Aries

Aries Horoscope
Aries

A New Moon occurs in your sign this morning, dear Aries, and it’s the time for a fresh start. While you can feel energized today, it can take a few days for more clarity and certainty of your direction. It’s time to recreate your personality as you’d truly like it to be, and you have all of the power to do so. The month is not without its challenges, and in fact, you’re likely to encounter some hindrances and delays, particularly once Mars, your ruler, is retrograde from April 17th forward. You can be at your most impulsive now, and while you possess tremendous energy, you need to weigh all sides of a situation before pushing forward. Pace yourself, but do consider making changes that reflect or alter your personal needs, plans, and manner. Your desires are changing in important and sometimes surprising ways, and you may be in the mood for some form of makeover, which is not necessarily all physical. Outworn or self-limiting attitudes need to be left behind.

Taurus

Taurus

This morning, a new cycle begins that lights up your private life, dear Taurus, with a New Moon occurring in your solar twelfth house. Focus should be on replenishment and rest, and you need both. Enjoy some anonymity now, as you’re moving into a period in which you’re likely to receive a lot of attention. Keep in mind that frustration can erupt seemingly from nowhere, but is actually rooted in issues that you have buried and haven’t yet confronted or resolved. You may be saying goodbye to something, figuratively speaking, and clearing the decks for new beginnings. This lunation brings powerful feelings and intuition to the surface. While insights can be dramatic, try not to say the first thing that comes to your mind for the time being. Take the time to sort out your thoughts.

Gemini

Gemini

The New Moon this morning brings your social life into high focus, dear Gemini. Connections with friends and associates can inspire new interests, plans, ideals, and discoveries. Some of you will reconnect with an old pal in the weeks ahead. You may be mingling with different people, stepping out of your comfort zone just a little, and answering to the more inventive or rebellious side to your nature. You might choose to become more actively involved in your community, or to network and share some of your work, talents, and insights with associates. Surprising events surrounding a friend can occur now and this week. However, watch for impulsiveness today, and while you should definitely enjoy the enthusiasm you’re feeling now, avoid taking on too many commitments, as you may not have the energy or resources to follow through on all of them.

Cancer

Cancer

There is a New Moon occurring this morning in the first sign of the zodiac, dear Cancer, and at the top of your solar chart. This brings your professional life into high focus now and in coming weeks and a charge to your ambitions. It can also push you into the limelight – you may be creating quite a stir, and it’s unlikely that you can get away with very much at this time! Be aware of the impact you have on others, as it is strong, but don’t be afraid to do your own thing. You are becoming aware of new responsibilities as old plans and projects fall out of focus. The next few days are about taking action and shooting for the stars. However, it’s important not to take on more than you can handle, as energy levels can change going forward.

Leo

Leo

A New Moon occurs this morning and brings a charge of innovative energy to your adventure sector, dear Leo. This can motivate a desire to experience or lean something entirely new, adventurous, and off the beaten track. Your approach to the world is a little braver now, and discovery is a theme. Those of you looking to expand your education or to explore new perspectives might also become highly motivated to do so in the coming days. The emphasis is on activities that break you out of the usual routine and truly allow you to feel connected with life and spirit. You are bound to feel refreshed and open to learning, and while this is a good thing, do keep in mind that the New Moon is activating the Aries sector of your solar chart, and Aries’ ruler is Mars, which will retrograde in ten days. This means that you should probably pace yourself. Feel the inspiration but take things slowly rather than pushing things forward too quickly.

Virgo

Virgo Symbol/Glyph
Virgo

This morning’s New Moon brings a new focus into your world and the power to pursue new goals, dear Virgo. The weeks ahead bring opportunities to rid yourself of limiting attitudes, and to rework your attitudes toward life in empowering ways. Your insight into which aspects of yourself that you need to transform is stronger now. You’re also learning to accept others’ support during this cycle, or determined to sort out feelings of indebtedness. An event could take place that opens your eyes to the need for handling debts or shared resources more effectively. Financial and intimate matters are in focus, and while there can be challenges and obstacles involved, a take-charge attitude emerges. You can experience some insistent and unusual impulses coming from deep within. Some of you could be beginning a new intimate relationship, which comes up suddenly.

