YEMANJA, THE SANTERIA GODDESS of the ocean, is believed to be the daughter of the earth goddess Oddudua, and the sister and wife of the god Aganju. As the mother of the fourteen gods and goddesses who make up the pantheon, Yemanja occupies an exalted position in the Santeria religion.

Santeria developed during the nineteenth century from the Yoruba religion practiced by enslaved Africans who were brought to Cuba to work on sugarcane plantations. plantations. Since the Yoruba were not allowed to practice their native beliefs, they camouflaged their rituals with the symbols of the Roman Catholicism they were forced to observe; one example of this is the affinity of the goddess Yemanja to the Virgin Mary. By this practice, the Yoruba remained loyal to their orishas, or deities, and avoided detection and punishment. The Santeria religion spread from Cuba, where it originated, through the Caribbean to North and South America. It is still widely practiced today.

At some time in their lives, each practitioner of Santeria chooses one of the gods or goddesses to be their spiritual parent. Those who are the children of Yemanja try to please the goddess in many ways. Since seven is the number sacred to Yemanja, they wear seven silver bracelets on their arms. They also burn candles as blue as the ocean Yemanja rules. Beautiful blue and crystal beads, strung into necklaces as ethereal as iridescent moonlight upon the sea, adorn their necks.

Welcome to July 2017. A playful time, potentially, bubbles up alongside Sun and Mars in Leo later in July. We’ll crave fun, beauty, holidays and laughter to counterbalance the numerous weightier concerns and shifting shadows around us.

But July begins with a serious – even sombre – mood, as we look back over recent years and wonder how we can make vital changes in our world. An intense full Moon on the 9th is an emotional wake-up call too. Striving for balance is crucial, for creating harmony within ourselves and in the natural world around us is our huge collective challenge. So here’s to love, hope, and peace this July – there’s work to be done.

Wednesday, July 5

Despite the Moon’s presence, this week offers a good opportunity for binocular users to track down one of summer’s finest open star clusters. NGC 6231 lies in the tail of Scorpius the Scorpion, just 0.5° north of the double star Zeta (z) Scorpii (which is another fine binocular sight). NGC 6231 shines at magnitude 2.6 and packs more than 100 stars into a region about half the width of the Full Moon. This part of Scorpius lies nearly due south after darkness falls, though it doesn’t climb high from mid-northern latitudes.

Thursday, July 6

The waxing gibbous Moon passes just 3° north of Saturn this evening, helping point the way to the magnificent ringed planet. The two are on display nearly all night among the background stars of southern Ophiuchus, hanging in the southeastern sky as darkness falls and climbing high in the south by midnight local daylight time. The pair will look nice with the naked eye or binoculars, but telescope users will want to choose another night this week when the Moon isn’t so close to target the magnitude 0.1 planet. Saturn reached its peak just three weeks ago, when it appeared opposite the Sun in the sky, and our view of the ringed planet remains spectacular. A telescope reveals the world’s 18″-diameter disk surrounded by a dramatic ring system that spans 41″ and tilts 27° to our line of sight.

The Moon reaches apogee, the farthest point in its orbit around Earth, at 12:28 a.m. EDT. It then lies 252,236 miles (405,934 kilometers) from Earth’s center.

Friday, July 7

This week offers observers their first peek of Mercury during its current evening apparition. The innermost planet stands 6° high in the west-northwest a half-hour after sunset tonight. Although Mercury glows brightly, at magnitude –0.6, you might need binoculars to spot it initially against the twilight glow. A telescope reveals the planet’s disk, which spans 5.6″ and appears 80 percent lit.

Saturday, July 8

Full Moon officially arrives at 12:07 a.m. EDT tomorrow morning, but it looks completely illuminated all night. It appears low in the southeast as the Sun sets and climbs highest in the south around 1 a.m. local daylight time. The Full Moon resides among the background stars of Sagittarius the Archer throughout the night.

Sunday, July 9

Tonight marks the peak of Pluto’s 2017 appearance. The distant world reaches opposition, which means it lies opposite the Sun in our sky and remains visible all night. It glows dimly at 14th magnitude, however, so you’ll need an 8-inch or larger telescope with good optics to spot it visually. Pluto currently lies in northeastern Sagittarius, some 1.8° east-southeast of 3rd-magnitude Pi (p) Sagittarii. Happy Fourth of July To All The Members of the WOTC!

