Planets Over Egyptian Pyramid

Image Credit & Copyright: Osama Fatehi

Explanation: The early morning planet parade continues. Visible the world over, the planets Jupiter, Venus, Mars and Saturn have been lining up in the pre-dawn sky since mid-April. In the featured image taken last month, these planets were captured over the Step Pyramid of Djoser, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the Saqqara necropolis of Egypt, the pyramid was constructed in the 27th century BC and is one of the oldest pyramids known. The two-image composite includes a foreground image taken during evening blue hour, and a background image captured from the same location the following morning. The morning planet line-up is slowly changing. At the end of last month, planets Jupiter and Venus switched places, while at the end of this month, Jupiter and Mars will switch after passing within one-degree of each other. Of course, this picturesque planetary angular alignment is a coincidence, as all of these worlds continue to orbit the Sun as they have for billions of years, well before even the ancient Pyramid of Djoser was built.

Anthropologist Believes Ancient Human Species Could Still Be Alive In The Forests Of Flores Island

In 2003, archaeologists looking for evidence of the migration of modern humans from Asia to Australia stumbled across a small, fairly complete skeleton of an extinct human species on the Indonesian island of Flores, which came to be known as Homo floresiensis. Or, as it became more commonly known, the Hobbit, after the small, breakfast-guzzling creatures from J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Hobbit.

The species was initially thought to have survived until relatively recently, around 12,000 years ago, before further analysis pushed that date back to around 50,000 years. But one retired professor of anthropology at the University of Alberta says that evidence that the species’ continued existence may have been overlooked, and the Hobbit may still be alive today, or at least within living memory.

In an opinion piece for The Scientist promoting his upcoming book Between Ape and Human, Gregory Forth argues that palaeontologists and other scientists have overlooked Indigenous knowledge and accounts of an “ape-man” living in the forests of Flores.

“My aim in writing the book was to find the best explanation — that is, the most rational and empirically best supported — of Lio accounts of the creatures,” Forth wrote in the piece. “These include reports of sightings by more than 30 eyewitnesses, all of whom I spoke with directly. And I conclude that …

There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The Moon is in Gemini.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Something might be happening in your life that strengthens your spiritual beliefs or give you a stronger interest in spirituality. An offshoot of this is that it could increase your confidence in yourself. This is a good thing. Secrets and hidden information might be revealed now.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

You will benefit strongly from your interactions with a group at this time. They might promote your best interests. Or perhaps, your involvement with a group will be meaningful to you, especially if you are able to effect change that benefits others.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Something is occurring that will boost your reputation in the eyes of your peers at this time. You are admired – no question. For some, this could mean a promotion, an award or some kind of accolades from others. Whatever the case, it’s time for you to take a bow.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Travel opportunities might present themselves to you now. Others will have opportunities to explore further education or avenues in publishing, medicine and the law. You might also be attracted to a particular philosophy or a belief system or something to do with politics. (This is not a casual interest.)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

You are in a wonderful position to benefit from the wealth and resources of others. For example, you might learn more information about what is possible or available to you. You might get money back from the government, or you might inherit. You might also be able to enjoy the opportunity to use something that someone else owns. It’s all good.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Your closest relationships are blooming now, and it’s a wonderful thing. This is a lovely influence that will promote your interactions with close friends, partners and spouses. Enjoy this blessing while it lasts. (Everything’s impermanent – even good stuff.)

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a good time to improve your health or introduce reforms where you work. Wonderful job opportunities might come your way to do this, or you might get a better job or improve the conditions or parameters of your existing job. (Seneca, said, “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Relations with your kids are much improved! Likewise, opportunities in sports, the entertainment world and the hospitality industry are abundant. Meanwhile, you can enjoy social outings and fun times with others, as well as explore the arts.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is a wonderful time for you to make home improvements or to entertain at home. Similarly, this same influence will also promote real-estate opportunities for you or chances to improve your home or your real-estate assets. Ka-ching! Family gatherings will be upbeat and full of fun!

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

For various reasons, according to the personal details of your own life, you feel more optimistic and hopeful about your life, and especially how things will unfold in the future. The tempo of your days might be accelerating with visits, errands and short trips. This is a positive, upbeat time for you!

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Your ability to boost your earnings and become richer in some way is very strong right now. Look for ways to increase your income because this is possible. Some of you might explore work-related travel as well. You are definitely surrounded by opportunities!

