It’s ‘Labor Day’ already — where did the summer go? If you’re traveling this holiday weekend then you might appreciate the next few drive-time tips aimed at bringing peace to time spent behind the wheel. This modality is called Feng Che, a cousin to the more widely known Feng Shui. Feng Che takes an opportunity to steer you to where you are headed with health, happiness and prosperity as backseat drivers. Feng Che (or Car Shui, as I like to call it) has some dictates that will help to keep negative energy from driving your mood. First, never leave clutter in the car. Treat the inside of the car as you would your home and realize that clutter can lead to the same sort of ‘ill Chi’ in your car as it does in any other space. It’s most essential that the center of the car remain clean and clear. This single space relates to the health of all those in the car. That’s enough of a reason to make sure that energies are smooth and flowing, just like the ride! Lastly, adding ten drops of lemon essential oil to an atomizer bottle filled with spring water and spritzing the inside of the car will help dispel odors and bring a bright citrus scent to your travel experience. Following any of these Feng Che guidelines will add another passenger to your trip, the one called peace.

Today celebrates the anniversary of the day that Emma M. Nutt began her thirty-three year career as the first female telephone operator. So it’s no surprise the today’s energies circulate around using your phone to your best benefit. Enact the following cure if you’d like your phone to start ringing with fortune, luck and exciting opportunities. Place your phone’s base/charger on a round or octagonal mirror that is slightly larger than the base itself. This mirror should be sitting on a piece of red cloth that is cut to the same shape and size as the mirror. Underneath the phone, place an image of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals in a circular design (you can download that image from any internet search engine). If you want a bigger bang then you might also tie nine pieces of nine-inch long ribbons on the cord of the phone or the cord that is plugged into the electrical outlet. You can even tie these ribbons on the cord that comes from the jack to the base of the phone. Either way, this powerful Feng Shui adjustment calls money, recognition and reward right to you, so get ready to answer!

Let’s give kitty equal consideration on today’s ‘National Holistic Pet Day.’ If you have a cat who uses all the wood in your home as their personal scratching post, then put a pinch of chili sauce there. The smell of the spice will keep the cat away while your Feng Shui Fortune Mouse plays. You need only to rub a little of the sauce on the wood and then buff it off in order to keep cats away. If you have an older male cat who is experiencing urinary problems (always consult your vet in regard to any pet advice), treat this problem holistically by adding one teaspoon of white vinegar to the cat’s water. This will help to prevent the formation of stones and potentially high cost remedies and treatments. Likewise, a diet of low-ash cat food also helps this urinary agenda. Alternative advice also says that mothballs should be put between cushions to keep the cat off the couch. Lastly, if your cat comes home with a few scratches to show for his night out, then clean the wounds with warm water before breaking open a Vitamin E capsule and squeezing the oil directly onto the affected area. Just add more if the cat licks the oil off — it can’t hurt him. Go ahead and try these tips as I think they’re the cat’s meow!

You’ll want to tune into today’s ‘Race Your Mouse Day’ energies if your intention is to be the ‘big cheese.’ This day probably has more to do with the little computer device than with a tiny rodent, but we can address both, starting with the computer. Feng Shui advises hanging a round and faceted clear quartz crystal from either nine, 18 or 27 inches of red string, thread or ribbon directly above your computer. This ancient technique addresses modern day technology by inviting invisible energies to keep your thoughts crystal clear and your hard drive safe and sound. If you thought that today’s mouse is of the furry variety, read on. In Eastern traditions the mouse (and rat) is always associated with intelligence, longevity, luck and money. Mice and rats are also said to bring children better grades and a brighter mentality. And letting a mouse hang around sure hasn’t hurt Disney’s bottom line. If you’re looking to trap some quick cash of your own, or even trying to dig out of debt, place an image of the ‘Feng Shui Fortune Rat’ in the ‘Wealth’ area of the main floor of your home. Of all the fast-acting prosperity cures, this one serves both mice and men!

