Seasons of the Witch – Legends and Lore, Ancient Holidays And Some Not So Ancient!

Today Is …

Lithuanian Lovers Festival. In Lithuania, the ancient goddesses of love are invoked during an annual lover’s festival called The Binding of the Wreaths, which takes place on this day.

On this date in the year 1980, famous Dutch clairvoyant Gerard Croiset passed away. He was renowned as both a psychic healer and psychic criminologist.

Slavic Pagan: Perun’s Day. On this day a human sacrifice was chosen by ballot. There is record of a viking’s son being chosen and the viking refusing to give him up. Both father and son were killed as a result. This day was considered a “Terrible” holiday. The sacrifice was seen as necessary to placate the God and keep him from destroying the crops with late summer storms. A bull was also sacrificed and eaten as a communal meal.

Feast of the Redeemer – On the third Sunday in July, Venetians celebrate their escape from a plague. After Mass in the Church of San Redentore, people picnic on the water and watch fireworks in the evening. Some folks stay up all night to watch the sun rise the next morning. This holiday seems to be a dim reflection of summer solstice customs. Blackburn, Bonnie & Leofranc Holford-Strevens, The Oxford Companion to the Year, Oxford University Press 1999

St Margaret – Famous in the medieval ages as a saint for women (she was one of the voices speaking to Joan of Arc), she has faded off the church calendar, probably because of lack of evidence for her existence. She is called Marina in the East. There’s also a Saint Pelagia, whose nickname is Maragarito.

Both Marina and Pelagia mean sea. The name Margaret itself derives from the Greek word, maragarites, meaning pearl. These names link Margaret to the great Sea-Mother known under many names including Mary, Marina and Miriam. Pelagia is one of the names of Aphrodite in her aspect as the Goddess of the Sea. And July is the month of a Greek festival celebrating the wedding of Adonis and Aphrodite.

Margaret’s story is similar to that of many virgin martyrs. She’s said to be the daughter of a pagan priest at Antioch who rejected the advances of a prefect who then denounced her as a Christian. She suffered many ordeals, including being swallowed by Satan in the form of a dragon, but she caused his belly to burst and stepped forth unharmed. She was invoked by pregnant women for protection from the dangers of childbirth and for those who were dying for escape from the Devil.

Margaret is often represented standing over a dragon, like other saints, including Martha (whose feast day falls on the nearby July 28th). The Dragon Project researchers believe the image of slaying the dragon, which is always accomplished with an iron pole, has something to do with earthing energy which is floating about loose and might hurt the crops or the animals.

The Chinese say that the dragon is thunder (and this is the time of thunderstorms), a creature of the waters who rests in pools in the winter and rises up as the rain in the spring. The dragon is a symbol of the force operating beneath the surface of the earth which emerges at the proper time. Given the association of Margaret with water and the time of the year at which she is honored (the height of summer), it is possible that the dragon is really a sea-serpent. Perhaps when Margaret strikes the ground with her iron staff, she brings forth a life-giving spring or calls forth the flood waters of the Nile.

The wheatfield poppy supposedly sprang from the blood of the dragon she slew. Long before, it was dedicated to Diana and Demeter as the source of healing sleep and death. St Margaret’s flower is the Virginian dragon’s head.

Her feast day was sometimes seen as the start of the dog days, as in this mnemonic: Margaret is the dog’s mouth, Laurence (Aug 10) brings his tail.

St Wilgefortis or St Uncumber – Like St Distaff, whose feast day follows the Twelve Days of Christmas, she is a fictitious saint. Legend says that Wilgefortis was a daughter of the King of Portugal who did not wish to marry. When her father tried to press marriage upon her she prayed for help and sprouted a copious beard, which drove all prospective suitors away. Her name Wilgefortis may be derived from Virgo Fortis (Mighty Maiden). She is also known as Liberata, Livrade, Kummeris and Uncumber (in England) and invoked by women who wish to rid themselves of troublesome husbands or importunate suitors. Rago says you can achieve the same thing by picking parsley at dawn and wishing aloud for release.