Libra

Libra Glyph-Symbol
Libra

The New Moon that occurs this morning can stimulate beginning anew, dear Libra. Attitudes that no longer serve you well need to go in order for you to take advantage of this opportunity to move forward in the relationship department. The desire or need to cooperate and merge with others is strong right now. It’s time to start fresh when it comes to close partnering, by donning a new attitude or by gathering the courage to make something new happen. Relationship needs are awakened, and unusual impulses can overcome you that push you into a new beginning of sorts. Expect the unexpected when it comes to others now. Your personal appeal skyrockets, and you are also more easily drawn to others.

Scorpio

Scorpio Symbol Glyph
Scorpio

With a New Moon occurring in your work and health sector this morning, dear Scorpio, you’re pumped up to make important changes to your regular daily routines. Circumstances are such that you need to take charge of your work and health habits, and new directions are likely. Unexpected changes at work can be unsettling at first, but if your attitude is strong, they can be seen as motivating nudges towards new and improved conditions. Watch for impulsiveness and impatience. You are likely to have extra energy for starting new work projects, health or fitness routines, helping out others, organizing your working environment, or for scheduling medical checkups. Try not to set your goals so high that they are unattainable and be sure to pace yourself, particularly as the ruler of this sector of your chart, Mars, will be turning retrograde in ten days, and you won’t want to be in the position of having too much on your plate.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius Glyph Symbol
Sagittarius

The New Moon that occurs this morning brings a pleasing blast of energy to your romance and pleasure sector, dear Sagittarius, and this means you are super-motivated to enjoy yourself and to express yourself creatively. You might find that you are answering to your impulses right now, and that you’re braver and more courageous than usual to pursue who and what you want. Be careful not to become over-confident when it comes to taking risks with your money, however. It’s also important not to take on too much. The ruler of this same sector of your chart, Mars, will turn retrograde on the 17th, and this can point to some delays, backtracking, changes of mind, or dipping energy levels, so be sure to avoid making too many commitments. However, honor your need to express yourself in unique and individual ways. Romantic and creative urges are strong, and desires may be surprising, different, and new. You may be drawn to explore new hobbies and forms of entertainment.

Capricorn

Capricorn Symbol/Glyph
Capricorn

A New Moon occurs this morning, dear Capricorn, and this points to a new beginning of sorts on the home front for you. Some of you will begin all-new projects that are designed to improve your living conditions, and some will be making plans to move or renovate. Most of you will be taking charge of your personal life, bringing it to the top of your priority list. Unexpected changes in your personal and home life may come about now, and they’re designed to buffet you into a new direction. Unusual or previously buried desires can emerge that spur you to find new ways to express yourself on the domestic front. Get busy on constructive projects or you’ll find that excess energy is wasted on restlessness. However, try not to take on too much so that you don’t end up feeling overwhelmed later, particularly as Mars, the ruler of your solar sector of home and family, will turn retrograde on the 17th.

Aquarius

Aquarius

A New Moon occurs this morning in the first sign of the zodiac and your solar third house, dear Aquarius, and you can expect everyday affairs to take up much of your time in the coming weeks. You may be discovering new interests or stepping up projects and studies that are already in progress. There can be interesting, unusual connections made with others in the coming days. It’s not the best period for concentrated efforts on one particular project or subject. Rather, it’s better suited for dabbling in various projects and keeping abreast of the goings-on around you. You can discover new or improved avenues for expressing yourself or for getting around. Unusual or unexpected events can surround your siblings and neighbors, or learning endeavors. News can come that steers you on a new course. Watch today that you aren’t too impulsive with your communications, and tame desires to take on too much. It’s not the best time for making big commitments.

