King of Frost Day

Prior to World War I, a fair was held on this day in London to honor the King of Frost. All the townspeople would gather on the Thames River, normally frozen over at this time, and petition the King of Frost to bring forth Spring. The festival died out during the war.

Along the Welsh border people continue to celebrate this day by gathering snowdrops, sometimes called Candlemas Bells. These tiny bright flowers are tied into bundles and used to purify the hearth and home.

Try a small prayer to Jupiter before commencing any ritual on Thursday as a sign of respect.

This is the proper day of the week to perform spells and rituals involving luck, happiness, health, legal matters, male fertility, treasure, wealth, honour, riches, clothing, money, desires, business, group pursuits, joy, laughter, and expansion.

Aspects of the Moon In Capricorn

Digging In
When the Moon is in Capricorn, we’re more serious minded. It’s harder to just hang out. We want to feel productive on something that has substance to it. Capricorn is an earth sign that means business. With the Moon here, emotional force can be applied to whatever is in process.

These days are great for pushing past difficult obstacles. You’ve got extra discipline and patience. And you’re able to forgo the satisfaction of short term gains for longer term achievements.

Conserving Energy
There’s more social reserve, and we like to have common goals. It’s a conservative mood, that makes us more thrifty, looking for more bang for the buck. This gives us an eye for what’s solid, and has enduring value.

You’re more apt to choose the tried and true now, over something experimental. When in doubt about it, you’ll pass it by.

This lunar mood puts the focus on real world ambitions. You might spend our time mapping out a business plan. It’s timely for considering what’s a good investment of your time, energy and resources. What will bring a solid return? Everything is viewed through a practical eye, including relationships.

You can see how to make structural changes that make life more efficient.

Power activities under the Capricorn Moon: meeting with clients or collaborators; putting together a proposal; considering investments; acting or speaking with authority; working with a mentor or “mentee”; upholding a longstanding tradition; taking control of a situation.

Follow the Moon
It changes signs every 2 1/2 days. You can work with this rhythm to “go with the flow” of the Moon. You can use it to know the general feeling tone to expect.

Deities Associated with Thursday – Zeus, Ruler of Olympus

Stormy Night
Deities Associated with Thursday – Zeus, Ruler of Olympus

Zeus was the youngest son of Cronos and Rhea, and became the supreme ruler of all the gods of the ancient Greeks. Citizens from all of the Greek city-states honored him, particularly at the Temple of Olympus, which became the site of a major festival every four years – that religious festival eventually became known as the Olympic Games. A colossal golden statue of Zeus was the site of many rites and rituals involving the athletes of the Olympics.

Early History and Worship
Although Zeus was venerated in many areas of Greece, there doesn’t seem to be much consistency about the methodology of this worship, and his temples (and titles) took a variety of forms. A number of different “cults of Zeus” popped up throughout history. One common form of honoring him appears to be the sacrificing of a white animal — sheep, bull, pig, etc. — over an elevated altar.

In addition to being the head honcho of Olympus, Zeus is the god of thunder and lightning. He is often represented by a lightning bolt, and is sometimes depicted with an eagle, bull, or oak tree.

Because Zeus was also considered a weather god – after all, he was the one who threw thunderbolts down from the sky – he was often worshiped on high mountaintops, including but not limited to Mount Olympus.

Eventually, the cult of Zeus expanded beyond the borders of Greece, and into nearby empires, including Persia. Herodotus wrote a lengthy description of a temple to Zeus Belus in Babylon. He described “a square of four hundred and forty yards each way, with gates of bronze.

In the center of this enclosure a solid tower has been built, two hundred and twenty yards long and broad; a second tower rises from this and from it yet another, until at last there are eight. The way up them mounts spirally outside the height of the towers; about halfway up is a resting place, with seats for repose, where those who ascend sit down and rest. In the last tower there is a great shrine; and in it stands a great and well-covered couch, and a golden table nearby.”

Zeus Gets Around
Zeus was known as quite the philanderer. Although he was married to his sister Hera, goddess of marriage, he strayed from her bed fairly regularly.

