Let’s Talk Witch – Just Exactly Is A Witch?

Winter Wolf Mother Just Exactly Is A Witch?

What is a Witch? A witch is any person who practices magick. Witchcraft is considered a practice, craft or even an art form. It’s important to note that not all witches are Wiccan. A witch can be a person of any faith who practices magick. Learning about magick and witchcraft might be why you’re reading this book; to learn about witchcraft, magick, and Wicca. First, you’ll need a brief history of witchcraft.

Those with knowledge have been either highly regarded or feared. Those who had knowledge that was dangerous to those in power have been labeled all sorts of things to instill fear in the populace to ensure their disposal. This had been the case for most of our past.

You may have learned about the Witch trials in Salem. This was one such case of those in power using their authority to label a boogie man. As was the inquisitions burning of Witches in Europe. The Church needed to blame a boogie man for the plague.

Witches haven’t always been viewed as negative. In certain cultures, those who practice magick have been highly regarded. Such as in ancient Egyptian and Viking cultures.

Even your local pharmacist or doctor would have been considered a witch 1,000 years ago for the knowledge they possess. The knowledge of the healing properties of herbs was the norm for witches or the local village wise person.

Monday Is Ruled By the Moon

Winter beginMonday Is Ruled By the Moon

This day of the week is dedicated to the moon and all of her magic and mystery. Mondays are for women’s mysteries, illusion, prophetic dreaming, emotions, travel, and fertility.

Some suggestions for Monday enchantments would include:

*Getting outside and looking for the moon in the heavens. Sit under her light and absorb a little glamour. Call on the moon goddess Selene for practical help in magical issues.

*Invoking the god Thoth for wisdom and insight

*Empowering your silver jewelry under the light of the moon. Wear moonstone or pearl jewelry today to add a lunar and magical shimmer to your outfit. Be mysterious and subtle and wear moon-associated colors such as white, silver, and blue.

*Working spells for safe travel with a simple moonstone

*Gathering bluebells, jasmine, gardenias, or white roses to create a little garden witchery with the flowers that are associated with the moon

*Setting up a lunar Tarot spell today to increase your psychic powers

*Eating a lunar fruit such as a melon to be healthy, serene, and at peace

*Brewing up a cup of chamomile or mint tea and enchanting it for sweet dreams and restful sleep

Moon Lore

A halo around the moon foretells bad weather or an unwelcome guest.

Full Moons are good for divination and crystal-gazing.

Souls of the Dead, no matter where they have gone are able to make contact on the three nights of the full moon (the night before, the night of, of the night after).

Some folks say that the fifth night of a full moon is good for conceiving a child.

A red moon predicts a day of high winds.

Misty moons promise the coming of rains.

The moon clear and beautiful presages excellent weather to follow.

Lottery numbers dreamed or thought of during the New Moon are very lucky.

A Daily Ritual for Greeting the Moon

13. WB Tierfreund-GruppeA Daily Ritual for Greeting the Moon

The best way to develop your own personal relationship with the Moon is to interact with it directly, every day. Try integrating this brief ritual into your daily life for the entirety of one lunar cycle.

This is especially useful for those who are just starting to get acquainted with Moon magic, Wicca, or any other Nature-based spiritual path. It can take as little as two minutes, or longer if you like, depending on when you’re able to work it into your schedule from day to day.

You will need to know when to expect the Moon to be visible in your area in order to plan. This information can easily be found online, and you can also refer to the rising and setting times chart.

For best results, stand outside under the Moon and gaze directly at it. If this isn’t possible, look at it through a window.

Truly look at it. See if you notice any new details about its exact shape, its shadowy features, and its changing image as it disappears behind passing clouds, then reemerges.

Even if it’s raining, you can still get a general sense of where the Moon is in the sky, so aim your focus there. If the Moon simply isn’t in the sky at any point when you’re awake, close your eyes and visualize it—as it appears in its current phase— as clearly as you can.

Spend some time silently communing with the lunar energy and when you feel ready, say the following words (or compose your own). If you’re unable to do the ritual in private, you can say them silently.