Pisces

Pisces

A New Moon occurring this morning in your solar second house, dear Pisces, can point to new feelings of wanting to take charge of your earnings and to stand up for what you believe in. You are in a phase in which you are discovering your needs and wants, and you’re motivated to improve your ability to pursue these things. While you may be wrestling with (or totally intrigued by) unusual desires and wants today and in the next few days, you should become clearer about what steps you need to take to improve your finances and sense of security and/or abundance. Aiming for more financial independence is your best bet, as income from your own efforts brings the most significant feelings of satisfaction these days. Aim for more effective management of your resources.

Aries

Aries Horoscope
Aries

Mercury has now moved out of your sign and into your resources sector, dear Aries. This planet of communication will spend more time than usual here, until June 12th, due to a retrograde that will occur near the end of April. This is a time for sorting out business and financial matters. You’re interested in tangible progress in your work and you’re more inclined to think practically. A Sun-Pluto square later today can trigger insecurities and fears, and while you should recognize them, don’t let them rule your behavior. Tension about responsibilities and/or career matters can be hanging heavy in the air. You could be struggling with letting go of control or about making changes. People are not very inclined to put their cards on the table at the moment. While it can be difficult to do today, you may want to try to clear your head and let go with a New Moon set to occur tomorrow and bringing fresh energy for turning over a new leaf.

Taurus

Taurus

Mercury entered your sign last night, dear Taurus, and will transit Taurus for a longer time than usual, until June 12th. This is a time for speaking out and being heard, making independent or executive decisions, and communicating and connecting with others. You tend to be a tad restless with this energy in your life, and this pushes you to circulate, move about, and interact. It’s a time for learning new things, starting projects, and self-taught endeavors. Today, there can be some tension brewing, possibly over past mistakes, guilt, or buried frustrations that are emerging and affecting your mood. You could be dealing with a moral dilemma or a change of heart today. Philosophical disagreements can escalate rather easily today. This is in fact a time for considering new goals with a New Moon occurring tomorrow morning.

Gemini

Gemini

Mercury is now transiting your privacy sector, dear Gemini, and during this cycle that runs until June 12th, you tend to be more contemplative than communicative. You might also be somewhat hesitant about making decisions as you take more time to absorb and digest information before coming to conclusions. This can be a good time for seeing recent events from a different perspective. Relations can be a little tense with or among friends today, and tension may be more about power and control than the issues that are brought up. People can be temperamental. You may be a little conflicted about how deep your feelings run for someone. Tomorrow’s energies stimulate a strong desire to start fresh, particularly on a social level. Think about goals for friendships and networking that you may want to achieve over the coming weeks, and set your intentions with the New Moon tomorrow.

Cancer

Cancer

The planet of communication, Mercury, has just entered a very sociable, group-focused area of your chart, dear Cancer, and will move through that sector until June 12th. During this cycle, you’ll thrive on the exchange of ideas with friends – the more humanitarian, unbiased, unconventional, and future-oriented the better. You seek out others who stimulate your mind, and people tend to be drawn to you for the same reasons. It’s generally a strong time for meeting people, although with an upcoming retrograde there may be complications involved. Today, close relations and career-related connections can be heavy and loaded, however. Nobody seems to want to give a little, and this can lead to a stand-off. There can be a feeling of being blocked or thwarted. Take your time with new plans or initiatives. Today is better for letting go of things that are no longer serving you well, and tomorrow’s New Moon can redirect and energize you.

Leo

Leo

Mercury, the planet of communication, is now transiting your career and reputation sector, dear Leo, and will continue to influence this area of your solar chart until June 12th. Your thoughts frequently turn to professional matters, plans, and goals during this cycle. You are also more careful and perhaps guarded in your communications, as you feel especially accountable for what you say and how you say it – and you are! Today, it can be all too easy to become worked up over trivial or petty matters with a Sun-Pluto square. It’s unlikely that all of the strain is worth it. However, if it ultimately leads to illumination, then perhaps the end justifies the means. The issues that rile you up can be a symptom of something much deeper – of unresolved matters that likely have to do with power and control. Frustration can arise if you feel that you are not on top of your routine. Tomorrow’s New Moon will bring fresh energy for turning over a new leaf, so aim to center yourself today.

