Goddess Knowledge – The Bird Goddess/Valkyrie

The Bird Goddess is one of the most ancient goddesses, both a living-giving creator and goddess of death and regeneration. The Valkyrie, a northern European goddess, is a representation of this goddess as death wielder, The bird guise of the Valkyrie is that of a raven, long associated with death and magic. The name Valkyrie means “chooser of the slain”; the face and form of the Valkyrie are the last thing a person sees before death, Valkyries are the psychopomps who lead the soul to the afterworld. For ancient people death was part of a cyclical process leading again to rebirth; black was a positive color, a symbol of fertility and abundance, The Valkyrie represents that part of us that is unafraid of dark places; she can lead into and through them. She reminds us that seeds germinate in the darkness, that sometimes we need darkness in order to grow.

Invocation to Valraven

Black horse that runs across the sky
Ridden by Valkyries in their battle-wrath
Ridden by Hel in her implacable coldness
Riding the spirits of the air in turn,
Show us our dreams
And not our nightmares,
Yet if you must bring us nightmares,
Let them be guides to the darkest corners
Of our hidden mind and soul,
The better to know ourselves.
Black horse that runs across the sky
On great black wings,
Let us listen for the rustle of your feathers
In our ear as we lie awake
In that moment before sleeping.
Let us go to visit you
Where you are enthroned
In the place of smooth black stone
The place where no light falls
The place where the Dead pass by
On their way from rainbow to earth
On their way past Mordgud’s toll
On their way past Nidhogg’s working
On their way over chill water
Into the icy realm of Death
Where only your Queen rules.
And when we come as your guests,
Lord who lives beneath the ground
And rides the winds in the sky,
May we always be free to leave.
(Hum one wordless note, then blow out the candles and leave in silence.)

Deity of the Day for August 6 – The Valkyries

Valkyries

by Micha F. Lindemans
The Valkyries (“Choosers of the Slain”) are beautiful young women, mounted upon winged horses and armed with helmets and spears. Odin needs many brave warriors for the oncoming battle of Ragnarok, and the Valkyries scout the battlefields to choose the bravest of those who have been slain. They escort these heroes, called the Einherjar to Valhalla, Odin’s hall. The Valkyries are also Odin’s messengers and when they ride forth on their errands, their armor causes the strange flickering light that is called “Aurora Borealis” (Northern Lights).

Some of the Valyries are Brynhildr, Göll, Göndul, Gudr, Gunn, Herfjoturr, Hildr, Hladgunnr, Hlokk, Hrist, Sigrdrifa, Sigrún, and Svafa.

Old Norse: Valkyrja. An 8th and 9th century term for them is Wælcyrge
