Homeopathy

Homeopathy

Homeopathy, from the greek word homoios meaning like or similar and pathos
meaning suffering was developed and given a scientific basis by Dr. Samuel
Hahnemann in the late 1700’s.  The basic principle of Homeopathy is
“similia similibus curentur” or “let likes be cured by likes”.  In
conventional medicine we are taught to think in terms of disease character-
ized by certain symptoms and the suppression of these symptoms as the cure.
Homeopathy, on the other hand, see the symptoms as evidence that the body
is working in a healthy way to overcome an unhealthy condition.  Cure in
homeopathic terms a restoration of normal internal stability in the
organism (homeostasis).  This is accomplished, not by opposing the natural
efforts of the body reflected in the symptoms, but by stimulating the
body’s own self healing power.  This is accomplished by administering
homeopathic medicines.

Homeopathic medicines are prepared in a unique way from fresh plant, animal,
or mineral sources.  In the case of sunstances that are insoluble, one
part of the original substance is mixed with nine parts of an inert medium,
usually lactose,  This is then triturated (ground) and tabletized.  The first
trituration results in a 1X potency and each additional trituration consist-
ing of one part of the previous potency and nine parts of lactose produces
the next potency (i.e. 2X, 3X, 4X etc.).  In the case of soluble substances
such as plants, a “mother” tincture is made by macerating fresh plant
material and then mixing this with alcohol and water.  Exact formulas are
contained in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoea.  After the prescribed period of
time, the resulting mixture is filtered  and the liquid is then the mother
tincture.  This liquid is made more potent in a step by step process
requiring the addition of alcohol in a nine to one ratio..  This is then
succussed, and so on for successive potencies.  This method is thought to
increase the effective surface area of the healing substances which in turn
stimulates an increase in the self healing power of the organism.  It is
important to realize that homeopathic potency is not just a highly diluted
solution but one made by a prescribed procedure of serial dilution and
succussion.

In using homeopathic medicines care should be taken that it is taken when
the mouth is clean, that is not contaminanted with food, tobacco, tooth-
paste, etc.  Coffee is a antedotal to most homeopathic medications, that
is, it will cancel out the effect you get from the medicine.  The remedies
should be taken at least 15 mins. before or after eating.  They should
be held in the mouth, in order to facilitate the active substances to
be absorbed directly into the blood stream via the mucus membranes in
the mouth, thereby avoiding destruction by gastric acid in the stomach.

There are two different schools of thought in homeopathic medicine, one is
to treat the symptoms as they occur the other is method is to take a very
careful and complete history to develop a picture of the patient, his/her
constitution, and the ‘root’ of the problem.  The constitutional then
prescibes remedies not necessarily based on your current symptoms, but
on your overall ‘picture’… constitutional homeopaths argue that this
is the true way to heal a person.  When being treated by a doctor of
homeopathy, you could be given dilutions of a millionth potency (1,000,000X)
which can cause a temporary worsening of your symptoms as your body clears
itself of your illness.  The doctor will look to see if your symptoms are
occuring in reverse order. (i.e. say you had a skin rash, then developed
allergies, then developed asthma…the doctor would look to clear the asthma
first, then see the allergies clear up, finally you might develop the skin
rash you originally had which would be neutralized rather than ‘driven into
your body’ by various topical creams and/or cortisone).

Homeopathic remedies are quite safe to use.  The dilutions that are avail-
able over the counter (1X to 30X), will gently affect your system without
causing the reaction a higher potency might.  They are very handy to have
at home and work quite well on children. Homeopathy is very popular in
Europe, approximately 35% of the people in France see a homeopathic
physician.  The Queen of England’s personal physician is a homeopath.

If you are interested in learning more about homeopathy, a good book is
THE COMPLETE BOOK OF HOMEOPATHY by Michael Weiner and Kathleen Goss (Bantam).
There are many other educational organizations and pharmaceutical houses
devoted to homeopathy and they are a great source of information (the are
listed in the appendix of the afore mentioned book).

Safety With Herbs

Safety With Herbs

I want to talk to you about Safety. There are a lot of common misconceptions out there regarding herbal healing, and I hope with this to be able to clear some of those up. Safety with any treatment is essential for overall health and well-being, whether it be allopathic or alternative in nature.