Her story and feast day may derive from the stories of the Corinthian Aphrodite who grew a beard and impregnated women.

Monday Is A Day of Witchery, Magick and Enchantment

Monday Is A Day of Witchery, Magick and Enchantment

Think for a moment on all of the witchery, magick and enchantments that you have discovered. Don’t be afraid to adjust spells to suit your own specific needs. Any gentle, illusory, and dreamy charms and spells can be enhanced when you work on the day of the week that is dedicated to the moon. Mondays are a fantastic day to boost your psychic abilities and to tune in to your intuition and empathy. It also gives you the opportunity to work with a different lunar phase each and every Monday, which means in one month you could work four different types of moon magicks on Mondays. How’s that for adding to your repertoire? You are going to have mad skills in no time at all.

So light up those lunar scented candles and add a little mystique to your outfit by wearing an enchanting lunar color. Wear your sparkling silver jewelry and maybe add a pair of dangling silver earrings or a pendant shaped like a crescent moon. Create lunar potions and philters; make a dream catcher and give it as a gift to someone you love. Burn some sandalwood or jasmine-scented incense today to inspire the glamour and magick of the moon. Slice up a favorite variety of fruit that is in season for a snack or share it with your love and enjoy his or her lunar and romantic qualities. Brew up a cup of chamomile tea, enchant it with a little moon magick, and relax and get a good night’s sleep.

Most importantly, get outside tonight and watch the moon for a while. What phase is she in? What color was the moon as she rose? Why not start a journal and write down at what location the moon rises and sets for a few seasons? This is a great way to teach you to tune in and to become more aware of the moon and the influence that she pulls into our lives. Try calling on Selene for her magickal assistance, and call Thoth for wisdom and strength. Get to know the Norse Mani and the Latvian Meness. These gods of the moon have plenty to teach, and if you allow their influence to cycle through your life, you’ll receive many blessings. Be imaginative, and create your own personal lunar magick and witchery. Go on….the moonlight becomes you.

Monday

In the word Monday, we can see part of the word Moon. In the romance languages such as Italian or Spanish, this day of the week is called Lunes and clearly relates to the word lunar.

On Mondays, a variety of magick may be worked. Because Monday centers on the energies of the Moon, things like psychism, dreams, feminine energy, health, success in spiritual pursuits, domestic matters, and things of family origin are especially important this day.

Mondays are best for love magick and anything concerning home or family, thus old saying, Mondays child is fair of face, which seems clearly to relate to the themes of love and health.

Angels of Monday are Gabriel, Arcan, Missabu, and Abuzaha. Arcan is known as the king of the angels of air and the “ruler” of Monday. Abuzaha (Abuzohar) serves Monday, and is very responsive to invocations and ritual magick. Missabu is a ministering angel of Arcan.

Check whether the moon is waning or waxing to determine what your spell will be. During waning moons, do spells to rid yourself of obstacles or for wisdom and protection. During waxing moons do magic for increase of any kind or to draw something into your life.

On Mondays, the best hour to work is moonrise. Get this information from your local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac.

The Goddess Is Alive”

Moon shines down upon a sea of Light,
Shifting sands lay singing in the Heart of the Night.
I looked upon a scene that gripped me to the core,
White-clad maidens below were dancing on the shore.

Sweet sounds slipped from moon-lit throats,
Wind whipped hair abound,
Lit by the light within and without,
The Women circled ’round.

As I stood, water engulfed my feet,
My body swayed to your Heavenly Heart beat.
Wind and wave and fire light,
Paled in my mind Earthly delight.

Time slipped by me as you held your embrace,
And windblown spray covered my face.
Protected deep within your Womb,
I could feel the tender pain of Life’s bloom.

Candles flared high as the Dance progressed,
Deep inside with a healing touch you blessed.
All around, wind, wave and fire shouted of your life,
Your light speared deep within, soothing my strife.

Divine Mother, Goddess of Light,
To you I come seeking protection from the night.
Come home to shelter within your arm,
Surrounded by Love, hidden from harm.

