Goddess Bless The People of Texas

Tis Just a Second Blessed

Just a twinkle of eye;
eyes meet in unison of thought;
mirrors of passion flood forth;

The time holds not them;
graced by perfection’s touch;
matched together in mere glimpse;

casual is the moment;
no pressure, no rush of action;
gentle is their pace, marked in heartbeats;

escaping the grasp of locked eyes;
they converse of beliefs, strong in faith
a gentle caress of kind, past is replaced anew;

A new ground broken, new passions explored;
all things to be explored; together;
hands clasp between them they walk, bold;

the road ahead filled with obstacles;
time’s test looming about them, over them, near;
confident is their gait, faith their stay, strong;

A third figure is there, with them, between them;
holding them together, between them, around them;
shining through the eyes of them, a space filled;
an urge replaced in fulfillment, a establishment of truth;

all things seem strange to behold, but sure is the ground;
things, puzzles fall into place, visions beckon forth to pass;
only hope and faith hold the fabric of this together;
this plan placed between them, and becoming of them, intertwined;

This is the way of things.. all this too shall come to pass;

The Sky This Week for August 28 to September 3

The Aurigid meteor shower, Asteroid 3122 Florence, and other cool things to look for in the sky this week.
By Richard Talcott

Monday, August 28

Distant Neptune reaches opposition and peak visibility a week from tonight, but the view now is essentially the same. The ice giant planet rises during evening twilight and climbs nearly halfway to the zenith in the southern sky by 1:30 a.m. local daylight time. The magnitude 7.8 planet lies in Aquarius, 1.3° east of 4th-magnitude Lambda (l) Aquarii. You’ll need binoculars to spy Neptune and a telescope to see its blue-gray disk, which spans 2.4″.

Tuesday, August 29

First Quarter Moon arrives at 4:13 a.m. EDT. Our satellite won’t rise until after 2 p.m. local daylight time, however, so observers in the Americas won’t see it precisely half-lit. As darkness falls this evening, the Moon appears 57 percent illuminated and resides among the background stars of Ophiuchus, some 8° to the right of Saturn.

Wednesday, August 30

The waxing gibbous Moon makes an even better guide to Saturn this evening, when our satellite lies some 6° to the upper left of the planet. Shining at magnitude 0.4, Saturn is the brightest object anywhere near the Moon. The two lie highest in the south after sunset and then dip toward the southwestern horizon, setting shortly after midnight. When you view Saturn through a telescope this week, the planet’s disk measures 17″ across while its dramatic ring system spans 39″ and tilts 27° to our line of sight.

The Moon reaches apogee, the farthest point in its orbit around Earth, at 7:25 a.m. EDT. It then lies 251,226 miles (404,308 kilometers) from Earth’s center.

Thursday, August 31

The variable star Algol in Perseus reaches minimum brightness at 4:27 a.m. EDT. If you start watching it on the evening of the 30th (it rises in the northeast late in twilight), you can see its brightness diminish by 70 percent over the course of about five hours as its magnitude drops from 2.1 to 3.4. This eclipsing binary star runs through a cycle from minimum to maximum and back every 2.87 days.

The Aurigid meteor shower peaks tonight, with the best views coming when the radiant (which lies in the constellation Auriga) climbs high before dawn. Although this minor shower typically produces only 6 meteors per hour under optimal conditions, it occasionally performs much better. Rates six times higher than normal occurred in 1935, 1986, and 1994, and viewers recorded up to 130 meteors per hour in 2007. No one knows when the shower will burst out again, but the waxing gibbous Moon sets by 2 a.m. local daylight time, providing three hours of dark skies to check it out.

Friday, September 1

Brilliant Venus makes a tempting target all week, but the best views should come before dawn today and tomorrow. Both mornings find the planet 1° south of the magnificent Beehive star cluster (M44) in Cancer. The two make a lovely binocular sight from the time they rise around 4 a.m. local daylight time until twilight begins to wash out the cluster’s stars an hour later. Of course, twilight has little effect on Venus because it shines so brightly, at magnitude –3.9. A telescope reveals the planet’s 12″-diameter disk, which appears a bit more than 80 percent illuminated.

Saturday, September 2

Most people have never seen an object other than the Moon or rarely a comet shift relative to the background stars in real time. But the first week of September offers observers with telescopes a nice chance to see one of these rapid movers in action. Asteroid 3122 Florence — named after nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale — races past Earth this week, peaking at a rate of 9° per day. That works out to 22″, about two-thirds of Jupiter’s current diameter, every minute. The asteroid glows at 9th magnitude on September’s first three evenings and fades to 10th magnitude the following three nights. You can find it moving from Delphinus tonight into Vulpecula tomorrow and Cygnus on the 4th.

Sunday, September 3

If you look overhead as darkness falls anytime this week, your eyes will fall on the brilliant star Vega in the constellation Lyra the Harp. At magnitude 0.0, Vega is the brightest member of the prominent Summer Triangle asterism. The Triangle’s second-brightest star, magnitude 0.8 Altair in Aquila the Eagle, lies some 35° southeast of Vega. The asterism’s dimmest member, magnitude 1.3 Deneb in Cygnus the Swan, stands about 25° east-northeast of Vega. Deneb trails Vega across the sky by about two hours, and passes through the zenith at approximately 11 p.m. local daylight time.

A tale of two eclipses

A past Astronomy contributor compares his eclipse experiences.
By Ed Tant

The event called “The Great American Eclipse” lived up to its billing on August 21. Here in Georgia, the total solar eclipse cut a narrow path through the northeastern part of the state before heading out to sea off the Atlantic coast. The last time a solar eclipse was visible in the South was in 1984, when a spectacular annular eclipse traveled diagonally from Louisiana to the Chesapeake Bay. My article about that event, “Sunshow in the Southland,” appeared in the September 1984 edition of Astronomy.

Flash forward nearly a third of a century. My wife, Joy, and I traveled from our home in Athens to the small northeast Georgia town of Toccoa, where totality would last for 1 minute and 59 seconds. In 1984, the annular eclipse was at its maximum for only 9 fleeting seconds. It was a brief but amazing cosmic event that was but a preview of this year’s total eclipse of the Sun.

Toccoa is a charming town of about 8500 people that hosted an influx of eclipse viewers on August 21. Traffic jams plagued many of the roads in Georgia on eclipse day, but the highways to Toccoa were clear. Townspeople and out-of-town eclipse chasers waited patiently for the big event, which local businesses and civic groups touted as “Totally Toccoa Eclipse 2017.”

When I viewed the May 30, 1984, annular eclipse from the tiny hamlet of Maysville, Georgia, the weather that day was crisp and the sky was clear — perfect eclipse weather. In Toccoa on August 21, the weather was hot as the Sun performed its disappearing act but the sky was once again clear and blue.

During the 1984 annular eclipse, I viewed the event with a projection plate attached to a 2.4-inch refracting telescope. “Baily’s Beads,” caused by sunlight peeking through lunar mountains and valleys, were visible, as was the planet Venus in the briefly darkened face of the Sun. The celestial show was even better on August 21. The unaided eye could take in the whole performance during the moments of totality.
As the Sun winked out above the railroad station in Toccoa, the sight quickly transcended the annular eclipse of 33 years ago. In 1984 I wrote that the annular eclipse resembled a Stygian black tunnel with its entrance outlined by a ring of solar fire. This time the eclipse was total and the experience was even more profound.

