Inspiration for the Week – There Is Never a Time When You Were alone

The Gabriel Message Card for this Week:

There has never been a time when you were alone, no matter how you felt.

As we evolve into true multidimensional beings, there are times when we are feeling empty, disconnected and even abandoned. This can usually mean we are about to take a leap in energy to a greater expression of ourselves. As intriguing as that sounds, it can be profoundly uncomfortable.

We are in a powerful time that is encouraging us to liberate ourselves from our old ways of being. There are shifts in energy occurring within us that are requiring us to have the faith and trust enough to let ourselves expand into new aspects of life, even when they are unknown to us.

These feelings of disconnection are the indicators that we are about to move into a more expanded level of being, just as electricity in a house needs to be shut off in order for new wiring to be put into place.

Finding a place of neutrality and balance within us during times of outward upheaval becomes vitally important to our well-being. If we try to protect ourselves by contracting energetically in the face of challenging frequencies, we can feel as though we are cut off from our Soul and its guidance system. For me, this causes all sorts of old fear patterns to surface.

If I allow myself to run the chaotic energy I see in the world through my energy system, a downward spiral can develop which leaves me feeling overwhelmed and alone. It is in these times that this Gabriel Message just seems to fall out of the set of cards, reminding me of the truth of my existence — that I am always receiving God’s love, that I am never alone, and that my connection to Source energy is only a breath away. It is only when I start to breathe more deeply and slow down that I can actually feel more alignment with my Source energy.

When I feel confusion and sense of disconnection, it’s my clue to surrender to the process of realignment that is going on within me, rather than trying in vain to find the old connections that no longer exist.

We are moving into new levels of consciousness very quickly now. The faster I let go of the old ideas about how I am progressing, the easier it is on my nervous system. No matter how hard I try to box them into old forms, the energy connections are very different in feeling. I am being inspired and guided in new ways that can change moment to moment. It is a powerful opportunity to learn to treat myself with loving-kindness and to trust more.

Everyone is experiencing this opening in their own way, so our ability to stay neutral and balanced in our heart is extremely important. The consciousness of the Earth and all those living upon her is expanding and becoming more filled with Light. Whatever is not in alignment with this expansion is showing up to be transmuted.

The good news is that we are being inspired and guided through this process of expansion by Divine Love, eternally caring for us, always present, offering all that we need to fulfill our Soul’s purpose in every moment. And we are never alone, no matter what we think about it.

Divine Presence,

Thank you for inspiring me in resourceful ways to stay balanced within myself through times of spaciousness, as well as times of upheaval. Help me to remember that there is a Greater Power working within me as I expand to allow the new frequencies of Light to be present within my human form. As I continue to stay in Alignment with my Source energy, help me to stay grounded and gracefully release old patterns that may be surfacing. I offer all that I am, all that I do and all that I say to Divinity working in and through my being, now and always. And so it is.

The Gabriel Messages Book #28

There has never been a time when you were alone, no matter how you felt.

Dear One,

If you only knew how much you are loved and cared for, you would see your life in a different light. There are Angels who have been with you since your birth, and some from before your birth who have been with you for eons of time. These Angels are here to bless you, to protect you, to care for you, and to love you as you walk your earthly journey.

You have only to turn within and you will find us. You have only to look around you, and you will find Angels manifested in different forms everywhere, giving love to you.

Open your mind and heart to receive this love and you will find miracles manifesting in your life. It is this willingness to receive that allows miracles to occur for you.

In your darkest hours we have been there. It is not that the Angels are here to take away your pain or your lessons learned through experience. The Angels are here for you to turn to in those hours of need. We are here to assist you so you will have the courage to go on, and find peace within your heart. You are on this planet to learn and to choose between the darkness and the light. Even if you choose darkness, there are Angels who will neither forsake you nor leave you. However, if you choose darkness you will feel very alone, and life will be a continuous struggle.

If you choose Divine Light, the Angelic voices are raised in magnificent rejoicing and all manner of assistance, seen and unseen, will be there to illuminate your path. Choosing to live in the light can simply mean to turn over your burdens and struggles to a Higher Power, and to ask the Angels to assist you in finding your way to peace, happiness and prosperity. These are the qualities of God in which you are meant to live.

Choosing Light means praying for the Divine Presence to fill you to overflowing with love and peace. It means taking the time to visualize your self-filled and surrounded by light, and even drinking in the Divine Light in order to nourish your heart and soul. Not only will this affect your mental and emotional state, but your physical body will also benefit.

The Angels are God’s messengers. We live in the Light. All the forces of good in the Universe are here to assist you so you too can live in the Light and find peace and happiness within yourself. It is up to you to ask to know this as truth in your life. Open your mind and heart to receive all the love that is here for you right now. Remember your message from Archangel Gabriel for today:

There has never been a time when you were alone, no matter how you felt.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Aries

Aries
Aries

With the Moon and Saturn joining forces this morning, dear Aries, you come back down to earth. This is a great time for learning practical skills that will help you for years to come, so look for the lesson today! Your ideas and advice are well-received. You may feel a little deflated with this Moon-Saturn meet-up, but not for very long, as the Moon in fellow Fire sign, Sagittarius, brings pick-me-up energy to your life, particularly as it’s also harmonizing with Mars and Jupiter. You’re experiencing more faith in a relationship or confidence about relationship choices, and you’re in great shape creatively speaking. The sharing of opinions flows well today. There is building enthusiasm about your future. Tonight, you receive a pleasant jolt of psychic energy as your imagination opens and you have a glimpse of where you want to go.

Taurus

Taurus
Taurus

The big plans of yesterday may need to come down to earth today, dear Taurus, as the Moon has its monthly meet-up with realistic Saturn. Even so, you’re likely to feel quite satisfied with the realism now as you are in a better position to make healthy choices and decisions. You are learning to take more responsibility for your life on the deepest of levels with Saturn in your solar eighth house until December, and kicking bad habits or controlling negative impulses can be part of this. Today, you can find ways to organize or sort your finances or do something productive, mature, and growth-oriented that impresses Saturn! As the day advances, you can become all fired up about an intimate relationship or project — in a good way. You’re ready to take on a challenge and solve a puzzle.

Gemini

Gemini
Gemini

The Moon’s monthly alignment with Saturn occurs this morning, dear Gemini, and others may be reminding you of your responsibilities, or you are taking a relationship quite seriously. While this serious mood can be a little deflating at first, it can feel good to be seeing things clearly. You have a more realistic view of a person or relationship in your life, and this helps you build true confidence — that is, confidence based on the truth. Being there for someone in need can give you a wonderful feeling now. Your willingness to make some personal sacrifices to accommodate others doesn’t go unnoticed. As the day advances, you’re in particularly good shape for harmonizing with others. Creative ideas can come from a collaboration, or you can solve a few problems with someone special.

Cancer

Cancer
Cancer

This is another day for optimism and faith, dear Cancer, but today’s is more grounded and realistic. Life is simpler this way, although the Moon’s alignment with Saturn this morning may feel a little bit sobering at first. Take advantage of this energy for seeing a work project more clearly or for organizing or sorting through areas of your home or work. You can be especially willing to put things in order, resolve problems, and get to the bottom of matters. You might stumble upon information about a program for improving your health. A nice flow of energy is with you for accomplishing your work and fulfilling responsibilities with less effort than usual. This can be a fine time to recognize which daily habits can stand improving and to consider ways to reduce stress.

Leo

Leo
Leo

The morning is excellent for getting something just right along creative or romantic lines, dear Leo. The Moon has its monthly meet-up with Saturn, and this encourages you to be productive, to sort something out, or to get organized. Interactions can be on the serious side, and you might welcome a serious conversation now, or you may be bringing more structure to a creative project or idea. You’re thorough, and this feels good, boosting your confidence. Focus on strengthening your plans and ties now. As the day advances, you’re loosening up and tuning into your intuition. People understand your ideas, perspective, and beliefs, and you’re likely to feel quite rejuvenated.

Virgo

Virgo
Virgo

Today finds you more introspective or retiring than usual, dear Virgo, and you can benefit from some time to yourself away from pressures and in better touch with yourself. Mind you, the Moon aligns with Saturn this morning, pointing to the need to bring more structure and order to your life or simply to your home. This is a great time for sorting out problems. While yesterday may have been a time for big ideas, filling in the details can be satisfying now. You appreciate the realism today. Once your responsibilities are handled, give yourself the chance to recoup and gather strength. Later today, you’ll want to be a little more active and hands-on. You can enjoy original thinking about a financial or family-related matter.

Libra

Libra
Libra

You can enjoy some reprieve from recent tensions, dear Libra, as well as emotional ups and downs. The Moon has its monthly meet-up with Saturn this morning, and asks you to do the mature thing, sort something out, or fulfill an obligation. This is a reminder that you won’t be able to get much accomplished if you don’t take good care of your mind and spirit. You could feel alone in your decision-making this morning, but once this is out of the way, you learn to be more self-reliant which boosts your confidence in the long run. Alternatively, this can be a time of practical study or application, or of instructive conversations. As the day advances, you feel more innovative and enterprising. It’s a time for sharing your ideas and enjoying the process.

Scorpio

Scorpio
Scorpio

The Moon has its monthly meeting with Saturn today, dear Scorpio, and this morning has a down-to-earth feel as a result. While you’ve been entertaining lofty ideas and expectations, you benefit now from a more realistic approach, or you could thoroughly enjoy fleshing out the details of a plan. Earthy, grounding activities are favored all day, as these things turn your attention to the present, reminding you of the value of what you already have. Good advice about money may be circulating, or you can hash things out with someone and come up with useful strategies for taking care of business. The day becomes more spirited as it advances, although still quieter than most days. Clever ideas for making money or repurposing items and projects can come to you now. You can feel particularly enthusiastic about your work.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius
Sagittarius

The Moon is in your sign all day, dear Sagittarius, and the major theme is your emotions, as they demand your attention! You’re seeking feedback and acknowledgment now. While this transit fires you up, the Moon aligns with Saturn this morning, bringing some soberness to the equation, and you’re coming down from a day of too-high expectations. This doesn’t have to feel like a hangover. In fact, you may relish the idea that you now see things more clearly. It’s a good time to think up plans based on a realistic assessment of what can be done. As well, as the day progresses, you benefit from some supportive Moon aspects that point to satisfying interactions with friends, networks, or groups, and opportunities to share your ideas and learn something useful. This is a fine day to share a little of your expertise.

Capricorn

Capricorn
Capricorn

The Moon spends another day in your solar twelfth house, dear Capricorn, and you tend to want to retreat, escape, or take a break from the demands of everyday life. Even if you’re among others, you may be keeping significant parts of you to yourself. This will change when the Moon moves into your sign early tomorrow, but you’re in need of some extra rest today. The Moon aligns with your ruler, Saturn, this morning, and this can turn your thoughts towards serious matters. Assessing areas of your life that are no longer working for you can be in focus. Efforts to help others can bring intrinsic rewards now. The realism of the morning is grounding, even if it feels a little deflating for a few moments. As the day advances, you feel more purposeful and readily find outlets for expressing your feelings.

Aquarius

Aquarius
Aquarius

You’re ready to put your emotions aside in order to get things done this morning, dear Aquarius. If a project comes under question, try to take it as a challenge. While you may be waiting for others to sense what you want or need, it’s better to express yourself directly or wait until later today when people are more receptive. You can come to a healthy balance between optimism and realism today. Decisions are easier as a result, and so are relationships! People understand boundaries quite intuitively at the moment. Friendships and other casual relationships are in focus. Sharing ideas is fun rather than a lesson in frustration. You can be on the same wavelength as a friend or associate later today. Even with Mercury’s retrograde, there can be a smooth flow in your interactions. You might have begun the day with a larger sense of your responsibilities, but the odds are in your favor for putting something behind you.

Pisces

PIsces
Pisces

You may be feeling more driven or ambitious than usual today, dear Pisces, with the Moon at the top of your solar chart and a strong sense that others are noticing what you’re doing. Your senses are apt to be correct! While you can feel a little guarded, this is a good time to get yourself back on track. You find it easier to take a lesson from recent ups and downs and apply yourself more deliberately. The Moon aligns with Saturn this morning, and you can definitely feel the weight of your duties, or you receive a reminder of what needs to be done. Later today, you’re likely to bring an excellent spirit of enterprise and innovation to your business, public life, leadership, or practical affairs. You can gain meaningful insight into others’ motivations or benefit from developing a strategy for pursuing your goals.