Virgo

Virgo Symbol/Glyph
Virgo

With Mercury now in your solar ninth house until June 12th, dear Virgo, you may be more frequently thinking and communicating about moral or philosophical issues and less interested in mundane, routine matters and details. You are more inclined to debate and defend your ideas. It’s easier for you to see the bigger picture during this cycle, and because Mercury is in harmony with your sign, you’re more easily understood and your ideas are received well. Today, there may be disagreements over money, intimacy, and power dynamics. It’s not the best time to lend something out or even to collect on a loan, although if it’s bothering you, it’s not something to dismiss. Simply leave it for a better day, when emotions are not running so high. There can be worries or fears of betrayal in love or friendship, but be careful not to allow them to drive your behavior. Be selective about what you allow to take center stage in your head right now. Find ways to put negative thinking behind you. Tomorrow’s New Moon is strong for turning over a new leaf.

Libra

Libra Glyph-Symbol
Libra

Mercury’s presence in your solar eighth house (since last evening) boosts your perceptive abilities, dear Libra. You are more able to talk about intimate, private, or complicated subject matter with objectivity and ease. This cycle lasts until June 12th. Conversations tend to be intense or heavy, yet you are also more able to remain detached enough to tackle tricky issues. You might find yourself questioning a lot of what you hear and possibly even being suspicious, however. You could also be playing detective at this time, as you can find it especially enjoyable to wrap your head around a good mystery or puzzle. Today, a Sun-Pluto square can point to some tension if you end up feeling stuck in the middle of other’s conflicts and issues. With the extremes you feel and see now, coming to the middle ground may be your best bet. Watch for automatic and compulsive behavior, particularly when it comes to your interactions with family or a partner. Find your center and try not to take yourself too seriously today. If you do, then learn from the frustration that seems to be bubbling up from within.

Scorpio

Scorpio Symbol Glyph
Scorpio

The planet of communication is moving through your partnership sector, dear Scorpio, and will do so until June 12th. Typically, Mercury spends only three weeks in a sign, but this time around, it’s almost twelve weeks. This is a time when you tend to seek out company, answers, opinions, and feedback. It’s not that you want others to make decisions for you. Instead, you tend to want to discuss matters with people in your life and your reaction to their feedback helps you to better understand your own needs and wants. You seek out others and they seek you. You stand to learn a lot through one-on-one conversations. Even so, with an upcoming retrograde you should be careful that you don’t live too much in the mind when it comes to your closest relationships. Today’s Sun-Pluto square can be a difficult one for your mood, but you can also learn a lot from it.
You are more sensitive to imbalances of power or people who seem to have a hidden agenda. You can experience some tension if you feel that your daily affairs are getting out of your control. Avoid thinking and analyzing situations too much, especially those things that are not serving you well.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius Glyph Symbol
Sagittarius

Mercury has just moved into your health and work sector, dear Sagittarius, and with the planet of communication here, there is likely to be a big emphasis on tending to your daily routines, work, and health programs until June 12th. You can have a lot on your mind during this cycle, and you’re mostly focused on practical details, routines, health, work, and everyday life. Today, the Moon is Balsamic with a New Moon occurring tomorrow morning. This means that today is better for closing up  projects and laying things to rest than starting new endeavors. However, a Sun-Pluto square can make it a little difficult to accept changes or to graciously let things go. Money and basic values can be tricky topics now. Airing a difficult topic or concern can lead to healing, but avoid fixating on certain matters that you can’t change. Trying to force an issue will only lead to frustration today.

