The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a First Quarter phase. This phase occurs roughly 7 days after the New Moon when the moon is one quarter of the way through its orbit around the earth. Exactly half the moon will be illuminated and half dark. On the day of the First Quarter phase the moon is high overhead at sunset and is visible until mid-night when it sets in the west. The First Quarter phase is a one-day event and in the following days enters a Waxing Gibbous phase becoming more illuminated each day until the Full Moon.

Visit the November 2024 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.

Today’s First Quarter Phase

The First Quarter on November 9 has an illumination of 55%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On November 9 the Moon is 7.86 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

8 November 2024 Current Moon Phase and Planetary Positions for the Southern Hemisphere

Source: nineplanets.org

The current moon phase for November 8th, 2024 is the Waning Crescent phase.

On this day, the moon is 6.76 days old and 41.54% illuminated with a tilt of 114.004°. The approximate distance from Earth to the moon is 380,565.61 km and the moon sign is Aquarius.

The Moon phase for November 8th, 2024 is a Waning Crescent phase. This is the phase where the moon is less than 50% illuminated but has not yet reached 0% illumination (which would be a New Moon).

In this part of the moon cycle, it is getting closer and closer to the Sun as viewed from Earth and the night side of the Moon is facing earth with a decreasingly thin crescent being illuminated.

The waning (shrinking) crescement Moon will rise at around midnight, transit the meridian after sunrise, before setting after noon. This phase is best viewed 1-2 hours before sunrise and is a great time to see the features of the Moon’s surface. Along the illuminated crescent you can see the craters and mountains of the moon casting long shadows.

The Waxing Gibbous phase, like all moon phases, will last for just over 7 days. The actual length will vary because of the elliptical shaped orbit of the moon. During this Waxing Gibbous phase the moon will rise in the east in the mid- to late-afternoon and will be high in the eastern sky at sunset.

Assuming it’s a clear night, the Waxing Gibbous moon will then be visible through most of the night before setting just before sunrise.

Fun fact: the illuminated side of a waning crescent moon is always pointed eastwards, towards the sunrise.

7 November 2024 Current Moon Phase and Planetary Positions for the Southern Hemisphere

Source: nineplanets.org

The current moon phase for November 7th, 2024 is the Waxing Crescent phase.

On this day, the moon is 5.72 days old and 30.99% illuminated with a tilt of 119.371°. The approximate distance from Earth to the moon is 385,338.86 km and the moon sign is Capricorn.

The Moon phase for November 7th, 2024 is a Waxing Crescent phase. This is the phase where the moon started to become visible again after the New Moon.

In this part of the moon cycle, the Moon is moving away from the Sun and is becoming more and more illuminated by sunlight. In this phase, the moon will go from 0.1% to 49.9% illuminated before reaching the First Quarter phase.

In the Waxing Crescent phase the moon rises before noon in the east, transits the meridian before sunset, before setting in the west before midnight.

The Waxing Crescent phase, like all moon phases, will last for just over 7 days. The actual length will vary because of the elliptical shaped orbit of the moon. The moon is close to the Sun in the sky and the right edge will become brighter as it approaches 50% illumination and the First Quarter phase

Fun fact: although only a small part of the Moon is illuminated in the Waxing Crescent phase, you can still sometimes see the rest of moon as faintly visible. This is known as “earthshine” or Da Vinci glow and is a result of sunlight being reflected off the Earth and back to the Moon.

3 November 2024 Current Moon Phase and Planetary Positions for the Southern Hemisphere

Source: nineplanets.org

The current moon phase for November 3rd, 2024 is the Waxing Crescent phase.

On this day, the moon is 1.65 days old and 3.27% illuminated with a tilt of 148.589°. The approximate distance from Earth to the moon is 399,824.13 km and the moon sign is Sagittarius.

The Moon phase for November 3rd, 2024 is a Waxing Crescent phase.