If You Were Born on Wednesday, August 30th

You are an extremely generous person who will bend over backward to help out a friend or loved one. You are that especially thoughtful person who remembers the “little things” about others. You are also very perceptive and people-aware. A humanitarian, you are sentimental without being sappy. At times, you may have a tendency to micro-manage your family and loved ones, as you seem to worry a lot about your future and your loved ones’ happiness. You may need to be careful with this so that others don’t perceive you as controlling or critical. Moodiness can be a problem for you at times. Learning to detach yourself and take a step back from situations will help you to better succeed in life. Your finances tend to fluctuate more than most. Your Daily Horoscopes for Thursday, August 31st

Aries

Aries
Aries

Mercury is still retrograde (since August 12th), and today slips back into your sector of romance, creativity, and children, dear Aries. Mercury continues here in retrograde motion until the 5th and then continues in direct motion until the 9th. In the coming week, there can be delays or challenges related to the affairs of this sector, and you may need to redo or revisit past problems. If you’re traveling back over the same ground, be sure to do it differently this time around! Something can be left up in the air, or people from your past may re-emerge. The creative process might feel as if it’s moving backward, when in fact it’s more of a realignment process that you’re experiencing. You are thinking and expressing yourself in different ways. This is a good time to rethink recent decisions and choices. Today, you may be experiencing some reservations about a person, project, or situation – perhaps even a purchase. If you feel the urge to prove yourself, ask yourself if it’s something you truly need to do. While the Moon’s move into your reputation sector this morning serves to temporarily magnify the importance of duties and performance in your life, you’re also in a good position to get some serious work done!

Taurus

Taurus
Taurus

Mercury, still retrograde, slips back into your sector of home and family today, dear Taurus, and this can cast a veil over matters surrounding your domestic or personal life until September 5th when Mercury turns direct. Problems around the home can require your attention, or old dilemmas can resurface. After the 5th, matters unblock and clear up, the information you’ve been waiting for arrives, and thinking about personal and domestic matters clarify. Also today, Venus forms a tense aspect with Saturn, and since Venus is your ruler, you could be feeling excluded or misunderstood. While this is likely to be a rather vague feeling, it can weigh on you if you allow it to. People can be a little detached or withholding, and you may be holding back as well. Do your best to work on problem areas, or to take a step back so that you can look at a relationship or concern objectively. Chances are, the problems can be fixed with a little patience. This is a beautiful time to consider and examine what it is that you truly value.

Gemini

Gemini
Gemini

Retrograde Mercury slips back into your sector of communication today, dear Gemini, after spending the first leg of its retrograde journey in your home and family sector. Mercury will be retrograde for only a week longer, not even, but you’ll likely need to deal with some delays related to schooling, transportation, and communications that cause a few problems or confusion. Be vigilant about marking important dates and appointments on your calendar. You may be looking back at old projects and finding interesting information that helps you in the present. Today, with Venus and Saturn in a minor challenging aspect, you may be seeing a situation in a weak or negative light. Be aware that this aspect can pull up fears or inhibitions to the surface and if others are a little cool or critical with you, it’s likely about self-protectiveness. It’s a good time to take a look at your life with a bit more objectivity. Aim to get in better touch with your needs and desires.

Cancer

Cancer
Cancer

Mercury has been retrograde since August 12th and has been influencing your communications sector, dear Cancer. Today, Mercury moves back into your sector of assets, money, and resources for a short while. This is a time for a review of your finances or budget, and perhaps something lost or misplaced. You may need to rethink recent decisions and choices or wait for final word on a matter. Mercury retrograde periods often have us feeling in limbo, and at this time for you, this could be about money or possessions (material things). Mercury continues its retrograde until September 5th, and then finishes up its transit of this sector of your chart on the 9th. A new perspective on a matter can turn your attention to something you overlooked in the past. Today can be a little tricky on social levels. A disconnect with someone can lead to misunderstandings. You may see things for their flaws more than their benefits today, but this can serve a useful purpose if you use it to fix problems rather than dwell on what’s not working out in your life. With a little patience, you’ll see things more clearly and reasonably.

Leo

Leo
Leo

Retrograde Mercury slips back into your sign today, dear Leo. Mercury turned retrograde on August 12th in the sign of Virgo and is now retreating into your sign. Until September 5th, Mercury remains retrograde in your sign and then finishes its transit of Leo by September 9th. This can be a time for moving back to an old conversation, project, look, or decision and revisiting it. Someone who has been gone or distant can reappear in your life. Communication problems could plague you in little, annoying ways in the coming week. Some personal plans may stall or encounter setbacks, delays, or require reassessment. Take extra time coming to decisions and making commitments for the time being. If it takes you a little longer to come to decisions, so be it! There could be stinginess with feelings or a withholding atmosphere later today, but it has roots in fear and the misdirected desire to feel more in control of our lives. You could feel restricted now, but problems and flaws are magnified in your mind today, and things will look better later. Creatively speaking, your confidence may be lacking. You’ll find the most satisfaction in your work and routines now.

Virgo

Virgo
Virgo

Mercury, moving in retrograde motion, leaves your sign today, dear Virgo, and slips back into the sign of Leo, where it will stay until September 9th, although it will remain retrograde only until September 5th. This turns your thought processes inward, even more so. Some of the decisions made and projects started in the last month can come up for review now. You can be even more mysterious and easily misunderstood! However, you will be out of the spotlight now, and this helps take some pressure off. Decision-making can be difficult in the coming week as you play with different possibilities. Your mind can frequently turn back to the same problem that’s hard to resolve. Also today, when it comes to relationships and social interactions, there can be some disconnects. Calmness and a little detachment will help manage this. Relationships feel slow, and creativity can feel blocked. Use this time to reflect on your needs and the needs of those closest to you, rather than trying to push things forward. Obstacles are sometimes necessary, not only because they can give us pause to think, but also because they help us to see the value of things, and even people!

Libra

Libra
Libra

Mercury, moving in retrograde motion, slips back into your solar eleventh house today, dear Libra, where Mercury will transit until September 9th (in retrograde motion until September 5th). Some of the seeds you recently planted related to friends or long-term goals are likely to need review or revision. Friendships can be a little trickier to handle now, although they’ll pick up speed after the 5th. Watch for missing information or fuzzy thinking. Returning to past issues with a friend is very possible you’ll need to approach things differently to get different, satisfying results! Today holds some iffy energy related to family and friends. Disconnects in your relationships are possible now as someone is holding back perhaps due to fear of rejection. This is not the best time to lay your heart on the line. If you don’t feel ready to make a decision, you’re probably right to sit on the fence for a while longer.

Scorpio

Scorpio
Scorpio

Retrograde Mercury moves back into your solar tenth house today, dear Scorpio. Mercury will transit here until September 9th, but will be retrograde only until the 5th. This period may bring some confusion to business plans. It’s a good time for review, but not the best period for clear-cut answers and obvious, spelled-out-for-you direction. Reconsider things, but wait it out before making final decisions, if possible. If you’re going over the same old ground, be sure to do so a little differently so that you get better results. Watch that you don’t misrepresent yourself with what you say (or don’t say). Keep in mind that today you are seeing situations and people from a place of fear or worry, which can distort your perceptions. Knowing why you’re doing this can help you keep your perspective. You may feel the need to guard against people who aim to take credit for your ideas or work. Things will look much rosier tomorrow as you let go of inhibitions a little.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius
Sagittarius

Mercury, still retrograde, slips back into your solar ninth house today, dear Sagittarius, and backtracking continues but now in different ways. You may need to review travel or educational plans, or there can be some mix-ups that introduce delays into your life. After Mercury ends its retrograde cycle on September 5th, these things will gradually clear up and straighten out. For now, taking a look back at recent decisions and choices may be particularly useful. New information will emerge later. Check your facts before expressing your opinions too forcefully, as information you receive may not be complete before the 5th. Today, interpersonal communication problems are likely, so be sure that you are very clear, leaving very little up to the imagination. However, it’s also wise to consider that fears or rejection are strongly at work just under the surface of things right now, so others’ emotionally distant behavior may not be a cause for serious concern. There could be pangs of separation or discontent. Try not to stress over actions (or inaction) by those close to you. Recognize that your emotional needs for support are stronger than usual, and not everyone is in sync with this energy.

Capricorn

Capricorn
Capricorn

Mercury is still retrograde – a cycle that began August 12th – but today slips back into the sign of Leo and your solar eighth house, dear Capricorn. You may need to review recently made financial commitments and shared resources, or intimate relationships. Power dynamics can change quite dramatically in a partnership. Try to use a different approach and look at old problems from a new angle or perspective. If they’re re-emerging, then they need to be put to rest another way. Focus less on the details or facts and more on the bigger picture or what it all means for best results whenMercury is retrograde, which it is until September 5th. Also today, there can be delays or withholding, but try to keep your head up. After all, they’re likely to lead to greater appreciation for what you have or to what ends up materializing for you down the road. You may have to forgo a pleasurable activity to fill your duties. This orientation can be useful as you may very well need to pay particular attention to practical matters.

Aquarius

Aquarius
Aquarius

Mercury, still retrograde, slips back into your partnership sector today, dear Aquarius. Mercury has been retrograde since August 12th and will continue this apparent backward motion until September 5th. During this period, you may be returning to old problems or situations surrounding partnership matters, either personal or business. It’s not the time to fence someone (or yourself) in. Give people space and hope that they return the favor. Communications can be muddled up for the time being, but delays can also help you to understand your needs and values more completely. There can be a tendency to see flaws and inadequacies under a magnifying glass today, especially our own! It may be that you need to slow down to get a better or more realistic view of your life. Reflect, be objective about your relationships, and get in better touch with what it is you truly want and value. Also be a little cautious with money until you see things more clearly.

Pisces

PIsces
Pisces

Mercury is still retrograde (since August 12th), dear Pisces, and while Mercury’s been moving through your partnership zone, it today slips back into your work and health sector. This takes some of the scrutiny away from a partnership but could stimulate misunderstandings or the need to backtrack in your job. There may be some delays or returning to old problems related to your health, work, and daily routines. It can be difficult to see all of the facts before you so that schedules can quickly get out of whack, or projects you began in the last month need revision. There may be the need to review, redo, or double check your work. Today, there can be some negative thinking, withdrawal, or emotional distance in your interactions. This is likely not a symptom of a bigger problem but rather a day when we’re more self-protective and cautious with our feelings than usual. Fortunately, you can plug away at your work or the things you need to do, and you can feel good about a job well done.

Tarot Card of the Day

Seven of Swords

August 30th, 2017

The Seven of this suit typically refers to mental preparedness, acquired through the use of imagination, including the rehearsing and visualizing of desired results. This card represents the positive mental habits of a natural winner. The image most often associated with this card is that of a canny warrior who has infiltrated into the enemy camp on the eve of a fateful battle, checking out their preparations and stealing their swords. Such a move is guaranteed to demoralize the enemy and undermine their performance in the upcoming confrontation.

Putting it in modern terms, one who draws this card needs to work smarter, not harder. Think long and deep, study all the angles and put yourself in the shoes of your competition. As a result, you will have such a thorough grasp of the whole situation that there will be no surprises — and no excuses for anything but success. Skillful preparation justifies the optimism of the natural winner.

Learn the Tarot: The Strength Card

General Meaning

The Strength Tarot card represents nature, which, however wild in its primal form, is tamed by our subtler, finer self — our feminine side, our inner self. The will and passion of our instinctive nature does not need to be broken, but refined and brought to consciousness, so that all levels of creation may come into harmony.

The feminine soul-force contains a persuasive power that can nurture and induce cooperation from others, stilling disruptive energies by harmonizing differences in the spirit of collective good will.

In the Advice Position

Clearly distinguish between your ego and your intuitive self.

The card in the Advice position suggests a course of action which will harmonize what you want with what is currently possible.

The Strength card advises that you assertively discipline yourself and separate self interest from enlightened wisdom. Deliberately identify with your intuition, even if it works against the desires of your willful ego.

Demand and expect the same from others who have some power in this situation. You cannot challenge them to live to a higher standard if you, yourself, have not yet done so. Influence others by setting an example of integrity. Your self-esteem will increase to the degree that you succeed in your efforts.

Daily Love Tarot Card

The Lovers

August 30th, 2017

The Lovers

Today, The Lovers are fickle, promiscuous, or both. Because of that, they live for entanglements. Unless you are cautious, they can pull you in with them. Don’t leave someone if your relationship has encountered a rough patch. Go only if you have tried everything and the relationship still isn’t working for either of you. If you haven’t tried, now is the time to give things another chance for either openness or for closure.

Daily Erotic Tarot Card

The Hanged Man

August 30th, 2017

The Hanged Man

Acceptance is the keyword of the Hanged Man, and with this card showing up it means you’re out of moves, so to speak, which is kind of nice because now the games can stop and you can get down to the real nitty-gritty. Your sexual partners aren’t perfect and neither are you, but you can still have a lot of fun together. The Hanged Man may not be in the best position, but he certainly makes the best of it – and this card urges you to do the same when it comes to your sex life.

Psychic Tip of the Day

LOVE AND TRUST

While your lover’s secrets are safe with you, make sure that trust is given freely, not earned. Will you be loved for who you are or what you have accomplished?

Your Ancient Symbol Card for Today

The Western Dragon

Unlike the beneficent Easter Dragon, The Western Dragon is a symbol of totally unleashed destructive power that is set upon anyone who crosses the Dragon’s path. The Western Dragon also hordes treasures that should rightfully be ours, and whose absence deprives us from being complete. The challenges set before us by the Western Dragon are truly prodigious, because they denote a force whose sole intent is not simply to keep us from moving forward in our lives, but to usurp all that we have previously gained as well. What is even more disturbing about the force behind the Western Dragon is that it may well indicate primal forces in ourselves so powerful that they do in fact turn us into our own worst enemy.