During both eclipses, the sky darkened to a twilight cast, streetlights blinked on in the ersatz evening, the temperature dropped noticeably, crickets chirped, and a brilliant Venus was visible in the sky near the Sun. There the similarity ends. The totality in Toccoa was a magical, mystical and majestic experience that was both scientific and spiritual. It brought to mind the words of William Wordsworth: “ … a lovely apparition sent to be a moment’s ornament.”

From our vantage point on August 21, Joy and I marveled at the “diamond ring effect” that lived up to its name during the Toccoa eclipse. Then we beheld the silvery corona of the Sun’s super-hot atmosphere like a gleaming halo around the face of our life-giving star. The corona is invisible and the diamond ring does not occur during an annular eclipse, so people who traveled to zones of totality like Toccoa enjoyed a transient but unforgettable experience that they will treasure all their lives.

The Great American Eclipse of 2017 was cosmic choreography that left its audience both humbled and uplifted. When the total eclipse sky show returns to the United States in 2024, more large audiences of Americans will be ready for a repeat performance of an unforgettable show.

Today, August 28th, We Celebrate the Sun God Ra

Ra

Ra, Re Ra (Re)

Ra (Re) was the primary name of the sun god of Ancient Egypt. He was often considered to be the King of the Gods and thus the patron of the pharaoh and one of the central gods of the Egyptian pantheon. He was also described as the creator of everything. Ra was so powerful and popular and his worship was so enduring that some modern commentators have argued that the Egyptian religion was in fact a form of veiled monotheism with Ra as the one god. This seems to be somewhat of an overstatement, but underlines his primary position within religious texts throughout Egyptian history.

It is sometimes proposed that the pyramids represent the rays of light extending from the sun and thus these great monuments connected the king with Ra. The Egyptians also built solar temples in honour of Ra. Unlike the standard type of Egyptian temple, these temples were open to the sunlight and did not feature a statue of the god because he was represented by the sunlight itself. Instead the temple centred on an obelisk and altar. The most significant early solar temple is thought to be the one erected in Heliopolis, sometimes known as “Benu-Phoenix”. Its location was thought to be the spot where Ra first emerged at the beginning of creation, and the city took its name (“Iwn”) from the word for a pillar.

History
Ra was an ancient god, but not the oldest of the gods; the first references to Ra date from the Second Dynasty. However, by the Fifth Dynasty he was a powerful god who was closely associated with the pharaoh. The Pharaoh was already seen as the embodiment of Horus and so the two gods became linked, sometimes as the composite deity Ra-Horakhty (“Ra (is) Horus of the Horizon”). Ra also came to be associated with Atum (the creator god of the Ennead in Heliopolis) as Atum-Ra. By the Fifth Dynasty the pharaoh was referred to as the son of Ra and the name of Ra was incorporated into the throne name of every king from that point onwards. Many Old Kingdom pharaohs built sun temples in which to worship Ra.
Ra-Horakhty (Re-Horakhty) copyright Guillaume Blanchard

The Middle Kingdom saw the rise to prominence of Amun of Thebes. Although Ra kept his association with the pharaoh, he was to some degree absorbed by Amun as Amun-Ra . However, the priests of Amun became very wealthy and influential and so some of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom chose to elevate Ra in his stead, perhaps partly because he was already closely associated with the pharaoh. For example, Thuthmosis promoted Re-Horakhty as his favoured god while Amenhotep III took the epithet “the dazzling sun” and named his wife’s pleasure boat “the Aten Gleams”. His successor (and probable son) Akhenaten went one step further and rejected Amun and many of the other gods in favour of The Aten (a solar god).

The worship of the Egyptian God Ra was at its peak during the New Kingdom. Many of the tombs in the Valley of the Kings (dating from this period) included depictions of Ra’s journey through the underworld over twelve “hours” or stages. In the fifth hour, Ra dies and is reunited with Osiris in the underworld, but in the twelfth hour he is reborn as the scarab (Khepri). Sun temples were again constructed during the New Kingdom (although those of the Ararna Period are dedicated to the The Aten).

Amun-Ra was also popular in Nubia and was the chief deity of the Nubian Kingdom of Napata during the Twentyfifth Dynasty. The Greeks associated Ra with Zeus and so he remained popular during the Ptolemaic Period. However, after this point Egypt was governed by a series of foreign rulers who were not associated with the god of the pharaohs and so his popularity declined.

Associations with other gods
Ra was often described as the father of the gods. He was sometimes thought to be married to Hesat or Hathor although the latter is usually referred to as his daughter. As his worship was pre-dated by that of some of his “children” (such as Hathor and Horus) it seems likely that he took on this role when he was associated with the creator god Atum.

According to the Pyramid Texts, Ra (as Atum) emerged from the waters of Nun as a benben stone (an obelisk-like pillar). He then spat forth Shu (air) and Tefnut (moisture), and Tefnut in turn gave birth to Geb (earth) and Nut (sky). Ra tried to separate Geb and Nut by placing Shu between them and decreed that Nut could not give birth on any day of the calendar. However, Thoth won an extra five days from the moon so that Nut could give birth to Osiris, Set, Isis, Nephthys and Horus the Elder.

It was thought that Ra “died” or was swallowed by Nut every evening as the sun dipped below the horizon. He travelled through the world of the dead by night and was then reborn in the morning (making Nut both his granddaughter and his mother). At sunset he was linked to Horakhty (Horus on the Horizon) and Atum and at dawn he was linked to the scarab beetle, Khepri (“the Emerging One”) and Nefertum

Ra-Horakhty-Atum was associated with Osiris as the manifestation of the sun at night. When Osiris was murdered by his brother Set, he became the God of the Underworld. Thus the Pharaoh was the son of Ra who ruled as the living Horus and who became Osiris on his death.

According to another myth, Ra ruled on earth as Pharaoh until he became old and weary. The people had lost respect for him and no longer obeyed his laws and so Ra decided that they should be punished. He sent his “Eye” to teach them a lesson, but then had to arrange to get her drunk to prevent her killing everyone. Once the danger had been averted, Ra decided it was time for him to leave the world to Horus ( who took his place as the king) and travel across the sky on Nut’s back.

The Magickal Day of Monday

Monday is the day of the moon itself, and it’s a day that’s connected to lunar colors like silver, white, or even a pale blue. Metals and gemstones like silver, pearl, opal and moonstone all come into play today.

There are plenty of deities associated with the moon – Thoth and Diana for instance – and herbal correspondences include many members of the mint family. Utilize wintergreen or peppermint, as well as catnip, comfrey, sage and chamomile in your workings.

When it comes to Monday magic, because of that lunar connection, it’s a good time to focus on workings related to childbearing and family life, purity and virginity, healing, wisdom, and intuition. Do a little bit of self exploration and work on developing your intuition – learn to trust your gut. Celebrate birth and life, and make some magic to fix what is broken.

