Once in a New Moon

Once in a New Moon

Embark on the road to personal discovery

Jeff Jawer    Jeff Jawer on the topics of aquarius, new moon
Every 29.5 days the fast-moving Moon catches up to the Sun and begins a new monthly cycle. This is called the New Moon and we have one coming up very late this Saturday or early Sunday, depending upon where you are. This conjunction of the Sun and Moon occurs in the unconventional sign of Aquarius where veering off in strange directions is appropriate. It’s an opportunity to cut loose of the past, or at least some of the memories that hang us up. Aquarius is cool, independent and detached — ideal for learning to live in the present while thinking about the future.

However, one of the crazy quirks of Aquarius is that it’s a sign that believes in community but demands the freedom to act independently. Therefore this New Moon can stimulate ideas about volunteering for a cause and working for a group while inciting people to break out the limitations imposed on them by others. The connection of this seeming contradiction between being a team player and a solo star is free will. Aquarius is about having the liberty to act as we wish, which can include making sacrifices for the greater good if that’s a person’s choice. Participation should never be mandatory when this sign is present.

There is, though, an isolated side to Aquarius, which accompanies independence and originality. Freedom sounds like a great concept but it’s often experienced as alienation, leaving one with the sense of being out in the cold. This New Moon makes that possibility even stronger because it forms a hard 90-degree square with the Moon Nodes. The Nodes are the connecting points of the Sun, Moon and Earth. Planets square to them are often difficult to integrate into relationships. The experience of being the outsider, which can feel good when we want it, underscores the potential for estrangement in chilly Aquarius.

Cheers to new beginnings

Still, the fundamental gift of any New Moon is the potential for a fresh start. This is particularly so with this lunation in original Aquarius. But the price to be paid may be that we have to go through some kind of separation with the past. It could be breaking connections with someone, leaving a job behind, radically altering one’s style, discovering new social interests or making a major shift in beliefs and aspirations. Doing one of these may be a necessary first step on a new road of discovery.

Those who love us and know us best are often resistant (consciously or not) to our radical changes. It threatens the stability of their world and can be interpreted as a mistake. Yet the biggest mistake we humans may be making is the failure to question our habits, goals and values. We could be on a path of destruction that will undermine the intellectual and material progress of the past millennia if we fail to change course. The steps that we take as individuals to liberate ourselves from outmoded patterns supply the ingenuity and creative juice that just might help our species to find a necessary new direction.

The Magickal Moon’s Current Phase for Feb. 8: Waning Crescent

Crescent Moon

(waning /10% illumintion)

This is a time to rest, reevaluate and reflect, pulling back into yourself to reconnect with inner sources of strength. Now is not a time to initiate anything new. It’s a phase suited to spending time with friends and getting in touch with the “big picture.” A window of opportunity exists for seeing your life objectively and becoming aware of what is important to you. At this point, what are your dreams and aspirations? What larger goals can you aspire to that will bring vitality and excitement into your life? This is a time for resting and gaining inner strength to prepare for a new cycle.

Wishing You A Very Happy & Blessed Friday, dear family & friends!

Your Tarot Card for February 7th is The Moon

The Moon

Thursday, Feb 7th, 2013

What has traditionally been known as the Moon card refers to a deep state of sensitivity and imaginative impressionability, developed within a womb of deep relaxation. Here we dream and go into trance, have visions and receive insights, wash in and out with the psychic tides, and experience deep mystical and/or terrifying realities beyond our ordinary senses. The full moon and/or eclipse cycle charted by the Magi (as in some of the earliest Moon card images) exemplify this as a mechanism that Nature uses to expand consciousness.

The variants of the courtly lovers (representing skillful use of the sex force) or the man sleeping it off under the tree (use of drugs to alter consciousness) are also traditional avenues for tapping this primal force. Human interest in higher states propels us to the frontiers of consciousness, where we cannot always control what happens. The Moon card represents the ultimate test of a soul’s integrity, where the membrane between self and the Unknown is removed, and the drop of individuality reenters the Ocean of Being. What transpires next is between a soul and its Maker.

