Elder’s Meditation of the Day – March 17

Elder’s Meditation of the Day – March 17

“By listening to the inner self and following one’s instincts and intuitions, a person may be guided to safety.”

–Dr. A.C. Ross (Ehanamani), LAKOTA

Be still and know. The Medicine Wheel teaches the four directions of inner power-not personal power, but the power of God. These four directions are emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual. As our emotions get too far our of control, we simultaneously create an equivalent mental picture, our physical body fills with stress and tension, and we become spiritually confused. When we experience these uptight feelings, the best thing to do is mentally pause, slow down our thinking, breathe slowly, or pray and ask the spirits to help. Only when we approach the stillness of the mind do we get access to our spiritual guidance system. To be guided, let your mind be still.

Creator, today, let me reside in Your stillness.

The Solitary Road and Personal Power

The Solitary Road and Personal Power

Author:   Crystal Blanton

When I came to this path I had been looking for my spiritual self for some time. A new friend introduced me to Wicca, sparking something in me. I read so much information in such a short period of time my brain was overloaded with various traditions, beliefs, gods, goddesses and a host of other things.

I had a fear of joining a coven yet wanted more. I thought that, without a coven, I would not be able to advance and learn. So many books made references to studying in a coven and listed solitary as if it was a last resort. After much internal debate, speaking with my friend and overcoming the fear, I set out to find a group. And I found one.

Recently, after more than a year of study in this group, I decided to leave for many different reasons.

In reflection of my experience in a coven I have realized that I have learned many things, but not specifically about the Craft. I have learned a lot about group dynamics, honesty, integrity and the ability to trust my own instincts.

My experience in a coven, however, isn’t all negative as it has brought me to my own understanding and feelings about being a solitary practitioner. To be solitary is to trust myself, my knowledge and my judgment. To be solitary means that I am responsible for myself and my own karmic return.

It is the realization that it’s not about how much you know or the right or wrong way to do something. It is about my individual connection to the earth, the universe and the Lord & Lady. It is about what feels right to me and not necessarily how others interpret my spiritual growth.

As I am approaching this place in my journey, I feel empowered in knowing that I have the answers inside of me. It doesn’t matter which degree I have or any of the other aspects I consider to be religious politics. It only matters how I feel about my spiritual connections in my life.

So often we are conditioned to believe that everything in life is in black and white, right or wrong. And, with that ingrained in us, we seek outside people to “show” us for fear that we may do it wrong. What we sometimes fail to understand is that right and wrong is a concept. It is a box of morals and rules that are subject to everyone’s individual interpretations. So, in reality, nothing can be black and white because as humans we are all different shades of grey.

This is not to say that covens, groups or teachers are bad things. I think that everything has its place in my learning experience. But it is to say that, when we as pagans go into the world looking for spiritual leaders and/or covens, we should keep things in perspective.

Everyone holds the power inside themselves. Everyone’s journey is different. Everyone has knowledge inside.

A group should enhance and add to your experience, but it is still your experience. It doesn’t matter if you are sitting in circle alone or with the highest of High Priestesses, your connection with the Divine is a very personal one; a connection that no one else can replace or give you.

As a solitary I am relearning how to celebrate alone. When I began thinking about leaving the group I was in, I had the same fears of going solitary as the fears I had in the beginning of joining a group. It is truly amazing how things go full circle.

As a solitary I have really discovered that my attention needs be focused around my connections with the universe and the spirit and away from structure. The freedom in realizing that I can do whatever feels right to celebrate the Sabbats or Esbats is indescribable. Whether a ritual, feast, meditation, prayer, bike ride or walk outside in the elements, anything can be an act of honoring the Lord and Lady and the turn of the wheel.

Personal power is something that everyone has but is so easily given away. In making a decision to be solitary I have decided to keep mine.

When I first began this path I was afraid to do any magical work without guidance. I celebrated the Sabbats and began meditating but didn’t feel that was enough. I realize that I didn’t have the confidence in my spiritual self but that has changed some in the last 2 years and is continuing to grow more solid everyday.

Once I got that I held the power within myself; rituals, meditations and celebratory activities gained more power. I am finding that the key to feeling power and raising energy as a solitary is confidence. The difference in my personal power today versus a year ago has grown and shows itself in my work.

When exiting the coven I was in, I didn’t exactly understand that. It became apparent to me the minute I did some work as a solitary. “In perfect love and perfect trust” doesn’t just apply in a coven setting. It applies in our relationship with the Lord and Lady, the universe and most importantly within ourselves. I am learning to have perfect love and perfect trust with my spiritual self and my own personal power.