The Witches Guide to Monday

In the word Monday, we can see part of the word Moon. In the romance languages such as Italian or Spanish, this day of the week is called Lunes and clearly relates to the word lunar. On Mondays, a variety of magick may be worked. Because Monday centers on the energies of the Moon, things like dreams, feminine energy, health, success in spiritual pursuits, domestic matters, and things of family origin are especially important this day.

Mondays are best for love magick and anything concerning home or family, thus old saying, Mondays child is fair of face, which seems clearly to relate to the themes of love and health.

Angels of Monday are Gabriel, Arcan, Missabu, and Abuzaha. Arcan is known as the king of the angels of air and the “ruler” of Monday. Abuzaha (Abuzohar) serves Monday, and is very responsive to invocations and ritual magick. Missabu is a ministering angel of Arcan.

Check whether the moon is waning or waxing to determine what your spell will be. During waning moons, do spells to rid yourself of obstacles or for wisdom and protection. During waxing moons do magic for increase of any kind or to draw something into your life.

On Mondays, the best hour to work is moonrise. Get this information from your local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac.

Witchery, Magick and Enchantment for Monday

Think for a moment on all of the witchery, magick and enchantments that you have discovered. Don’t be afraid to adjust spells to suit your own specific needs. Any gentle, illusory, and dreamy charms and spells can be enhanced when you work on the day of the week that is dedicated to the moon. Mondays are a fantastic day to boost your psychic abilities and to tune in to your intuition and empathy. It also gives you the opportunity to work with a different lunar phase each and every Monday, which means in one month you could work four different types of moon magicks on Mondays. How’s that for adding to your repertoire? You are going to have mad skills in no time at all.

So light up those lunar scented candles and add a little mystique to your outfit by wearing an enchanting lunar color. Wear your sparkling silver jewelry and maybe add a pair of dangling silver earrings or a pendant shaped like a crescent moon. Create lunar potions and philters; make a dream catcher and give it as a gift to someone you love. Burn some sandalwood or jasmine-scented incense today to inspire the glamour and magick of the moon. Slice up a favorite variety of fruit that is in season for a snack or share it with your love and enjoy his or her lunar and romantic qualities. Brew up a cup of chamomile tea, enchant it with a little moon magick, and relax and get a good night’s sleep.

Most importantly, get outside tonight and watch the moon for a while. What phase is she in? What color was the moon as she rose? Why not start a journal and write down at what location the moon rises and sets for a few seasons? This is a great way to teach you to tune in and to become more aware of the moon and the influence that she pulls into our lives. Try calling on Selene for her magickal assistance, and call Thoth for wisdom and strength. Get to know the Norse Mani and the Latvian Meness. These gods of the moon have plenty to teach, and if you allow their influence to cycle through your life, you’ll receive many blessings. Be imaginative, and create your own personal lunar magick and witchery. Go on….the moonlight becomes you.

The Witches Spell for Monday, August 28th – To Break the Powers of a Spell (against you)

Items that you will need in order to perform this spell:

1 large black candle
Cauldron or large black bowl

Ritual: Place the candle in the large black bowl or cauldron, affixing it with droppings ofanother black candle. The candle should be tall enough to extend a few inches above the rim.

Fill the cauldron to the rim with fresh water, without welling the candle’s wick. Deep breathe meditate, clear your mind and light the candle. Visualize the suspected spell’s power as residing within the candles flame. Sit in quiet contemplation of the candle and visualize the power flowing and growing within the candle’s flame. As the candle burns down, its flame will eventually sputter and go out as it contacts the water. As soon as the water has extinguished the flame, the spell will be dispersed. See the spell power explode into dust. Pour water in a hole in the ground and bury the candle.

Celebrating Legends, Folklore & Spirituality 365 Days a Year for Aug. 28th – Volturnalia

This is the feast day of Volturnus, the Roman God of the river and change of seasons. The origin of the God is obscure, and most of this cult died out by the late republic. As a God of the seasons, he had his own priesthood and was regarded as the father of water (an important aspect of a bountiful harvest). Little is known of his origins other than he may have been equated with Eurus, the Greek God of the Southwest wind.

Your Gift to the World – Post Eclipse Energy Update

With the solar eclipse energies still rippling in our consciousness and indeed impacting the world in a profound way, it’s time to reassess where we stand and what’s ahead.

Most likely, you have noticed subtle or even major openings during this rare eclipse cycle. Some of you may simply feel more energy flowing, or a renewed enthusiasm for moving into new territories. For some, the eclipse impact is more of a knowing that life just got an upgrade of some kind. Another possibility is that you feel a new level of intensity and perhaps a distortion of time. Continue reading to better understand what these things mean and how you can fully utilize the blessings of this eclipse doorway of opportunity.

Post Eclipse Energy Update

Feedback I’ve had from people who work with me 1-1 or in global courses are sharing some astounding breakthroughs and welcome surprises unfolding during this gateway. In one case, the person said she finally got a green light on a project seemingly stalled for quite a while. In another case, the person shared how jubilant he has felt, a welcome experience after feeling discouraged or simply apathetic in recent times. Another person mentioned quitting her job and opening a business she’s wanted for a long time. Still others are commenting about how the energies are quite different, in a good way, even if they can’t quite define what changed.

When Time Isn’t Clock Time

An odd thing happened to me here this morning involving time. When I came into my office, I noticed that all of the battery operated clocks had stopped overnight. They stopped at different times, too, showing me 3 different times! While it’s not that unusual to have a battery operated clock stop when the battery needs replacing, the way this happened got my attention. So I inquired within to know what was going on – and here’s what I discovered.

The clocks stopping indicate that we as a collective have had a significant expansion that will allow us to increasingly embody more of our quantum selves. In quantum, we don’t operate on linear clock time. We connect with our timeless energy to create here in this physical world. Yes, we still have clocks, but we work with the minutes and hours in a much different way.

Most likely, you are already doing this – acknowledging your quantum nature and resourcing timelessness more than conventional people. In the Divine Changemakers Series I’ve offered since 2012, participants already are working with this concept in tangible and amazing ways.

What’s different now is that we have had an upgrade that will allow us to be even more in quantum. Time, already accelerated for all of us alive now, will become more fluid – allowing for enhanced potentials to create and manifest our highest purposes.

What This Means for You

Based on what I’m sharing here, consider that this eclipse doorway is the mega spiritual opening that you as a soul have been seeking and needing. I suggest taking some time over the coming days to still your mind and go within, contemplating the significance for you both short and longer term. You want to factor in both time frames, for an eclipse such as this will have ripple effects for months or even longer.

One way to tune in to the significance for you is to regularly contemplate the higher view of your soul’s incarnation. Consider your gifts and wisdom – known and outside your awareness – that you developed over countless lifetimes leading to now. These are relevant to this gateway and moving forward in the highest way.

Indeed, your gift to the world is to increasingly embody and offer your light and your wisdom. The world needs this now. How you express your light and wisdom will be unique to you. It’s not just about what you do for work or service either. It’s the totality of your active conscious presence in the world.