Your Tarot Card for February 6th is The Sun

The Sun

Wednesday, Feb 6th, 2013

What has traditionally been known as the Sun card is about the self — who you are and how you cultivate your personality and character. The earth revolves around the sun to make up one year of a person’s life, a fact we celebrate on our birthday.

The Sun card could also be titled “Back to Eden.” The Sun’s radiance is where one’s original nature or unconditioned Being can be encountered in health and safety. The limitations of time and space are stripped away; the soul is refreshed and temporarily protected from the chaos outside the garden walls.

Under the light of the Sun, Life reclaims its primordial goodness, truth and beauty. If one person is shown on this card, it is usually signifying a human incarnation of the Divine. When two humans are shown, the image is portraying a resolution of the tension between opposites at all levels. It’s as if this card is saying “You can do no wrong — it’s all to the good!”

Your Daily Horoscopes for Monday, February 4th

This is a rather strange day as boundaries become confused and uncertainty creeps into our lives. The cosmic culprit is a conjunction between active Mars and imaginative Neptune — an aspect that can take the wind out of our sails and leave us to drift aimlessly. However, frustration develops because the Moon’s shift into adventurous Sagittarius at 10:45 am EST inspires us to get started on our journey, even if we don’t know where we’re going.

Aries Horoscope

(Mar 21 – Apr 19)

Your behavior may be misinterpreted today as your key planet Mars aligns with fuzzy Neptune, making it difficult to plan ahead. You need to take other people’s perspectives into consideration before you initiate action, yet this process may take longer than you prefer. Instead of pushing for resolution, ease up and let the events take their own course. Enjoy the magic of your current sense of timelessness before you have to return to reality.

Taurus Horoscope

(Apr 20 – May 20)

You might still be recovering from a recent setback, but now it seems as if the pendulum is swinging in the other direction. Although you may be making progress, you aren’t as sure of yourself today. Instead of stubbornly holding on to your goals, float along for a while and just see what happens. Don’t judge yourself harshly if you are considering a change of plans. Trust your intuition over the facts.

Gemini Horoscope

(May 21 – Jun 20)

It may be difficult to accomplish a lot today because you’re more inclined to spend your time wandering around in your dreams now than paying attention to your current responsibilities. You can skillfully bend the truth with your actions, but there still could be a wide gulf between your fantasy life and what you show to others. If you don’t stretch reality too far, you have a good chance of tap-dancing your way through the day.

Cancer Horoscope

(Jun 21 – Jul 22)

Somehow you seem to know exactly what’s going on as information about your future comes to you through your dreams. Don’t ignore your intuition today because it enables you to touch a deep spiritual truth. However, you must willingly surrender your logic and accept any inconsistencies that arise in your imagination now — even if they add confusion to the picture. Let the story unfold naturally and figure out the meaning later.

Leo Horoscope

(Jul 23 – Aug 22)

You think you can get by without the details now, therefore you’re more willing to fill in the missing information yourself. Although it appears that someone purposefully misleads you today, it could just be a case of a simple misunderstanding. Unfortunately, your vision may not be the same as someone else’s, so make it your business to discuss anything that seems to be in conflict. Remember, you don’t have to prove yourself right; cooperation is more useful than competition.

Virgo Horoscope

(Aug 23 – Sep 22)

It’s difficult to work with someone who is lost in dreams rather than sharing your sense of practicality. Your co-workers might actually believe that they can wish their way out of a difficult situation, but you know that escape isn’t that simple now. However, it’s crucial to keep an open mind while interacting with others because some solutions come from the imagination and are not the result of logic.

Libra Horoscope

(Sep 23 – Oct 22)

Unusual physical sensations stir up fears today if you are worried about the underlying cause of any symptoms. Usually, you can maintain a balanced perspective when it comes to your health. But now — even if you’re feeling fine — it’s hard to wrap your mind around what’s happening. Don’t stress yourself out by attempting to force a premature solution. Get professional advice if you think there’s reason for concern. Otherwise, let the ambiguity resolve in its own time without giving it more energy than it’s worth.

Scorpio Horoscope

(Oct 23 – Nov 21)

You could be enamored with someone today as you are attracted to an ideal picture of love. Unfortunately, reality isn’t likely to live up to the perfection of your fantasy. Although infatuation can spark romantic fires, your attempts to turn feelings into a lasting relationship now might be futile. Nevertheless, allow for the possibility of being surprised. Either way, enjoy the pleasure of the present moment without trying to sustain it.

