neck, nose and tip of his tail.
He has a very human like nature. He loves his mom and whines like a baby every time I leave. He knows the words “car”, “go”, “ride” and any signs of me leaving such as putting on my shoes, grabbing the car keys or purse. I usually have to spell out the words if I am getting ready to leave the house so he won’t get upset. He loves to cuddle with me in bed every night just like a person; under the covers and head on the pillow. He follows me from room to room to get my attention. He loves to play with toys that have squeakers and anything that has stuffing. Once the squeakers and stuffing are out, I just add the remains to his toy basket that is full of destroyed toys. I got McCarty at nine weeks old and he is two and a half now and weighs a whopping seventeen pounds. I think mommy needs to cut down on the treats a little! McCarty is everything I need to keep me company and is loved so very much! |

Bojangles is a four and a half month old Boxer, Pitbull mix. She’s roughly three and a half months in the photos. I rescued her at six weeks old. The mother wasn’t producing enough milk and was rejecting her and her sister. She is now an energetic and very very affectionate puppy, and also very well behaved.
She is very outgoing. She loves everybody and loves other animals as well cats and dogs. She is very active and loves to play tug of war the most. She also loves rawhide bones, and she knows sit and lay down very well. And about 70% of the time will shake (but she’s still young). When I come home from work she jumps into my lap and licks me for a good five to ten minutes, because she’s so excited to see me again. She is very affectionate. If she’s not in “play mode,” she likes to just snuggle up next to you and put her head on your lap and sleep. She loves going for rides and when she’s in the car she’s on my lap snuggling up to me and tries to lick me. I love her. |

I‘m Johanna and I’m eleven years old. The name of my cat is Max and he’s fifteen years old, so he is even older than me. He is so sweet and I pet him every day. Sometimes I play with him and the other time he sleeps. He is getting pretty old for a cat, so that’s okay. Old people sleep a lot, too.
The special think about him, that makes him different from other cats is: He loves to eat Nutella and milk. As you can tell, he doesn’t mind getting picked up or carried around, and will even fall asleep there! But I love him most of all, because he is so sweet!!! |

WOTC’s Spell of the Day for March 3rd – Spell To Know The Truth
Spell To Know The Truth
Take a fresh banana, red ribbon and a piece of parchment, and reflect upon that which you seek the truth about.
Light a white candle, and clear your mind. Then, on the parchment, write that which you want to know. Fold the paper towards you three times. Then, slice the banana open near the middle, and push the paper into it. Tie the ribbon around the banana to seal it up, and make sure to have a longer strand attached, so you can hang the banana. Say out loud:
“The truth will be shown to me, as I will – So Mote It Be!”
Hang the banana outside, on a tree – or on a nail outside your front door. When the banana has spoiled, you will know the truth in the matter.

Hello, my name is Squirt, but my family sometimes calls me Squishy (they’re really silly, huh?) As you can see from my pictures I’m a really sweet boy…when I want to be. I love to be petted and sit in my human’s lap, but only on my terms. If they try to touch me any other time, I like to hiss at them to show my dissatisfaction at being touched without my permission. My family accepted a stray into the house last year!! (And they did not even consult me first!). I like her now, but she really got on my nerves at first. Kittens, HMPF!!! My Mom grows Cat Nip for us, and we just love rolling in it. We have a very Zen day when she gives us some.
Mom here. Our little Squirtzie boy is truly a sweetie, he’s just too “cat-ly” to admit it. He likes to spend a lot of time outside, but wants someone to be outside with him. He’s definitely a social kitty. He’s even starting to warm to our other female cat, a stray we named Zebra. I can tell they secretly love each other. We love Squirt to pieces, even when he’s hissing at us! |

After our eighteen year old poodle died I thought I could never love another dog. A few months later I was browsing on the internet and saw an ad for a Toy Poodle puppy. Even though I didn’t want another dog I kept looking at that ad. Finally I decided I had to meet this little puppy. Well I took one look at that adorable face and immediately fell in love. We’ve had Nelson for six months and he has brought so much joy into our lives. He loves to snuggle with me on the couch and there is never a shortage of kisses. When we come home he is always waiting at the door to greet us with a wagging tail and and a happy howl. Even though Nelson is only 5 1/2 pounds he’s a terrific watchdog and protects our yard from pesky squirrels. He has also become a wonderful big brother to our Dusky Conure Rocky. Nelson has proven that a house really is not a home without a Toy Poodle!
We have a web site at A Conure, A Poodle, and Two Parakeets! with more pictures! |