Feng Shui, means literally “the way of wind and water,” or symbolically, “the natural forces of the Universe.” These forces affect everything in our world. Europeans call the science of Feng Shui geomancy. Hawaiians and Native Americans practice their own form of Feng Shui, each seeking to live harmoniously with nature. The ancient Chinese believed in and lived their lives by these natural forces. One of the strongest and oldest natural forces is call “chi.”
Chi, also known as the breath of nature or as “the dragon’s celestial breath,” is everywhere and, many believe, represents the truest abstract energy in the Universe. Chi is an invisible energy that circulates everywhere but gathers in certain places, which are said to be good in Feng Shui. Chi enhances happiness, prosperity and longevity, and it is the life force inside all living things. Good relationships, a healthful lifestyle and meditation can increase levels of chi energy.
In Feng Shui, winds are sometimes thought of as bad because they scatter chi, rather than accumulate it. When selecting a place to build a home or to hold a ritual, avoid places that are windswept. This can be hard if you live on the prairie or beside the ocean, but in those cases, just try to schedule your rituals on days when the wind is calmer. If you have a home where it’s windy, you might want to perform a weekly ritual to encourage the sylphs to leave chi where they found it.
It’s another of those days that I hold dear to my heart. Today’s ‘Global Forgiveness Day’ is a time to bury the hatchet and forgive. But if you’re having trouble putting the past behind you and can’t say anything positive to someone who has hurt you, then try an old remedy that I know works like a charm. Take any small, lidded jar and remove the lid. On a piece of white paper in green ink write the name of the offending party, fold the paper to fit into the jar, and cover it with just enough honey to submerge it. Tightly seal the jar and place it somewhere in your kitchen. Each day, for nine consecutive days, place a small white candle atop the jar and light it. Allow the candle to burn for a few minutes while you see this whole situation sweetening. After the ninth day the candle should be fully burned (if it has already burned out, replace with a fresh one until the nine days are done). Then put the jar in a paper bag and dispose of it somewhere outside of your house. Not only should the hostility and harsh feelings all become a thing of the past, but your pain should do the same.

On this ‘Chinese Valentine’s Day’ I thought I’d offer a few cures with one fortunate flower. Feng Shui says that there are some adjustments that are specific to certain individuals, perhaps a daughter. If you have a daughter of marrying age who is looking to find the perfect partner, then pick the perfect floral to help her do just that. Feng Shui says you should place two fresh pink peonies in the ‘Romance’ area of a young girl’s room in order to plant the intention of happily ever after into her love life. If you can’t find fresh peonies then simply position a picture or image of them in her room. If you are an older female looking for love, create your perfect garden by placing a picture of peonies outside your bedroom to the left of the room as you look in. Hang it on a wall or place the peonies there in a vase on a small stand. If you’re already married and you want to enhance your existing relationship, put the peonies in the ‘Relationship and Romance’ area of your main floor. Never position them in your bedroom as this is said to cause your partner to develop a roving eye. Truthfully, though, this pink peony cure works best with younger ladies, like your daughter.

Today’s ‘National Radio Day’ energies are music to my ears. I once learned a Feng Shui cure that entailed positioning a radio in the ‘Children/Creativity’ area of your main floor. This cure maintained that if you tune to a radio station that plays the music that you most love to dance to, you could reap beneficial health and happiness rewards. So, today place a radio in that same ‘Children/Creativity’ location and tune it to a station that that gets you jumping and jiving. Spend a few minutes letting go of all your worries and woes and just groove to the music and then see how much better you feel. This adjustment is said to lower blood pressure while oxygenating the blood and lifting your mood. An all-purpose panacea that brings balance to the dance!