As a daily card, The Western Dragon is a powerful negative force intent upon thwarting your progress. In such a short time frame it is most likely you’re being undermined by an external force–someone who wants what you have gained or gains your are near realizing. While formidable, this bellicose entity does have vulnerabilities. First, there is nothing subtle about the forces represented by The Western Dragon, so the source will be easy for you to identify. Secondly, The Western Dragon represents undisciplined, primal energies that aren’t easy to control, so they are susceptible to logical responses steeped in self control. In short, don’t panic, act deliberately and decisively, and you will weather this storm

Fox

Fox medicine represents the ability to blend in. She can change colors to blend with the seasons—becoming almost invisible against a backdrop of snow or foliage. Fox also has an amazing sense of smell that enables her to sniff out dangerous situations. Your Charm for Today

Today’s Meaning:
Guests and visitors will come calling. Their visit brings happiness and joy. This aspect will reflect these emotions for weeks after the visit.

General Description:
Crescents were worn by the ancients to safeguard them against witchcraft and danger. From the very early Eastern symbole, horseshoes came to be regarded by the Greeks and Romans as charms against sickness and the plague. In the middle ages horseshoes were used as amulets for witchcraft and even today are looked upon as lucky. When the representation of the hand of strength was worn with the crescent it signified hospitatlity and generosity. Hands of Might are painted on houses in Italy, Syria, Turkey and in the East to protect the buildings from misfortune and the inmates from death. The blue beads were worn to avert the evil eyes.

To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one’s family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one’s own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.

Your Earth Sky News for Wednesday, August 30 – Closest far-moon of 2017 on August 30

Tonight – August 30, 2017 – the moon is quite close to the planet Saturn on the sky’s dome, and it’s also at or near apogee – the moon’s farthest point from Earth in its monthly orbit. The apogee on August 30, 2017, has the distinction of being the closest apogee of 2017, making tonight’s moon the closest far-moon of 2017.

Wait … what? Closest far-moon. Yes, on August 30, 2017, at 11:25 UTC, the moon reaches apogee – its most distant point in its monthly orbit. But this apogee is the closest of the 13 lunar apogees that occur in 2017.

At this month’s closest apogee, the moon lies 404,308 km distant. Contrast this with the farthest apogee of the year on December 19, 2017, when the moon will lie 406,603 km away. The mean apogee distance is 405,504 km.

The moon is also near first quarter phase now. First quarter moon happened the day before this month’s lunar apogee, on August 29. It’s no coincidence that the first quarter moon – and closest far-moon – happen in close vicinity of one another.

In any year, it’s either the first quarter moon or last quarter moon that closely coincides with the year’s closest apogee. Next year, in 2018, the closest apogee of the year (404,144 km) will happen when the last quarter moon and lunar apogee fall within a few hours of each other on April 8, 2018.

Often – but not always – the year’s closest apogee will recur in a period of 14 lunar months (14 successive returns to the same phase). That’s because 14 lunar months is nearly commensurate to 15 returns to apogee.

14 lunar months x 29.53059 days = 413.428 days
15 returns to apogee x 27.55455 days = 413.318 days

This 413-day period is approximately equal to one year, month month and 18 days. And, guess what? Fourteen lunar months lunar after 2018’s closest apogee on April 8, 2018 (404,144 km), the following year’s closest apogee will fall on May 26, 2019 (404,138 km). Then 14 lunar months after the year’s closest apogee on May 26, 2019 (404,138 km), it’ll be the year’s closest apogee on July 12, 2020 (404,199 km).

Today – August 30, 2017 – the lunar apogee distance of 404,308 km presents the closest apogee of the year.

Your Astrology for Wednesday, August 30

The Moon is in Sagittarius.
The Moon is waxing and in its First Quarter phase.
The First Quarter Moon occurred yesterday, and a Full Moon will occur on September 6th.
Mercury is retrograde (Mercury is retrograde from August 12-September 5).

Overview for Tuesday, August 30

The Moon is in Sagittarius all day, promoting a happy, spontaneous, and curious attitude. We have a desire to venture out and about and require less prompting than usual to get moving. Bored with the mundane, something that cuts through monotony or breaks the routine can serve as emotional refreshment. We’re inclined to take a philosophical attitude to problems or challenges in our lives. A change of scenery is in order today.

Even so, with the Moon conjunct Saturn this morning, we may need to take care of some business or deal with a responsibility that comes to light. Unlike yesterday, we’re ready to bring something down to earth, and we’re less inclined to go over the top. We’re also in a good position to cooperate and mingle with others and enjoy ourselves in the process.

Moon in Sagittarius

The Moon is traveling through Sagittarius. The grass looks greener on the other side during this time. Jump ship. Learn a new language. Tell it like it is. Make people laugh.

The Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don’t want to plan ahead, and prefer to “wing it”.

The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve “winging it”, travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.

The Sky This Week for August 30 to September 3

The Aurigid meteor shower, Asteroid 3122 Florence, and other cool things to look for in the sky this week.
By Richard Talcott

Wednesday, August 30

The waxing gibbous Moon makes an even better guide to Saturn this evening, when our satellite lies some 6° to the upper left of the planet. Shining at magnitude 0.4, Saturn is the brightest object anywhere near the Moon. The two lie highest in the south after sunset and then dip toward the southwestern horizon, setting shortly after midnight. When you view Saturn through a telescope this week, the planet’s disk measures 17″ across while its dramatic ring system spans 39″ and tilts 27° to our line of sight.

The Moon reaches apogee, the farthest point in its orbit around Earth, at 7:25 a.m. EDT. It then lies 251,226 miles (404,308 kilometers) from Earth’s center.

Thursday, August 31

The variable star Algol in Perseus reaches minimum brightness at 4:27 a.m. EDT. If you start watching it on the evening of the 30th (it rises in the northeast late in twilight), you can see its brightness diminish by 70 percent over the course of about five hours as its magnitude drops from 2.1 to 3.4. This eclipsing binary star runs through a cycle from minimum to maximum and back every 2.87 days.

The Aurigid meteor shower peaks tonight, with the best views coming when the radiant (which lies in the constellation Auriga) climbs high before dawn. Although this minor shower typically produces only 6 meteors per hour under optimal conditions, it occasionally performs much better. Rates six times higher than normal occurred in 1935, 1986, and 1994, and viewers recorded up to 130 meteors per hour in 2007. No one knows when the shower will burst out again, but the waxing gibbous Moon sets by 2 a.m. local daylight time, providing three hours of dark skies to check it out.

Friday, September 1

Brilliant Venus makes a tempting target all week, but the best views should come before dawn today and tomorrow. Both mornings find the planet 1° south of the magnificent Beehive star cluster (M44) in Cancer. The two make a lovely binocular sight from the time they rise around 4 a.m. local daylight time until twilight begins to wash out the cluster’s stars an hour later. Of course, twilight has little effect on Venus because it shines so brightly, at magnitude –3.9. A telescope reveals the planet’s 12″-diameter disk, which appears a bit more than 80 percent illuminated.

Saturday, September 2

Most people have never seen an object other than the Moon or rarely a comet shift relative to the background stars in real time. But the first week of September offers observers with telescopes a nice chance to see one of these rapid movers in action. Asteroid 3122 Florence — named after nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale — races past Earth this week, peaking at a rate of 9° per day. That works out to 22″, about two-thirds of Jupiter’s current diameter, every minute. The asteroid glows at 9th magnitude on September’s first three evenings and fades to 10th magnitude the following three nights. You can find it moving from Delphinus tonight into Vulpecula tomorrow and Cygnus on the 4th.

Sunday, September 3

If you look overhead as darkness falls anytime this week, your eyes will fall on the brilliant star Vega in the constellation Lyra the Harp. At magnitude 0.0, Vega is the brightest member of the prominent Summer Triangle asterism. The Triangle’s second-brightest star, magnitude 0.8 Altair in Aquila the Eagle, lies some 35° southeast of Vega. The asterism’s dimmest member, magnitude 1.3 Deneb in Cygnus the Swan, stands about 25° east-northeast of Vega. Deneb trails Vega across the sky by about two hours, and passes through the zenith at approximately 11 p.m. local daylight time.

On Wednesday, August 30, We Celebrate the God Mercury

Mercury (/ˈmɜːrkjʊri/; Latin: Mercurius [mɛrˈkʊ.ri.ʊs] About this sound listen (help·info)) is a major Roman god, being one of the Dii Consentes within the ancient Roman pantheon. He is the patron god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence (and thus poetry), messages/communication (including divination), travelers, boundaries, luck, trickery and thieves; he is also the guide of souls to the underworld. He was considered the son of Maia and Jupiter in Roman mythology. His name is possibly related to the Latin word merx (“merchandise”; cf. merchant, commerce, etc.), mercari (to trade), and merces (wages); another possible connection is the Proto-Indo-European root merĝ- for “boundary, border” (cf. Old English “mearc”, Old Norse “mark” and Latin “margō”) and Greek οὖρος (by analogy of Arctūrus/Ἀρκτοῦρος), as the “keeper of boundaries,” referring to his role as bridge between the upper and lower worlds.[citation needed] In his earliest forms, he appears to have been related to the Etruscan deity Turms; both gods share characteristics with the Greek god Hermes. He is often depicted holding the caduceus in his left hand. Similar to his Greek equivalent (Hermes) he was awarded the caduceus by Apollo who handed him a magic wand, which later turned into the caduceus.

Mercury did not appear among the numinous di indigetes of early Roman religion. Rather, he subsumed the earlier Dei Lucrii as Roman religion was syncretized with Greek religion during the time of the Roman Republic, starting around the 4th century BC. From the beginning, Mercury had essentially the same aspects as Hermes, wearing winged shoes (talaria) and a winged hat (petasos), and carrying the caduceus, a herald’s staff with two entwined snakes that was Apollo’s gift to Hermes. He was often accompanied by a cockerel, herald of the new day, a ram or goat, symbolizing fertility, and a tortoise, referring to Mercury’s legendary invention of the lyre from a tortoise shell.

Like Hermes, he was also a god of messages, eloquence and of trade, particularly of the grain trade. Mercury was also considered a god of abundance and commercial success, particularly in Gaul, where he was said to have been particularly revered. He was also, like Hermes, the Romans’ psychopomp, leading newly deceased souls to the afterlife. Additionally, Ovid wrote that Mercury carried Morpheus’ dreams from the valley of Somnus to sleeping humans.

Archeological evidence from Pompeii suggests that Mercury was among the most popular of Roman gods. The god of commerce was depicted on two early bronze coins of the Roman Republic, the Sextans and the Semuncia.

When they described the gods of Celtic and Germanic tribes, rather than considering them separate deities, the Romans interpreted them as local manifestations or aspects of their own gods, a cultural trait called the interpretatio Romana. Mercury, in particular, was reported as becoming extremely popular among the nations the Roman Empire conquered; Julius Caesar wrote of Mercury being the most popular god in Britain and Gaul, regarded as the inventor of all the arts. This is probably because, in the Roman syncretism, Mercury was equated with the Celtic god Lugus, and in this aspect was commonly accompanied by the Celtic goddess Rosmerta. Although Lugus may originally have been a deity of light or the sun (though this is disputed), similar to the Roman Apollo, his importance as a god of trade made him more comparable to Mercury, and Apollo was instead equated with the Celtic deity Belenus.

Romans associated Mercury with the Germanic god Wotan, by interpretatio Romana; 1st-century Roman writer Tacitus identifies him as the chief god of the Germanic peoples.

Mercury is known to the Romans as Mercurius and occasionally in earlier writings as Merqurius, Mirqurios or Mircurios, had a number of epithets representing different aspects or roles, or representing syncretisms with non-Roman deities. The most common and significant of these epithets included the following:

Mercurius Artaios, a syncretism of Mercury with the Celtic god Artaios, a deity of bears and hunting who was worshiped at Beaucroissant, France.
Mercurius Arvernus, a syncretism of the Celtic Arvernus with Mercury. Arvernus was worshiped in the Rhineland, possibly as a particular deity of the Arverni tribe, though no dedications to Mercurius Arvernus occur in their territory in the Auvergne region of central France.
Mercurius Cimbrianus, a syncretism of Mercury with a god of the Cimbri sometimes thought to represent Odin.
Mercurius Cissonius, a combination of Mercury with the Celtic god Cissonius, who is written of in the area spanning from Cologne, Germany to Saintes, France.