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

With Jupiter in your sign dancing with Pluto, you are empowered at this time. Whatever happens, you will see ways to improve your life and your immediate environment. This will come about in a natural, evolved way, with little effort on your part. Go figure. You might assume great power in some way.

If Your Birthday Is Today

Actress Pom Klementieff (1986) shares your birthday today. You have strong morals and principles and you believe in fair play and justice. You are compassionate and helpful to others. You have a witty sense of humour. This is a year of change, which means stay light on your feet. Trust your intuition and expect greater personal freedom.

Mercury’s Sodium Tail

Image Credit & Copyright: Sebastian Voltmer

Explanation: That’s no comet. Below the Pleiades star cluster is actually a planet: Mercury. Long exposures of our Solar System’s innermost planet may reveal something unexpected: a tail. Mercury‘s thin atmosphere contains small amounts of sodium that glow when excited by light from the Sun. Sunlight also liberates these molecules from Mercury’s surface and pushes them away. The yellow glow from sodium, in particular, is relatively bright. Pictured, Mercury and its sodium tail are visible in a deep image taken last week from La PalmaSpain through a filter that primarily transmits yellow light emitted by sodium. First predicted in the 1980s, Mercury’s tail was first discovered in 2001. Many tail details were revealed in multiple observations by NASA‘s robotic MESSENGER spacecraft that orbited Mercury between 2011 and 2015. Tails, of course, are usually associated with comets.

May is most notable for being the turning point in the year where temperatures rise and a vast variety of flowers come into full bloom, letting the world break out into a riot of color. As such, May’s full moon has come to be known as the Full Flower Moon. The Anishnaabe tribe also called it the Blossom Moon. In Northern America, you can expect to see flowers such as bluebells, sundrops, violets, and so on, as well as lush greenery to go with the blossoms. The Apache and Lakota peoples named May’s full moon the Green Leaves Moon, while the Mohawk tribe called it the Big Leaf Moon. But there is one specific plant that’s very important during the May season – and it is, in fact, not a flower.

This plant is corn, an important staple food for Northern American peoples. According to the Algonquin tribes, May’s full moon is the Corn Planting Moon. For Native American tribes, this is the perfect time for them to start preparing the fields for farming and sowing the seeds saved up from last year. Appropriately, the Abenaki culture refers to May’s full moon as the Field Maker Moon, while the Haida tribe calls it the Food Gathering Moon. Apart from corn, other foods such as beans, squash, and potatoes are planted during this time. The Cherokee tribe called May’s full moon the Anisguti Moon, or the Planting Moon, and would traditionally perform a Corn Dance during this period to encourage a fruitful corn harvest.

Due to the rising temperatures, the Full Flower Moon is also a time of heightened fertility. This is a good time for women to bear children in a warm, safe environment that would increase the chance of their survival. That’s why May’s full moon is also named Mother’s Moon, or Milk Moon, which could refer to breastfeeding or to the milking of cows. The latter interpretation is based off the Old English name Rimilcemona, or the Month of Three Milkings, referring to how this was a period where cows could be milked up to three times daily.

In other parts of the world, the Full Flower Moon is better known as Vesak or Buddha Day, the most significant celebration for Buddhists all around the world. On the first full moon of May, Buddhists commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. Devout practitioners are encouraged to renew their intention to adhere to sacred Buddhist principles, as well as refrain from all forms of killing and violence, including eating meat. Celebrations include giving charity to the poor, disabled, and otherwise marginalized groups in society. Depending on your location, you may witness the spectacular practice of releasing thousands of caged birds into the air as a symbolic gesture of liberation, though this tradition is illegal in countries such as Singapore because it may cause harm to local ecosystems.

Pagans, on the other hand, associate the Full Flower Moon with the element of fire, and thus often celebrate it by lighting bonfires and engaging in other magical fire rituals to bring prosperity. Powerful colors for the Full Flower Moon include fiery colors like red, yellow, and orange. This is a good time to tend your garden and let the seeds you’ve planted blossom – both literally and metaphorically. Cultivate your passions and desires, encourage them to burst forth into bloom, and you will be rewarded with abundance in various forms in your life.

Observing the planets in May 2022

Our month-by-month guide to locating the planets throughout 2022.

Finding and observing the planets of the Solar System in the night sky isn’t as tricky as you think. You just need to know where to look.

When a planet is in a particularly favourable position in the evening or morning sky, it will look like a bright ‘star’, the most obvious point of light visible to the naked eye.

