NGC 4565: Galaxy on Edge

Image Credit & Copyright: Michael Sherick

Explanation: Magnificent spiral galaxy NGC 4565 is viewed edge-on from planet Earth. Also known as the Needle Galaxy for its narrow profile, bright NGC 4565 is a stop on many telescopic tours of the northern sky, in the faint but well-groomed constellation Coma BerenicesThis sharp, colorful image reveals the galaxy’s boxy, bulging central core cut by obscuring dust lanes that lace NGC 4565’s thin galactic plane. NGC 4565 itself lies about 40 million light-years distant and spans some 100,000 light-years. Easily spotted with small telescopes, sky enthusiasts consider NGC 4565 to be a prominent celestial masterpiece Messier missed.

A Laugh for Today

Wishing you a terrific Thursday!

Time to go make some more decaf coffee. Look for the spell on how to give decaf drinks a boost to energize you without the shakes caffeine can cause.

A Thought for Today

If we do a spell or ritual that messes with a person free will we are doing black/dark magick. Remember if you do this it will come back at you three times worse as stated in the Threefold Law also know as The Law of Three. This is against what the Wicce Rede says, “Do as ye will, less it harms none.”

Until we meet again dear sisters, brothers, and honored guests may you blessed be.

The Lively Center of the Lagoon Nebula

Image Credit: NASAESAHubbleProcessing & Copyright: Mehmet Hakan Özsaraç

Explanation: The center of the Lagoon Nebula is a whirlwind of spectacular star formation. Visible near the image center, at least two long funnel-shaped clouds, each roughly half a light-year long, have been formed by extreme stellar winds and intense energetic starlight. A tremendously bright nearby star, Herschel 36, lights the area. Vast walls of dust hide and redden other hot young stars. As energy from these stars pours into the cool dust and gas, large temperature differences in adjoining regions can be created generating shearing winds which may cause the funnelsThis picture, spanning about 10 light years, combines images taken in six colors by the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope. The Lagoon Nebula, also known as M8, lies about 5000 light years distant toward the constellation of the Archer (Sagittarius).

Norse Mythology

Norse mythology, the stories of gods and heroes from in and around the Viking Age (c. 790 – c. 1100 CE) in northern Europe, has provided us with some of the most famous figures in world mythology. Here, in this collection, we look at such colourful characters as the wise and one-eyed war god Odin who calls warriors to the halls of Valhalla, red-eyed Thor with his giant thunder-making hammer, and Freyja, the fertility goddess who travels in a cat-drawn carriage. We also examine the literary sources of these stories, the cults of the various gods and consider the wider significance of these strange northern tales.

…archaeological evidence helps hint at personal devotion to specific gods people felt connected to, with accompanying customs and rituals being a standard part of everyday life.

Tips For Teachers & Educators

Mythology tends to be quite a popular topic among students as it appears quite a bit here and there in pop culture. It is usually easier to find ways to engage students than for some other subjects.

Here, the TV series Vikings will help you, as it is usually known (and liked!) by a fair amount of students.

A few things we want to point out, regarding this collection: …

A Deep Sky Behind an Eclipsed Moon

Image Credit & Copyright: Andrei Ionut Dascalu

Explanation: The plan was to capture a picturesque part of the sky that was hosting an unusual guest. The result included a bonus — an additional and unexpected guest. The beautiful background features part of the central band of our Milky Way galaxy on the far left, and the colorful clouds of Rho Ophiuchi in the image center. The unusual guest, a dimmed and reddened Moon on the right, was expected because the image was taken during last week’s total lunar eclipse. The timing had to be right because the Moon — both before and after eclipse — would be so bright it would overwhelm the background. The unexpected guest was the bright meteor across the image center. The fleeting meteor streak was captured on only one of the 10 consecutively-captured deep-field images from La Palma in the Spanish Canary Islands, while the eclipsed Moon image was taken immediately afterwards with the same camera and from the same location. The next total lunar eclipse — also quite expected — will occur in early November.

The Once and Future Stars of Andromeda

Image Credit: NASANSFNOAJHubbleSubaruMayallDSSSpitzerProcessing & Copyright: Robert Gendler & Russell Croman

Explanation: This picture of Andromeda shows not only where stars are now, but where stars will soon be. Of course, the big, beautiful Andromeda Galaxy, M31, is a spiral galaxy — and a mere 2.5 million light-years away. Both space-based and ground-based observatories have been here combined to produce this intriguing composite image of Andromeda, at wavelengths both inside and outside normally visible light. The visible light shows where M31’s stars are now — as highlighted in white and blue hues and imaged by the HubbleSubaru, and Mayall telescopes. The infrared light shows where M31’s future stars will soon form — as highlighted in orange hues and imaged by NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope. The infrared light tracks enormous lanes of dust, warmed by stars, sweeping along Andromeda’s spiral arms. This dust is a tracer of the galaxy’s vast interstellar gas — the raw material for future star formation. These new stars will likely form over the next hundred million years, surely well before Andromeda merges with our Milky Way Galaxy in about 5 billion years.