Herbs Are Medicine!! They should be treated with the very same respect that most of us give to prescription drugs. Many herbs can be harmful in large or prolonged dosages, as can most anything in this life, I might add. Many herbs can be addictive after long term improper use. Some are poisonous. Some can have toxic side effects if not properly balanced with herbs that counteract those effects. They should not ever be used indiscriminately without the proper guidance of a health care professional. They should not ever be used on a daily basis without the proper guidance of a health care professional. Many people feel that just because herbs are natural, they can’t be hurt by them. Nothing can be further from the truth.

More Is Not Better!! Many people feel that if a little makes me feel better, a lot will make me feel fantastic. This is not the case with herbs. Dosages need to be carefully controlled, as with any medicine. You wouldn’t swallow a whole bottle of antibiotics at one time to kill a bacterial infection. Apply the same caution to herbal medicines. It is possible to overdose! Herbs work slowly, with the body and its own natural defenses. You must give herbs time to work before changing your dosages. In this modern world of a “pill for everything”, folks have come to expect instant cures, instant relief. You should note that with chronic illness, even prescription drugs take time to work. The same applies with herbal medicines. Give them time to work. Support them with a proper diet, with exercise, and with proper attention to yourself. If the herbs aren’t working for you, then you either have the wrong combinations, the wrong dosages, or you aren’t adhering to a proper healing regimen. Contact a health care professional for guidance as to what works for you.

One Dose Does Not Fit All!! You wouldn’t give a small child the same amount of cough syrup you give an adult. The same applies with herbal medicines. The dose must fit the individual. The dosages need to be based on the illness treated, your past and present medical history, your age, your weight, and several other factors. Combinations must be chosen so as not to interfere with any specifics with your particular body, and so as not to further aggravate that which is being treated. A health care professional can help you choose the proper combinations and dosages for your unique body and health concerns.

Tell Your Doctor What You Are Taking!! You wouldn’t hide the fact that you are a smoker or a drinker or have a heart condition from your physician. You shouldn’t hide the fact that you are using herbal medicines, either. Some herbs can have serious adverse reactions when improperly mixed with prescription drugs. Just because they are natural doesn’t mean there can’t be reactions! Many chemical drugs are derived from healing plant constituents. So you could be causing a serious problem for yourself if you are getting far too much of something that is supposed to be helping you. There is no reason to hide. Herbal healing is becoming much more mainstream today, and many physicians are learning about herbs as medicine. If yours isn’t, then help educate him or her. Or find a doctor that can help you work with your herbs. Most communities have herbal professionals, naturopathic doctors, Chinese Medicine practitioners, and other professionals that are trained in the proper uses of the healing herbs. Seek one out before you make some major mistakes with your precious body.

LET'S TALK WITCH – CAUTIONS & CONSIDERATIONS OF USING HERBS

LET’S TALK WITCH – CAUTIONS & CONSIDERATIONS OF USING HERBS

It would be pretty irresponsible to start taking herbs with little or no knowledge of herbal remedial treatments. By not taking the time to consider all the factors and seek advice you could be putting your health at serious risk.

For instance, women who are pregnant should be careful of the herbs they take because their baby may not be strong enough or sufficiently formed to handle the effects of such a nutrient and this can put the health of the baby and in fact the pregnancy in danger.

When compared to the synthetic medications your doctor may prescribe for you, herbal medications usually do have fewer side effects, if any at all, but again this reaction has to do with the individual person taking the herbs. For example one person may drink herbal tea with mint in it and have no problems at all whereas another person may do the same and develop a skin rash.

It is these risk factors which make it important to educate yourself before you decide to take herbs of any form and then you should test the herb for a few days at a diluted dosage before using it at its full concentration so that any adverse effects are mild rather than severe.

People who are diabetic should not be taking certain herbs; some herbs should not be taken when on certain medications and sometimes the combining of certain herbs will achieve a negative result. There are many rules which people neglect to learn before they jump into the herbal world with both feet. Take the time to do the research, find a reputable source of information you can trust, and learn what you can about herbal remedies so you can use them safely and without regret. It is your health; take the time to learn so you can take responsibility for it.

Natural Sinus Remedy

Natural Sinus Remedy

There are other ways to deal with your sinus problems–naturally.

Millions of people in the United States suffer from sinusitis or sinus problems. The typical reaction to sinus problems is to treat them with antihistimines and decongestants. Pills can be avoided, and so can expensesif sinusitis is treated naturally.

Boxes of pills may cost anywhere from $2.99-$4.00. And if you repeatedly have sinus congestion and have to keep taking pills, you’re obviously going to be purchasing a box every couple of weeks (even though you are told not to on the box–you’re supposed to consult your physician after two weeks of persistent problems). But, do most of us do this?