Happy Fourth of July to all the members of the WOTC & to those visiting us today!

 

We were planning on getting back on track today but we ran into a huge problem. WordPress doesn’t seem to recognize any other accounts besides Lady of the Abyss’. We have to sign up and re-open our accounts. No wonder Mystie couldn’t get her account to work. I was the last one to open an account and I assumed I wouldn’t have a problem. You know what they say about when you assume something. That old saying turned out to be very true this morning.

This does delay our plans on having the WOTC back on the internet today but it is beyond our control. We are all making new accounts and will be back tomorrow. None of us feel right using Lady of the Abyss’ account even though she said we could. It was in character with Lady Abyss to say we could use her account but it will only be confusing for you. Out of respect for you and Lady Abyss, we will be creating those new accounts today.

Up-date on Lady A: She is currently not doing well at all. She had to be taken back to surgery due to a bleeder. The doctors explained something during her first surgery had been scrapped and slowly leaking blood ever since. She finally lost enough blood that her blood pressure bottomed out and that is when these so-called doctors figured out what was wrong. I know her family kept telling the doctors she looked paler than usual. No response from the doctors. No color in her nails, no response. Finally when she broke down shaking, the doctors paid attention. I do not know what has happened to our medical system besides we don’t have one these days. Lady A is currently back in the ICU for a few days. We have had several requests for the number to her room so people could wish her well. The ICU does not have phones. When she is moved back out on the floor, we will discuss this with Lady A. If she wishes for it to given out, then we will. If she doesn’t, we will respect her wishes. Personally, I don’t think it is a good idea, she needs her rest. We will wait and see on that one.

Don’t forget about the fund raiser coming up this weekend for Lady A and her medical expenses. We have already received our first order and have processed it. Just a reminder, you don’t have to wait till this weekend to purchase items. After you see this new store, you will see why Lady A decided to break with Etsy. This new website carries everything that we wanted to originally carry but Etsy said no. Etsy had given us a retail account and then when the merchandise was put on there, they changed their minds. We could not sell this, nor could we sell that. Since they could not comply with our original agreement, Lady A broke with them and found another platform to sell on. You have a moment today, check out the new “Magickal Necessities.”

I believe that covers everything you might want to know. We are going to make our new accounts and we will be back tomorrow. We apologize for not being back today but the unexpected happened.

Up-date on Lady A & The WOTC

We have had numerous emails in regards to Lady A’s health.  She came through the surgery fine.  The doctors did remove a large tumor from her hip. Her right hip was replaced after they removed the tumor. At the last doctor’s visit, it was determined she also had a tumor on her ankle bone. You could see it, it was big enough it was protruding from the bone. It was also removed during this surgery. The doctors believe they got all of the tumors from both places. Lady A has a rare genetic disease that stems from her liver. Perhaps, I might not explain it right but the doctors said her liver had nodes on it. These nodes could grow and spread tumors throughout her entire body. Now that her hip and ankle tumor have been removed, the doctors still have a fibroid on her uterus to remove and also figure out what to do about the nodes on her liver. The doctors couldn’t do all the surgeries at one time because it would have been too much for her. She will have to have chemo for a period of time. Which means she will be out for several months.

 

Lady A had been teaching my brother and myself how to operate the WOTC because she knew this was coming. We are planning on starting the WOTC back up on either the 4th or 5th of July. We are currently in the process of building a store on GoDaddy and all the proceeds from that site will go toward Lady A’s medical expenses. Working at a non-profit organization, she did not have health coverage nor do any of us. Right now, her medical bills are going to be catastrophic. We love her and we are doing everything we can to help her with at least some of the bills because she has a fight ahead of her. We don’t believe she should have to worry about the bills while she is trying to recover. When the shop opens we will announce it and please remove every dime of the money made from that shop will go to Lady A for her medical expenses. If you would like to donate, you will find a button below to do so.

 

I know it won’t be the same without her but she will be here in spirit. I also know she will probably sneak in when from time to time. She is a strong woman and we have every confidence that she is going to make a 100% recovery. Thank you for your thoughts and concerns for her. Continue to pray for her recovery during this period of her life.
