Deities Associated WIth Wednesday – Athena

Athena is a warrior/maiden goddess of wisdom, war, crafts, and poetry. In her war aspect, she is known as Pallas Athena. Some of the more familiar symbols for Athena are the javelin, spear, shield, and plumed helmet. She was usually depicted with an owl perched on her shoulder, symbolizing wisdom. There is some debate over Athena’s origins. gins. Traditional mythology says that she sprang full grown and ready to rumble from her father Zeus’s head, while another school of thought believes that she may have been originally a Mycenaean goddess of home and hearth.

Athena was called “bright eyed” and was a patroness of women’s rights and freedom. dom. She also presided over craftsmen, potters, weavers, and spinners. To round things up, Athena was also associated with writing, music, wisdom, justice, and peace. In this aspect, her symbols are the owl and the olive tree. In a Homeric hymn to Athena, she is described as a “glorious goddess, gray-eyed, resourceful, and of implacable heart.” The birthday of Athena was celebrated on March 23. Her sacred city was, of course, Athens.

Meditate on Odin and see what you can discover about him. I wonder what sort of fabulous and fascinating magickal wisdom you will uncover? Odin is a shaman, after all; he may appear in many guises and faces. I guarantee that he will make you laugh at yourself before he is through with you, but you will learn. It’s up to you what you do with that knowledge. Will you let it shapeshift into wisdom?

Wednesday is the wild and wily day of the week, so try to go with the flow; don’t fight the quirky energies of the day. Most importantly, follow your heart, and always keep a good sense of humor, because of Wednesdays you will really need it.

The Magickal Day of Wednesday

 

Wednesday is named for Woden himself, although the Romans called it dies Mercurii. This is a day associated with the color purple, the planet Mercury, and the metal quicksilver – which is also called mercury. See a pattern here?

When it comes to deities… yes, Mercury! However, there are a few other gods associated with Wednesday, including Odin and Hermes, Athena, and Lugh. Gemstones like adventurine and agate come in handy as well, as do plants such as aspen trees, lilies, lavender and even ferns.

Business and job-related issues, communication, loss and debt, traveling, and journeys are all tied in to Wednesday. This is a good day to do a working to open up lines of communication – especially if your own actions are preventing you from being an effective speaker or listener. Go someplace new or return to an old favorite stomping ground, step up your game, and settle up your accounts.

Sirus shines magnitude -1.5, a “young Moon,” and other bright things to look for in the sky this week.

With an age of 4.5 billion years, “young” might not seem an appropriate word to describe our Moon. But tonight, you have a nice opportunity to see what astronomers call a “young Moon” — a slender crescent visible in the early evening sky. With New Moon having occurred two nights ago, only 5 percent of our satellite’s disk appears illuminated after sunset tonight. You should notice an ashen light faintly illuminating the Moon’s dark side. This is “earthshine,” sunlight reflected by Earth that reaches the Moon and then reflects back to our waiting eyes. With binoculars, scan some 10° to the Moon’s lower right and you also should pick up the glow from Mercury, which shines brightly at magnitude –0.6.

Thursday, March 30

The waxing crescent Moon climbs significantly higher in the evening sky with each passing day, and tonight it serves as a guide to ruddy Mars. The planet stands about 7° (approximately one binocular field) to the Moon’s lower right. The pair appears nearly 20° high in the west once twilight fades to darkness and doesn’t set until after 10 p.m. local daylight time. The Red Planet shines at magnitude 1.5 among the background stars of Aries the Ram.

The Moon reaches perigee, the closest point in its orbit around Earth, at 8:32 a.m. EDT. It then lies 226,088 miles (363,853 kilometers) away from us.

This evening, the waxing Moon sits on the western edge of the Hyades star cluster in Taurus the Bull. The 20-percent-lit crescent lies below and a little to the right of 1st-magnitude Aldebaran, the orange sun that marks the upper left corner of the V-shaped Hyades. In reality, however, the star is a foreground object that only appears along the same line of sight as the cluster.

Saturday, April 1

Mercury reaches greatest elongation at 6 a.m. EDT, and tonight marks the peak of its best evening apparition of 2017. The innermost planet lies 19° east of the Sun and stands 9° high in the western sky 45 minutes after sunset. It shines at magnitude –0.2 and shows up easily against the darkening sky. If you can’t spy Mercury right away, sweep the area with binoculars. A view of the inner world through a telescope reveals an 8″-diameter disk that appears 39 percent lit.

Sunday, April 2

After passing between the Sun and Earth just eight days ago, Venus already appears conspicuous in the predawn sky. It rises an hour before the Sun and climbs 6° above the eastern horizon 30 minutes later. The planet shines so brightly, at magnitude –4.2, that it shows up easily in the brightening twilight. A telescope will deliver spectacular views of the inner world’s 57″-diameter disk, which appears just 3 percent lit.

A World Without Witches…..

 

Can you imagine a world without witches,

A world with all people the same?

Where the only known dragons are hiding in books,

And children are terribly tame?

A world without magic would be sad indeed.

I cannot imagine the pain

Of having a world where there’s no Santa Claus,

Where wizards are searched for in vain.

Can you imagine a world without spells,

That science and businesses run?

And think of the sadness a unicorn feels

When he no longer plays in the sun.

Can you imagine a world without witches,

No elves and no magical pools?

And can you imagine how dull it would be

If all that we had were the schools?

I cannot imagine a world without witches,

A world with no magical wand.

A world without beauty, or even a dream,

Or a wood sprite of whom to be fond.

They say I should grow up and be more mature,

Like a normal adult ought to do.

But I’d rather, at night, go to dance with a witch,

And I’ll bet that you feel that way, too.