Zeus hooked up with numerous other goddesses, mortal humans, the occasional nymph, and even a few animals. Hera jealously put up with his wandering ways, and often took revenge upon Zeus’ women by going after their children. Zeus sired many of the Greek heroes and demi-gods during his amorous adventures. His extramarital activities weren’t limited to women, either. Zeus’ cup-bearer, the handsome Ganymede, earned Hera’s wrath when she discovered that the young man was also her husband’s lover.

Modern Worship of Zeus
As the supreme ruler of Mt. Olympus, Zeus was in charge of justice, morals and law. His word was to be obeyed by both men and gods alike. Today, many Hellenic Pagans continue to honor Zeus and the other gods of the ancient Greeks. Some are members of a group called the Return of the Hellenes, and consider today’s Greece to be under Christian occupation. A 2013 BBC article quotes Exsekias Trivoulides, who says, “People want to identify with something in the past – where they came from – so as to know where they are going… If you don’t know your past, you don’t have a future.”

Thursday’s Witchery

Thursday’s Witchery

Today is the day for prosperity work of all kinds. It can also be used for healing work, whether that is a physical healing of an illness or an emotional healing. Also remember that you have to follow up your healing work and prosperity magick and physical action.

I can’t tell you the number of times I have met new witches who complain to me that their prosperity spell or “I need a better job” spell did not work as they expected. They’ll ramble on and on about how much time and money they spent working their magick….but, alas, they had no glorious manifestation of wealth or fabulous job that suddenly dropped out of the sky and landed in their laps.

Then, when I gently ask them, “Did you enchant your resume or application when you filled it out? Did you do a little confidence-boosting spellwork when you went to apply for the job or went to the interview?” typically they give me a blank, confused stare.

Nine times out of ten, their response is, “You mean I have to go out and actually look for the job too?” Um, yes, my dear, you certainly do. Magick follows the path of least resistance, which means it’s going to manifest along the simplest, quickest route. Get out there and hit the pavement. See what you can find. Times are tough and competition for good jobs is fierce, so you need whatever edge you can get. For folks like us, we’re going to get the edge by using our magick and our spellcraft.

Thursdays have such a rich source of magick for us to draw upon that, honestly, the sky is the limit. This is the day associated with the gods of the sky and heavens, after all. Get to know these deities and add their wisdom and magick into your days

Thursday

Thor’s (Jupiter’s) day

The name is derived from Old English Þūnresdæg and Middle English Thuresday (with loss of -n-, first in northern dialects, from influence of Old Norse Þorsdagr) meaning “Thor’s Day”. Thunor, Donar (German, Donnerstag) and Thor are derived from the name of the Germanic god of thunder, Thunraz, equivalent to Jupiter in the interpretatio romana.

In most Romance languages, the day is named after the Roman god Jupiter, who was the god of sky and thunder. In Latin, the day was known as Iovis Dies, “Jupiter’s Day”. In Latin, the genitive or possessive case of Jupiter was Iovis/Jovis and thus in most Romance languages it became the word for Thursday: Italian giovedì, Spanish jueves, French jeudi, Sardinian jòvia, Catalan dijous, and Romanian joi. This is also reflected in the p-Celtic Welsh dydd Iau.

The astrological and astronomical sign of the planet Jupiter (♃Jupiter) is sometimes used to represent Thursday.

Since the Roman god Jupiter was identified with Thunor (Norse Thor in northern Europe), most Germanic languages name the day after this god: Torsdag in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, Hósdagur/Tórsdagur in Faroese, Donnerstag in German or Donderdag in Dutch. Finnish and Northern Sami, both non-Germanic (Uralic) languages, uses the borrowing “Torstai” and “Duorastat”. In the extinct Polabian Slavic language, it was perundan, Perun being the Slavic equivalent of Thor.

There are a number of modern names imitating the naming of Thursday after an equivalent of “Jupiter” in local tradition. In most of the languages of India, the word for Thursday is Guruvar – var meaning day and guru being the style for Bṛhaspati, guru to the gods and regent of the planet Jupiter. In Thai, the word is Wan Pharuehatsabodi – referring to the Hindu deity Bṛhaspati, also associated with Jupiter. En was an old Illyrian deity and in his honor in the Albanian language Thursday is called “Enjte”.[5] In the Nahuatl language, Thursday is Tezcatlipotōnal (Nahuatl pronunciation: [teskat͡ɬipoˈtoːnaɬ]) meaning “day of Tezcatlipoca”.