I have a nice group of solitary friends that I hang out with for friendship and spiritual connections. Today when I connect with friends for magical purposes, I come as myself, as my own high priestess. And my journey continues… .

There is this saying that says, “Wherever you go, there you are”. I say that to others in my job on a weekly basis but never applied it to myself.

Whether I am solitary or in a coven, it is my energy, power, knowledge, strength and hope that I take with me. What an empowering thought! I now understand that the power I experienced as a part of the coven was mine.

I am a woman, a mother, a wife, a daughter, a friend, a heart, a human. I am powerful, strong, knowledgeable, spiritual… … … I am a Pagan, I am a Witch, I am a Solitary.

Tools of the Craft

Tools of the Craft

Tools are visual, symbolic aids that posses no power of their own…whatsoever. If you feel no desire to have some, or any tools that are mentioned, don’t get them. For many years, the only tool I used was a candle, and sometimes a pen and paper to write something down to burn. They were just as effective as the ones I do with tools.

How can you do a ritual or spell with no tools? It’s quite simple, by using your personal power. How meaningful, powerful, and effective any ritual or spell is depends entirely on how much energy YOU put into it. Your personal power is the single most important, and only necessary tool you need. Many who are just starting out feel that they have to rush around going bankrupt to get every fancy looking tool they see in order to perform a ritual. They feel that it can’t be done without them or that the tools themselves contain the energy they need. This is simply not true.

The tools you have should be chosen because you are drawn to them or feel that they will enhance your rituals. They are used as vessels to direct YOUR energy. Something to remember when you begin collecting your tools is that they don’t have to be expensive. An athame can be a black handled common kitchen knife (my 1st was a letter opener). Your pentacle can be drawn on a piece of paper like mine is, or carved in wood or clay. I’ve purposely included photos of tools that are bought or made as well as substitutes of all my tools. I did so to show that you shouldn’t feel obligated to have to purchase fancy, expensive ones. I’m an artist/photographer (among other things), and artists are very visual people. It would seem that while I’ve been at this for over 25 years…I need the visual tools or I wouldn’t have bought, found, like the squirrel tail around the top right hand corner of my crowded altar, or been given most of them. They help me, but that doesn’t mean they’ll help you. Only get, or take home from the earth, what (if anything) calls to you. And if you take something from the earth, do something to give thanks. It could be a peanut, water or even a penny for the fairy folk.

Once you have chosen a tool to use for rituals, it should be cleansed and consecrated. Consecration is the act of performing a small ritual in which you declare it as your tool for magickal purposes. After this is done, it should NEVER be used for other purposes. If you use your athame to do a ritual, and then go butter your toast with it, it no longer carries any meaning. Although the tools posses no power of their own, they do carry a special symbolic meaning and your energy. After consecration, they have a purpose and therefor should be only be used for that purpose alone.

There is one tool in The Craft that surpasses all others. Every other tool, no matter how expensive, will be useless with out it. When it comes right down to it..it’s the only tool you need. That tool is YOUR personal power. To enhance your personal power, you need to exercise it. Practice meditation and visualization techniques, and be able to ground and center yourself. No ritual or spell will ever be successful with out personal power, and you can’t gain any without practicing these methods to be able to have control of your thoughts, and crystal clear visualization which is a MANDATORY aspect of any spell or ritual. Don’t make light of the enormous importance of practicing the techniques of meditation, and visualization, on a regular basis.

Daily OM for Oct. 22nd – You Deserve to Have Your Dreams Come True

You Deserve to Have Your Dreams Come True

Personal Power

by Madisyn Taylor

Power is not about exerting our will over others, it is about being in complete truth with yourself.

Many of us have do not understand what personal power means. We have been given the false notion that power is bad—that it is something we use to exert our will upon others. In fact, when our personal power is intact, we are neither overbearing nor meek. We have a clear sense of our strength and the impact we can have on others. This actually enables us to be more sensitive. Personal power is what permits us to work on behalf of our dreams and desires. It allows us to realize that we are worthy and deserve to be heard. In addition, our personal power lets us extend the respect we know that we deserve to the people around us. There is no reason to be afraid or ashamed of fully owning your power.

In the chakra system, the solar plexus is the seat of personal power. One way to evaluate your sense of power is to breathe into this part of the body. If it feels tight or nervous, it is an indication that you may not be fully expressing your power. You can heal this imbalance by expanding the area of the solar plexus with your breath. You can also visualize a bright yellow sun in this part of your body. Allow its heat to melt any tension, and let its light dissolve any darkness or heaviness. Repeating this exercise on a regular basis can restore and rejuvenate your sense of power.