Ogham Symbols and Their Meaning – A List

The ancient Celts didn’t have a written language, but they had a mysterious set of sigils known as the Ogham. These sigils were used to represent certain trees and shrubs, and eventually developed into letters. Let’s take a closer look at the significance of ogham both as an alphabet and as magical sigils.

What Are the Ogham Sigils?

The ogham sigils are estimated to have been used between the 4th and 10th centuries CE to write on giant stone monuments. The symbols were written vertically along a line and read from the bottom to the top. There are around 400 such stones that have survived to this day, found throughout Ireland as well as in the western regions of Britain. Most of these ogham stones showcase personal names.

The ogham sigils are called feda, which means trees—and sometimes nin or forking branches. The alphabet originally consists of 20 letters, divided into four groups, or aicme, each containing five letters. The fifth set of five symbols, called forfeda, were only a later addition.

The ogham alphabet is inspired by trees, which forms the mytical basis of these symbols. Hence the ogham alphabet is also called a …

A Large Tsunami Shock Wave on the Sun

Image Credit: NSO/AURA/NSF and USAF Research Laboratory

Explanation: Tsunamis this large don’t happen on Earth. During 2006, a large solar flare from an Earth-sized sunspot produced a tsunami-type shock wave that was spectacular even for the Sun. Pictured here, the tsunami wave was captured moving out from active region AR 10930 by the Optical Solar Patrol Network (OSPAN) telescope in New MexicoUSA. The resulting shock wave, known technically as a Moreton wave, compressed and heated up gasses including hydrogen in the photosphere of the Sun, causing a momentarily brighter glow. The featured image was taken in a very specific red color emitted exclusively by hydrogen gas. The rampaging tsunami took out some active filaments on the Sun, although many re-established themselves later. The solar tsunami spread at nearly one million kilometers per hour, and circled the entire Sun in a matter of minutes.

Intuition 101: Developing Your Clairsenses

Whether you refer to it as a gut reaction, instinct, foresight or a certain knowingness about events that haven’t yet taken place, everyone has the gift of intuition. Are you listening to the signs and signals? Psychic medium Rebecca Rosen explains the five clair senses, what they are and how to identify and develop your strongest clair sense in order to open the door to powerful guidance that will help you create a meaningful and magical life.

Early on when I was developing my spiritual connection, I battled with tremendous self-doubt. It was hard for me to not compare my particular style of connecting with other mediums’ experiences. It was clear to me that many mediums actually did “see” dead people or ghostlike apparitions. I wondered, “If I’m not seeing these ghosts standing next to the person I’m reading for, does that mean I’m not really connecting to spirit?” Meanwhile, I was, in fact, receiving profound validations or evidence from spirits to convince both the people I worked with and myself. There was a genuine connection being made.

As I started to explore the language of spirit and better understand how intuition works, I realized that my dominant way of receiving intuitive information was a more auditory experience rather than a visual one. The irony was that once I let go of my desire to “see,” I started to recognize spirit energy as sparks of light, orbs and swirling wisps around the room. With time, I learned that while we have one or two dominant physical senses, we also have dominant intuitive senses and that we all connect with spirit in our own unique way. Our job is to figure out what way that is and then simply embrace it. And that’s exactly what I’m going to help you to do.

Like radio waves, spiritual information is constantly being broadcast around us, so it’s really just a matter of learning how to tune in to it. To interpret what spirit is broadcasting, you’ll be using your five senses just like you do in your day-to-day life. And just as you may feel that some of your senses are more reliable than others for making everyday judgments, you have senses, or clairs, that are stronger for connecting with spirit.

The clair senses are types of psychic abilities that correspond with the five senses of seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting. When I tap into my intuition and spirit energy, my mind and body become flooded with mental impressions: thoughts, feelings, images, sounds, tastes and smells. To help you determine what your dominant clairs are, let me start by first explaining what they are and how our preferred senses shape our lives.

Planetary Nebula Abell 7

Image Credit & Copyright: Donald Waid, Ron Dilulio

Explanation: Very faint planetary nebula Abell 7 is some 1,800 light-years distant, just south of Orion in planet Earth’s skies in the constellation Lepus, The Hare. Surrounded by Milky Way stars and near the line-of-sight to distant background galaxies, its generally simple spherical shape, about 8 light-years in diameter, is outlined in this deep telescopic image. Within its confines are beautiful, more complex details enhanced by the use of narrowband filters. Emission from hydrogen is shown in reddish hues with oxygen emission mapped to green and blue colors, giving Abell 7 a natural appearance that would otherwise be much too faint to be appreciated by eye. A planetary nebula represents a very brief final phase in stellar evolution that our own Sun will experience 5 billion years hence, as the nebula’s central, once sun-like star shrugs off its outer layers. Abell 7 itself is estimated to be 20,000 years old. Its central star is seen here as a fading white dwarf some 10 billion years old.