Capricorn

Capricorn Symbol/Glyph
Capricorn

The planet of communication, Mercury, is now transiting your playful, creative solar fifth house today, dear Capricorn. This is a strong cycle for expressing yourself more spontaneously. You may be more interested in talking about creative and romantic matters during this transit of Mercury that lasts longer than the usual three weeks – this time, it lasts until June 12th. You express yourself with more wit, charm, or an entertaining touch that draws others to you. Presenting your ideas during this cycle is likely to be especially fruitful. Towards the end of this month Mercury will retrograde in this same zone, which can complicate things but also provide you a window to rethink decisions and choices. These days, home and family matters are taking more priority in your life, and responsibilities elsewhere can seem overwhelming and even obtrusive. At the same time, changes can make you feel uneasy and there can be a strong desire to escape. Consider ways to let go of negative thought patterns that may be emerging now. It’s a good day to put something behind you as we approach a New Moon that occurs tomorrow morning and a chance to start fresh.

Aquarius

Aquarius

Mercury is now transiting your home and family sector, dear Aquarius, and will continue to influence this part of your chart for a longer than usual stretch, until June 12th. Thoughts and conversations very often turn to personal matters during this cycle, and you tend to reminisce about the past. There might be a lot of activity on the home front or with family – perhaps more conversations and interactions, or frequent visitors. Today, hidden feelings of frustration or guilt can emerge suddenly and can be a little disruptive, interfering with interactions and conversations, until you sort them out. You could feel a little overwhelmed with things to do that prevent you from getting ahead in areas where your interests truly lie. You may be feeling frustrated and sensitive to interruptions, disturbances, and difficult people, and there can be double meanings in conversations today. Look for ways to unwind and relax today. With a New Moon occurring tomorrow and bringing fresh energy, it’s a good time to put things you want gone from your life behind you.

Pisces

Pisces

Intelligent, curious Mercury is now transiting your communications sector, dear Pisces, and this sharpens and enhances your ability to process information quickly and effectively. You are likely to be quite busy during this cycle, and the pace might at times feel a little too quick. However, it’s an excellent period, lasting until June 12th, for picking up new information and for diversifying and considering your options. Matters of ownership can be an especially heavy issue for you today, and there may be some power struggles or difficulties trusting someone. It will be difficult to truly know others’ agendas unless you look hard, as people are not very direct or forthcoming right now. With a New Moon occurring tomorrow, your interests and focus are likely to change. Try to let go of resentments today so that you can turn over a new leaf tomorrow without too much in the way of emotional baggage.

7th April 2016: New Moon in Aries

Knowing When We Don’t Know

The Moon is new in the 19th degree of Aries at 11:25 a.m. UT. This is a transformative Moon, conjunct Uranus – bringer of the unexpected – and squared by Pluto – lord of death and rebirth in equal measure. We may find ourselves strangely liberated by something which, to all intents and purposes, looked set to bind us. Things prove not to be as they seemed and a way through a particular challenge may make itself known.

But for this to happen a new perspective is called for. A rapid maturation of attitude which shifts us from ‘how do I manipulate life to make it give me what I want?’, to ‘how do I get out of life’s way to allow it to give me what it wants and needs me to have?’. There may be a gaping divide between the two. So certain are we that we know best, we can easily shut down to life’s nudges and messages which tell us there may just be another way we’ve dismissed or ignored for too long. As the darkness of this Moon resonates with the shadowy corners of our psyche, we can become acutely aware of neglected possibilities and seeds of potential in what once looked like the worst case scenario!

Darkness can be an object of fear or the bringer of safety and rest. Sweet dreams are bidden as darkness falls, just as the monsters of nightmares may rear their ugly heads. We fear darkness not only literally but metaphorically.  We prefer to be clear and sure, certain in our view and decisive when faced with challenge. But often it simply doesn’t work out that way. We may find ourselves confused, blind-sided, ill-equipped to face what we must. It takes time and patience to come up with a plan or gain enough clarity to know that, in fact, nothing need be done. Knowledge is rewarded in our societies: you’re an expert, a master, a guru, a teacher. People look to you for advice and support. To say out loud ‘I truly have no idea’ marks us out as ignorant, uninformed, of little use and no interest.