The 8 Lunar Phases

There are 8 lunar phases the Moon goes through in its 29.53 days lunar cycle. The 4 major Moon phases are Full Moon, New Moon, First Quarter and Last Quarter. Between these major phases, there are 4 minor ones: the Waxing Crescent, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous and Waning Crescent. For more info on the Moon Cycle and on each phase check out Wikipedia Lunar Phase page.

The Moon’s current phase for today and tonight is a Waxing Crescent Phase. Best seen in the west after the sun dips below the horizon at sunset. This is the first Phase after the New Moon and is a great time to see the features of the moon’s surface. The moon is close to the sun in the sky and mostly dark except for the right edge of the moon which becomes brighter as the days get closer to the next phase which is a First Quarter with a 50% illumination.

Visit the November 2024 Moon Phases Calendar to see all the daily moon phase for this month.

Today’s Waxing Crescent Phase

The Waxing Crescent on November 2 has an illumination of 1%. This is the percentage of the Moon illuminated by the Sun. The illumination is constantly changing and can vary up to 10% a day. On November 2 the Moon is 1.03 days old. This refers to how many days it has been since the last New Moon. It takes 29.53 days for the Moon to orbit the Earth and go through the lunar cycle of all 8 Moon phases.

The current moon phase for November 1st, 2024 is the New Moon phase.

On this day, the moon is -0.42 days old and 0.03% illuminated with a tilt of -80.004°. The approximate distance from Earth to the moon is 404,176.74 km and the moon sign is Scorpio.

The Moon phase for November 1st, 2024 is the New Moon phase. In this phase, the moon is positioned between the Sun and Earth and is 0% illuminated (i.e the moon is not visible to us in the sky).

Due to the alignment of the Sun, the Moon and Earth, the side of the moon that faces Earth is left in complete darkness. In technical terms this is referred to as a conjunction or Syzygy.

Also, during the New Moon phase, the moon rises and sets at around the same time as the Sun. This brings to the moon too close to the glare of the Sun for us to see the moon with the naked eye.

Fun fact: The moon can’t emit its own light, it can only reflect the light from the Sun’s rays. Since there is no sunlight during the New Moon phase there is nothing to reflect, so the moon becomes completely dark and unable to be seen in the sky.

The current moon phase for October 31st, 2024 is the Waning Crescent phase.

On this day, the moon is 28.28 days old and 1.32% illuminated with a tilt of -35.375°. The approximate distance from Earth to the moon is 405,488.11 km and the moon sign is Libra.

The Moon phase for October 31st, 2024 is a Waning Crescent phase.

26 October 2024 Current Moon Phase and Planetary Positions for the Southern Hemisphere

Source: nineplanets.org

The current moon phase for October 26th, 2024 is the Waning Crescent phase.

On this day, the moon is 23.14 days old and 32.15% illuminated with a tilt of -26.627°. The approximate distance from Earth to the moon is 399,408.12 km and the moon sign is Leo.

The Moon phase for October 26th, 2024 is a Waning Crescent phase.

23 October 2024 Current Moon Phase and Planetary Positions for the Southern Hemisphere

Source: nineplanets.org

The current moon phase for October 23rd, 2024 is the Waning Gibbous phase.

On this day, the moon is 20.04 days old and 63.1% illuminated with a tilt of -42.643°. The approximate distance from Earth to the moon is 383,567.93 km and the moon sign is Cancer.

The Moon phase for October 23rd, 2024 is a Waning Gibbous phase. This is the first phase after the Full Moon where the illumination of the moon decreases each day until it reaches 50% (the Last Quarter phase).

The waning (shrinking) gibbous Moon will rise after sunset in the east, transit the meridian after midnight, before setting after sunrise in the west.

During this phase, the illumination of the moon will go down from 99.% to 50.1%. Technically, the phase starts as soon as the Full Moon has passed, but it can be difficult to calculate and differentiate the first stage of a Waning Gibbous Moon from a Full Moon when 98-99% of the Moon’s surface is illuminated.

Fun fact: the word Gibbous was first used in the 14th century and comes from the latin word gibbosus which means humpbacked.