Today’s energies are vintage since this is ‘National Thrift Shop Day.’ Feng Shui believes that energy is an actual ‘thing’ that can invisibly stick around long after the breath that gave it life has moved on. So while they are considered treasures to some, vintage items and antiques carry with them ‘predecessor energy.’ This same energy can bring negativity from previous owners into your home. It’s fine to own vintage items, but not before ringing a bell over them nine times. If you’ve found something unique and you have no idea where it came from, it needs to be cleansed. Previously owned items were around other people’s energies and those energies stick. If you don’t want to get unintentionally stuck yourself then you’re well advised to burn an incense stick or sage leaves, letting the smoke surround the vintage stuff. This is a fast and easy way to cleanse them of their own past so that you can both start fresh!

Kathleen, are you reading this? Because I am dedicating today’s energies to you! That means that I will be sending you a small statue of a Buddha so that you can enjoy an atmosphere of serenity, joy and contentment, since these are all the qualities that you bring to my life. Buddha will remind you not to work too hard and to embrace all the opportunities and blessings that he will bring to your life, especially when placed facing your front entryway door. Positioned in that way, the Buddha can invite and then welcome health, happiness, love and prosperity into your life, which is all that I could ever wish for such a wonderful, loving and best friend!

‘National Navajo Code Talkers Day’ honors Native American Marines who created and cracked code-talking for the allies during World War II. But the Navajo were not the only bilingual speakers specially recruited to transmit critical messages built upon their native languages, as the Choctaw, Cherokee, Lakota, Meskwaki and Comanche also contributed to these efforts. But before there were code talkers, American Indians often communicated amongst tribes by using smoke signals. In fact, using smoke to cleanse has played an integral role in almost every culture. This method stands the test of time because it does an amazing job of banishing negative energies while inviting new and fortune-filled ones into your space. Cleanse with smoke when you first move into a new space or when an important relationship ends. Clear your space after an illness is over or when someone or something unpleasant has sapped your energies and time. Light incense or a small dried sage leaf so the flame burns and then blow it out until the leaf is smoky and smoldering. Waft the smoke in all directions in order to cover global concerns and then let it burn out. This really does relinquish the negative while opening the door to the successful and new. Repeating the magical Feng Shui mantra of ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ will facilitate immediate release of obstacles while also enlisting the aid of stunning opportunities. That’s not just jive talking either — that’s code for success!

What better day than ‘IBM PC Day’ to talk about alternative ways of ensuring that your PC doesn’t crash? Feng Shui says that hanging a clear and faceted quartz crystal over the top of your computer will not only keep it running smoothly but will also make sure that you do the same. This philosophy says that doing so will also enhance your own clarity of mind and your decision-making processes. For full effect, hang the crystal with a red ribbon cut into multiple of nine inches in length. As you put this crystal into place, visualize all the facets inherent opening your mind to new dimensions of understanding while also seeing distractions and negative thoughts being swept away. This very basic but very powerful Feng Shui cure also promises to protect you from ailing Chi while encouraging you to have a brighter outlook for your future — and that of your precious PC too!

I can really wrap my beach blanket around today’s ‘Lazy Day.’ And if you too want to veg out and restore your soul, this would be the best day to do exactly that! But also be sure to end the day by taking this stress-reducing bath. Add one tablespoon of sesame oil to bath water and place two tablespoons of uncooked rice and one chopped, unpeeled, raw potato in some sort of net. Suspend the net into the water and then get in. Close your eyes and concentrate on the area at the end of your coccyx, all the while massaging the soles of your feet. Do this for a few minutes and let your stress and cares soak away! As worries and woes circle down the drain you’ll feel your energy returning along with your enthusiasm and optimism! Now that’s a productive lazy day!