The other thing about spotting the planets in the night sky is that they can also be found along the ecliptic, which is the imaginary line that the Sun appears to traverse in the sky over the course of a day.

Since the major planets of the Solar System orbit the Sun in about the same plane, the ecliptic also marks the path of the planets.

Is it bright, but on the wrong side of the sky to the ecliptic? Then it’s not a planet.

For more advice, read our guide on how to find planets in the night sky.

Once you’ve got to grips with this, all you need to know is what planets will be visible in the night each month, so you know what to look out for, and what dates they will be best placed.

This is where our guide below comes in. Use it throughout the coming 12 months to find out which planets are visible in the night sky in 2022, which are at opposition, and to keep track of any interesting upcoming conjunctions.

Mercury: Impressive evening planet at start of May, near the Pleiades.

Venus: Morning planet, near Jupiter on 1 May. 10%-lit waning crescent Moon nearby on 27 May.

Mars: Morning planet. Close encounter with Jupiter at end of May.

Watch out for a total lunar eclipse on 16 May. This will be a challenging target because the Moon sets during totality. Credit: Pete Lawrence

Jupiter: Morning planet, near Venus on 1 May and Mars on 29 May. Waning Moon nearby on 25 May.

Saturn: Low altitude morning object. Waning gibbous Moon on 22 May.

Uranus: Uranus lines up with the Sun on 5 May and not visible this month.

Neptune: Neptune is a morning planet, but not visible this month.

Partial Solar Eclipse over Argentina

Image Credit & Copyright: Aixa Andrada

Explanation: What’s happened to the Sun? Two days ago, parts of South America were treated to a partial solar eclipse — where the Moon blocked out part of the Sun. The featured image shows an image of the partially eclipsed Sun through clouds as it was setting over PatagoniaArgentina. In the tilted image, Earth is toward the right. During the eclipse, the Moon moved partly between Earth and the Sun. Although a visually impressive sight, the slight dimming of surroundings during this partial eclipse was less noticeable than dimming created by a thick cloud. In about two weeks, all of South America and part of North America will experience a total lunar eclipse — where the Earth moves completely between the Moon and the Sun. In about two years, a total solar eclipse will cross North America.

You can use this link to go forward or backward in time for Moon phase information. If you are curious, you can even find out what phase the Moon was in when you or anyone else was born.

From Moongiant.com

Today and tonight the Moon will be in a Waxing Crescent Phase. A Waxing Crescent is the first Phase after the New Moon and is a great time to see the features of the moon’s surface. During this phase the Moon can be seen in the wester sky after the sun dips below the horizon at sunset. The moon is close to the sun in the sky and mostly dark except for the right edge of the moon which becomes brighter as the days get closer to the next phase which is a First Quarter with a 50% illumination.

Visit the May 2022 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.

Waxing Crescent Phase

The Waxing Crescent on May 2 has an illumination of 3%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On May 2 the Moon is 1.53 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

The 8 Lunar Phases

There are 8 lunar phases the Moon goes through in its 29.53 days lunar cycle. The 4 major Moon phases are Full Moon, New Moon, First Quarter and Last Quarter. Between these major phases, there are 4 minor ones: the Waxing Crescent, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous and Waning Crescent. For more info on the Moon Cycle and on each phase check out Wikipedia Lunar Phase page.

First Horizon-Scale Image of a Black Hole

Image Credit: Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration

Explanation: What does a black hole look like? To find out, radio telescopes from around the Earth coordinated observations of black holes with the largest known event horizons on the sky. Alone, black holes are just black, but these monster attractors are known to be surrounded by glowing gas. This first image resolves the area around the black hole at the center of galaxy M87 on a scale below that expected for its event horizonPictured, the dark central region is not the event horizon, but rather the black hole’s shadow — the central region of emitting gas darkened by the central black hole’s gravity. The size and shape of the shadow is determined by bright gas near the event horizon, by strong gravitational lensing deflections, and by the black hole’s spin. In resolving this black hole’s shadow, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) bolstered evidence that Einstein’s gravity works even in extreme regions, and gave clear evidence that M87 has a central spinning black hole of about 6 billion solar masses. Since releasing this featured image in 2019, the EHT has expanded to include more telescopes, observe more black holes, track polarized light, and is working to observe the immediately vicinity of the black hole in the center of our Milky Way Galaxy.

This week is: Black Hole Week
New EHT Results to be Announced: Next Thursday
