A Garnet Meditation

Garnet, the birthstone for January, is also a great all-purpose gem to use as an aid during meditation. It can be used to help make decisions or bring order to your life.

For the meditation, you’ll need a garnet gem or a smooth garnet stone. A string of garnet prayer beads would also work. Select a deep red garnet or one with a brown tint. You’ll also need a burgundy candle. Begin by lighting the candle, then relax and center. Hold the garnet and breathe deeply. Concentrate on your concern and then hold the garnet to your heart. You’ll begin to receive messages. Let them come, even if they don’t make sense. When youfeel ready to return to your everyday world, extinguish the candle. Thank the garnet for its help. Your thoughts should be clearer now so you can make any decisions.

This week we are walking a tight rope balancing heart and mind — logic versus emotional sentiments. By midweek, balance will be achieved. (“I want a hot dog. Make me one with everything!”) However, Wednesday is also the only Full Moon all year in productive and useful Capricorn. It will make us feel more personally in charge of our lives. We don’t need the approval of others; instead, we have our own inner validation. I once heard a wise teacher say, “If you think you know something and you don’t – that’s arrogance. If you think you know something and you do – that’s confidence.” Dale Carnegie said, “Action breeds confidence. If you want to conquer fear, don’t sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” (Hmmm, does this mean I have to get dressed?)

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Your home scene might be interrupted this week with unusual surprises and events. Renovations and repairs along with unexpected visitors are some examples. A family member might have an unusual idea? Or perhaps, a family member will do something a bit dazzling or different? Meanwhile, an element of confusion will be at play with siblings, relatives, neighbours and daily contacts. This could make you underestimate a situation or not “get” what’s going on. (Usually, you are quick to see what’s happening.) Be aware that your ability to interpret what’s happening around you might not be hundred percent reliable. By the end of the week, entertaining at home will be fun! Make plans.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This is an active, busy week because Mars in your sign is boosting your energy and keeping you busy. But expect your daily routine to change. Oh yes! You might meet someone who sets a chain of events in motion that you didn’t expect. Something out of the blue might occur. Whatever happens, you can handle this because Mars is supporting you. Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Be careful because there is a tricky aspect happening this week: Venus in your sign is having a confusing dance with fuzzy Neptune. This could make you unrealistic in your dealings with others but you’re not aware of it. For example, you might be disappointed because someone doesn’t live up to your ideals. (Note: Unexpressed expectations almost always lead to disappointment.) In one way, Venus will make you seek out romantic moments with loved ones, candlelit dinners with romantic vibes. But it might also create a confused situation that leads to a breakup. Meanwhile, impulse shopping will take place. Fortunately, you’re happy about your possessions and financial matters by the end of the week. Perhaps a special purchase?

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This continues to be a strong week because the Sun and Mercury are in your sign. In fact, Mercury will get an electric jolt from Uranus this week, triggering new discoveries, new encounters and exciting new events. You will impulsively do things like suddenly reaching out to others. Caution about rash, impulsive decisions, especially because with Venus hiding in your chart, you might feel confused about a relationship, especially a secret love affair. You might even be deceived! Therefore, think carefully before you make important decisions because somethings in your world are puzzling. (“No matter what I do to kid-proof the house – they keep getting in!”)

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

This week is weird. Both the Sun and Mercury are stirring up your subconscious more than usual. You might revert to childhood behaviour patterns that you thought were long gone. (“These are mine!”) This can mean your actions might work against you and suddenly, you’re your own worst enemy. (“Really? I’ve had worse.”) Beware of sudden, “bright” ideas that might not be so bright, even though they initially dazzle with promise. Meanwhile, relations with an artistic person might be confusing even deceiving. You’re not sure how to handle things. You might be disappointed in this person. (Leos have high standards for their friends.) Fortunately, by the weekend, you’re happy. There’s sunshine in your soul.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You’re popular! Everyone wants to see your face, especially younger people. You also look good to bosses, parents, teachers and the police. (Major bonus!) Fortunately, you’re full of bright, creative ideas that impress friends and member of groups to which you belong. You might start off on a new path or suddenly embrace new goals that are bold and different. However, something to do with a parent or a boss might confuse you or end up in a misunderstanding. For some, this misunderstanding could lead to a breakup of the relationship. Too many assumptions? Fortunately, by the weekend, opportunities to schmooze with others abound. “Come out to the coast. This week you are admired, which means you have an advantage. If you ask someone for something, whatever you say will be well received. (Good to know.) Furthermore, you’re full of bright, clever ideas that you can suggest to a boss or someone in power. Nevertheless, be aware that travel plans or something to do with foreign countries might be confusing this week. Something might promise more than it can deliver. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You are still keen to travel and do anything that will broaden your horizons. You’re full of bright, unusual ideas, which means you might travel impulsively. Others will experience sudden changes related to the media, publishing opportunities or something to do with medicine or the law. Hopefully, whatever occurs will benefit you. The area where you have to be astute and wary is anything to do with financial matters with others. This includes inheritances, debt, taxes and insurance disputes. Be cautious in these dealings. Be sure to do your due diligence and check things out because things are not as they appear. Plan on opportunities to travel or do something different and exciting by the end of the week. (“I barely had time to pack my bag.”)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’re percolating with ideas about financial negotiations, shared property or anything that you hold jointly with someone else. (Taxes, debt and insurance issues.) At a deeper level, you might have an epiphany about an inner psychological truth. For example, you might see a new way to be a better person. Or you might have a profound conversation with someone? In the Center of the Cat’s Eye Nebula

Explanation: Three thousand light-years away, a dying star throws off shells of glowing gas. This image from the Hubble Space Telescope reveals the Cat’s Eye Nebula (NGC 6543), to be one of the most complex planetary nebulae known. Spanning half a light-year, the features seen in the Cat’s Eye are so complex that astronomers suspect the bright central object may actually be a binary star system. The term planetary nebula, used to describe this general class of objects, is misleading. Although these objects may appear round and planet-like in small telescopes, high resolution images with large telescopes reveal them to be stars surrounded by cocoons of gas blown off in the late stages of stellar evolution. Gazing into this Cat’s Eye, astronomers may well be seeing more than detailed structure, they may be seeing the fate of our Sun, destined to enter its own planetary nebula phase of evolution … in about 5 billion years.
