Let’s Talk Witch – Granny Magick

Let’s Talk Witch – Granny Magick

Most people who have seen the old television comedy “The Beverly Hillbillies” have no idea about some of the little grains of truth in the show. The show’s creator, Paul Henning, was a native Missourian who was clearly very familiar with the area and the people of the Ozark Mountain region. On the show, the Clampetts make visits to such locations as Silver Dollar City, Springfield and Joplin, Missouri.

What most people who have watched the show never guess is that Granny was more than just Elly May’s grandmother. Granny, who once says she comes from Taney County, which is the southwestern Missouri county where Branson is located, is a “granny woman” which is an old Ozark term for conjure woman. The word “medicine” is another word for potion among old-timers.

The term “hillbilly” is perceived by some a pejorative term and probably to others it seems like a joke. The rest of the world probably can’t imagine what the area is still like – even today. It’s probably especially hard for city-folk to imagine that there are such people as those who live in the hills outside of beautiful, modern Branson, Missouri. They’ve have always been secretive and distrusting of outsiders and for years nobody knew much at all about them until a folk researcher named Vance Randolph married an Ozarker and spent decades trying to ingratiate himself into their culture (impossible for anyone who wasn’t born among them).

In the 1940s he published several books, but arguably the best one is “Ozark Mountain Magic and Folklore.” The ancestors of the original Ozark Mountain settlers came from England and Scotland by way of Appalachia. And, as is alluded to in a two-part episode where the hillbillies go back to England to find their noble ancestors, their ancestors were probably among the earliest American arrivals and were made of a rough, tough stock of people who could survive even the worst adversity.

The Ozark Mountains is still very rough terrain, but 100 years ago, it was only a special breed of people with strong survival skills who were able to live there. The winters are hard and the people live in relative isolation from each other in the hills and “hollers.” Before recent modernization of the highways and literally cutting through the rocks of mountains made travel easier, they were isolated from the outside world and often from each other. They had to rely on what they knew about the environment, animals, insects, plants and herbs and the practice of witchcraft, which grew and thrived among them.

They had magic for all the important aspects of life, but love and courtships was very important, especially for young women. Although, young men, also, practiced love magic. Girls conducted a variety of spells to see their future husbands or to know his name. They used charms and potions to induce love and lust and to dominate their boyfriends and husband.

The following are just a few love spells collected by Randolph in the Missouri Ozarks.

Beltane, the 1st day of May, is a very important day for those who want to know the identity of their future husbands.

If you would like to see your future husband, you must go to a well at noon on May Day and hold a mirror in such a way that it reflects the daylight into the darkness. Then, look into the water and you should see the face of your future mate. But, if you happen to see yourself lying in a coffin, you will die before the next May Day. If you see nothing, you’ll probably be an old maid.

A variation on this procedure requires you to have a glass of water, a gold ring and a mirror. Place the glass in front of the mirror and gaze fixedly at the reflection of the ring in the water.

If you want to see the face of your future husband, rise very early on May 1st and go to the well carrying a guinea egg and a glass. Once at the well, break the egg into the cup and gaze into the water. There you should see the initials of your husband to be reflected in the water of the well.

Similarly, if you wake early on May 1st and look into the reflection of a mirror, you should see the reflection of your future husband’s face or his initials

If you would like to dream about your future mate, look at the over your right shoulder at night and repeat the following incantation:

“New moon, new moon, do tell me

Who my own true lover will be,

The color of his hair, the clothes that he will wear

And the happy day he will wed me.”

Wake Up, Sleepy Heads! GOOD MORNING WOTC! Good Sunday Morning To All!

Good Morning, WOTC! How’s my dearest friends on the planet doing this morning! I hope excellent. It is Sunday morning and guess what? I am waiting on the painters. Yes, they are still here. This was only suppose to last two day and it has turned into three. The place looks fantastic but I feel like the world is passing us by while we are away. And besides, I am stuck watching the painters while they paint. I don’t “watch” “watch” them. I find stuff to tinker with. I go play with some of the animals. Then come back in. I also walk around the yard picking up the mess left from the roofers. Every time I think I have it all picked up, another piece shows up. It is like where is this stuff coming from? I am not complaining even though it sounds like I am. I just thought workers cleaned up after theirselves. And the painters, oh, Goddess! We have got to vacuum and clean the floor. There is little white chips everywhere. One of them, I screamed at the other day. He looked like he had been playing in the mud. I told him to go outside and wipe himself off. Yeah right, I believe when I turned my back he smeared his feet on the rugs. I guess that is just some of the stuff you have to put up with these days. But like I said I am not complaining, just venting, lol! I am thankful everything is almost finished. Two rooms today, my office and the bathroom off the side of it. Surely the painters will be done! I hope! Anyway on to other things……