Sagittarius Horoscope

(Nov 22 – Dec 21)

You may be stuck in the paradox between your desire for peace at home and the frustration of lingering negative emotions. You’re willing to do your part to create a harmonious environment, but it’s not wise to become too attached to an unrealistic goal. Be careful; you could inadvertently sabotage your plan by hesitating when you really need to jump right in. Thankfully, you should do fine just by improvising as you go along.

Capricorn Horoscope

(Dec 22 – Jan 19)

You are quite charming today as you express your intentions through poetic words rather than concrete actions. Unfortunately, this dreamy state of mind may not be very useful if you need to communicate specific information. It’s not that your thinking is flawed; it’s just that you are better off now telling a story or singing a song. Carefully consider your audience before delivering your message.

Aquarius Horoscope

(Jan 20 – Feb 18)

You gain confidence when you know all the rules of the game because then you can choose which ones might be worth breaking. However, you’re not particularly comfortable with uncertainty, especially when it concerns money issues. You are challenged today because you don’t have the facts you need to make a financial decision. Your natural tendency might be to fly by the seat of your pants. Nevertheless, it’s wiser to wait a few days before making your move.

Pisces Horoscope

(Feb 19 – Mar 20)

It’s nearly impossible to know how others see you today because your self-image can be quite distorted by the shape-shifting Mars-Neptune conjunction in your imaginative sign. You might attempt to hide your inner turbulence, thinking that your day will be easier if others are unaware of your anxiety. However, the truth is that revealing your vulnerability could open the door to deeper friendships and increased intimacy.

Current Moon Phase for February 4th – Last Quarter Moon

Last Quarter Moon

(waning/40% illumination)

The time of reaping is at hand. There is a feeling of completion infused into the atmosphere during the Last Quarter Moon. The opportunity opens to recognize how far you’ve come in various parts of your life. This is not a good time for new beginnings, but rather a reflective period suited to evaluating how you have been using your time and what has been accomplished. Issues of authority may arise. This Moon phase supports taking responsibility for actively tying up the loose ends of projects that are already underway.

Unwanted Habit Spell

To eliminate an unwanted habit, make a poppet of yourself out of cloth, straw, or a carved candle.

Make symbols or words on it to indicate what you want to release forever, allowing anger to build within you that you have practiced this unwanted behavior. Call upon Pluto or Hecate to assist your resolve to fully carry out change in you life.

Using a safe container such as an iron cauldron or metal bowl, anoint the poppet with a few drops of oil of myrrh, pennyroyal, rosemary, or rue, and then carefully set it on fire, visualizing the release of your unwanted habit or trait forever.

Burn the poppet to ashes, and then take the ashes to a place where you have no need to be at any time soon. Bury it, turn firmly, and walk away. Don’t look back.

T is for Tonic

T

Tonic

Tonic waters containing the energies of the Moon embody very powerful healing benefits that bring integral balance and wholeness throughout the body, mind and soul. Clear quartz crystal catalyses the absorption of lunar energies as well as amplifies the healing benefits.

Wait for a clear night, on or right before the Full Moon. Put your crystal in a clear glass and cover with one cup of purified water.

At sundown, place the glass out of doors in a moonlit place (cover the glass with clear plastic wrap). Remove the glass at dawn. The water is now filled with the Moon’s energy. Drink the tonic every morning to prepare for the day.

T is for Talismans

T

Talismans

Cleanse all talismans in salt for forty-eight hours and then provide energy and
intent. The intent must not run counter to the talisman’s traditional significance.

Talismans must be concealed to retain their effectiveness, and should be worn on
your person, at the afflicted area. For example, earrings for ear disorders, or at the navel or on the belt for stomach disorders.

A message is reinforced with caresses or strokes.

Some talismans may consist of written words, on parchment if possible, though
any paper will do.

Whenever possible, talismans should be made at the appropriate phase of the
moon.

If the intent is to strengthen, the moon should be waxing.

If the intent is to remove a disorder, the moon should just past full.

The shape and nature of the object are important in that it’s difficult to cast
the message into a seemingly inappropriate object.