Holy Mother, Queen of Heaven and Earth,
From you we all trace our Birth.
Heavenly Goddess, light from above,
Shine down upon us, we pray for your Love.

Can You Find Your Inner Magician?

d7bd6-0e574554a7696e836c188940043aa1d4

Can You Find Your Inner Magician?

Many Nature-based religions could be considered Pagan or “of the land.” But rather than relying on labels, looking at your beliefs about how the world works will tell you whether practicing magick is for you. Embracing some or most of the following philosophies might be the first steps in recognizing the magician within yourself so that you can become a practitioner of the natural world:

* Believing in more than one deity and/or more than one aspect of a single deity

* Expecting the Earth to take care of your needs and not being surprised when it does

* Being mindful of the well-being of all other life forms around you

* Doing all you can to preserve the natural world while understanding that humans are also part of Nature

* Living ethically and wisely on the planet as much as possible.

* Practicing right eating habits for your own health and the health of the planet

* Being a pantheist—that is, seeing the God and Goddess forces represented in everything around you

* Recognizing the sacred feminine as well as the sacred masculine

* Believing that the life force is sacred and that Nature, as a representation of that force, is divine

* Believing that all life forms are equal and share an equal claim to the Earth as a home

* Knowing that each individual is solely responsible for his or her own actions and that those actions should bring harm to no one

* Believing that the forces of Nature follow a pattern and can be shaped in ways commonly called “magickal”

* Believing that whatever actions a person takes, a magickal or mundane, good or bad, come back to him or her threefold

* Believing that there is no single path to spiritual fulfillment and that the individual determines the spiritual expression most appropriate to him or her
* Understanding and honoring everything about where you live
* Practicing the use of all your senses every waking minute

What is good for the Earth is good for its inhabitants. Recycling, planting trees, avoiding pesticides, conserving water, and refusing products from endangered species all attune you to the Earth and, therefore, to its positive energy. Practicing magick is good for all the earthlings–finned feathered, and furred as well as two-footed.

Goal or Purpose of Magick

Goal or Purpose of Magick

Drawing: to bring something (money, love; health, new job, etc.)

Repelling/Banishing/Exorcising: to cast something away(something unwanted; repel negative energies, banish poverty; unemployment; exorcise depression-inducing energies; aid spirits to pass on to next world).

Containment/Deflection/Reflection: to place limitations.

– shielding; to protect from incoming negativity

– confining; to restrict negativity to its source.

– dispersing; to dissipate incoming negative energies.

– turning; to return to sender deliberate negative energy.

Retain the Rules of Conduct or the Witches’ Rede:

– NEVER, EVER, casts magick against another witch.

– never initiate negative magick towards another.

– self-defense is acceptable as prevention, disbursement, or returning, for people are responsible for their own action.

Magical Principles

Magical Principles

• Magic is natural.

• Harm none- not even yourself- through its use.

• Magic requires effort. You will receive what you put into it.

• Magic is not usually instantaneous. Spells require time to be effective.

• Magic should not be performed for pay.

• Magic should not be used in jest or to inflate your ego.

• Magic can be worked for your own gain, but only if it harms none.

• Magic is a divine act.

• Magic can be used for defense but should never be used for attack.

• Magic is knowledge – not only of its way and laws, but also of its effectiveness. Do not believe that magic works – Know It.

• Magic is love. All magic should be performed out of love. The moment anger or hatred tinges your magic you have crossed the border into a dangerous world, one that will ultimately consume you.

The Goddess Creed

The Goddess Creed

I believe in Goddess the Mother All Mighty
Creatrix of the heavens and earth
And in all women
Who were conceived of Her love
Born of our sacred mothers
Suffered under patriarchy
Were crucified, died, and were buried
We descended into the underworld
The third day we arose again
We integrated with our new selves
And we now sit with Goddess our Mother
And we judge no one
I believe in the Holy Mother
The maiden, mother, crone
Forgiveness toward others
The celebration of the body
And everlasting renewal of life
So Mote It Be