Age: | Three years old |
| Gender: | Female | Breed: | Boxer |
| Home: | Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA | ||

Hello! This is my adorable furkid, Francesca, a.k.a. Franny! She’s also known as Wiggle Buns, Fat Head, Peanut Head, Francini, and Fran Fran. I fell in love with Franny the second I saw her profile on Green Acres Boxer Rescue’s website. I checked their website daily, some times multiples times a day, for almost five months until I could no longer resist and I sent in an adoption application. I still can’t believe she was there that long! She was very underweight and had a litter of puppies when she was surrendered. She is now very muscular but petite; I think she is the perfect size! She’s now approximately three years old. Franny has been a member of our family since April 10, 2011 and every day since then ahs been comical – she provides a lot of laughs. Every day when I come home from work she is so excited to see me that she does her bean dancing (it’s a boxer thing …) spastically for five minutes as if I was gone for weeks on end. I love it!
The best thing about Franny is her long tail. She loves to spin it really fast stick straight in a perfect circle – I always shout “watch out! preparing for take off!”, because it looks a lot like a helicopter blade. I never want to own a boxer with a nub tail now; there is a lot of personality that shines through her whip of a tail. Franny is the best snuggle buddy ever! Some of her favorite things to do are chase (and eat) flies that are in the house, watch the squirrels and deer that come in our yard, run around super fast with her butt really low to the ground (I call those Nascar laps), play with her squeaky rubber chicken, chase laser pointers, and go for car rides. Thank you Franny for being such a wonderful k9 companion. Momma (and Daddy!) loves you so much! |

SEEKING THE SIGN TO DRAGONHEIM
SEEKING THE SIGN TO DRAGONHEIM
Mighty wings once carved the cumulus
sowing storm filled clouds and reaping rain.
Soaring, we bounded the radius
of the peak crowned heights of our domain.
How long is the road to Dragonheim?
The length of a dreamer’s call.
How number the miles to Dragonheim?
It is none, I say, and all.
And the sky roared when touched by our flames
it sang to words wrought in fume and smoke.
Firey visions dwelt within the names
of numberless tribes of dragon folk.
Where winds the path to Dragonheim?
Hidden in a name; a secret sound.
Where stands the entrance to Dragonheim?
In the place never lost, though seldom found.
Majestic mountains once housed our young
born from crystal eggs that caught the light.
In strong shadowed heights our dwellings hung
ne’er crossed by the foes who feared our might.
What shapes the trail to Dragonheim?
A maze of dreams, pointing streight.
How travels the way to Dragonheim?
On paths of heart, devoid of hate.
Now the lands are gone, scourged by the ire
of the modern day people’s decree.
But spirits live on, look to the fires.
You must catch our souls to set us free.
In what age stands the halls of Dragonheim?
Time beyond time, between the worlds.
Where dwell the inhabitants of Dragonheim?
They smile as your spirits soar and curl.

| Name: | Dixie |
Age: | Fifteen months old |
| Gender: | Female | Breed: | Boxer, German Shorthaired Pointer |
| Home: | Pennsylvania, USA | ||
|
This is Dixie. She is such a fun loving dog and brings joy to everyone in the house. She shares a birthday with my younger sister, which makes her even more special to the rest of the family. We have two other dogs in the house as well, a female lab named Sandy who is only a week older than Dixie, and an elderly black lab mix named Bear. They all get along just fine, especially the younger two, who will wrestle and play all day long if we let them.
Dixie is a great companion, and she goes with me everywhere I can possibly take her, including school! I am studying to be a Veterinary Technician, and I often bring her to my campus with me; dogs are welcomed there with open arms. She loves going for rides in the truck, no matter how far, and she especially likes the small fries I sometimes get her at the drive through. She is a very active dog and enjoys going for walks and her favorite form of exercise is swimming! She could swim for hours upon hours if I didn’t call her out of the water so she could rest. I love going fishing, and she is always by my side-as you can see in the picture with water in the background. She is very curious about the fish I catch though – not quite sure what to make of them. Dixie also makes me laugh every day, whether she won’t stop licking me or she is burying her body under my blankets in a game of hide and seek, I always get a kick out her. I love Dixie with all of my heart and she brings so much joy and excitement to my otherwise pretty ordinary life. |