Mercurius Esibraeus, a syncretism of the Iberian deity Esibraeus with the Roman deity Mercury. Esibraeus is mentioned only in an inscription found at Medelim, Portugal, and is possibly the same deity as Banda Isibraiegus, who is invoked in an inscription from the nearby village of Bemposta.
Mercurius Gebrinius, a syncretism of Mercury with the Celtic or Germanic Gebrinius, known from an inscription on an altar in Bonn, Germany.
Mercurius Moccus, from a Celtic god, Moccus, who was equated with Mercury, known from evidence at Langres, France. The name Moccus (“pig”) implies that this deity was connected to boar-hunting

Mercurius Visucius, a syncretism of the Celtic god Visucius with the Roman god Mercury, attested in an inscription from Stuttgart, Germany. Visucius was worshiped primarily in the frontier area of the empire in Gaul and Germany. Although he was primarily associated with Mercury, Visucius was also sometimes linked to the Roman god Mars, as a dedicatory inscription to “Mars Visucius” and Visucia, Visicius’ female counterpart, was found in Gaul.

In Virgil’s Aeneid, Mercury reminds Aeneas of his mission to found the city of Rome. In Ovid’s Fasti, Mercury is assigned to escort the nymph Larunda to the underworld. Mercury, however, falls in love with Larunda and makes love to her on the way. Larunda thereby becomes mother to two children, referred to as the Lares, invisible household gods.

Mercury’s temple in Rome was situated in the Circus Maximus, between the Aventine and Palatine hills, and was built in 495 BC.

That year saw disturbances at Rome between the patrician senators and the plebeians, which led to a secession of the plebs in the following year. At the completion of its construction, a dispute emerged between the consuls Appius Claudius Sabinus Regillensis and Publius Servilius Priscus Structus as to which of them should have the honour of dedicating the temple. The senate referred the decision to the popular assembly, and also decreed that whichever was chosen should also exercise additional duties, including presiding over the markets, establish a merchants’ guild, and exercising the functions of the pontifex maximus. The people, because of the ongoing public discord, and in order to spite the senate and the consuls, instead awarded the honour of dedicating the temple to the senior military officer of one of the legions named Marcus Laetorius. The senate and the consuls, in particular the conservative Appius, were outraged at this decision, and it inflamed the ongoing situation.

The temple was regarded as a fitting place to worship a swift god of trade and travel, since it was a major center of commerce as well as a racetrack. Since it stood between the plebeian stronghold on the Aventine and the patrician center on the Palatine, it also emphasized the role of Mercury as a mediator.

Because Mercury was not one of the early deities surviving from the Roman Kingdom, he was not assigned a flamen (“priest”), but he did have his own major festival, on 15 May, the Mercuralia. During the Mercuralia, merchants sprinkled water from his sacred well near the Porta Capena on their heads.

The Magickal Day of Wednesday

Wednesday is named for Woden himself, although the Romans called it dies Mercurii. This is a day associated with the color purple, the planet Mercury, and the metal quicksilver – which is also called mercury. See a pattern here?

When it comes to deities… yes, Mercury! However, there are a few other gods associated with Wednesday, including Odin and Hermes, Athena, and Lugh. Gemstones like adventurine and agate come in handy as well, as do plants such as aspen trees, lilies, lavender and even ferns.

Business and job-related issues, communication, loss and debt, traveling, and journeys are all tied in to Wednesday. This is a good day to do a working to open up lines of communication – especially if your own actions are preventing you from being an effective speaker or listener. Go someplace new or return to an old favorite stomping ground, step up your game, and settle up your accounts.

The Witches Guide to Wednesday

Ruler: Wodin, Mercury

Colors: Orange, light blue, and gray

Power Hours: Sunrise and the 8th, 16th, and 24th hours following

Keywords: Success, creativity, communication

The word Wednesday is reminiscent of the Norse wind god Wodin, which is referenced in the popular rhyme verse “Wednesday’s child is full of woe.” This does not mean that those born on this day are full of sorrow or trouble. To be full of Woden (Wodin) means to be full of wind, to be spirited. Woden was such a powerful pagan god that the German church fathers changed the name of his day to Mittwoch, meaning midweek, in an attempt to exorcise his influence.

In the Spanish word for Wednesday, miercoles, we clearly see its connection to Mercury. Under the guidance of Mercury; Wednesday is a day of swift activity, communication, correspondence, and phone calls. This is a good day for journalists, writers, poets, bargaining, hiring employees, and visiting friends.

On Wednesdays, the hour of sunrise and every eight hours after that are also ruled by Mercury, making these times of the day doubly blessed. These are the strongest four hours for ritual work. Check your local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac to determine when sunrise occurs.

Let’s Talk Witch – Points of Ritual Etiquette

Rituals are religious rites and should be regarded with respect. When performing rituals in the company of others, be early. In covens you may be expected to wear ritual attire and perhaps to participate in preparation of the ritual space.

Some covens work Sky Clad, others wear robes of a particular color. If you are guest at a coven meeting holding an open ritual, a black robe is generally acceptable. Typically shoes are not worn, although this is optional for outside rituals. Wear jewelry that you only put on for rituals, and make sure you do not have a ticking watch.

Turn off your cell phone and silence any alarms on your watch or other device that you may routinely carry. Be respectful and polite of the other people in the circle and remain focused on the ritual.

If there is someone in the coven with whom you have had a disagreement, or with whom you just don’t get along, don’t take those negative energies into the circle.

If you are in the circle and feel a need to leave for whatever reason, ask the High Priestess or Priest to cut a door in the circle. Simply passing through the circle will dissipate it.

This is not true for animals, however. If you are a solitaire with a dog or cat, your animal companion can move in and out of the circle at will. Their energy is pure, and they come to the circle from a place of perfect trust and love. You may need to gently exclude younger or rowdier pets, but many animals seem to be psychically drawn to ritual work.

Cutting a door is done by facing the Northeast and holding the point of the athame downward near the ground. Use the tip to pierce the energy wall and draw an archway (moving counter clockwise) large enough to pass through. When you remove the athame, you are free to walk out. Once outside, close the door by putting the athame at the lower North Estern point and tracing the perimeter clockwise.

If the High Priestess or High Priest will not open a door for you and you feel you must leave the circle, thank the Goddess and God, and cut the door yourself.

Good Wednesday Morning Brothers & Sisters of the Craft!

--C59--
Good Wednesday, my dear brothers & sisters of The Craft. It has been a while since we last talked. What I have to discuss with you this morning is not a pleasant subject and I am sure you have already seen it on the News. I am referring to the devastating flood in Texas and the surrounding areas. The situation there breaks my heart and every time I see a child being carried across flood waters or a lady talking about everything she had lost, I cry. I cannot begin to understand or even feel what that might be like. All I can think is those poor, poor, people. I pray the Goddess to watch over them and give them strength to go on. Truthfully, when you are homeless, no clothes, no food and had to walk off and leave everything you own  how the words, “it will get better” can be of comfort. I can feel their confusion and their lost. I can also feel those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. My heart truly breaks for them, it is a very horrible experience what these brave people are facing right now.

As you know, we are located in Kentucky. We have the remnants of the storm coming our way. It won’t be like anything the people in Texas faced. It will, however, be a very stark reminder of what can occur and what does occur and most of all we are powerless to stop it. If I had my way, we would be in Texas helping out in anyway possible. But that is not likely going to happen. I figure we would be more in the way than help. I know personally, we have many brothers & sisters in that area. Since we can’t go there in personal, we would like to make an offer to help them rebuild when the time comes. It might not seem like much, unfortunately, it is the best we can do. For all our brothers & sisters who lost everything in the flood, remember on thing, we want to help you rebuild your altars, your statues, any item of faith you might have lost. We are offering you a 50% off in our store. I wish I could just freely give everything you need but we have to pay for the merchandise ourselves before we can pass it on to you.

I hope you will remember our offer when it comes time to rebuild. All we require is a physical address that can be goggled and turns up in the flooded areas and you get the 50% discount. I wish we could do more but perhaps in some small way this will remind you that our Goddess loves you and so do we.

You are in our hearts and prayers, Texas,

Stay strong,

You are not alone, you are constantly in our thoughts and prayers,

We love you

Witchcraft

The word “witchcraft” derives from the Saxon wicca, some-times translated as “wise person” but more accurately derived from an Indo-European root, “weik,” that produced words in various Western languages related to magic, religion, and divination. Currently, the word is used to designate a variety of very different but vaguely related phenomena including, but not limited to, (1) the magical/religious practitioners in a variety of third world pre-industrial societies; (2) the Satanism described in the anti-witchcraft books beginning in the late fifteenth century in Europe; (3) the Neopagan followers of Wicca, the religion started by Gerald B. Gardner in the 1940s; and (4) individuals (primarily female) who are reputed to have psychic abilities.

Goddess Bless The People of Texas

Tis Just a Second Blessed

Just a twinkle of eye;
eyes meet in unison of thought;
mirrors of passion flood forth;

The time holds not them;
graced by perfection’s touch;
matched together in mere glimpse;

casual is the moment;
no pressure, no rush of action;
gentle is their pace, marked in heartbeats;

escaping the grasp of locked eyes;
they converse of beliefs, strong in faith
a gentle caress of kind, past is replaced anew;

A new ground broken, new passions explored;
all things to be explored; together;
hands clasp between them they walk, bold;

the road ahead filled with obstacles;
time’s test looming about them, over them, near;
confident is their gait, faith their stay, strong;

A third figure is there, with them, between them;
holding them together, between them, around them;
shining through the eyes of them, a space filled;
an urge replaced in fulfillment, a establishment of truth;

all things seem strange to behold, but sure is the ground;
things, puzzles fall into place, visions beckon forth to pass;
only hope and faith hold the fabric of this together;
this plan placed between them, and becoming of them, intertwined;

This is the way of things.. all this too shall come to pass;

The Sky This Week for August 28 to September 3

The Aurigid meteor shower, Asteroid 3122 Florence, and other cool things to look for in the sky this week.
By Richard Talcott

Monday, August 28

Distant Neptune reaches opposition and peak visibility a week from tonight, but the view now is essentially the same. The ice giant planet rises during evening twilight and climbs nearly halfway to the zenith in the southern sky by 1:30 a.m. local daylight time. The magnitude 7.8 planet lies in Aquarius, 1.3° east of 4th-magnitude Lambda (l) Aquarii. You’ll need binoculars to spy Neptune and a telescope to see its blue-gray disk, which spans 2.4″.

Tuesday, August 29

First Quarter Moon arrives at 4:13 a.m. EDT. Our satellite won’t rise until after 2 p.m. local daylight time, however, so observers in the Americas won’t see it precisely half-lit. As darkness falls this evening, the Moon appears 57 percent illuminated and resides among the background stars of Ophiuchus, some 8° to the right of Saturn.

A tale of two eclipses

A past Astronomy contributor compares his eclipse experiences.
By Ed Tant

The event called “The Great American Eclipse” lived up to its billing on August 21. Here in Georgia, the total solar eclipse cut a narrow path through the northeastern part of the state before heading out to sea off the Atlantic coast. The last time a solar eclipse was visible in the South was in 1984, when a spectacular annular eclipse traveled diagonally from Louisiana to the Chesapeake Bay. My article about that event, “Sunshow in the Southland,” appeared in the September 1984 edition of Astronomy.

Flash forward nearly a third of a century. My wife, Joy, and I traveled from our home in Athens to the small northeast Georgia town of Toccoa, where totality would last for 1 minute and 59 seconds. In 1984, the annular eclipse was at its maximum for only 9 fleeting seconds. It was a brief but amazing cosmic event that was but a preview of this year’s total eclipse of the Sun.

Toccoa is a charming town of about 8500 people that hosted an influx of eclipse viewers on August 21. Traffic jams plagued many of the roads in Georgia on eclipse day, but the highways to Toccoa were clear. Townspeople and out-of-town eclipse chasers waited patiently for the big event, which local businesses and civic groups touted as “Totally Toccoa Eclipse 2017.”

When I viewed the May 30, 1984, annular eclipse from the tiny hamlet of Maysville, Georgia, the weather that day was crisp and the sky was clear — perfect eclipse weather. In Toccoa on August 21, the weather was hot as the Sun performed its disappearing act but the sky was once again clear and blue.

During the 1984 annular eclipse, I viewed the event with a projection plate attached to a 2.4-inch refracting telescope. “Baily’s Beads,” caused by sunlight peeking through lunar mountains and valleys, were visible, as was the planet Venus in the briefly darkened face of the Sun. The celestial show was even better on August 21. The unaided eye could take in the whole performance during the moments of totality.
As the Sun winked out above the railroad station in Toccoa, the sight quickly transcended the annular eclipse of 33 years ago. In 1984 I wrote that the annular eclipse resembled a Stygian black tunnel with its entrance outlined by a ring of solar fire. This time the eclipse was total and the experience was even more profound.

During both eclipses, the sky darkened to a twilight cast, streetlights blinked on in the ersatz evening, the temperature dropped noticeably, crickets chirped, and a brilliant Venus was visible in the sky near the Sun. There the similarity ends. The totality in Toccoa was a magical, mystical and majestic experience that was both scientific and spiritual. It brought to mind the words of William Wordsworth: “ … a lovely apparition sent to be a moment’s ornament.”