Another way to nurture your personal power is to honor your dreams and desires by making concrete plans to manifest them in the world. Start by making a list of things you want, and let yourself think big. Choose one goal from the list and commit to bringing it to fruition. In addition, break the goal into tasks that you can work on each day. Know that you deserve to have your dreams come true and that you have the power to bring them into being.

Awakening Witches

Awakening Witches

Where to begin? If you are just now starting to awaken, there is so much to learn that it’s mind boggling. I would like to stress here that the information below comes from my own personal beliefs, which have been evolved over many years with input from a huge variety of sources ? some physical, some not ? and my aim is to help other people understand what is going on around them at this time. If you have not yet had the advantage of access to this information, some of it may sound unbelievable to you but please do not dismiss it out of hand just because it is unfamiliar to you. If you are going to form an opinion on whether you believe the information or not, at least let it be an informed opinion. And if you don?t believe the same things I do, that’s fine too ? I don’t expect you would find any two people who believed exactly the same things. I suggest you print this article out and refer to it often while starting your spiritual journey.

1. Keep An Open Mind

Many people start their spiritual quest (as I did many years ago) with an interest in the supernatural and ghosts, then explore spiritualism, witchcraft, tarot, angels, astrology, UFOs, meditation and generally dabble in all different forms of divination, religious and spiritual teachings. This is a great way of learning, and after a while you’ll start to see how the different parts link together as part of a bigger web that incorporates new elements you haven’t yet heard of. As long as your mind is open and receptive your knowledge will continue to grow. Sometimes that also means acknowledging that beliefs that worked for you before, no longer give you answers, comfort or the knowledge you seek. It doesn’t necessarily mean they are wrong, they could be just limited because of antiquity, mis-interpretation, dogma – or just be a smaller part of the bigger picture.

Nothing stays the same in the universe, and by putting all your energies into one area or thinking that the limits of spirituality are contained within that area, you can be missing out on learning so much more. All spiritual pursuits are learning experiences and part of a bigger picture.

2. Keep Your Personal Power

It is very tempting when you feel depressed, lost or alone to want to find someone who will ‘make it all right’ and show you the way to the light. You will always attract the kind of lessons you need to learn, but you need to be able to discern the difference between a Teacher and a Guru (for want of a better expression). It is always wonderful to find someone further along the path from yourself to learn from, but a good Teacher will never insist that their way is the only way. A good teacher will help you on the path to further knowledge and help you to do things for yourself, leaving you personally responsible for your own progress, thoughts and beliefs.

There is obviously more personal responsibility in this – but that is part of what you’re here to learn. Retain your personal power and free will. Learn what you can from a teacher and when you are ready another will cross your path to teach you more. You will also find yourself teaching others who are starting their spiritual journey.

A ‘Guru’ will let you give them your personal power. They will tell you how to think, what to do and how to believe. They enjoy the adulation you give them and won’t ever let you know as much as they appear to, and like to have permanent bands of followers. Most are good people and are just trying to spread a spiritual message. They may not even be aware of the effect they have. By all means learn from them – just remember to keep your personal power and an open mind, learn what you can and move on.

By asking your spirit guides (yes you have them) to help you find knowledge, they will help direct you to people and situations that you can learn from. Also note that not all ‘teachers’ are people. A wonderful book may come your way or you may discover something profound on the internet; a channeled message, direct spiritual contact or even a life-changing experience may be your ‘teacher’.

3. Keep Your Money

Be aware of paying large sums of money for courses unless you’re really sure what they can and can’t offer. While there are a lot of genuine courses around, remember no-one can do it for you. YOU have to put in a personal effort to achieve anything worthwhile. There is no point paying $500 for a meditation course if you don’t have the attention span to meditate to a 30 minute guided tape. There is such a wealth of cheap or free information available to you that you would be wise to explore these options first. $500 can buy a lot of really good books at the new age shop!

An excellent source of help for beginners is your local Spiritual Church. They usually have a very small door fee to cover the tea & bikkies and will introduce you to various spiritual teachings and local mediums and channelers. In addition to the Sunday service, many spiritual churches offer meditation and medium ship groups, healing and channeling evenings and various courses; some even have libraries of books to borrow. Your local spiritualist church is a friendly, enjoyable and cheap way to meet new like-minded friends.

And of course there’s always the internet for great information! Between the Library on this site and the Links to other like-minded sites you should never run out of information.