A part of you knows this to be true. You understand how important it is for you – as a divine changemaker – to fully embody the light and love that you are. Your inner wisdom can give you reminders and sign posts to help guide you in this next phase. Invite this help daily.  Consider that help, and what you can do with it, to be of prime importance to you as you move forward.

Express gratitude for who you are, beneath the veils of illusion, and for the privilege of being alive now for this unique lifetime.

Consider This

Consider this which I wrote on my Facebook page after the eclipse, tuning into what it means for you personally. Allow these words to give you a new inspiration for living your path of light:

“Just like an eclipse experienced one day or a cactus flower that blooms overnight and lasts only a day, you can have a quantum consciousness shift in one day that changes your entire life direction. Contemplate this today and anytime you begin to lose hope about your life. Time is not as it appears. Your life path is influenced by countless unseen factors and by your soul’s long journey that brought you to now.”

Give yourself permission to move beyond conditioned expectations that were based on a linear reality – to embody your quantum limitless self.

This Week’s Astrology: Seeing Things in a New Light

Your weekly Astrology highlights for August 28 – September 3, 2017

This week you’ll want to take a second look at a choice you made — but about what? Here’s what you need to know…

Thursday, August 31: Mercury enters Leo

Mercury is still retrograde as the week begins, but he’ll change costumes moving from Virgo into Leo for the rest of his retrograde. Until September 5, the remaining lessons around Mercury will focus more on re-evaluating the decisions you’ve made around a creative endeavor or in your love life.

Saturday, September 2: Mars trine Uranus

Mars will trine Uranus on Sunday, allowing the most innovative and exciting energy to burst forward. You might have a true awakening on this day and be able to successfully launch one of your most ingenious plans.

Sunday, September 3: Mercury conjunct Mars

On Sunday, Mercury — still retrograde — will connect to Mars (also in Leo). This could be a rough day where you communicate too passionately about something and become angry. Consider whether or not this anger is rooted in the fact that you’re still living with outmoded ideas or thoughts from the past. These thoughts are not going to take you to your future.

For the Week of Monday, Aug. 28

    • General

      General Horoscope

      Mercury has been retrograde since August 12, but this week he’ll backtrack into Leo where he’ll remain retrograde until September 5. This suggests that for the final days of Mercury’s nap, you’ll be rehashing your thoughts connected to your love life. Avoid making a snap decision in either direction until Mercury has regulated his orbit. This is especially true on Sunday when Mercury crashes into Mars. You might say something to your lover that you really don’t mean.

    • Aries

      Aries Horoscope Mar 21 – Apr 19

      Don’t be surprised if one of your ex-lovers comes out of the woodwork this week. The two of you might even find yourselves hooking up again. It’ll be easy to get lost in a passionate moment on Saturday, but by Sunday, you may end up regretting anything you said or did together. Remember, just because an ex comes back into your life it doesn’t mean you should give him or her a second chance. Exercise prudence and avoid reckless actions or words you might later regret.

    • Taurus

      Taurus Horoscope Apr 20 – May 20

      Mercury backs out of your romance sector and into your home and family sector this week. This might clear up any confusion you have been feeling about your love life. Unfortunately, your family may now be scratching their heads wondering what you’re doing. They may not approve of your current decisions with someone you are dating or have dated in the past. Or, they might simply be confused about the sudden change of heart.

    • Gemini

      Gemini Horoscope May 21 – Jun 20

      You might be second-guessing your recent romantic decisions. This Thursday, Mercury slides back into your communication sector and into Leo, the sign of romance. As a result, you might either become consumed with thinking about the past and past loves, or you might feel a greater sense of confusion about the current state of your love life. Try not to make any major moves this week. Mercury turns direct on September 5. After that, clarity will return.

    • Cancer

      Cancer Horoscope Jun 21 – Jul 22

      The Moon will move through your partnership sector on Thursday and until Saturday afternoon. As a result, you’ll likely feel a stronger emotional connection with your mate on these days. Be sure to carve out time to be alone with each other in order to take advantage of this special opportunity to bond. You might even work through a disagreement the two of you had in the past about finances. Perfect!

    • Leo

      Leo Horoscope Jul 23 – Aug 22

      You might not communicate as effectively to your mate this week as you’d like to. On Thursday, Mercury retrogrades into your sign where he’ll remain out of phase until September 5. During these days, you might even become angry about your partner misunderstanding your words because you’ll be convinced that you’re coming across with total clarity. Don’t let this become a major argument. Recognize that everything will settle down in a few more days.

    • Virgo

      Virgo Horoscope Aug 23 – Sep 22

      If you have any unresolved romantic hang-ups from your past holding you back from experiencing a new and even more gratifying relationship, this is the week to pay attention to them. Consider going into therapy and working through these issues — even if it requires you to recall some uncomfortable experiences. Getting to a place of healing and closure is not only possible now, it’s necessary. You deserve to love and be loved without reservation.

    • Libra

      Libra Horoscope Sep 23 – Oct 22

      You and your sweetheart might enjoy reconnecting with old friends this week. Another possibility is that the two of you had a mutual goal, and for whatever reason, put it on a shelf with the intention of getting to it “one of these days.” This week, you might have a conversation with one another and realize there’s no better time than the present. Go after this dream together and know that the outcome will be spectacular.

    • Scorpio

      Scorpio Horoscope Oct 23 – Nov 21

      You might begin to second-guess your career direction or recent decisions concerning your professional life. If this happens, consider talking to your partner and asking for his or her perspective. There’s a good chance you’re not seeing the situation clearly and that you’re limiting yourself and your potential as a result. Alternatively, if you’re in a situation where you feel your relationship has held you back from pursuing success, this will be a good week to begin changing that script.

    • Sagittarius

      Sagittarius Horoscope Nov 22 – Dec 21

      You and your lover might plan to revisit another part of the world you once traveled to together. If so, you can look forward to a wonderfully passionate and romantic adventure. Another possibility is that you will run into an ex-lover as you are pursuing an activity designed to help you grow spiritually. This can be anything from a religious service to a metaphysical workshop. Seeing your old flame in this capacity might inspire you to give him or her a second chance.

    • Capricorn

      Capricorn Horoscope Dec 22 – Jan 19

      You and your partner might spend time this week re-evaluating a few financial decisions you made together in the past. There might not be anything negative about these decisions. In fact, you might have profited from them. The point of your discussions, however, is to consider whether or not the actions you took in the past are meant to be continued — or if it’s time for a different path. After September 5, you’ll know which direction to move in.

    • Aquarius

      Aquarius Horoscope Jan 20 – Feb 18

      This week Mercury will retrograde into your partnership sector where it remains out of phase until September 5. During these days, it’s possible that you and your mate will feel as if communication has become more confusing — or even volatile. On the flip side, you might have an opportunity to revisit a conversation you had in the past that was left open-ended. You’ll work together to resolve this. Ultimately, it will strengthen your bond.