From our vantage point on August 21, Joy and I marveled at the “diamond ring effect” that lived up to its name during the Toccoa eclipse. Then we beheld the silvery corona of the Sun’s super-hot atmosphere like a gleaming halo around the face of our life-giving star. The corona is invisible and the diamond ring does not occur during an annular eclipse, so people who traveled to zones of totality like Toccoa enjoyed a transient but unforgettable experience that they will treasure all their lives.

The Great American Eclipse of 2017 was cosmic choreography that left its audience both humbled and uplifted. When the total eclipse sky show returns to the United States in 2024, more large audiences of Americans will be ready for a repeat performance of an unforgettable show.

Today, August 28th, We Celebrate the Sun God Ra

Ra

Ra, Re Ra (Re)

Ra (Re) was the primary name of the sun god of Ancient Egypt. He was often considered to be the King of the Gods and thus the patron of the pharaoh and one of the central gods of the Egyptian pantheon. He was also described as the creator of everything. Ra was so powerful and popular and his worship was so enduring that some modern commentators have argued that the Egyptian religion was in fact a form of veiled monotheism with Ra as the one god. This seems to be somewhat of an overstatement, but underlines his primary position within religious texts throughout Egyptian history.

It is sometimes proposed that the pyramids represent the rays of light extending from the sun and thus these great monuments connected the king with Ra. The Egyptians also built solar temples in honour of Ra. Unlike the standard type of Egyptian temple, these temples were open to the sunlight and did not feature a statue of the god because he was represented by the sunlight itself. Instead the temple centred on an obelisk and altar. The most significant early solar temple is thought to be the one erected in Heliopolis, sometimes known as “Benu-Phoenix”. Its location was thought to be the spot where Ra first emerged at the beginning of creation, and the city took its name (“Iwn”) from the word for a pillar.

History
Ra was an ancient god, but not the oldest of the gods; the first references to Ra date from the Second Dynasty. However, by the Fifth Dynasty he was a powerful god who was closely associated with the pharaoh. The Pharaoh was already seen as the embodiment of Horus and so the two gods became linked, sometimes as the composite deity Ra-Horakhty (“Ra (is) Horus of the Horizon”). Ra also came to be associated with Atum (the creator god of the Ennead in Heliopolis) as Atum-Ra. By the Fifth Dynasty the pharaoh was referred to as the son of Ra and the name of Ra was incorporated into the throne name of every king from that point onwards. Many Old Kingdom pharaohs built sun temples in which to worship Ra.
Ra-Horakhty (Re-Horakhty) copyright Guillaume Blanchard

The Middle Kingdom saw the rise to prominence of Amun of Thebes. Although Ra kept his association with the pharaoh, he was to some degree absorbed by Amun as Amun-Ra . However, the priests of Amun became very wealthy and influential and so some of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom chose to elevate Ra in his stead, perhaps partly because he was already closely associated with the pharaoh. For example, Thuthmosis promoted Re-Horakhty as his favoured god while Amenhotep III took the epithet “the dazzling sun” and named his wife’s pleasure boat “the Aten Gleams”. His successor (and probable son) Akhenaten went one step further and rejected Amun and many of the other gods in favour of The Aten (a solar god).

The worship of the Egyptian God Ra was at its peak during the New Kingdom. Many of the tombs in the Valley of the Kings (dating from this period) included depictions of Ra’s journey through the underworld over twelve “hours” or stages. In the fifth hour, Ra dies and is reunited with Osiris in the underworld, but in the twelfth hour he is reborn as the scarab (Khepri). Sun temples were again constructed during the New Kingdom (although those of the Ararna Period are dedicated to the The Aten).

Amun-Ra was also popular in Nubia and was the chief deity of the Nubian Kingdom of Napata during the Twentyfifth Dynasty. The Greeks associated Ra with Zeus and so he remained popular during the Ptolemaic Period. However, after this point Egypt was governed by a series of foreign rulers who were not associated with the god of the pharaohs and so his popularity declined.

Associations with other gods
Ra was often described as the father of the gods. He was sometimes thought to be married to Hesat or Hathor although the latter is usually referred to as his daughter. As his worship was pre-dated by that of some of his “children” (such as Hathor and Horus) it seems likely that he took on this role when he was associated with the creator god Atum.

According to the Pyramid Texts, Ra (as Atum) emerged from the waters of Nun as a benben stone (an obelisk-like pillar). He then spat forth Shu (air) and Tefnut (moisture), and Tefnut in turn gave birth to Geb (earth) and Nut (sky). Ra tried to separate Geb and Nut by placing Shu between them and decreed that Nut could not give birth on any day of the calendar. However, Thoth won an extra five days from the moon so that Nut could give birth to Osiris, Set, Isis, Nephthys and Horus the Elder.

It was thought that Ra “died” or was swallowed by Nut every evening as the sun dipped below the horizon. He travelled through the world of the dead by night and was then reborn in the morning (making Nut both his granddaughter and his mother). At sunset he was linked to Horakhty (Horus on the Horizon) and Atum and at dawn he was linked to the scarab beetle, Khepri (“the Emerging One”) and Nefertum

Ra-Horakhty-Atum was associated with Osiris as the manifestation of the sun at night. When Osiris was murdered by his brother Set, he became the God of the Underworld. Thus the Pharaoh was the son of Ra who ruled as the living Horus and who became Osiris on his death.

According to another myth, Ra ruled on earth as Pharaoh until he became old and weary. The people had lost respect for him and no longer obeyed his laws and so Ra decided that they should be punished. He sent his “Eye” to teach them a lesson, but then had to arrange to get her drunk to prevent her killing everyone. Once the danger had been averted, Ra decided it was time for him to leave the world to Horus ( who took his place as the king) and travel across the sky on Nut’s back.

The Magickal Day of Monday

Monday is the day of the moon itself, and it’s a day that’s connected to lunar colors like silver, white, or even a pale blue. Metals and gemstones like silver, pearl, opal and moonstone all come into play today.

There are plenty of deities associated with the moon – Thoth and Diana for instance – and herbal correspondences include many members of the mint family. Utilize wintergreen or peppermint, as well as catnip, comfrey, sage and chamomile in your workings.

When it comes to Monday magic, because of that lunar connection, it’s a good time to focus on workings related to childbearing and family life, purity and virginity, healing, wisdom, and intuition. Do a little bit of self exploration and work on developing your intuition – learn to trust your gut. Celebrate birth and life, and make some magic to fix what is broken.

The Witches Guide to Monday

In the word Monday, we can see part of the word Moon. In the romance languages such as Italian or Spanish, this day of the week is called Lunes and clearly relates to the word lunar. On Mondays, a variety of magick may be worked. Because Monday centers on the energies of the Moon, things like dreams, feminine energy, health, success in spiritual pursuits, domestic matters, and things of family origin are especially important this day.

Mondays are best for love magick and anything concerning home or family, thus old saying, Mondays child is fair of face, which seems clearly to relate to the themes of love and health.

Angels of Monday are Gabriel, Arcan, Missabu, and Abuzaha. Arcan is known as the king of the angels of air and the “ruler” of Monday. Abuzaha (Abuzohar) serves Monday, and is very responsive to invocations and ritual magick. Missabu is a ministering angel of Arcan.

Check whether the moon is waning or waxing to determine what your spell will be. During waning moons, do spells to rid yourself of obstacles or for wisdom and protection. During waxing moons do magic for increase of any kind or to draw something into your life.

On Mondays, the best hour to work is moonrise. Get this information from your local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac.

Witchery, Magick and Enchantment for Monday

Think for a moment on all of the witchery, magick and enchantments that you have discovered. Don’t be afraid to adjust spells to suit your own specific needs. Any gentle, illusory, and dreamy charms and spells can be enhanced when you work on the day of the week that is dedicated to the moon. Mondays are a fantastic day to boost your psychic abilities and to tune in to your intuition and empathy. It also gives you the opportunity to work with a different lunar phase each and every Monday, which means in one month you could work four different types of moon magicks on Mondays. How’s that for adding to your repertoire? You are going to have mad skills in no time at all.

So light up those lunar scented candles and add a little mystique to your outfit by wearing an enchanting lunar color. Wear your sparkling silver jewelry and maybe add a pair of dangling silver earrings or a pendant shaped like a crescent moon. Create lunar potions and philters; make a dream catcher and give it as a gift to someone you love. Burn some sandalwood or jasmine-scented incense today to inspire the glamour and magick of the moon. Slice up a favorite variety of fruit that is in season for a snack or share it with your love and enjoy his or her lunar and romantic qualities. Brew up a cup of chamomile tea, enchant it with a little moon magick, and relax and get a good night’s sleep.

Most importantly, get outside tonight and watch the moon for a while. What phase is she in? What color was the moon as she rose? Why not start a journal and write down at what location the moon rises and sets for a few seasons? This is a great way to teach you to tune in and to become more aware of the moon and the influence that she pulls into our lives. Try calling on Selene for her magickal assistance, and call Thoth for wisdom and strength. Get to know the Norse Mani and the Latvian Meness. These gods of the moon have plenty to teach, and if you allow their influence to cycle through your life, you’ll receive many blessings. Be imaginative, and create your own personal lunar magick and witchery. Go on….the moonlight becomes you.

The Witches Spell for Monday, August 28th – To Break the Powers of a Spell (against you)

Items that you will need in order to perform this spell:

1 large black candle
Cauldron or large black bowl

Ritual: Place the candle in the large black bowl or cauldron, affixing it with droppings ofanother black candle. The candle should be tall enough to extend a few inches above the rim.

Fill the cauldron to the rim with fresh water, without welling the candle’s wick. Deep breathe meditate, clear your mind and light the candle. Visualize the suspected spell’s power as residing within the candles flame. Sit in quiet contemplation of the candle and visualize the power flowing and growing within the candle’s flame. As the candle burns down, its flame will eventually sputter and go out as it contacts the water. As soon as the water has extinguished the flame, the spell will be dispersed. See the spell power explode into dust. Pour water in a hole in the ground and bury the candle.

This is the feast day of Volturnus, the Roman God of the river and change of seasons. The origin of the God is obscure, and most of this cult died out by the late republic. As a God of the seasons, he had his own priesthood and was regarded as the father of water (an important aspect of a bountiful harvest). Little is known of his origins other than he may have been equated with Eurus, the Greek God of the Southwest wind.

Your Gift to the World – Post Eclipse Energy Update

With the solar eclipse energies still rippling in our consciousness and indeed impacting the world in a profound way, it’s time to reassess where we stand and what’s ahead.

Most likely, you have noticed subtle or even major openings during this rare eclipse cycle. Some of you may simply feel more energy flowing, or a renewed enthusiasm for moving into new territories. For some, the eclipse impact is more of a knowing that life just got an upgrade of some kind. Another possibility is that you feel a new level of intensity and perhaps a distortion of time. Continue reading to better understand what these things mean and how you can fully utilize the blessings of this eclipse doorway of opportunity.

Post Eclipse Energy Update

Feedback I’ve had from people who work with me 1-1 or in global courses are sharing some astounding breakthroughs and welcome surprises unfolding during this gateway. In one case, the person said she finally got a green light on a project seemingly stalled for quite a while. In another case, the person shared how jubilant he has felt, a welcome experience after feeling discouraged or simply apathetic in recent times. Another person mentioned quitting her job and opening a business she’s wanted for a long time. Still others are commenting about how the energies are quite different, in a good way, even if they can’t quite define what changed.

When Time Isn’t Clock Time

An odd thing happened to me here this morning involving time. When I came into my office, I noticed that all of the battery operated clocks had stopped overnight. They stopped at different times, too, showing me 3 different times! While it’s not that unusual to have a battery operated clock stop when the battery needs replacing, the way this happened got my attention. So I inquired within to know what was going on – and here’s what I discovered.

The clocks stopping indicate that we as a collective have had a significant expansion that will allow us to increasingly embody more of our quantum selves. In quantum, we don’t operate on linear clock time. We connect with our timeless energy to create here in this physical world. Yes, we still have clocks, but we work with the minutes and hours in a much different way.

Most likely, you are already doing this – acknowledging your quantum nature and resourcing timelessness more than conventional people. In the Divine Changemakers Series I’ve offered since 2012, participants already are working with this concept in tangible and amazing ways.

What’s different now is that we have had an upgrade that will allow us to be even more in quantum. Time, already accelerated for all of us alive now, will become more fluid – allowing for enhanced potentials to create and manifest our highest purposes.

What This Means for You

Based on what I’m sharing here, consider that this eclipse doorway is the mega spiritual opening that you as a soul have been seeking and needing. I suggest taking some time over the coming days to still your mind and go within, contemplating the significance for you both short and longer term. You want to factor in both time frames, for an eclipse such as this will have ripple effects for months or even longer.

One way to tune in to the significance for you is to regularly contemplate the higher view of your soul’s incarnation. Consider your gifts and wisdom – known and outside your awareness – that you developed over countless lifetimes leading to now. These are relevant to this gateway and moving forward in the highest way.

