You can use this link to go forward or backward in time for Moon phase information. If you are curious, you can even find out what phase the Moon was in when you or anyone else was born.
The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waxing Crescent Phase. A Waxing Crescent is the first Phase after the New Moon and is a great time to see the features of the moon’s surface. During this phase the Moon can be seen in the wester sky after the sun dips below the horizon at sunset. The moon is close to the sun in the sky and mostly dark except for the right edge of the moon which becomes brighter as the days get closer to the next phase which is a First Quarter with a 50% illumination.
Visit the May 2022 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.
The Waxing Crescent on May 3 has an illumination of 7%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On May 3 the Moon is 2.44 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.
There are 8 lunar phases the Moon goes through in its 29.53 days lunar cycle. The 4 major Moon phases are Full Moon, New Moon, First Quarter and Last Quarter. Between these major phases, there are 4 minor ones: the Waxing Crescent, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous and Waning Crescent. For more info on the Moon Cycle and on each phase check out Wikipedia Lunar Phase page.

Wynken, Blynken and Nod sail away,
Bringing me rest at the end of the day.
I close my eyes, then sweet dreams will come.
Sleep through the night, to slumber I succumb.

2022 May 3

Explanation: That’s no comet. Below the Pleiades star cluster is actually a planet: Mercury. Long exposures of our Solar System’s innermost planet may reveal something unexpected: a tail. Mercury‘s thin atmosphere contains small amounts of sodium that glow when excited by light from the Sun. Sunlight also liberates these molecules from Mercury’s surface and pushes them away. The yellow glow from sodium, in particular, is relatively bright. Pictured, Mercury and its sodium tail are visible in a deep image taken last week from La Palma, Spain through a filter that primarily transmits yellow light emitted by sodium. First predicted in the 1980s, Mercury’s tail was first discovered in 2001. Many tail details were revealed in multiple observations by NASA‘s robotic MESSENGER spacecraft that orbited Mercury between 2011 and 2015. Tails, of course, are usually associated with comets.

The end of a month doesn’t necessarily mean the end of a retrograde cycle. The planetary retrogrades that began in April 2022 prove it, considering there was only one and it began at practically the tail end of the month, and will continue through the summer and even part of the fall months. That means you’re guaranteed to find at least one retrograde planet in the month of May 2022, and I’m telling you right now, there’s more where that came from.
There will actually be two planetary retrogrades in May: Pluto retrograde, which began on April 29, and the infamous Mercury retrograde, which isn’t too far behind. But, while the term “retrograde” can cause plenty of distress — i.e. flashbacks to disagreements or falling-outs among loved ones — the reality is that retrogrades are far more common than you may realize. Take Mercury retrograde, for example — this event typically happens about three times every year (though, in 2022, there will be four Mercury retrograde cycles), and you’ve survived them each and every time, so there’s nothing to be afraid of. Think of all the mishaps you experience during those seasons as minor inconveniences.
Pluto retrogrades — like the one you’re experiencing right now — are less noticeable than Mercury retrogrades, but they do signify a period of review, so you should still pay attention. My advice: Take a look at the house in your birth chart Pluto’s currently transiting in, which is currently the cardinal earth sign of Capricorn, and revise. Pluto stations retrograde annually for about six months, so it typically takes a bit longer to know how the retrograde will affect you.
Mercury retrograde, on the other hand, lasts about three weeks, making the effects much more acute during that period — and sometimes even before and/or after the planet actually stations, known as the shadow phase.
Starting off in the mutable air sign of Gemini and ending in the fixed earth sign of Taurus, Mercury will be inclined to bring active thoughts and ideas down to Earth during this period. During the first half of the retrograde, Mercury will be incredibly supported in Gemini, since this is a sign all about mental stimulation and communication. But retrograde, you will likely notice a difficulty effectively sharing and implementing these ideas until Mercury steps back into the stable sign of Taurus on May 22. By this time, the ideas that you’ve come up with during the retrograde will be solidified and secured, so it’ll be important to make as many necessary changes and adjustments to your endeavors before Mercury’s less willing to budge in Taurus. Taurus is definitely a sign that likes to maintain things, so you’ll likely notice things really start to slow down once Mercury makes its way back into this sign.
During this retrograde, it’ll be important to consider where Taurus and Gemini fall in your birth chart, since these are the two astrological houses that will be experiencing the action as Mercury moves back and forth between these signs. These houses will be prone to revisions and reorganizations from May 10 until June 3, so if things feel a bit scattered here during this time, you can be sure to blame it on the stars — especially if you have planets in these two signs.