4. Keep Protected

While you are starting your spiritual journey, it is important to realize that like the physical world, the spiritual world contains beings of various degrees of enlightenment, but with more extremes of good and bad than we have here. I mention this here because many young people write to me asking about using a Ouija Board, which does have the ability to contact various spiritual beings. Many people use the board for quick thrills or ‘to see if it works’. Well, I can tell you it does work and IT IS NOT A TOY. It is a tool which used properly in the right hands can be helpful and enlightening. If used wrongly, it can give you a bad experience that may taint your desire for further spiritual knowledge, and leave you thinking, as many people do, that the board itself is ‘evil’. I do not recommend beginners or children using the board.

5. Universal Laws

KARMA

Witches have a creed: “Do What Thou Will and Harm None”, which is basically the slogan I use on this whole site. A true witch would never do anything to harm another person or being, or to influence their free will because the witch knows that what goes out from you comes back three-fold. This ‘what goes around comes around’, or ‘reap what you sow’ theme is common to many spiritual traditions. You may have heard of it’s Eastern name of Karma. Whatever the creed, theme or name, it is a Universal Law – part of the on-going cycles of life in the universe.

All life forms are connected to each other in a subtle web, so if you do harm to another, it comes back to you. It may be in a different form, it may be immediate or even in a different life but it comes back. Realizing this fact is part of your awakening because you have to take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for your actions. Not only should the enlightened person not start any negative action, but harder still is not perpetuating actions that are already in progress. I’ll give you an example:-

Not starting any negative actions: Your ex-boyfriend is going out with someone new. A bad thing to do would be casting spells to bring him back or making his new love have an accident. Whether or not anything physically happened, your negative intent is enough to set up bad vibes that will make their way back to you. What you would also be doing is lowering your own vibrational rate with your negative emotions. When you become more enlightened you will see clearly that most relationships are temporary and that you came together at a certain time to learn something from that person – and about yourself. Look at what you learned from the relationship, then let it go with love. Then your heart will be free to attract a new love.

Not perpetuating negative actions: Someone does something nastily or hurtful to you. You think you are justified in returning the hurt because ‘they started it’. That may not be the case. You may well have done something to hurt them that you’re not conscious of, or even in a previous life, in which case you are now even and the karmic cycle has finished. By seeking revenge you would be staring a new karmic cycle of bad vibes. If the other person has just started a new bad cycle, then if you don’t perpetuate it, the bad vibes will just go back to them – what goes around comes around. Again, look at what you’ve learned and let them go with love.

This ‘turning the other cheek’ is hard at first but after a while, you will find yourself becoming more calm, enlightened, loving – and lucky – because you aren’t constantly bringing bad vibes on yourself.

Also, don’t forget that you don’t have to wait to react to bad vibes. You can send out good vibes any time you like and find that good things start to happen to you. Try sending love and light to someone who doesn’t like you and see what a difference it makes!

LIKE ATTRACTS LIKE

This law is also very important. Have you ever wondered why the same sort of people all hang out together? It’s usually because they are all vibrating at about the same rate. When you say such-and-such is ‘on a different wavelength’ you are probably right.

One of the difficult things about starting a spiritual journey is finding you have less and less in common with partners, friends and family. It’s nice when they take an interest, or are at least open-minded about what you’re learning but sometimes people are so afraid of what they don’t understand that they can even become hostile to it. If this happens try letting them read some material or meet your new friends – they may just be concerned for your welfare or worry that you’ve joined a cult! Also try sending them white light from your heart to strengthen the relationship. As a last resort will you may need to cut the ties and let them go with love.

One of the positive things you will find is that you will attract new friends who are interested in the same things you are. These friendships too may come and go because everyone is growing at a different rate and people attract to each other while they are on the same ‘wavelength’ and drift apart when the wavelength alters. The more people you come into contact with, the more you will learn.

This phenomenon is not limited to the physical realm. On other planes of reality there are also corresponding vibrational rates to your own. People who are going through spiritual growth find they attract new spiritual guides and teachers to help lead them on their journey.

The important thing to remember with these universal laws is that the more genuine love that you send out – the more comes back to you – your vibrational rate rises and you attract more love and enlightened beings to help and teach you. You gradually rid yourself of negative karma and increase your knowledge and skills that can be used to help others and another wonderful cycle begins. Of course a downward cycle is also possible where you attract more negativity to yourself and think the whole world hates you, but now that you are armed with all the information in this article you won’t let this happen will you?!!!

Now take a deep breath, fill yourself full of white light and warm love…