Indeed, your gift to the world is to increasingly embody and offer your light and your wisdom. The world needs this now. How you express your light and wisdom will be unique to you. It’s not just about what you do for work or service either. It’s the totality of your active conscious presence in the world.

A part of you knows this to be true. You understand how important it is for you – as a divine changemaker – to fully embody the light and love that you are. Your inner wisdom can give you reminders and sign posts to help guide you in this next phase. Invite this help daily.  Consider that help, and what you can do with it, to be of prime importance to you as you move forward.

Express gratitude for who you are, beneath the veils of illusion, and for the privilege of being alive now for this unique lifetime.

Consider This

Consider this which I wrote on my Facebook page after the eclipse, tuning into what it means for you personally. Allow these words to give you a new inspiration for living your path of light:

“Just like an eclipse experienced one day or a cactus flower that blooms overnight and lasts only a day, you can have a quantum consciousness shift in one day that changes your entire life direction. Contemplate this today and anytime you begin to lose hope about your life. Time is not as it appears. Your life path is influenced by countless unseen factors and by your soul’s long journey that brought you to now.”

Give yourself permission to move beyond conditioned expectations that were based on a linear reality – to embody your quantum limitless self.

This Week’s Astrology: Seeing Things in a New Light

Your weekly Astrology highlights for August 28 – September 3, 2017

This week you’ll want to take a second look at a choice you made — but about what? Here’s what you need to know…

Thursday, August 31: Mercury enters Leo

Mercury is still retrograde as the week begins, but he’ll change costumes moving from Virgo into Leo for the rest of his retrograde. Until September 5, the remaining lessons around Mercury will focus more on re-evaluating the decisions you’ve made around a creative endeavor or in your love life.

Saturday, September 2: Mars trine Uranus

Mars will trine Uranus on Sunday, allowing the most innovative and exciting energy to burst forward. You might have a true awakening on this day and be able to successfully launch one of your most ingenious plans.

Sunday, September 3: Mercury conjunct Mars

On Sunday, Mercury — still retrograde — will connect to Mars (also in Leo). This could be a rough day where you communicate too passionately about something and become angry. Consider whether or not this anger is rooted in the fact that you’re still living with outmoded ideas or thoughts from the past. These thoughts are not going to take you to your future.

For the Week of Monday, Aug. 28

    • General

      General Horoscope

Mercury has been retrograde since August 12, but this week he’ll backtrack into Leo where he’ll remain retrograde until September 5. This suggests that for the final days of Mercury’s nap, you’ll be rehashing your thoughts connected to your love life. Avoid making a snap decision in either direction until Mercury has regulated his orbit. This is especially true on Sunday when Mercury crashes into Mars. You might say something to your lover that you really don’t mean.

    • Aries

      Aries Horoscope Mar 21 – Apr 19

Don’t be surprised if one of your ex-lovers comes out of the woodwork this week. The two of you might even find yourselves hooking up again. It’ll be easy to get lost in a passionate moment on Saturday, but by Sunday, you may end up regretting anything you said or did together. Remember, just because an ex comes back into your life it doesn’t mean you should give him or her a second chance. Exercise prudence and avoid reckless actions or words you might later regret.

    • Taurus

      Taurus Horoscope Apr 20 – May 20

Mercury backs out of your romance sector and into your home and family sector this week. This might clear up any confusion you have been feeling about your love life. Unfortunately, your family may now be scratching their heads wondering what you’re doing. They may not approve of your current decisions with someone you are dating or have dated in the past. Or, they might simply be confused about the sudden change of heart.

    • Gemini

      Gemini Horoscope May 21 – Jun 20

You might be second-guessing your recent romantic decisions. This Thursday, Mercury slides back into your communication sector and into Leo, the sign of romance. As a result, you might either become consumed with thinking about the past and past loves, or you might feel a greater sense of confusion about the current state of your love life. Try not to make any major moves this week. Mercury turns direct on September 5. After that, clarity will return.

    • Cancer

      Cancer Horoscope Jun 21 – Jul 22

The Moon will move through your partnership sector on Thursday and until Saturday afternoon. As a result, you’ll likely feel a stronger emotional connection with your mate on these days. Be sure to carve out time to be alone with each other in order to take advantage of this special opportunity to bond. You might even work through a disagreement the two of you had in the past about finances. Perfect!

    • Leo

      Leo Horoscope Jul 23 – Aug 22

You might not communicate as effectively to your mate this week as you’d like to. On Thursday, Mercury retrogrades into your sign where he’ll remain out of phase until September 5. During these days, you might even become angry about your partner misunderstanding your words because you’ll be convinced that you’re coming across with total clarity. Don’t let this become a major argument. Recognize that everything will settle down in a few more days.

    • Virgo

      Virgo Horoscope Aug 23 – Sep 22

If you have any unresolved romantic hang-ups from your past holding you back from experiencing a new and even more gratifying relationship, this is the week to pay attention to them. Consider going into therapy and working through these issues — even if it requires you to recall some uncomfortable experiences. Getting to a place of healing and closure is not only possible now, it’s necessary. You deserve to love and be loved without reservation.

    • Libra

      Libra Horoscope Sep 23 – Oct 22

You and your sweetheart might enjoy reconnecting with old friends this week. Another possibility is that the two of you had a mutual goal, and for whatever reason, put it on a shelf with the intention of getting to it “one of these days.” This week, you might have a conversation with one another and realize there’s no better time than the present. Go after this dream together and know that the outcome will be spectacular.

    • Scorpio

      Scorpio Horoscope Oct 23 – Nov 21

You might begin to second-guess your career direction or recent decisions concerning your professional life. If this happens, consider talking to your partner and asking for his or her perspective. There’s a good chance you’re not seeing the situation clearly and that you’re limiting yourself and your potential as a result. Alternatively, if you’re in a situation where you feel your relationship has held you back from pursuing success, this will be a good week to begin changing that script.

    • Sagittarius

      Sagittarius Horoscope Nov 22 – Dec 21

You and your lover might plan to revisit another part of the world you once traveled to together. If so, you can look forward to a wonderfully passionate and romantic adventure. Another possibility is that you will run into an ex-lover as you are pursuing an activity designed to help you grow spiritually. This can be anything from a religious service to a metaphysical workshop. Seeing your old flame in this capacity might inspire you to give him or her a second chance.

    • Capricorn

      Capricorn Horoscope Dec 22 – Jan 19

You and your partner might spend time this week re-evaluating a few financial decisions you made together in the past. There might not be anything negative about these decisions. In fact, you might have profited from them. The point of your discussions, however, is to consider whether or not the actions you took in the past are meant to be continued — or if it’s time for a different path. After September 5, you’ll know which direction to move in.

    • Aquarius

      Aquarius Horoscope Jan 20 – Feb 18

This week Mercury will retrograde into your partnership sector where it remains out of phase until September 5. During these days, it’s possible that you and your mate will feel as if communication has become more confusing — or even volatile. On the flip side, you might have an opportunity to revisit a conversation you had in the past that was left open-ended. You’ll work together to resolve this. Ultimately, it will strengthen your bond.

  • Pisces

    Pisces Horoscope Feb 19 – Mar 20

You and your partner might decide it’s time to re-evaluate the division of labor in your relationship. If one of you feels that he or she is carrying most of the weight and doing the majority of the dirty work, it might be time for a change. This will be a good week to literally compile a list of the daily and weekly chores you both have to do in order to run your household and relationship. If the tasks are skewed to one person, adjust accordingly.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Monday, August 28th

Aries

Aries
Aries

Today’s energies are good for getting to the bottom of a matter, dear Aries, particularly related to your work or health. However, it’s all too easy to take this a little too far with the energies active today. Try to pull yourself out of research if it’s seriously infringing on your time, as it can be addictive right now! Details can consume you if you let this happen. It can be easier to pull yourself out of compulsive thinking or activities as the day advances. The Moon’s move into fellow Fire sign, Sagittarius, helps pull you out of this kind of mental circling. You’re seeking out greener pastures tonight, and you’re likely to find them, at least on a spiritual plane. Your sense of humor returns full force.

Taurus

Taurus
Taurus

You’re likely to find yourself especially relationship-focused today, dear Taurus, but things can feel a little heavy at times in the first half of the day, largely because the focus is on what’s not working rather than what’s running smoothly. We can be a little suspicious or mistrustful today, and while this can lead to some useful forms of research or investigation, you should try to catch yourself from going beyond the point of skepticism and into trickier territory. People may be bringing up things you’d prefer to forget. You feel far more comfortable with others and with yourself later today. Letting go of frustrating situations comes more naturally now.

Gemini

Gemini
Gemini

The first half of the day can find you pushing an issue too far, dear Gemini, or spending too much time on inconsequential matters that bring you down. This is the nature of a Mercury-Pluto aspect that’s active today and that comes at a time when you’re overly focused on flaws and little problems, anyhow. This effectively doubles up the tense energy. What you’d be wise to do is channel some of this tension into something productive, but do watch for impatience botching up a good thing! Later today, you’re able to unwind after making the decision to stop overthinking things. The Moon moves into your partnership sector, turning your attention to your relationships, social life, and companionship.

Cancer

Cancer
Cancer

There is more intensity in your recreational or leisure time today, dear Cancer, or you’re taking things so seriously that you have a hard time unwinding and enjoying worry-free activities. A Mercury-Pluto influence active today suggests that your mind or conversations can take a negative turn a little too quickly. While some skepticism is healthy, going too far with this can hijack your day. Avoid putting too much time into resolving a problem that isn’t significant enough to warrant the effort. The Moon moves into your work and health sector later today, and while this isn’t the most glamorous transit of the month, it’s good for getting a strong sense of your practical priorities.

Leo

Leo
Leo

The tendency in the first half of the day is to focus on niggly problems and obsess over them, dear Leo. These are likely to relate to money or work matters. A perfectionistic streak can be useful if it drives you to handle an issue that’s been bothering you only up to a point, after which you’re wasting time, and perhaps more importantly, energy or spirit. Try your best to see when to call it quits. Later today, the Moon moves into fiery Sagittarius and in harmony with your own fiery sign. This transit is helpful for gaining perspective and smoothing things over. Creatively speaking, you’re in great form, and your personal appeal is excellent.

Virgo

Virgo
Virgo

There can be misunderstandings to deal with or concerns weighing heavily on your mind in the first half of the day, dear Virgo. You have a real tendency to hone in on the details that aren’t entirely right, and that can be a great thing if you work patiently on fixing things. However, this can go a little too far, and you can end up putting far too much time and energy into something that has very little significance to you in the long run, so watch for this. You’re inclined to keep busy now, but you can get tense too easily, and that’s why the easier energy of the second half of the day comes as a relief. While it can take you a little longer to turn your overthinking off, once you do, you can really enjoy some down time tonight.

Libra

Libra
Libra

Today, something doesn’t quite measure up as you had hoped, particularly when it comes to material goods or comfort items, dear Libra. You could find yourself obsessing over a small detail but be careful that you don’t let this hijack your day, robbing you of time and energy that could be put to better use elsewhere. You get help for this later today when we pass by the Mercury-Pluto influence that has us fixating on figuring something out and then the Moon moves into harmony with your sign, helping to smooth over problem areas. You’re now drawn to things that make you happy and to information that soothes or delights you. Your curiosity is big right now, and you can find friends or networks supportive.

Scorpio

Scorpio
Scorpio

The Moon in your sign pulls up all sorts of colorful feelings, dear Scorpio, although a Mercury-Pluto challenge can have the effect of adding a negative or suspicious filter to your thoughts and this can be a small stumbling block today. With this influence, be careful that you don’t stand in your own way with what you think and communicate. Also, make an effort to call it quits if a small detail is taking over your thoughts. Once over this hump, you’ll have a far easier time enjoying the good vibes of the day. The Moon moves into your stable second house, and you’re inclined to want to wind down rather than rev yourself up. This comes as a relief – it’s time for some well-earned rest.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius
Sagittarius

The first half of the day can find you reflective, dear Sagittarius, and while this is good for you to a certain point, you’re inclined to overthink things today with a Mercury-Pluto influence in play. Try not to pour too much energy and time into investigating a small problem that doesn’t have much impact on your life. If you know when to call it quits, then all the better. Decisions about money are inclined to be emotionally-driven today, so hold off on them if possible, and be a little more cautious than usual when communicating in professional or public settings. The Moon moves into your sign later today, and this can serve to uncork and enliven your emotions. It can also act as a personal “reset” button as you begin a new lunar cycle. Make it a good one!

Capricorn

Capricorn
Capricorn

A Mercury-Pluto aspect influencing the first half of the day can have you second-guessing things, dear Capricorn, and perhaps people, as well! A suspicious frame of mind, however, is not likely to serve you well today. If you can, turn your investigations to things that could actually benefit from some research rather than put too much energy into worry, concern, or negative thinking. Watch also today for some misunderstandings surrounding education, learning, communications, and transportation. As the day advances, though, you struggle less and less with getting your thoughts under control, and once over that hump, you’re in a fabulous position to kick back and enjoy yourself. The Moon’s move into Sagittarius feels carefree for today, and into your privacy sector suggests some needed downtime.