On this ‘National Lighthouse Day’ I’m feeling brighter and more illuminated. I love visiting lighthouses, and apparently I’m not alone since recent travel research shows that lighthouses continue to be a hot destination spot. I also love the idea of a beacon guiding sailors back to safe harbor. A friend in times of need, this light would shine a path, no matter how heavy the weather or dark the night. Feng Shui states that this is the same idea behind leaving your outside front entryway light on. This modality believes that fire and light can garner the blessings of the invisible while also activating energetic sources of success-fueled opportunities. Illuminating this intention simply warrants the empowering step of flipping that switch. If you want to light up the night or engage opportunistic energies to fill each day, then simply leave your front light burning for at least three consecutive hours each day or night. When turning on this light it’s important that you think about your intentions and goals. After switching the light off, be sure to let it rest before turning it on again at another time. This brings new meaning to the word ‘lighthouse.’

According to Feng Shui there are auspicious places and optimal times to align flower energies with our own in order to bring a bloom and some growth into our lives. In August the pear blossom acts as a bridge to heaven luck, and it is believed to have a language all its own. In fact, the language of flowers, also called floriography, was often used (especially during the Victorian era) as a means of communications that would allow individuals to express emotions and feelings that might have otherwise gone unspoken. The pear blossom is believed to bring lasting friendship and they’ve been referenced in Eastern poetry as a symbol of hope and longevity. The pear blossom is a flower of the pear tree, long a traditional Chinese symbol of long life and so it’s said that to partake of a pear with this intent in mind will keep you sharp and intact for years to come!

It makes sense that during the dog days of summer we would come upon ‘Mutt Day.’ So I thought about all the different dictates involving dogs and the world of Feng Shui. First, this philosophy says the best way to garner the best protection is to place a pair of Fu dogs flanking the formal front entryway to your living space. Fu dogs, or Imperial Guardian Lions, are one of the strongest protection symbols in this pantheon and are believed to bring family wealth and social status while keeping bad luck at bay. Feng Shui also says that if you see a limping dog while embarking on any journey that you should cancel your plans and start out again at some other time. This image of a limping dog portends problems and obstacles along your way, and even could predict accidents, illnesses or injury. Lastly, Feng Shui says that a stray dog can bring good fortune and luck along with it. So the next time some random dog makes their way into your life, you know what to name it right? Why, Lucky, of course!

Water lilies and sweet pea are the two plants most associated with the month of July. The water lily is akin to the Eastern symbol of the lotus; the most beautiful of flowers that begins its journey heavenward while still being rooted in the earth. Water lilies have a long lore associated with spirituality and religion. The Christian Church sometimes depicts the Archangel Gabriel bringing glad tidings of water lilies to the Virgin Mary. The offering of these flowers signifies fire and water, and this idea of creation/generation has survived through the ages. Complimenting the idea of being rooted in the earth while reaching for the sun is the iconography concerning the sweet pea. This plant strives to teach us all that we can be a socially connected ‘climber’ while still stirring a strong sense of community. This plant also engenders a sense of our own individual and powerful place on the planet. If you ever feel like you’re wandering and you can’t seem to find your place in this world, a few drops of sweet pea flower essence remedy under the tongue a few times a day (for at least a dozen days) will bring you back to balance, and you’ll soon feel rooted again. The essences and energies of both of these plants allow you to reach for the stars while keeping your feet on the ground.

I think I see a connection between ‘Gorgeous Grandma Day’ and ‘Hot Enough For Ya Day.’ One way to stay young at heart is to install longevity symbols, so why not heat up that promise and attract some wealth, health, love and a natural death that occurs at a ripe old age? That’s exactly what a grouping of five bats symbolizes in Feng Shui. This philosophy also says that five bats is a yang symbol of prosperity, recognition and rewards. In ancient China, bats were an auspicious symbol of abundance. In fact, in Chinese the bat is named ‘pin fook,’ which also means happiness and prosperity. Assembled in a cluster of five, this symbol then represents the ‘five blessings’ or aspirations that every person wants to attain. If you want to be a hot and gorgeous grandma or a really rich and happy grandpa then download an image of the Feng Shui ‘five red bats’ and put it anywhere in the center of your living space. Instead of people thinking that you have bats in your belfry, they’ll wonder why you look so darn hot!