WOTC’s Spell of the Day for Feb. 17th – Cat Dreams
Cat Dreams
This spell teaches you how to energetically shape shift into a cat in your dreams. Shape shifting allows you merge with a particular animal spirit
and to bring the power and wisdom of this spirit into your own being. It means you can be as sleek, sure-footed, and cunning as a cat when you need to be. These can be very good traits which is why cats are so adaptive and prone to survival. Their ancestors have been around for thousands and thousands of years.
You will need pictures of cats and sandalwood incense. Cats come in many different colors, sizes and personality types. Become familiar with these many faces of cats, and in particular, what face most closely resembles who you are as a person. Take time to observe as many cats as you can. Watch how they interact with other cats and how they interact with humans. Merge with the cat spirit and become one with the cat Goddess, Bast.
Tonight before you go to sleep, put the pictures of cats on your altar and light the sandalwood incense. Call out to the cat Goddess Bast:
Dear Bast, Goddess of the divine feline
Please come to me tonight during dreamtime.
Blessed dreams! Blessed Be!
As you close your eyes to go to sleep, let the images of cats move through your mind’s eye. Merge with the cat spirit, and repeat to yourself as you drift to sleep:
Tonight I dream with the cat spirit. Blessed be, Bast!

| Name: | UtchieB |
Age: | Eighteen months old |
| Gender: | Male |
Kind: | Sphynx |
| Home: | East Hartford, Connecticut, USA |
||
|
UtchiB, as I call him, came from a backyard breeder. She was a very young woman who didn’t know what she was doing. I had lost my beautiful ten-year-old soulmate Sphynx, MooShoo on my birthday, February 13th from thrombosis.
I swore I would always have a beautiful Sphynx in my life, but only a rescue will do. I searched for over a year to find AustinButchie. When I took the hour-long road trip, I didn’t know what to expect. The breeder told me she was in over her head, and proceeded to bring a cat carrier full of beautiful nekkids down for me to see. Out popped UtchieB!!! He was a wild man, running all over the place. He was older than the other kittens, but I found his playfulness intriguing. Later on, I realized that he was probably the runt of his litter, as he is very small for his age. He is goofy, charming and a purr machine. UtchieB wanted nothing to do with his carrier, insisting on riding on my shoulders, purring all the way home. As far as gradually introducing him to my fur crew? Well, let’s just say he kept climbing over the babygates I had stacked in my bedroom door to be with the gang. The rest is history. UtchieB was entered into his first cat show shortly after that. While he did “okay” in the Household Pet category of the TICA show, a judge friend said he definitely needs to be shown as a purebred alter. Unfortunately, I do not have his papers so that wasn’t an option. He is happiest being housecat, though. And that’s okay with me!! |

Today’s Affirmation, Thought and Visualization for Feb. 14th

Today’s Affirmation
I have only to believe that I have no fear, and l my fear will melt away. I have only to believe in myself, and all my obstacles will lose their threat.
Today’s Thought
Our fear is of the unknown. Let go, throw yourself into the adventure of the self. The fear fades into the air you breathe.
Today’s Visualization
The Birth Of Athene
Athene, one of the most powerful of the Greek Goddesses, was born, fully armed, from the head of Zeus. On one level we can understand Her as a representation of our inner warrior – embodiment of the innate strengths within each one of us. In your mind conjure an image of Athene, furnished with helmet, shield and spear. Focus on this image and draw courage from the strengths she represents in you.

Lucky is a very lovely cat, but three years ago Lucky has a bad time. When he was born, Lucky’s mum had left him and so I gave him potatoes and milk until we could get kitten food. Lucky is grey and black (he looks like a tiger). He loves to play with me, with other cats and to sleep in his basket. When I come home from school, Lucky waits for me and he picks me up from the bus. He is so special because he is simply unique and cuddly.
I love Lucky very much! |

Blessed Monday, my dear friends!