Aquarius

Aquarius
Aquarius

There is a real tendency to hone in on what’s not working in your life, dear Aquarius, or to obsess over a small detail that’s out of line this morning. However, you may end up spending too much time frustrated and strung out about things that don’t truly matter in the long run. Try to nip this in the bud as soon as possible as it’s perhaps the biggest obstacle in front of you today. Opportunities today tend to lie in research and analysis. Avoid psychoanalyzing those close to you, though, as there can be touchiness now. You can pull yourself out of a mental rut very quickly later today. For one, you’re putting a Mercury-Pluto challenge behind you, and for another, the Moon’s move into your social sector eases the pressure you’ve had to perform and allows you to unwind. Good company and humor is the solution tonight.

Pisces

PIsces
Pisces

Today, there can be moments when you could be feeling as if you are walking on eggshells around certain people, dear Pisces, and you probably are! Keep things light and positive, if possible, but if someone wants to address the deeper issues, you may not be able to avoid it. It’s not that going deep is the wrong thing now, but that timing is off and a Mercury-Pluto aspect active today tends to cast everything in an ominous, exaggerated, or negative light. Communications don’t thrive this way. So, the advice today is not to avoid the underlying problem but to delay hashing things out for a better, more accepting and productive time. Later today, you find it easier to get out of a mental funk and enjoy yourself, especially by focusing on positive work developments and the setting of goals.

If You Were Born Today, August 28

You are emotionally impulsive, playful, youthful, and charming with a wonderful sense of humor. Your need to express yourself on a creative level is strong, and it motivates much of what you do. Success is more likely if your career allows you to express your creativity freely. Your perceptive, warm, and insightful qualities are major elements of your charisma, attracting others to you spontaneously. Some level of mischief is another quality that plays a role in your attractiveness. You are excellent at negotiating and you can be very diplomatic, although when unhappy, you are inclined to call the shots. As creative and spontaneous as you can be, your need for routine is also strongly present. You are a natural teacher, counselor, and healer. Love, compassion, and understanding are qualities that you always promote.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Tuesday, August 29

Aries

Aries
Aries

You tend to have a finger in many pies right now, dear Aries. The day is likely to be busy and happy for the most part, but there is some tendency to overdo a good thing. While you’re craving a break from the routine today as the Moon encourages you to explore and discover rather than produce, you could be dealing with a rather competitive person on the job or a frustrating situation with a partner. Physical sensitivity to excesses may be an issue to contend with as well. However, as divided as you may be feeling about work and play, this is a fine time to think up new ideas and possibilities. As the Moon in your adventure sector picks up better aspects, you are more inclined to let bygones be bygones as you focus your attention on bigger and better things. The trick is to avoid shooting so high that you give up too quickly.

Taurus

Taurus
Taurus

The Moon and the Sun clash today, and so do the Sun and Jupiter in a minor way, dear Taurus, which can point to some feelings of being divided between two strong urges. Restlessness can take over at times today, and work or scheduled activities can be demanding at times. There is a tendency to either overdo and push too hard, or to avoid responsibilities altogether, and neither situation is going to leave you feeling satisfied! If you’re not feeling up to par or your mood is up and down, it’s likely to do with immoderate activity or indecision. Frustrations require a positive channel for release, and possibly a creative one with the Sun in your expressive fifth house — seek one out and go all in for best results.

Gemini

Gemini
Gemini

A Sun-Moon square can have you caught between two strong needs, dear Gemini, and a Sun-Jupiter challenge suggests something quite similar. The need for peace and quiet seems to clash with a sudden and increased desire for companionship, but perhaps you can fill both needs. There can be competitive or frustrating elements with a lover or child or related to a creative project, and it can be difficult to unwind. Certainly with the Sun now in your home and family sector you have a stronger urge and need for relaxation and some form of retreat from chaotic or demanding settings. Restlessness may lead to risk-taking or excessiveness, but neither of these matches with your overriding need for rest and familiarity, so think twice today!

Cancer

Cancer
Cancer

With the Sun in your close communications sector now, dear Cancer, this is a time for diversifying, learning, and seeking out new information, as well as for sharing your personal viewpoint. Today, the Moon and  Jupiter challenge the Sun, which can lead to some initial aggravations until you work something out. Personal projects that seem outdated or slow to advance can frustrate you, or family and home life irritations can feel a little overwhelming. You can feel behind but not quite ready to apply yourself to get back on track. Self-discipline is hard to access at the moment! There can be work to handle that limits your time spent feeling out new ideas and learning. Take it easy and look for creative solutions. Try to divide your time well and draw upon patience.

Leo

Leo
Leo

The Moon in your expressive fifth house today attempts to pull you out of your shell, dear Leo, and perhaps your comfort zone, which is an apt expression considering the Sun is currently transiting your comfortable second house! Jupiter also challenges the Sun today, goading you to get going on a project or encouraging you to explore various options and ideas. Expanding your interests can be in focus now. You can experience some impatience today as you imagine everything that could be and compare it to what isn’t the case. However, consider that mental and physical energies are mismatched for the time being. Avoid hasty decisions. Your attention span may be short, so aim to avoid taking on too much. The sooner you seek out balance, the sooner you can enjoy your day!

Virgo

Virgo
Virgo

The Moon transits your home and family sector all day, and the need for time to relax and wind down comes on, dear Virgo, although this conflicts with your drive for more activity and exploration that’s been strong since the Sun has been in your sign. While you should do your best to avoid extra strain, try to take care of your diverse needs so that you don’t neglect something altogether. It’s also important to avoid impatience and the general tendency to overdo or overreach. For you, overspending can be part of the picture. Certain issues or desires can feel pressing or urgent when in fact you would be better off waiting things out. Whims that come on suddenly are probably not reflective of your true needs today, anyhow.

Libra

Libra
Libra

The urge to connect with others can take over today, dear Libra, but with the Sun in your privacy sector, your need to tuck yourself away is equally compelling. You can be filled with ideas, but it can be difficult deciding on something to focus on with so many conflicting feelings and a bit of a chaotic atmosphere around you today. You can be feeling rather restless and perhaps pressured to accomplish something. If you are not actively pursuing an interest today, you can be a little moody. Others might stimulate a competitive urge in you. Seek out creative outlets for excess energy, and try to take part in an activity that allows you to take the initiative, but absolutely take it easy since you do need extra time to rest these days.

Scorpio

Scorpio
Scorpio

The day can pull up inner conflicts, dear Scorpio, mostly related to whether to stick with what you know or go out on a limb. The Moon in the sign after yours all day points to less urgency and more patience available to you, generally speaking. However, it competes with your need for collaboration and your social urges today. As such, there can be fluctuating energy levels and moods experienced now, and you may have a hard time expressing yourself freely. Pushing yourself too hard doesn’t get you further faster, and might even put you in a worse position (haste makes waste today). However, things are likely to smooth out if you resolve to let go of the need to compete or to push in order to grow. Be gentle with yourself and your activities and projects for best results now.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius
Sagittarius

The Moon spends the day in your sign, dear Sagittarius, and this brings you out of your shell and ready to connect with others, but also a little impatient. This tendency is particularly strong with Jupiter in conflict with the Sun and a First Quarter Moon occurring today. You’re currently in a cycle that puts goals and ambitions above most other things in your life, but today, personal and social needs vie for your attention — and so does your desire for more freedom and room to explore and experiment. There may be excessive demands or the crossing of boundaries at the heart of tensions for some of you, but for others, this is an internal conflict that is resolved once you find a way to satisfy both needs. If you are feeling unusually restless, try to direct excess or frustrated energy into a more creative field.

Capricorn

Capricorn
Capricorn

With the Moon in the sign behind yours all day, dear Capricorn, you have a high need for the kind of emotional refreshment that comes through time alone for reflection. Even so, this need conflicts with the theme of exploration and experimentation that’s with you these days and you may wrestle with whether to stick with what you know or push out of your comfort zone. There may be competitive elements in your dealings with authority figures, bosses, or parents today that compound the problem, or there could be some tensions revolving around a business project or vision that you want to move faster than it’s currently progressing, but that requires more patience. It would be a good idea to recognize the need to make changes, but it’s also important to have a strong sense of what you can and cannot do.

Aquarius

Aquarius
Aquarius

A focus on networking and friends comes into play today, dear Aquarius, but this can feel at odds with your need for more intimacy or more in-depth exploration of a topic. As well, your mind can be especially restless, and there can be aggravations related to differing viewpoints, transportation problems, or frustrated travel or educational plans. Keep in mind, however, that any problems cropping up today are likely to be quickly resolved if you focus on moderating your expectations and actions. Pressures to grow or improve can be real, but you can’t do everything in one day. Try not to rush to a conclusion. Aim to relax enough to absorb, learn, and share ideas for making improvements — an approach that is far more preferable to pushing something ahead too quickly.

Pisces

PIsces
Pisces

Tensions today tend to stem from feeling pressured to move forward too quickly, dear Pisces. As well, there can be a bit of a struggle with wanting to take care of business and go your own way or socialize and collaborate with someone close to you. The Moon spends the day in your solar tenth house, and this serves to sensitize you to others’ evaluations of you — whether or not they’re recognizing your achievements and contributions. There could be a disagreement revolving around money or the sharing of power, or if there have been complicated and imbalanced power dynamics in a relationship, this can come to a head. As much as possible, avoid rushing and aim to take things easy. Otherwise, you may end up only scattering your energies and accomplishing little at the end of it!

You might take a rather carefree or slapdash approach to the first part of the day, dear Capricorn, but by mid-afternoon, you may crave a little more order and structure.

Tarot Card of the Day

The Devil

August 28th, 2017

The Devil Tarot card expresses the realm of the taboo — the culturally rejected wildness and undigested shadow side that each of us carries in our subconscious. This shadow is actually at the core of our being, which we cannot get rid of and will never succeed in taming. From its earliest versions, which portrayed a vampire-demon, The Devil evoked the church-fueled fear that a person could “lose their soul” to wild and passionate forces.

The Devil image which emerged in the mid-1700s gives us a more sophisticated rendition — that of the “scapegoated goddess,” whose esoteric name is Baphomet. Volcanic reserves of passion and primal desire empower her efforts to overcome the pressure of stereotyped roles and experience true freedom of soul.

Keywords: judgment, resurrection, healing, music, good news, revelation!

Astrological Correspondence: Pluto

The Judgment card represents the judgment day or a call to awakening heralding a rite of passage. As one cycle comes to an end, we need to prepare for a new stage in our development – the future is waiting. Now is the time when past efforts yield positive results, when we can reap the rewards, when we realize that we are drawn in a new direction and recognize our true calling. In its positive meaning, the Judgment card reminds us that through honesty and true reflection we can realize where we have erred on our path. As a result, we need to forgive ourselves to regain a feeling of self-worth and accomplishment. Placed in a negative context, Judgment symbolizes indecision, a fear of letting go, remorse, regret, imbalance, and imprisonment.

The Magus

The Magus is the physical embodiment of decisive action based upon knowledge and aimed squarely at specific goals. Thoroughly Yang by nature and firmly set in the material world, he none-the-less has a powerful spiritual connection as well. His knowledge, wisdom and skill are all encompassing. He is complete. His power as a creator is unmatched on our earthly plane. He is self-aware and unafraid to act. His enormous strength gives him the freedom to act as he chooses. However, responsibility comes with that freedom. Because he is not bound to the restraints of others he must choose how to act. The question that always lies before him is should he act morally, or forsake ethics for personal gain.

As a daily card, The Magus suggest you currently possess a tremendous power and freedom to move your life in any direction you choose. In short, you can make things happen. Your true challenge at the moment is to move forward without trampling the dreams of others. Fortunately your moral fiber is strong as well, and will guide you down the right path.

Earth Sky News for Monday, August 28th:  Star of the week: Deneb

Deneb is one of the most distant stars you will see with your eye alone. That’s because it’s one of the most luminous stars in the Milky Way galaxy.

Deneb is one of the most distant stars you will see with your eye alone. That’s because it’s one of the most luminous stars in the Milky Way galaxy. The exact distance to Deneb is unclear, with estimates ranging from about 1,425 light-years to perhaps as much as 7,000 light-years. Whatever its exact distance, when you gaze at Deneb, know that you are gazing across thousands of light-years of space.

The best estimates for Deneb’s distance likely are those obtained by the Hipparcos Space Astrometry Mission in the 1990s. A simple calculation from initial Hipparcos data gives the figure of 3,230 light-years, whereas the refined data yield just over 1,400 light-years. At any of these estimates distances, Deneb is one of the farthest stars the unaided human eye can see. It is so far, that the light that reaches the Earth today started on its journey well more than 1,000 years ago.

In order for us to see it at its enormous distance, Deneb must also be tremendously bright and energetic. Among the 20 brightest stars, only Rigel in Orion surpasses Deneb in intrinsic brightness. Deneb is an A2Ia star, which says that it is white hot (A2) and a supergiant star (Ia). Prof. James Kaler, using the figure of 2,600 light years as the distance, estimated a diameter 200 times greater than our sun, and about a quarter of a million times brighter in visible light. Considering its spectral classification (A2), Deneb must have a surface temperature between about 8500 to 9000 kelvins (roughly 14,800 to 15,700 degrees F).