  • Pisces

    Pisces Horoscope Feb 19 – Mar 20

    You and your partner might decide it’s time to re-evaluate the division of labor in your relationship. If one of you feels that he or she is carrying most of the weight and doing the majority of the dirty work, it might be time for a change. This will be a good week to literally compile a list of the daily and weekly chores you both have to do in order to run your household and relationship. If the tasks are skewed to one person, adjust accordingly.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Monday, August 28th

Aries

Aries
Aries

Today’s energies are good for getting to the bottom of a matter, dear Aries, particularly related to your work or health. However, it’s all too easy to take this a little too far with the energies active today. Try to pull yourself out of research if it’s seriously infringing on your time, as it can be addictive right now! Details can consume you if you let this happen. It can be easier to pull yourself out of compulsive thinking or activities as the day advances. The Moon’s move into fellow Fire sign, Sagittarius, helps pull you out of this kind of mental circling. You’re seeking out greener pastures tonight, and you’re likely to find them, at least on a spiritual plane. Your sense of humor returns full force.

Taurus

Taurus
Taurus

You’re likely to find yourself especially relationship-focused today, dear Taurus, but things can feel a little heavy at times in the first half of the day, largely because the focus is on what’s not working rather than what’s running smoothly. We can be a little suspicious or mistrustful today, and while this can lead to some useful forms of research or investigation, you should try to catch yourself from going beyond the point of skepticism and into trickier territory. People may be bringing up things you’d prefer to forget. You feel far more comfortable with others and with yourself later today. Letting go of frustrating situations comes more naturally now.

Gemini

Gemini
Gemini

The first half of the day can find you pushing an issue too far, dear Gemini, or spending too much time on inconsequential matters that bring you down. This is the nature of a Mercury-Pluto aspect that’s active today and that comes at a time when you’re overly focused on flaws and little problems, anyhow. This effectively doubles up the tense energy. What you’d be wise to do is channel some of this tension into something productive, but do watch for impatience botching up a good thing! Later today, you’re able to unwind after making the decision to stop overthinking things. The Moon moves into your partnership sector, turning your attention to your relationships, social life, and companionship.

Cancer

Cancer
Cancer

There is more intensity in your recreational or leisure time today, dear Cancer, or you’re taking things so seriously that you have a hard time unwinding and enjoying worry-free activities. A Mercury-Pluto influence active today suggests that your mind or conversations can take a negative turn a little too quickly. While some skepticism is healthy, going too far with this can hijack your day. Avoid putting too much time into resolving a problem that isn’t significant enough to warrant the effort. The Moon moves into your work and health sector later today, and while this isn’t the most glamorous transit of the month, it’s good for getting a strong sense of your practical priorities.

Leo

Leo
Leo

The tendency in the first half of the day is to focus on niggly problems and obsess over them, dear Leo. These are likely to relate to money or work matters. A perfectionistic streak can be useful if it drives you to handle an issue that’s been bothering you only up to a point, after which you’re wasting time, and perhaps more importantly, energy or spirit. Try your best to see when to call it quits. Later today, the Moon moves into fiery Sagittarius and in harmony with your own fiery sign. This transit is helpful for gaining perspective and smoothing things over. Creatively speaking, you’re in great form, and your personal appeal is excellent.

Virgo

Virgo
Virgo

There can be misunderstandings to deal with or concerns weighing heavily on your mind in the first half of the day, dear Virgo. You have a real tendency to hone in on the details that aren’t entirely right, and that can be a great thing if you work patiently on fixing things. However, this can go a little too far, and you can end up putting far too much time and energy into something that has very little significance to you in the long run, so watch for this. You’re inclined to keep busy now, but you can get tense too easily, and that’s why the easier energy of the second half of the day comes as a relief. While it can take you a little longer to turn your overthinking off, once you do, you can really enjoy some down time tonight.

Libra

Libra
Libra

Today, something doesn’t quite measure up as you had hoped, particularly when it comes to material goods or comfort items, dear Libra. You could find yourself obsessing over a small detail but be careful that you don’t let this hijack your day, robbing you of time and energy that could be put to better use elsewhere. You get help for this later today when we pass by the Mercury-Pluto influence that has us fixating on figuring something out and then the Moon moves into harmony with your sign, helping to smooth over problem areas. You’re now drawn to things that make you happy and to information that soothes or delights you. Your curiosity is big right now, and you can find friends or networks supportive.

Scorpio

Scorpio
Scorpio

The Moon in your sign pulls up all sorts of colorful feelings, dear Scorpio, although a Mercury-Pluto challenge can have the effect of adding a negative or suspicious filter to your thoughts and this can be a small stumbling block today. With this influence, be careful that you don’t stand in your own way with what you think and communicate. Also, make an effort to call it quits if a small detail is taking over your thoughts. Once over this hump, you’ll have a far easier time enjoying the good vibes of the day. The Moon moves into your stable second house, and you’re inclined to want to wind down rather than rev yourself up. This comes as a relief – it’s time for some well-earned rest.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius
Sagittarius

The first half of the day can find you reflective, dear Sagittarius, and while this is good for you to a certain point, you’re inclined to overthink things today with a Mercury-Pluto influence in play. Try not to pour too much energy and time into investigating a small problem that doesn’t have much impact on your life. If you know when to call it quits, then all the better. Decisions about money are inclined to be emotionally-driven today, so hold off on them if possible, and be a little more cautious than usual when communicating in professional or public settings. The Moon moves into your sign later today, and this can serve to uncork and enliven your emotions. It can also act as a personal “reset” button as you begin a new lunar cycle. Make it a good one!

Capricorn

Capricorn
Capricorn

A Mercury-Pluto aspect influencing the first half of the day can have you second-guessing things, dear Capricorn, and perhaps people, as well! A suspicious frame of mind, however, is not likely to serve you well today. If you can, turn your investigations to things that could actually benefit from some research rather than put too much energy into worry, concern, or negative thinking. Watch also today for some misunderstandings surrounding education, learning, communications, and transportation. As the day advances, though, you struggle less and less with getting your thoughts under control, and once over that hump, you’re in a fabulous position to kick back and enjoy yourself. The Moon’s move into Sagittarius feels carefree for today, and into your privacy sector suggests some needed downtime.

Aquarius

Aquarius
Aquarius

There is a real tendency to hone in on what’s not working in your life, dear Aquarius, or to obsess over a small detail that’s out of line this morning. However, you may end up spending too much time frustrated and strung out about things that don’t truly matter in the long run. Try to nip this in the bud as soon as possible as it’s perhaps the biggest obstacle in front of you today. Opportunities today tend to lie in research and analysis. Avoid psychoanalyzing those close to you, though, as there can be touchiness now. You can pull yourself out of a mental rut very quickly later today. For one, you’re putting a Mercury-Pluto challenge behind you, and for another, the Moon’s move into your social sector eases the pressure you’ve had to perform and allows you to unwind. Good company and humor is the solution tonight.

Pisces

PIsces
Pisces

Today, there can be moments when you could be feeling as if you are walking on eggshells around certain people, dear Pisces, and you probably are! Keep things light and positive, if possible, but if someone wants to address the deeper issues, you may not be able to avoid it. It’s not that going deep is the wrong thing now, but that timing is off and a Mercury-Pluto aspect active today tends to cast everything in an ominous, exaggerated, or negative light. Communications don’t thrive this way. So, the advice today is not to avoid the underlying problem but to delay hashing things out for a better, more accepting and productive time. Later today, you find it easier to get out of a mental funk and enjoy yourself, especially by focusing on positive work developments and the setting of goals.

