A Double Lunar Analemma over Turkey

Image Credit & Copyright: Betul Turksoy

Explanation: An analemma is that figure-8 curve you get when you mark the position of the Sun at the same time each day for one year. But the trick to imaging an analemma of the Moon is to wait bit longer. On average the Moon returns to the same position in the sky about 50 minutes and 29 seconds later each day. So photograph the Moon 50 minutes 29 seconds later on successive days. Over one lunation or lunar month it will trace out an analemma-like curve as the Moon’s actual position wanders due to its tilted and elliptical orbit. Since the featured image was taken over two months, it actually shows a double lunar analemma. Crescent lunar phases too thin and faint to capture around the New moon are missing. The two months the persistent astrophotographer chose were during a good stretch of weather during July and August, and the location was KayseriTurkey

Auroras over Northern Canada

Image Credit & Copyright: Kwon, O Chul (TWAN)

Explanation: Gusting solar winds and blasts of charged particles from the Sun resulted in several rewarding nights of auroras back in 2014 December, near the peak of the last 11-year solar cycle. The featured image captured dramatic auroras stretching across a sky near the town of Yellowknife in northern Canada. The auroras were so bright that they not only inspired awe, but were easily visible on an image exposure of only 1.3 seconds. A video taken concurrently shows the dancing sky lights evolving in real time as tourists, many there just to see auroras, respond with cheers. The conical dwellings on the image right are tipis, while far in the background, near the image center, is the constellation of Orion. Auroras may increase again over the next few years as our Sun again approaches solar maximum.

Equinox Sunrise Around the World

Collage Image Copyright: Luca Vanzella

Explanation: A planet-wide collaboration resulted in this remarkable array of sunrise photographs taken around the September 2022 equinox. The images were contributed by 24 photographers, one in each of 24 nautical time zones around the world. Unlike more complicated civil time zone boundaries, the 24 nautical time zones are simply 15 degree longitude bands corresponding to 1 hour steps that span the globe. Start at the upper right for the first to experience a sunrise in the nautical time zone corresponding to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) + 12 hours. In that time zone, the photographer was located in Christchurch, New Zealand. Travel to the west by looking down the column and then moving to the column toward the left for later sunrises as the time zone offset in hours from UTC decreases. Or, you can watch a video of September 2022 equinox sunrises around planet Earth.

The Horsehead Nebula Region without Stars

Image Credit & Copyright: George Chatzifrantzis

Explanation: The famous Horsehead Nebula in Orion is not alone. A deep exposure shows that the dark familiar shaped indentation, visible just right of center, is part of a vast complex of absorbing dust and glowing gas. The featured spectacular picture details an intricate tapestry of gaseous wisps and dust-laden filaments that were created and sculpted over eons by stellar winds and ancient supernovas. The Flame Nebula is visible in orange just to the Horsehead’s left. To highlight the dust and gas, most of the stars have been digitally removed, although a notable exception is Alnitak, just above the Flame Nebula, which is the rightmost star in Orion’s famous belt of three aligned stars. The Horsehead Nebula lies 1,500 light years distant towards the constellation of Orion.

Moon Alert

Avoid shopping or important decisions from 7 AM to 1 PM EDT today (4 AM to 10 AM PDT). After that, the Moon moves from Scorpio into Sagittarius.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

A much better day! Invite friends and family over so you can entertain at home today. Actually, you will enjoy doing something to improve your digs and perhaps show off what you’ve done to others? (You are very clever and creative.) A mellow day.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Relations with others are much happier today; nevertheless, fiery Mars is still in your sign making you aggressive and assertive when talking to others. Continue to focus on parents and domestic matters. Playful activities with kids will delight. Be ready to go more than halfway when dealing with others today.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Be aware of the restrictions of the Moon Alert (see above) because today you’re in the mood to spend money! In particular, you want to buy luxurious, beautiful items. (Keep your receipts – and the box.) Some of you will boost your income.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This is a pleasant, easy-going day dealing with others. In particular, you will enjoy the arts, entertaining diversions, sports events with a family and fun, social times. You find it easy to be charming and diplomatic with everyone. (Kiss, kiss, hug, hug.)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

You have been busy because the Sun is in your sign, which empowers you. This attracts people and favourable situations to you. Nevertheless, today, you might want to take a breather and relax in beautiful surroundings. Enjoy the beauty of your home or a private hideaway.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Relations with friends and groups will be warm and mutually sympathetic today because people are friendly and genuinely interested in each other. Furthermore, a friend might be sympathetic to you and have advice, especially about dealing with clubs or organizations. (A friend might become a lover.)

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You look wonderful in the eyes of others today, which is why some of you might impress bosses and people in power. (In fact, some of you might strike up a romance with a boss.) Very likely, you will use your influence either personally or through a third-party to benefit someone in need.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Today you feel mellow and favourably disposed to others, which is why it will be easy for you to along with everyone. (In fact, the day begins with the Moon in your sign.) It’s the perfect time to discuss travel plans and creative, artistic projects. (Check Moon Alert.)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

After the Moon Alert today, the Moon moves into your sign, which gives you a bit of good luck over all the other signs. You can test this by asking the universe for a favour. Indeed, gifts, goodies and advantages can come your way today. (Keep your pockets open!)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You will enjoy warm conversations with partners, close friends and groups today, which is why this is a great day to schmooze and be active in clubs and organizations. However, during the Moon Alert (see above) do not volunteer for anything. Wait until the alert is over.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You are high viz. today. People notice you more than usual and in fact, they might be discussing personal details about your private life. (Like, what’s with that?) Your interactions with coworkers will be warm and supportive today.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

You have strong feelings of escapism today. This is why you want to “get away from all this.” Obviously, if you can travel, by all means do so. However, if you are making travel plans, wait until the Moon Alert is over.

If Your Birthday Is Today

Actress Michelle Yeoh (1962) shares your birthday today. You are intelligent and multitalented, as well as compassionate and benevolent to others. You are pragmatic and have the ability to fit in with all walks of life. This is a quieter, gentler year, in part because your main focus is on your closest relationships (friends, partners or spouses). Trust your intuition.

August 6, 2022 Current Moon Phase Digest

You can use this link to go forward or backward in time for Moon phase information. If you are curious, you can even find out what phase the Moon was in when you or anyone else was born.

From MoonGiant.com

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waxing Gibbous phase. This phase is when the moon is more than 50% illuminated but not yet a Full Moon. The phase lasts about 7 days with the moon becoming more illuminated each day until the Full Moon. During a Waxing Gibbous the moon rises in the east in mid-afternoon and is high in the eastern sky at sunset. The moon is then visible through most of the night sky setting a few hours before sunrise. The word Gibbous first appeared in the 14th century and has its roots in the Latin word “gibbosus” meaning humpbacked.

Visit the August 2022 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.

Today’s Waxing Gibbous Phase

The Waxing Gibbous on August 6 has an illumination of 62%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On August 6 the Moon is 8.48 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

The 8 Lunar Phases

There are 8 lunar phases the Moon goes through in its 29.53 days lunar cycle. The 4 major Moon phases are Full Moon, New Moon, First Quarter and Last Quarter. Between these major phases, there are 4 minor ones: the Waxing Crescent, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous and Waning Crescent. For more info on the Moon Cycle and on each phase check out Wikipedia Lunar Phase page.