The Full Moon for this month will occur in the second week on Monday, May 16th. The New Moon will happen later in May on Monday, May 30th.
May is most notable for being the turning point in the year where temperatures rise and a vast variety of flowers come into full bloom, letting the world break out into a riot of color. As such, May’s full moon has come to be known as the Full Flower Moon. The Anishnaabe tribe also called it the Blossom Moon. In Northern America, you can expect to see flowers such as bluebells, sundrops, violets, and so on, as well as lush greenery to go with the blossoms. The Apache and Lakota peoples named May’s full moon the Green Leaves Moon, while the Mohawk tribe called it the Big Leaf Moon. But there is one specific plant that’s very important during the May season – and it is, in fact, not a flower.
This plant is corn, an important staple food for Northern American peoples. According to the Algonquin tribes, May’s full moon is the Corn Planting Moon. For Native American tribes, this is the perfect time for them to start preparing the fields for farming and sowing the seeds saved up from last year. Appropriately, the Abenaki culture refers to May’s full moon as the Field Maker Moon, while the Haida tribe calls it the Food Gathering Moon. Apart from corn, other foods such as beans, squash, and potatoes are planted during this time. The Cherokee tribe called May’s full moon the Anisguti Moon, or the Planting Moon, and would traditionally perform a Corn Dance during this period to encourage a fruitful corn harvest.
Due to the rising temperatures, the Full Flower Moon is also a time of heightened fertility. This is a good time for women to bear children in a warm, safe environment that would increase the chance of their survival. That’s why May’s full moon is also named Mother’s Moon, or Milk Moon, which could refer to breastfeeding or to the milking of cows. The latter interpretation is based off the Old English name Rimilcemona, or the Month of Three Milkings, referring to how this was a period where cows could be milked up to three times daily.
In other parts of the world, the Full Flower Moon is better known as Vesak or Buddha Day, the most significant celebration for Buddhists all around the world. On the first full moon of May, Buddhists commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. Devout practitioners are encouraged to renew their intention to adhere to sacred Buddhist principles, as well as refrain from all forms of killing and violence, including eating meat. Celebrations include giving charity to the poor, disabled, and otherwise marginalized groups in society. Depending on your location, you may witness the spectacular practice of releasing thousands of caged birds into the air as a symbolic gesture of liberation, though this tradition is illegal in countries such as Singapore because it may cause harm to local ecosystems.
Pagans, on the other hand, associate the Full Flower Moon with the element of fire, and thus often celebrate it by lighting bonfires and engaging in other magical fire rituals to bring prosperity. Powerful colors for the Full Flower Moon include fiery colors like red, yellow, and orange. This is a good time to tend your garden and let the seeds you’ve planted blossom – both literally and metaphorically. Cultivate your passions and desires, encourage them to burst forth into bloom, and you will be rewarded with abundance in various forms in your life.

Our month-by-month guide to locating the planets throughout 2022.
Finding and observing the planets of the Solar System in the night sky isn’t as tricky as you think. You just need to know where to look.
When a planet is in a particularly favourable position in the evening or morning sky, it will look like a bright ‘star’, the most obvious point of light visible to the naked eye.
The other thing about spotting the planets in the night sky is that they can also be found along the ecliptic, which is the imaginary line that the Sun appears to traverse in the sky over the course of a day.
Since the major planets of the Solar System orbit the Sun in about the same plane, the ecliptic also marks the path of the planets.
Is it bright, but on the wrong side of the sky to the ecliptic? Then it’s not a planet.
For more advice, read our guide on how to find planets in the night sky.
Once you’ve got to grips with this, all you need to know is what planets will be visible in the night each month, so you know what to look out for, and what dates they will be best placed.
This is where our guide below comes in. Use it throughout the coming 12 months to find out which planets are visible in the night sky in 2022, which are at opposition, and to keep track of any interesting upcoming conjunctions.
Check our Astronomy Advice section throughout the year for more up-to-date stargazing tips, and sign up to the BBC Sky at Night Magazine e-newsletter for lunar phases and monthly astronomy highlights delivered direct to your email inbox.

Venus: Morning planet, near Jupiter on 1 May. 10%-lit waning crescent Moon nearby on 27 May.
Mars: Morning planet. Close encounter with Jupiter at end of May.

Jupiter: Morning planet, near Venus on 1 May and Mars on 29 May. Waning Moon nearby on 25 May.
Saturn: Low altitude morning object. Waning gibbous Moon on 22 May.
Uranus: Uranus lines up with the Sun on 5 May and not visible this month.

2022 May 2

Explanation: What’s happened to the Sun? Two days ago, parts of South America were treated to a partial solar eclipse — where the Moon blocked out part of the Sun. The featured image shows an image of the partially eclipsed Sun through clouds as it was setting over Patagonia, Argentina. In the tilted image, Earth is toward the right. During the eclipse, the Moon moved partly between Earth and the Sun. Although a visually impressive sight, the slight dimming of surroundings during this partial eclipse was less noticeable than dimming created by a thick cloud. In about two weeks, all of South America and part of North America will experience a total lunar eclipse — where the Earth moves completely between the Moon and the Sun. In about two years, a total solar eclipse will cross North America.

You can use this link to go forward or backward in time for Moon phase information. If you are curious, you can even find out what phase the Moon was in when you or anyone else was born.
Today and tonight the Moon will be in a Waxing Crescent Phase.
The Waxing Crescent on May 2 has an illumination of 3%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On May 2 the Moon is 1.53 days old.

Explanation: What does a black hole look like? To find out, radio telescopes from around the Earth coordinated observations of black holes with the largest known event horizons on the sky. Alone, black holes are just black, but these monster attractors are known to be surrounded by glowing gas. This first image resolves the area around the black hole at the center of galaxy M87 on a scale below that expected for its event horizon. Pictured, the dark central region is not the event horizon, but rather the black hole’s shadow — the central region of emitting gas darkened by the central black hole’s gravity. The size and shape of the shadow is determined by bright gas near the event horizon, by strong gravitational lensing deflections, and by the black hole’s spin. In resolving this black hole’s shadow, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) bolstered evidence that Einstein’s gravity works even in extreme regions, and gave clear evidence that M87 has a central spinning black hole of about 6 billion solar masses. Since releasing this featured image in 2019, the EHT has expanded to include more telescopes, observe more black holes, track polarized light, and is working to observe the immediately vicinity of the black hole in the center of our Milky Way Galaxy.