If You Were Born Today, August 28

You are emotionally impulsive, playful, youthful, and charming with a wonderful sense of humor. Your need to express yourself on a creative level is strong, and it motivates much of what you do. Success is more likely if your career allows you to express your creativity freely. Your perceptive, warm, and insightful qualities are major elements of your charisma, attracting others to you spontaneously. Some level of mischief is another quality that plays a role in your attractiveness. You are excellent at negotiating and you can be very diplomatic, although when unhappy, you are inclined to call the shots. As creative and spontaneous as you can be, your need for routine is also strongly present. You are a natural teacher, counselor, and healer. Love, compassion, and understanding are qualities that you always promote.

Your Daily Horoscopes for Tuesday, August 29

Aries

Aries
Aries

You tend to have a finger in many pies right now, dear Aries. The day is likely to be busy and happy for the most part, but there is some tendency to overdo a good thing. While you’re craving a break from the routine today as the Moon encourages you to explore and discover rather than produce, you could be dealing with a rather competitive person on the job or a frustrating situation with a partner. Physical sensitivity to excesses may be an issue to contend with as well. However, as divided as you may be feeling about work and play, this is a fine time to think up new ideas and possibilities. As the Moon in your adventure sector picks up better aspects, you are more inclined to let bygones be bygones as you focus your attention on bigger and better things. The trick is to avoid shooting so high that you give up too quickly.

Taurus

Taurus
Taurus

The Moon and the Sun clash today, and so do the Sun and Jupiter in a minor way, dear Taurus, which can point to some feelings of being divided between two strong urges. Restlessness can take over at times today, and work or scheduled activities can be demanding at times. There is a tendency to either overdo and push too hard, or to avoid responsibilities altogether, and neither situation is going to leave you feeling satisfied! If you’re not feeling up to par or your mood is up and down, it’s likely to do with immoderate activity or indecision. Frustrations require a positive channel for release, and possibly a creative one with the Sun in your expressive fifth house — seek one out and go all in for best results.

Gemini

Gemini
Gemini

A Sun-Moon square can have you caught between two strong needs, dear Gemini, and a Sun-Jupiter challenge suggests something quite similar. The need for peace and quiet seems to clash with a sudden and increased desire for companionship, but perhaps you can fill both needs. There can be competitive or frustrating elements with a lover or child or related to a creative project, and it can be difficult to unwind. Certainly with the Sun now in your home and family sector you have a stronger urge and need for relaxation and some form of retreat from chaotic or demanding settings. Restlessness may lead to risk-taking or excessiveness, but neither of these matches with your overriding need for rest and familiarity, so think twice today!

Cancer

Cancer
Cancer

With the Sun in your close communications sector now, dear Cancer, this is a time for diversifying, learning, and seeking out new information, as well as for sharing your personal viewpoint. Today, the Moon and  Jupiter challenge the Sun, which can lead to some initial aggravations until you work something out. Personal projects that seem outdated or slow to advance can frustrate you, or family and home life irritations can feel a little overwhelming. You can feel behind but not quite ready to apply yourself to get back on track. Self-discipline is hard to access at the moment! There can be work to handle that limits your time spent feeling out new ideas and learning. Take it easy and look for creative solutions. Try to divide your time well and draw upon patience.

Leo

Leo
Leo

The Moon in your expressive fifth house today attempts to pull you out of your shell, dear Leo, and perhaps your comfort zone, which is an apt expression considering the Sun is currently transiting your comfortable second house! Jupiter also challenges the Sun today, goading you to get going on a project or encouraging you to explore various options and ideas. Expanding your interests can be in focus now. You can experience some impatience today as you imagine everything that could be and compare it to what isn’t the case. However, consider that mental and physical energies are mismatched for the time being. Avoid hasty decisions. Your attention span may be short, so aim to avoid taking on too much. The sooner you seek out balance, the sooner you can enjoy your day!

Virgo

Virgo
Virgo

The Moon transits your home and family sector all day, and the need for time to relax and wind down comes on, dear Virgo, although this conflicts with your drive for more activity and exploration that’s been strong since the Sun has been in your sign. While you should do your best to avoid extra strain, try to take care of your diverse needs so that you don’t neglect something altogether. It’s also important to avoid impatience and the general tendency to overdo or overreach. For you, overspending can be part of the picture. Certain issues or desires can feel pressing or urgent when in fact you would be better off waiting things out. Whims that come on suddenly are probably not reflective of your true needs today, anyhow.

Libra

Libra
Libra

The urge to connect with others can take over today, dear Libra, but with the Sun in your privacy sector, your need to tuck yourself away is equally compelling. You can be filled with ideas, but it can be difficult deciding on something to focus on with so many conflicting feelings and a bit of a chaotic atmosphere around you today. You can be feeling rather restless and perhaps pressured to accomplish something. If you are not actively pursuing an interest today, you can be a little moody. Others might stimulate a competitive urge in you. Seek out creative outlets for excess energy, and try to take part in an activity that allows you to take the initiative, but absolutely take it easy since you do need extra time to rest these days.

Scorpio

Scorpio
Scorpio

The day can pull up inner conflicts, dear Scorpio, mostly related to whether to stick with what you know or go out on a limb. The Moon in the sign after yours all day points to less urgency and more patience available to you, generally speaking. However, it competes with your need for collaboration and your social urges today. As such, there can be fluctuating energy levels and moods experienced now, and you may have a hard time expressing yourself freely. Pushing yourself too hard doesn’t get you further faster, and might even put you in a worse position (haste makes waste today). However, things are likely to smooth out if you resolve to let go of the need to compete or to push in order to grow. Be gentle with yourself and your activities and projects for best results now.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius
Sagittarius

The Moon spends the day in your sign, dear Sagittarius, and this brings you out of your shell and ready to connect with others, but also a little impatient. This tendency is particularly strong with Jupiter in conflict with the Sun and a First Quarter Moon occurring today. You’re currently in a cycle that puts goals and ambitions above most other things in your life, but today, personal and social needs vie for your attention — and so does your desire for more freedom and room to explore and experiment. There may be excessive demands or the crossing of boundaries at the heart of tensions for some of you, but for others, this is an internal conflict that is resolved once you find a way to satisfy both needs. If you are feeling unusually restless, try to direct excess or frustrated energy into a more creative field.

Capricorn

Capricorn
Capricorn

With the Moon in the sign behind yours all day, dear Capricorn, you have a high need for the kind of emotional refreshment that comes through time alone for reflection. Even so, this need conflicts with the theme of exploration and experimentation that’s with you these days and you may wrestle with whether to stick with what you know or push out of your comfort zone. There may be competitive elements in your dealings with authority figures, bosses, or parents today that compound the problem, or there could be some tensions revolving around a business project or vision that you want to move faster than it’s currently progressing, but that requires more patience. It would be a good idea to recognize the need to make changes, but it’s also important to have a strong sense of what you can and cannot do.