And yet to know when we don’t know is a wise and noble abiding. It takes wisdom to know our limitations and courage to reveal them to others in a world where knowledge is king. If we know when we don’t know, we can similarly know when we do. Rather than complicating things further with a frantically constructed response born of great haste and little foresight, we can acknowledge we have yet to gather all we need to discern the way forward. And then we wait, or we seek out information to fill the gaps. We ask those who do know or seek insight deep within. We act only when the time is right, not simply to ease our anxiety or sense of urgency. We become aligned with the situation, not fighting or forcing it.

A New Moon in Aries is a time of high energy, with Aries being the first sign of the zodiac and a New Moon heralding new beginnings, something Aries is particularly fond of! However, this time around the energy requires patient consideration and a willingness to stop and reflect before we step out and do. We may well be tempted to act first and think later, but could well regret doing so! The wisdom of this New Moon is accessed in the quiet of inner reflection and the strength it takes to admit when we simply don’t yet know.

Within this admission lies the magic of possibility, the alchemy born of releasing our stranglehold on life and allowing it to unfold all around us rather than desperately trying to direct the show. It enables us to bow to the greater wisdom that is life itself and surrender to a more penetrating force that shapes our life from the inside out, from our very core, radiating forth its energy and potential to become manifest on the outer plane. If we are still waiting for things to improve, for life to buck up and meet our demands, this Moon affirms it’s not all about us, but we are all about life. The key to fulfilment is found in living for life not the other way around, expecting the universe to respond to our decree.

The biggest obstacle to making this shift is often the belief that we know best, that we KNOW how things SHOULD be if only they’d be it! ‘Not so’ says this Moon. There is so much we have yet to understand, and what we don’t know right now is knocking at the door demanding attention. It will challenge what we thought up to now and past certainties may dissolve in its wake. Nothing is quite as it seemed and much is not even close! It’s time to wipe the slate clean of expectations and let life lead us step by step, gifting us wisdom as we go.

The Aries new Moon in March is a particularly interesting one as it is in a very close conjunct with Uranus. Occurring on April 7, it can bring about breakthroughs in decisions, understanding, events, etc, and we may find some rather surprising events along the way. Right before the exact new Moon, there is a trine from Saturn to the new Moon, and this could have us really assessing things in the clear light of day and making moves based on what is truly possible, desirable, available, new, useful, innovative, etc. etc. There is quite a nice balance in that, as, in most cases, we’ll be able to amass the reality and facts of the matter in order to sort out where to from here.

Then, Uranus is likely to have us making moves that might have been building for some time, but needed the added impetus to get them going. We may have been waiting for an appropriate time, not sure the energy is right, or, feeling like our ducks have not been in a row in the right manner… with Uranus so closely aligned with this new Moon, we may have decisions taken out of our hands. We may have events and circumstances handed to us in a way we might not have imagined or foretold. Uranus often brings the unexpected and the downright surprising. Insights, realizations and events can have an electrical quality that can cut through extraneous detail to the core of the matter.

The big whammy, though, of this new Moon is the square from Pluto. This could bring things up to the surface that have been simmering for some time down below. Major and radical transformations can take place and we would do well to watch and observe and measure and not react too quickly (if that is at all possible). Pluto can bring up things from a subterranean level and we would do well to listen to that deeper reality, that deeper impulse.

This feels like a very powerful new Moon. The involvement of Saturn, Uranus and Pluto directly with the new Moon ensures that there will be quite a lot of energies flying about. For many people, there will be many changes of one kind or another. The trick could be to see through the glamour of the Mars/Neptune square. Mars is going retrograde shortly, and, we might do well to take some time to decide where to next.

Many of the energies are generally quite good and provide excellent opportunities, although, for sure, there are always things we might have to deal with (or observe) that might not be so comfortable.