Deneb is not the biggest star in the Milky Way. Betelgeuse and Antares, among others, are larger. But Deneb may well be the most energetic (based on the amount of electromagnetic radiation it produces) of the A-type stars. The famed North American nebula, a large cloud of glowing gas in the shape of the continent, likely is glowing in a process similar to fluorescence, energized by the radiation of Deneb.

Stellar luminosity: The true brightnesses of stars

How to see it

White Deneb is the 20th brightest star in the sky. It is one of the most remote stars visible to the eye alone. You can gaze at this faraway star starting in late spring, when Deneb rises over the northeastern horizon by mid-evening. A month later, Deneb is already in the sky by the time it gets dark. In standard time, the midnight culmination date is about August 1. Using Daylight Time, the midnight culmination is about August 15. The word ‘culmination’ indicates the star’s highest point in the sky.

Deneb is part of several famous star patterns, which overlap each other. It’s the brightest of the stars composing the constellation Cygnus the Swan, where it marks the Swan’s Tail. When you hear ‘deneb’ in a star name, it always means ‘tail.’ Simultaneously, Deneb marks the head of an asterism (a readily recognizable grouping of stars that is not an official constellation), known as the Northern Cross. Plus it is one of the three stars known as the Summer Triangle. The other two stars are Vega and Altair. Deneb is the northernmost and dimmest of the three Triangle stars, but its association with the other bright stars makes it easy to identify.

Deneb is circumpolar as seen from locations of about 45 degrees north latitude, roughly the northern tier of US states. In other words, from the northern U.S. and similar latitudes, Deneb never sets but instead circles round and round the pole star. It cannot ever be seen south of about 45 degrees south latitude. That includes Antarctica, far southern Argentina and Chile, and perhaps the far southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. Aside from that, just about anyone should have a chance to see Deneb at one time or another.

History and Myth

The name Deneb derives from the Arabic Al Dhanab al Dajajah meaning Tail of the Hen. It obviously dates from an earlier incarnation of Cygnus not as a swan but as a chicken. Like many bright stars, Deneb has been called by a number of other names, but the oddest, according the Richard Hinckley Allen, who cites the Arabic name above, was Uropygium, meaning the posterior part of a bird’s body from which feathers grow, and oddly sometimes called the “Pope’s nose.”

The constellation Cygnus the Swan. The bright star Deneb represents the Tail of Cygnus. Image via Constellation of Words

In Chinese mythology Deneb is associated with the story of the Celestial Princess or the Weaver Girl. In this story a Girl (the star Vega) is separated from her beloved (a cowherd represented by the star Altair) by the Milky Way. Once a year, the girl and the cowherd are allowed to meet briefly when a large flock of magpies form a bridge across the starry river. Deneb represents the bridge.

Deneb’s position is RA: 20h 41m 26s, dec: +45° 16′ 49″.

Bottom line: Information on the star Deneb, plus how to see it in your sky.

Discovering Life Balance Through the Wheel of the Year

By Lisa A. Michaels

“One of the most potent inner transformations came as I began decorating my tree for Winter Solstice with a magical theme, instead of modeling it after the décor matching trees of my youth. I brought in a living evergreen tree, which I would later plant in my yard, as a symbol of the everlasting nature of the Goddess…”

My personal journey with the Wheel of the Year began in 1988, with my soul’s first deep longing cry for the voice of the Divine Feminine. That August I had just moved from Los Angeles back to the land of rain, trees, and family on the outskirts of Atlanta where I grew up. All of my early childhood church study and later metaphysical training up to that point had only a Divine Masculine voice, and I ached for the balance that could only be found when the richness of the feminine was included.

As I searched for the Goddess, I grew frustrated with celebrating religious holidays that I no longer connected with. Books began to cross my path that spoke of the Wheel of the Year and I began working with those magical times. Eventually, a friend and I gathered a group of women together and we created a ceremony for each of the Wheel points: Winter Solstice, Imbolc, Spring Equinox, Beltane, Summer Solstice, Lughnasad, Autumnal Equinox, and Samhain. Honoring the wheel in this way for the first time actively opened me to a greater connection with nature and deeply anchored the wheel in my psyche, enlivening it in my life. I began understanding the fluidity of holding a circular/wheel understanding of time rather than a strictly linear one, and the more I worked with the Wheel, the more those revelations continued to show themselves to me.

One of the most potent inner transformations came as I began decorating my tree for Winter Solstice with a magical theme, instead of modeling it after the décor matching trees of my youth. I brought in a living evergreen tree, which I would later plant in my yard, as a symbol of the everlasting nature of the Goddess. I then connected each aspect of decorating my tree to what I wanted to create in the growing year. I hung gold balls to represent the sun, long strands of silver tinsel to represent rain, and pine cones and nuts to symbolize fertility in all my endeavors. I created ornaments with words such as love, creativity, and happiness and I tied little sparkly bundles of money to the branches. My tree became a place of gratitude for the blessings found in my life both at that moment and for the year ahead.

My magic tree helped me to integrate my family of origin’s celebration of Christmas into a time of year that we all could celebrate with more authenticity. I started honoring the entire period from Winter Solstice through Christmas. I hosted a ceremony for Winter Solstice and then enjoyed some of the traditions of Christmas with my family. A few years later, I began holding Wheel of the Year ceremonies and celebrations in my community. The first year, six people attended Winter Solstice. Now, 15 years later, this ceremony averages well over a hundred attendees.

In the years that followed, on Imbolc, the cross quarter day between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, a group of friends and I conducted a networking ceremony. At this seasonal time we traditionally chose additional ‘seeds’ we wanted to plant in our lives for the growing season, and we applied that to our professional lives. In our ceremony, each of us spoke about our professions and shared business cards, with the intention of sowing a more abundant work season through networking for the upcoming growing cycle.

One of the most memorable Spring Equinox celebrations I co-created and participated in happened with my first women’s group. We focused our ceremony on honoring our child within. We brought pictures of ourselves as children, made a bunny cake, ate candy, blew bubbles, sang children’s songs, and laughed all evening. The upliftment we generated from that ceremony lasted for weeks.

In a large Summer Solstice celebration one year, I created a ceremony around abundance to honor one of the primary teachings of that season. One of the key elements I included in the ceremony was a fun dance called an “a-bun-dance” to call abundance into our lives. We danced all night, activating abundance, and came away revitalized.

The Wheel gradually took deep root in my life, and as I worked with it personally I also began facilitating it in workshops. Then a couple of years ago, when I was doing research for another subject, I made a key discovery. I found out that in ancient China, people interested in observing nature placed a pole approximately 8-feet tall in the ground and measured the amount of shadow and light created by the sun over the course of a year. The resulting pattern from these measurements became one of their most sacred symbols – the yin/yang. The sun actually creates the symbol in shadow and light over the course of a year. While I knew the patterns of light and dark changed, I had never seen it as so balanced. You can see on the symbol the movement of the sun as its most extreme dark time in the Northern Hemisphere, Winter Solstice, brings forth the light cycle and as the most extreme light time, Summer Solstice, subtly gives birth to the dark part of the cycle once again. Also, the yin/yang shows the two places where the light and the dark fall into complete balance when the equinoxes occur.

Understanding where this powerful symbol of balance came from assisted me in more deeply understanding the Wheel of the Year and how energies flow throughout the life cycle as well. The cycle of the Wheel and the cycle of life take the same journey– starting with the dark, fallow time in winter as the earth rests and rejuvenates, moving to the gradual warming of the soil with the light of the sun until it heats enough for planting in the spring, then moving into the full brightness of light during the summer growing time. Then, the light gradually recedes to the fall harvest, and finally diminishes until the crops die and the earth settles in for its period of dark winter rejuvenation once again. For most of us, the cycle of life follows this same pattern as we gestate in the womb’s darkness, are born and grow from childhood into adulthood and then into our elder years, moving on to our death and our next expression.

The energy of the great wheel has shown me that too much light and outer world activity leaves little time for rest or quiet and burns out my system. A busy external life requires balance found during the darkness, the peaceful rest times. That quiet inner time creates the place where I am receptive to inner voice of Spirit, and where the seeds of my desires are planted, developed, and grown. Working with the Wheel, l have learned to appreciate the light and bright times of life that bring me into the outer world for growth, joy, and creativity, as well as those times that take me deep into my inner darkness for rejuvenation, and physical and emotional healing. I’ve connected to my to my own yin and yang cycles, my inner balance and wholeness.

The light balances itself fully over the course of a year, with time for outer world growing activity, harvest energy, and then time for deep reflection. As Earth’s seasons turn and change, I learned from nature that my life follows this same rhythm of constant transformation. Sometimes the shift from one thing to another expresses in a subtle and gradual change and sometimes it is quick and impactful. Yet the undercurrent of motion keeps the energy turning.

Explanation: As the Moon’s shadow swept across the US on August 21, eclipse chasers in the narrow path of totality were treated to a diamond ring in the sky. At the beginning and end of totality, the fleeting and beautiful effect often produces audible gasps from an amazed audience. It occurs just before or after the appearance of the faint solar corona with a brief ring of light and glimpse of Sun. In this scene from the end of totality at Central, South Carolina, clouds drift near the Sun’s diamond ring in the sky.

Earth Sky News for August 25th: A really big asteroid is about to pass Earth

A really big asteroid is about to pass Earth

Named for Florence Nightingale, asteroid 3122 Florence is the biggest near-Earth object to pass this close since this category of objects was discovered over a century ago! It might be visible in binoculars.

The next attraction coming up in our skies might be an asteroid big enough to be seen in small telescopes, and maybe even in binoculars, as a small, very slow-moving “star.” Asteroid 1981 ET3 – also known as 3122 Florence – is a huge space rock at least 2.7 miles (4.35 km) in diameter. According to Paul Chodas at the Center for Near Earth Object Studies:

Florence is the largest asteroid to pass this close to our planet since the first near-Earth asteroid was discovered over a century ago.

Asteroid 3122 Florence will safely pass by our planet on September 1, 2017 at over 18 times the Earth-moon distance. The asteroid will not be visible to the unaided eye. It will, however, become visible in small amateur telescopes by late August, in the course of what will become the closest encounter to Earth by this asteroid since 1890.

It won’t come this close again until after the year 2500.

The Virtual Telescope Project will offer a live stream of the asteroid pass on August 31, 2017, beginning at 19:30 UTC; translate to your time zone.

Among the near-Earth asteroids classified as Potentially Hazardous, Florence is one of the biggest. Bigger asteroids include 1999 JM8 (4.3 miles or 7 km), 4183 Cuno (3.5 miles or 5.6 km) and 3200 Phaeton (3.2 miles or 5.1 km), which is thought to be the parent body of the Geminid meteor shower.

Of these, however, Florence is brightest, making it an excellent target for possible glimpses via small telescopes and binoculars.

Its size of about half the elevation of Mount Everest should allow it to reach a visual magnitude of +8.75 to +9, making it a relatively easy target for experienced observers at sites with dark skies.

Astronomers will study the flyby of the huge asteroid. Radar observations are scheduled from NASA’s Goldstone Radar between August 29 to September 8, 2017. The Arecibo Observatory will also analyze Florence from September 2 – 5, 2017. Paul Chodas of the Center of NEO Studies said:

The September 1 flyby of Florence will provide astronomers with an excellent opportunity to make detailed measurements of a large near-Earth asteroid. In particular, radar scientists expect to obtain high-resolution images of Florence that could reveal surface features as small as about 10 meters (30 feet).

The asteroid rotates in about 2.5 hours and radar observations may reveal if Florence is a close or contact binary, or even if the space rock has its own small orbiting “moon.”

Closest approach to Earth is expected to occur at about 8:06 am EDT on September 1, 2017, but backyard observers using a telescope can try to get a glimpse of the space rock a few nights before that date.

On the night of August 27, the asteroid is in the constellation of Piscis Austrinus reaching about 19º above the southern horizon as seen from central U.S. Late in the night of August 29, the space rock gets into Capricornus and reaches an elevation of 33º as seen from Kansas.

Its distance will make it difficult to detect its slow motion across the stars, unless you are using at least a 5″ diameter or bigger telescope and observe in the right direction.

Although asteroid Florence is travelling at 30,266 miles per hour (48,708 km/h), the distance will make it appear so slow that observers should keep watching the fairly bright asteroid for about 5 to 10 minutes to detect its movement across the stars.

Florence was discovered on March 2, 1981 from the Siding Spring Observatory in Australia. It is named in honor of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the founder of modern nursing.

Bottom line: Asteroid 3122 Florence will safely pass by our planet on September 1, 2017 at over 18 times the Earth-moon distance. It’s the largest asteroid to pass this close to our planet since the first near-Earth asteroid was discovered over a century ago and might be visible to observers at dark sites using small telescopes, and even binoculars.