Aquarius

Aquarius
Aquarius

A focus on networking and friends comes into play today, dear Aquarius, but this can feel at odds with your need for more intimacy or more in-depth exploration of a topic. As well, your mind can be especially restless, and there can be aggravations related to differing viewpoints, transportation problems, or frustrated travel or educational plans. Keep in mind, however, that any problems cropping up today are likely to be quickly resolved if you focus on moderating your expectations and actions. Pressures to grow or improve can be real, but you can’t do everything in one day. Try not to rush to a conclusion. Aim to relax enough to absorb, learn, and share ideas for making improvements — an approach that is far more preferable to pushing something ahead too quickly.

Pisces

PIsces
Pisces

Tensions today tend to stem from feeling pressured to move forward too quickly, dear Pisces. As well, there can be a bit of a struggle with wanting to take care of business and go your own way or socialize and collaborate with someone close to you. The Moon spends the day in your solar tenth house, and this serves to sensitize you to others’ evaluations of you — whether or not they’re recognizing your achievements and contributions. There could be a disagreement revolving around money or the sharing of power, or if there have been complicated and imbalanced power dynamics in a relationship, this can come to a head. As much as possible, avoid rushing and aim to take things easy. Otherwise, you may end up only scattering your energies and accomplishing little at the end of it!

You might take a rather carefree or slapdash approach to the first part of the day, dear Capricorn, but by mid-afternoon, you may crave a little more order and structure.

Tarot Card of the Day

The Devil

August 28th, 2017

The Devil Tarot card expresses the realm of the taboo — the culturally rejected wildness and undigested shadow side that each of us carries in our subconscious. This shadow is actually at the core of our being, which we cannot get rid of and will never succeed in taming. From its earliest versions, which portrayed a vampire-demon, The Devil evoked the church-fueled fear that a person could “lose their soul” to wild and passionate forces.

The Devil image which emerged in the mid-1700s gives us a more sophisticated rendition — that of the “scapegoated goddess,” whose esoteric name is Baphomet. Volcanic reserves of passion and primal desire empower her efforts to overcome the pressure of stereotyped roles and experience true freedom of soul.

Promises? Promises? Are promises past due and payable? People make them to get what they want, you know. People say, “I’m sorry for what I did. I promise not to do it again.” Now is the time to take an objective look. You find insight into motivations. Promises are sacred. If single and dating, even the simplest of them reneged upon is a heads-up warning you can’t ignore today.

Erotic Tarot Card of the Day

The Judgement

August 28th, 2017

Keywords: judgment, resurrection, healing, music, good news, revelation!

Astrological Correspondence: Pluto

The Judgment card represents the judgment day or a call to awakening heralding a rite of passage. As one cycle comes to an end, we need to prepare for a new stage in our development – the future is waiting. Now is the time when past efforts yield positive results, when we can reap the rewards, when we realize that we are drawn in a new direction and recognize our true calling. In its positive meaning, the Judgment card reminds us that through honesty and true reflection we can realize where we have erred on our path. As a result, we need to forgive ourselves to regain a feeling of self-worth and accomplishment. Placed in a negative context, Judgment symbolizes indecision, a fear of letting go, remorse, regret, imbalance, and imprisonment.

The Magus

The Magus is the physical embodiment of decisive action based upon knowledge and aimed squarely at specific goals. Thoroughly Yang by nature and firmly set in the material world, he none-the-less has a powerful spiritual connection as well. His knowledge, wisdom and skill are all encompassing. He is complete. His power as a creator is unmatched on our earthly plane. He is self-aware and unafraid to act. His enormous strength gives him the freedom to act as he chooses. However, responsibility comes with that freedom. Because he is not bound to the restraints of others he must choose how to act. The question that always lies before him is should he act morally, or forsake ethics for personal gain.

As a daily card, The Magus suggest you currently possess a tremendous power and freedom to move your life in any direction you choose. In short, you can make things happen. Your true challenge at the moment is to move forward without trampling the dreams of others. Fortunately your moral fiber is strong as well, and will guide you down the right path.

Deneb is one of the most distant stars you will see with your eye alone. That’s because it’s one of the most luminous stars in the Milky Way galaxy.

Deneb is one of the most distant stars you will see with your eye alone. That’s because it’s one of the most luminous stars in the Milky Way galaxy. The exact distance to Deneb is unclear, with estimates ranging from about 1,425 light-years to perhaps as much as 7,000 light-years. Whatever its exact distance, when you gaze at Deneb, know that you are gazing across thousands of light-years of space.

The best estimates for Deneb’s distance likely are those obtained by the Hipparcos Space Astrometry Mission in the 1990s. A simple calculation from initial Hipparcos data gives the figure of 3,230 light-years, whereas the refined data yield just over 1,400 light-years. At any of these estimates distances, Deneb is one of the farthest stars the unaided human eye can see. It is so far, that the light that reaches the Earth today started on its journey well more than 1,000 years ago.

In order for us to see it at its enormous distance, Deneb must also be tremendously bright and energetic. Among the 20 brightest stars, only Rigel in Orion surpasses Deneb in intrinsic brightness. Deneb is an A2Ia star, which says that it is white hot (A2) and a supergiant star (Ia). Prof. James Kaler, using the figure of 2,600 light years as the distance, estimated a diameter 200 times greater than our sun, and about a quarter of a million times brighter in visible light. Considering its spectral classification (A2), Deneb must have a surface temperature between about 8500 to 9000 kelvins (roughly 14,800 to 15,700 degrees F).

Deneb is not the biggest star in the Milky Way. Betelgeuse and Antares, among others, are larger. But Deneb may well be the most energetic (based on the amount of electromagnetic radiation it produces) of the A-type stars. The famed North American nebula, a large cloud of glowing gas in the shape of the continent, likely is glowing in a process similar to fluorescence, energized by the radiation of Deneb.

How to see it

White Deneb is the 20th brightest star in the sky. It is one of the most remote stars visible to the eye alone. You can gaze at this faraway star starting in late spring, when Deneb rises over the northeastern horizon by mid-evening. A month later, Deneb is already in the sky by the time it gets dark. In standard time, the midnight culmination date is about August 1. Using Daylight Time, the midnight culmination is about August 15. The word ‘culmination’ indicates the star’s highest point in the sky.

Deneb is part of several famous star patterns, which overlap each other. It’s the brightest of the stars composing the constellation Cygnus the Swan, where it marks the Swan’s Tail. When you hear ‘deneb’ in a star name, it always means ‘tail.’ Simultaneously, Deneb marks the head of an asterism (a readily recognizable grouping of stars that is not an official constellation), known as the Northern Cross. Plus it is one of the three stars known as the Summer Triangle. The other two stars are Vega and Altair. Deneb is the northernmost and dimmest of the three Triangle stars, but its association with the other bright stars makes it easy to identify.

Deneb is circumpolar as seen from locations of about 45 degrees north latitude, roughly the northern tier of US states. In other words, from the northern U.S. and similar latitudes, Deneb never sets but instead circles round and round the pole star. It cannot ever be seen south of about 45 degrees south latitude. That includes Antarctica, far southern Argentina and Chile, and perhaps the far southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. Aside from that, just about anyone should have a chance to see Deneb at one time or another.