For instance, we have the fabulous Symbols of Mercury on Taurus 3: Easy Steps Up To A Lawn Blooming In Clover, and, the following degree, Taurus 4: A Pot Of Gold At The End Of The Rainbow. This, and the Quest Degree (the degree following) of Uranus is Aries 22: The Gate To The Garden Of All Fulfilled Desires form a lovely combination Mercury and Uranus seem to be asking us about where that ‘lawn blooming in clover’ or ‘gate to the garden’ may be. It may be right where you are now, or, things could unfold to have you moving more closely to these ideals. Many are likely to be feeling the urge to move towards those things, events, relationships, emotions, realities, etc, that are more rewarding – more fulfilling. At the same time, we have that square between Mars and Neptune and this might have us wondering what is real and what is fantasy. Sorting out truth from fiction can be an interesting exercise at this new Moon.

symbols_moon.jpg The New Moon is on Aries 19: A MAGIC CARPET HOVERS OVER THE DEPRESSING REALITY OF EVERYDAY LIFE IN AN INDUSTRIAL AREA

This Symbol shows that you can use your imagination to lift your level of understanding into other, perhaps higher, realms. By elevating ourselves above the everyday world we can transcend worry and strife. There is a clear message here that you can lift yourself above negative situations and by doing so, you can attain a calmer, more creative and spiritual life. With expanded awareness you can have an elevated perspective that reveals greater truths. However, be a little careful not to lose yourself in the longing for escape or the exotic. This Symbol often shows comfort, luxury, riches, beauty and the good things in life. It implies that a time of fulfillment is close by, but there often is still some small effort to be made in that one has to take the simple steps towards inviting wonderful things into your life. Celebrating Legends, Folklore & Spirituality 365 Days a Year for April 6 – Boat Day/Tater Day

GOTHIC WOMAN BY FABRYKING61
April 6 & 7

Boat Day/Tater Day

The annual boat festival held in France celebrates the return of springtime. Children make miniature boats with candles in them that symbolize the joy of sailing on the “seas of life.” At the end of the day, a great procession ends at the Rhine, where the boats are cast onto the coming Summer months.
Batats(sweet potatoes), brought to the New World by Christopher Columbus, became a dietary staple and one of the primary crops grown in the southern United States, where they are as rampant as the kudzu vine. The small tuber is rich in vitamin A and mainly grown for human consumption in the form of alcohol, flour, and starch.
Originally a market where potato slips for Spring planting were sold, Tater Day has been revived as a country fair. In Benton, Kentucky, Sweet Potato Day comes complete with a beauty pageant, horse races, carnival games, rides for the kids and several flea markets. Celebrated since 1843, Tater Day is one of the oldest trade days in the United States.

*It should be noted that Tater Day is held on the first Monday in April. This year’s Tater Day has already occurred on April 4. Benton, Kentucky is about 100 miles from us. It is a quaint little town and if you have a chance, stop in for a visit. You will find it full of good old Southern charm.

Daily Magickal Applications for Wednesday

Gothic Woman & Owl
Daily Magickal Applications for Wednesday

To the Romans, this day was called Dies Mercurii, or “Mercury’s day” Mercury was a popular character in the Roman pantheon. A messenger of the gods, he presided over commerce, trade, and anything that required skill or dexterity. The Celts also worshiped Mercury and eventually equated him with the Norse god Odin (some spelling variations on this name include Wotan, Wodin, and Wodan). In Norse mythologies, Odin, like Mercury, is associated with poetry and music. Interestingly enough, both Odin and Mercury were regarded as psychopomps, or the leaders of souls, in their individual mythologies.

Odin, one of the main gods in Norse mythology, was constantly seeking wisdom. He traveled the world in disguise as a one-eyed man with a long gray beard, wearing an old, beat-up hat and carrying a staff or a spear (which brings to my mind images of Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings). In the Old English language, this day of Mercury evolved into Wodnes daeg, “Woden’s day,” or Wednesday.

Wednesday carries all of the planetary and magickal energies and associations of the witty and nimble god Mercury himself. Some of these mercurial traits included good communication skills, cleverness, intelligence, creativity, business sense, writing, artistic talent, trickiness, and thievery. And don’t forget all of those wise and enigmatic qualities associated with the Norse god Odin/Wodin, not to mention the goddess Athena’s contributions of music, the arts, handmade crafts, and writing. Wednesdays afford excellent opportunities for seeking wisdom, changing your circumstances, and improving your skills, be they in trade and commerce, music and art, or in communication and writing.