Good Monday to you all! I hope you are having a great day. My granddaughter is having a birthday party this afternoon. Anyway, please forgive me if I fly through the postings today.
I hope you all having a fantastic day. And remember only 4 more days to the weekend, lol!
Weird Questions You Don’t Want to Ask Your Vet
Weird Questions You Don’t Want to Ask Your Vet
- Nicolas, selected from petMD
By Dr. Patty Khuly, PetMD
Got a question for your vet but too embarrassed to ask? Dr. Khuly answers some odd, gross and downright silly questions!
1. Why do some dogs have hair in their ears and some don’t?
Arctic vs. non-Arctic breeds, mostly. Dogs who must survive in cold climes are more likely to have hairy ears. That’s an easy one. Next…?
2. Why does my dog like to stare into my eyes and hold eye contact (not when he wants food or something)?
I will have to ask a behaviorist (or twelve) to get a better handle on this one but here’s what I suspect: Dog domestication has evolved patchily over the last eon or so. Greater domestication is accompanied by behavioral traits that include the very human (and much less dog-like) eye contact thing.
Extended eye contact among dogs is verboten unless you want to spar, but domesticated dogs have come to associate eye contact with humans as a way to get things from us. Wilder dogs (like Morgan) would never deign to beg in this way but happy dogs like Maddie fall all over themselves to get your attenshun* any way they can.
3. Did yoga develop from watching dogs? They totally do a downward dog thing.
Yes. Yogis obviously engage in bio-thievery. They totally stole the pose from dogs.
4. Why do dogs’ pads sometimes smell like evergreen meets rosin? And other times like corn chips?
Knowing your dogs I’d say it depends on the season, the hiking terrain and moisture levels. Got moist feet? Then maybe you’ve got yeast growing there; that can kind of smell like corn chips.
Hiking among the evergreens? Voilà.
5. What is the purpose of a dewclaw?
Vestigial; which means it no longer has a purpose. It is in the process of being evolutionarily rejected, which is why so many purebred and sporting dog owners want them lopped off.
6. Why do some dogs poop every morning like clockwork and other dogs is not as regular?
Why does my receptionist constantly complain of constipation in spite of an Activia habit, and my acupuncturist not-so-subtly tut-tut that my elimination habits are more frequent than most?
Get over it! As long as everything that goes in comes out and no impact on health results … who the frick cares?
7. Why do they say dogs can’t go into restaurants for health reasons — what health reasons?
They lie. Or rather … they are ignorant. They excuse the feverish sneezes of a human child in the table at the front of the restaurant as “cute” while a dog’s under-the-table snores are regarded as “the devil’s music.” (I’m making stuff up now.)
Honestly, I think most restaurants are more worried about dog bites and liability insurance than they are about any health risks. That or they truly are as stupid as all get-out.
8. What makes dog saliva so slippery?
I think I’ve also overheard that it’s the world’s best natural lubricant. Truly, however, I have no answer, other than to note that cat saliva is also incredibly viscous. Maybe someone else out there knows…?
9. If a dog’s tail hangs over its anus why doesn’t it ever get really dirty?
I’m not sure which way to go with this one but I think I’ll err on the side of biology:
Dogs have a lot more natural oils on their fur than we do on our human hairs. These oils repel the mucosal exterior of most dog stool. But that’s not universally true. By virtue of their hairy genetics, some dogs have finer, longer, less oily hair (think Maltese). That’s what a groomer’s “sanitary clip” was invented for: clean tails.
A Charm To Bind An Enemy
A CHARM TO BIND AN ENEMY
Cobwebs from your house
Black cloth
Recently dead fly
Paper and pen
Long cord
Gather cobwebs from your house. Place them all a tangle upon a black cloth.
Procure then a fly, recently dead, and set it down upon the mass of webs.
These words should then be written down on paper:
North, South, East, West.
Spider’s web shall bind him best
East, West, North, South
Hold his limbs and stop his mouth
Seal his eyes and choke his breath
Wrap him round with ropes of death.
Fold the paper 4 times and wrap it, the fly and webs in the black cloth, forming a small bag.
This should then be bound up with the end of a long cord and suspended from a hook in a dark corner of the home.
Do not disturb it, but let it hang until it is thickly covered in dust.
Then take down and bury it in the earth to work its influence in perpetual secrecy.