February Calendar Stamp Challenge - My entry #4

Where Once I Walked This Hidden Road

Where once I walked this hidden road
I now see light and sky
This was the path of secrecy and
always had been so
But now this path the world can see
If they know where to look, they
can follow it with me
The trees surrounding me are
still as strong
Their trunks are ever wide
But now between them are shafts
of light and sunshine fills the sky
Where once I walked this hidden road
I now see light and sky
So who did spread this truth about,
who told the world and did not lie?
So many of us now tell our tales
Of how to find the forest’s hidden trail
And so the secret now is shared
And those who know it need not be scared
Some walk together, some walk alone
But all of us walk in to the unknown
Where once I walked this hidden road
I now see light and sky
And in my very soul I know,
I will walk this path until I die
Though the end of this road is rarely
in sight It is sometimes glimpsed in the dead of light
When Hecate’s veil begins to lift
And she offers to us that greatest gift
And when I am embraced in her
arms so tight
I know I will be back here again…
Where once I walk this hidden road.

The Witches Magick for February 3rd – Far Memory Divination

pagan19

Far Memory Divination

Set a white candle aflame in a darkened room and place in a position so that it illuminates your face as you stand before the mirror, but itself isn’t reflected.

Say the following:

Oracle of lunar light,
send me now the second sight.

Gaze into your reflection’s eyes, or just above and between them. Gradually, your reflection will dissolve and you will see another face appear; it will be that of a former life. It should be unmistakably familiar to you.

With practice this can be used to learn a great deal about past lives. Try to “tune in” on the face. Attempt to see the rest of the body, clothing, jewelry, backgrounds— anything that would help you place the period and location.

Just seeing the face may trigger unexpected emotional reactions within you; note these and you may begin to remember people and events that have been locked away inside your far memory.

Sometimes this works better in near darkness; adjust the amount of light that hits your face until you have achieved desired results.

Galaxy Wars: M81 versus M82

Explanation: In the lower left corner, surrounded by blue spiral arms, is spiral galaxy M81. In the upper right corner, marked by red gas and dust clouds, is irregular galaxy M82. This stunning vista shows these two mammoth galaxies locked in gravitational combat, as they have been for the past billion years. The gravity from each galaxy dramatically affects the other during each hundred million-year pass. Last go-round, M82’s gravity likely raised density waves rippling around M81, resulting in the richness of M81’s spiral arms. But M81 left M82 with violent star forming regions and colliding gas clouds so energetic the galaxy glows in X-rays. This big battle is seen from Earth through the faint glow of an Integrated Flux Nebula, a little studied complex of diffuse gas and dust clouds in our Milky Way Galaxy. In a few billion years only one galaxy will remain.

Mercury in Capricorn

Now Until Feb 13, 2016

Mercury, the planet of communication and mental activity, is likely to keep us more focused on practical matters when in earthy Capricorn. Organization is a key idea here, one that enables bits of data to be cobbled together into larger patterns. This intellectual structuring helps transform concepts into reality.

The Mercury in Capricorn perspective is acutely aware of hierarchies. This means that conversation may become more about who’s on top than a real sharing of information. Sensitivity to how communication and control are linked is strong during this period. Casual remarks are not associated with this placement. Information, rather, must have a purpose.

Building is a real positive here, along with a more mature view of reality. However, there can also be a pessimism born of Capricorn’s potentially narrow focus. Abstraction can be lost in Cap’s need for clear, sharp and practical information. It’s important, then, to not lose sight of the value of idle thinking and speculation during this otherwise goal-oriented time.

Golf heroes Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus were both born with Mercury in Capricorn, as were singers Michael Stipe, Elvis Presley, Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel, Natalie Cole and Dolly Parton. Mercury was in Capricorn for activists Angela Davis, Jane Fonda, Germaine Greer and Vanessa Redgrave, conservatives Ronald Reagan and Dr. Laura Schlessinger, actors Samuel L. Jackson, Mel Gibson, Bridget Fonda, Nicolas Cage and Mary Tyler Moore, the funny Ellen Degeneres, funnier Boris Yeltsin and funniest Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh.