History and Myth

The name Deneb derives from the Arabic Al Dhanab al Dajajah meaning Tail of the Hen. It obviously dates from an earlier incarnation of Cygnus not as a swan but as a chicken. Like many bright stars, Deneb has been called by a number of other names, but the oddest, according the Richard Hinckley Allen, who cites the Arabic name above, was Uropygium, meaning the posterior part of a bird’s body from which feathers grow, and oddly sometimes called the “Pope’s nose.”

In Chinese mythology Deneb is associated with the story of the Celestial Princess or the Weaver Girl. In this story a Girl (the star Vega) is separated from her beloved (a cowherd represented by the star Altair) by the Milky Way. Once a year, the girl and the cowherd are allowed to meet briefly when a large flock of magpies form a bridge across the starry river. Deneb represents the bridge.

Deneb’s position is RA: 20h 41m 26s, dec: +45° 16′ 49″.

Bottom line: Information on the star Deneb, plus how to see it in your sky.

Discovering Life Balance Through the Wheel of the Year

By Lisa A. Michaels

“One of the most potent inner transformations came as I began decorating my tree for Winter Solstice with a magical theme, instead of modeling it after the décor matching trees of my youth. I brought in a living evergreen tree, which I would later plant in my yard, as a symbol of the everlasting nature of the Goddess…”

My personal journey with the Wheel of the Year began in 1988, with my soul’s first deep longing cry for the voice of the Divine Feminine. That August I had just moved from Los Angeles back to the land of rain, trees, and family on the outskirts of Atlanta where I grew up. All of my early childhood church study and later metaphysical training up to that point had only a Divine Masculine voice, and I ached for the balance that could only be found when the richness of the feminine was included.

As I searched for the Goddess, I grew frustrated with celebrating religious holidays that I no longer connected with. Books began to cross my path that spoke of the Wheel of the Year and I began working with those magical times. Eventually, a friend and I gathered a group of women together and we created a ceremony for each of the Wheel points: Winter Solstice, Imbolc, Spring Equinox, Beltane, Summer Solstice, Lughnasad, Autumnal Equinox, and Samhain. Honoring the wheel in this way for the first time actively opened me to a greater connection with nature and deeply anchored the wheel in my psyche, enlivening it in my life. I began understanding the fluidity of holding a circular/wheel understanding of time rather than a strictly linear one, and the more I worked with the Wheel, the more those revelations continued to show themselves to me.

One of the most potent inner transformations came as I began decorating my tree for Winter Solstice with a magical theme, instead of modeling it after the décor matching trees of my youth. I brought in a living evergreen tree, which I would later plant in my yard, as a symbol of the everlasting nature of the Goddess. I then connected each aspect of decorating my tree to what I wanted to create in the growing year. I hung gold balls to represent the sun, long strands of silver tinsel to represent rain, and pine cones and nuts to symbolize fertility in all my endeavors. I created ornaments with words such as love, creativity, and happiness and I tied little sparkly bundles of money to the branches. My tree became a place of gratitude for the blessings found in my life both at that moment and for the year ahead.

My magic tree helped me to integrate my family of origin’s celebration of Christmas into a time of year that we all could celebrate with more authenticity. I started honoring the entire period from Winter Solstice through Christmas. I hosted a ceremony for Winter Solstice and then enjoyed some of the traditions of Christmas with my family. A few years later, I began holding Wheel of the Year ceremonies and celebrations in my community. The first year, six people attended Winter Solstice. Now, 15 years later, this ceremony averages well over a hundred attendees.

In the years that followed, on Imbolc, the cross quarter day between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, a group of friends and I conducted a networking ceremony. At this seasonal time we traditionally chose additional ‘seeds’ we wanted to plant in our lives for the growing season, and we applied that to our professional lives. In our ceremony, each of us spoke about our professions and shared business cards, with the intention of sowing a more abundant work season through networking for the upcoming growing cycle.

One of the most memorable Spring Equinox celebrations I co-created and participated in happened with my first women’s group. We focused our ceremony on honoring our child within. We brought pictures of ourselves as children, made a bunny cake, ate candy, blew bubbles, sang children’s songs, and laughed all evening. The upliftment we generated from that ceremony lasted for weeks.

In a large Summer Solstice celebration one year, I created a ceremony around abundance to honor one of the primary teachings of that season. One of the key elements I included in the ceremony was a fun dance called an “a-bun-dance” to call abundance into our lives. We danced all night, activating abundance, and came away revitalized.

The Wheel gradually took deep root in my life, and as I worked with it personally I also began facilitating it in workshops. Then a couple of years ago, when I was doing research for another subject, I made a key discovery. I found out that in ancient China, people interested in observing nature placed a pole approximately 8-feet tall in the ground and measured the amount of shadow and light created by the sun over the course of a year. The resulting pattern from these measurements became one of their most sacred symbols – the yin/yang. The sun actually creates the symbol in shadow and light over the course of a year. While I knew the patterns of light and dark changed, I had never seen it as so balanced. You can see on the symbol the movement of the sun as its most extreme dark time in the Northern Hemisphere, Winter Solstice, brings forth the light cycle and as the most extreme light time, Summer Solstice, subtly gives birth to the dark part of the cycle once again. Also, the yin/yang shows the two places where the light and the dark fall into complete balance when the equinoxes occur.

Understanding where this powerful symbol of balance came from assisted me in more deeply understanding the Wheel of the Year and how energies flow throughout the life cycle as well. The cycle of the Wheel and the cycle of life take the same journey– starting with the dark, fallow time in winter as the earth rests and rejuvenates, moving to the gradual warming of the soil with the light of the sun until it heats enough for planting in the spring, then moving into the full brightness of light during the summer growing time. Then, the light gradually recedes to the fall harvest, and finally diminishes until the crops die and the earth settles in for its period of dark winter rejuvenation once again. For most of us, the cycle of life follows this same pattern as we gestate in the womb’s darkness, are born and grow from childhood into adulthood and then into our elder years, moving on to our death and our next expression.

The energy of the great wheel has shown me that too much light and outer world activity leaves little time for rest or quiet and burns out my system. A busy external life requires balance found during the darkness, the peaceful rest times. That quiet inner time creates the place where I am receptive to inner voice of Spirit, and where the seeds of my desires are planted, developed, and grown. Working with the Wheel, l have learned to appreciate the light and bright times of life that bring me into the outer world for growth, joy, and creativity, as well as those times that take me deep into my inner darkness for rejuvenation, and physical and emotional healing. I’ve connected to my to my own yin and yang cycles, my inner balance and wholeness.

The light balances itself fully over the course of a year, with time for outer world growing activity, harvest energy, and then time for deep reflection. As Earth’s seasons turn and change, I learned from nature that my life follows this same rhythm of constant transformation. Sometimes the shift from one thing to another expresses in a subtle and gradual change and sometimes it is quick and impactful. Yet the undercurrent of motion keeps the energy turning.