I was reading in the back, the comments that were left for us. You know I can’t say it enough, I love you! The comments of all the well wishes and, you are the best. You are why I love this place so much. You make the WOTC what it is. And it is the best site on the net because of you all. Thank you so much for your support all these years. Thank you for your friendship and most of all love. You don’t know how much it means to us. You are simply the best! We love you, I love you!

WE LOVE EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU!

YOU ARE THE BEST!

One more quick thing I want you to check out. A college in Missouri is now recognizing Wiccan Holidays! I do believe the movement is alive and well. Spreading like wildfire. Perhaps in our time, we will see our Religion restored to its rightful place. My husband told me about this yesterday. I have been disconnected from the world, lol! But it didn’t sink in at first. Then I asked him if he told me a college in Missouri was now recognizing Wiccan Holidays? And he said, “Yes!” Well you can imagine what I did. I screamed “YES” at the top of my lungs! We are making progress. Even though we can’t take credit for this, it sure doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate with these Wiccans! Can I get an “Amen?” LMAO! I have always wanted to do that, LOL! But I have provided the link below, check it out if you have a minute……

More Good Morning Comments

Good Sunday Morning or Good Sunday Afternoon, dear friends and family!

Just picture the above being a woman’s hand greeting you. I had to find something humorous to keep you from being angry with me.  I got a last minute call this morning from Lady A wanting to know if I could do the daily posts today.  She couldn’t get ahold of the Countess and I was next in line (or last in line, whichever way you way to look at it).  Lady A was on her way to meet someone in Missouri. She received a phone call from an individual in Colorado about taking a momma wolf and her pups. Of course, Lady was in the truck and off. Her husband, another man and Lady made the trip. I know how bad Lady A has wanted another wolf dog since the passing of her beloved Mocha. She wouldn’t have missed this opportunity for nothing in the world. I hope they have a safe trip and Lady A finally finds the pup she has been looking for so long.

Lady A is off, the Countess can’t be found (which is nothing unusual for her) so you are stuck with me. You lucky, dogs, lol!

Have a blessed Sunday,

Annie

Daily Motivator for July 21 – Choose to actively live

Choose to actively live

Don’t find an excuse. Find a way.

Don’t figure out how to put it off until later. Use your energy and  intelligence and time to get it done now.

Let go of the urge to complain about how things are. Remind yourself that you  can make things better, and challenge yourself in each moment to do just that.

There’s no need to be dismayed at how hard it will be. Choose instead to be  enthusiastic about how much of a real difference you can make.

What really matters is not what’s pushing against you. What matters is how  authentically committed you are to moving forward.

Connect with that commitment, connect with your positive passion, and choose to actively live life for all it’s worth. You absolutely can if you will, so do.

A Prayer For Those Who Are Suffering From Loss

Thank the Goddess, I have not lost anyone due to the violent weather.  But my heart weighs extremely heavy, my eyes fill with tears, I can feel the suffering of my brothers and sisters in Joplin. I don’t know if others are feeling this too but it feels as my heart is about to break. Perhaps I feel it more than others because these people are just a couple of hundred miles away from me. I would ask if you have a spare moment today to light a candle and say a prayer for those that are suffering and the spirits that are crossing over. May they all find peace, comfort and love in the Goddess’s arms.

Holy Mother and Holy Father,

hear your children’s prayers and pleas

now at this tragic moment.

This is great sadness that feels our hearts,

many have been lost and many are left to suffer

and grieve.

At times like this we are at a loss for words,

we pray dear Heavenly Parents that you know

our hearts and help us to begin to heal.

We ask that You, our Holy Mother and Holy Father,

now help these people who have lost so much,

see Your love, compassion and most of all your strength.

Guide them each day through this difficult time.

Never leaving their side, be there for them,

when they feel lost and all hope is gone.

Show them Your Mighty Love that they

will have the strength and hope to carry on.

Let them know there will be a new day dawning,

and that day will be filled with happiness and joy.

We ask this of You, Our Eternal Parents.

So Mote It Be!