If you have acute sinusitis, and have been to the doctor for it, and no other remedies have worked for you, try treating the symptoms naturally next time. If you fear having surgery, or and don’t want to be on antibiotics, take a look at these suggestions. There’s a potpourri of ways to deal with sinusitus and its symptoms:

Vaporizer

Vaporizers may be purchased in almost any department store or pharmacy. Typically, you have to use remedies such as menthol and eucalyptus with the vaporizers (in the water). Solutions may be bought where the vaporizers are sold.

Cool Air Mister

Cool Air Misters add water and moisture to the air; you usually fill them with water. These are good for very dry areas of the house or basements. Cool air misters must be constantly filled with fresh water, and the filters must be changed for maximum benefits.

Air Conditioner

In the summer, when it’s hot and stuffy, try using the air conditioner for your sinuses. You’d be surprised at how it not only cools you off, but improves your breathing immensely. Also, if you can avoid it, stay indoors in the springtime, away from the blooming trees and flowers and get into the house with your air conditioner turned on low.

Medicated Vapor Rub

Medicated vapor rubs may be purchased at almost any store carrying medications. They may be used alone or with vaporizers. Sometimes, it’s effective to use them on and around your nose and sinus areas before bed; never use them inside of your nose or mouth.

Saline/Ocean Nasal Spray

Saline or ocean nasal spray may be purchased at any cosmetic store in the medication isle. Look for the ones that are all natural (containing no medicine). These are very effective if used often enough. Sometimes, they’re a bit unpleasant smelling and tasting, but work almost immediately.

Plenty of Water Before Bed

Water is essential at all times, but drinking water throughout the day and mostly before bed seems to keep your sinuses in check and clear throughout the night into the early morning.

Other Sinus Remedies

Some alternative sinus remedies include the following: eucalyptus oil, rosemary, and lemongrass (natural essenses/oils). These may be purchased at any holistic heath shoppe or vitamin store.

Soups, Spices and Hot Stuff

Anything that you can slurp that is hot and spicy (or contains garlic, pepper, or horseradish root, etc.) is usually very effective in the draining of sinuses. Try it sometime. You’ll be surprised at how fast you have to run and get some tissues!

Natural Remedies for Lowering Blood Pressure

Natural Remedies for Lowering Blood Pressure

  • Shelley Stonebrook

High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is an incredibly common condition, and millions worldwide take pharmaceutical drugs to treat it. While you should always consult with your health care practitioner before changing any treatment plans, two natural remedies to consider are garlic (or other alliums) and hibiscus.

Various studies reported in the Indian Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics concluded that both onions and garlic in the diet lowered blood cholesterol levels. Studies in Germany and in the United States have produced similar results. Cholesterol builds up in fatty plaques on the artery walls, and so it is believed to be a major factor in the onset of heart disease. Anything that reduces high cholesterol levels helps to keep the heart healthy.

Recent studies show that hibiscus tea can lower blood pressure as effectively as some standard hypertension drugs can. Hibiscus is widely consumed around the world as a ruby-colored, lemony beverage (it’s the main ingredient in Red Zinger tea). Hibiscus is safe and, unlike most blood pressure drugs, rarely causes side effects.

An added bonus about these two remedies? Garlic and hibiscus plants can be grown in much of the United States, so you can actually grow your own blood pressure medicine.

The Herban Corner – For Your Health

The Herban Corner – For Your Health

Insomnia – Chamomile is a very soothing tea to put you to sleep if you’re having trouble in that area. And a magickal remedy is to take garden violet, put it in a silver bag under your pillow, and then lay back and wait for the desired effect: sleep. Dill and dandelion also work on insomnia. Orange and passion flower are other plants that take away the sleeplessness you experience. Primrose and rosemary also may be used in a tea to take away your insomnia but I prefer that you put shavings from a white birch into a white muslin bag and wear it around your neck, or place it under your pilow. You should doze off almost immediately. Wild morjoram and sweet marjoram may be made into teas, too, and you may wish to make a poultice of lettuce and hops and mother of thyme to cover your eyes. Sleep should be induced soon after applying it.
.
Relieving Facial Tension –  Every night before you go to sleep, sit in your bed and start making faces — just as small children enjoy doing, make all kinds of faces, good, bad, ugly, beautiful, so the whole face and the musculature start moving. Make sounds — nonsense sounds will do — and sway, just for ten to fifteen minutes and then go to sleep.

In the morning, before you take your bath, again stand before the mirror and for ten minutes make faces. Standing before the mirror will help: you will be able to see and you will be able to respond