“Today/ tonight I greet you, Moon, with joy.
Thank you for your divine light, your Goddess energy, your sacred power.
I open myself to your mysteries and welcome your eternal wisdom.
So let it be.”

Magickal Applications for Mondays

LES LOUPS BLANCSMagickal Applications for Mondays

Monday is named after the moon. The Latin term for Monday is Dies Lunae (“moon’s day”); in the Old English language, this day was Monandaeg; in Greek, it was Hermera Selenes. All of these different names and languages translate to the same thing: the “day of the moon.”

Working with the different phases of the moon is an important skill that takes a bit of time for Witches to learn. So why not cut to the chase and experiment with the day of the week that is dedicated to the moon in all of its magickal energies and aspects?

Magickally, Monday encourages the lunar energies of inspiration, illusion, prophetic dreams, emotions, psychic abilities, travel, women’s mysteries, and fertility.

The Witches Guide to Monday

WinterThe Witches Guide to Monday

In the word Monday, we can see part of the word Moon. In the romance languages such as Italian or Spanish, this day of the week is called Lunes and clearly relates to the word lunar. On Mondays, a variety of magick may be worked. Because Monday centers on the energies of the Moon, things like psychism, dreams, feminine energy, health, success in spiritual pursuits, domestic matters, and things of family origin are especially important this day.

Mondays are best for love magick and anything concerning home or family, thus old saying, Mondays child is fair of face, which seems clearly to relate to the themes of love and health.

Angels of Monday are Gabriel, Arcan, Missabu, and Abuzaha. Arcan is known as the king of the angels of air and the “ruler” of Monday. Abuzaha (Abuzohar) serves Monday, and is very responsive to invocations and ritual magick. Missabu is a ministering angel of Arcan.

Check whether the moon is waning or waxing to determine what your spell will be. During waning moons, do spells to rid yourself of obstacles or for wisdom and protection. During waxing moons do magic for increase of any kind or to draw something into your life.

On Mondays, the best hour to work is moonrise. Get this information from your local newspaper, astrological calendar, or almanac.

Two Faced Janus

The month of January derives its name from that of the Roman god Janus, the god of beginnings whose name is in turn linked with the latin word ianua, “a door.” As the deity who presided over doorways and gateways, Janus was envisaged as having two heads, one facing forward and the other looking backward, with which to observe any coming and goings: one of his names was therefore Janus Bifrons, or “Two-headed Janus.” January is the month in which we similarly look back at the old year, while looking forward to the year to come.

The Power of Two

Absorb the power of two on this second day of the month of two-headed Janus. This number can represent the two sexes and duality, but also balance. If you want to formalize a loving partnership with someone this year, you could string two ringson a necklace and wear them close to your heart.

Shigoto Hajime (Japan)
BENTEN

Theme: Luck, wealth, beauty

Symbols: Boats, dragons, guitars, snakes, saltwater

About Benten: As the Japanese goddess steering the New Year’s Treasure Ship, Benten is a perfect figure to call on for financial improvements this year. She is the only goddess of luck in Japan and is referred to as queen of the seas and patroness of gamblers. Japanese women invoke her to bring beauty and fortune into their lives. Benten is depicted as riding a gold dragon, playing a biwa (guitar), and sending out white snakes with her missives. Her robe bears a jewel that grants wishes.

To Do Today: To welcome Benten’s prosperity into your home, sprinkle a little saltwater on the threshold today. Or, to generate beauty within and without, soak in a bath of Epsom salts while listening to guitar music.

The Shigoto Hajime festival honors the beginning of the work week in Japan, where it is believed that good omens for work begin today. If you want to get a peek at how your employment will fare this year, try divination by dice (a traditional gambler’s tool). Hold one die in your hand, ask for Benten to provide a sign, then role it. The results can be interpreted as follows:

(1) a negative omen
(2) feeling torn between two good options
(3) a good omen
(4) financial security
(5) not much material change, but improvements in interoffice relationships
(6) an excellent omen; roll again. If you get two more sixes, Benten’s treasures will be yours!

About the Month of January

winter wolvesAbout the Month of January

January starts the year with a plethora of fun, frolicsome festivity. The new year in particular is celebrated by at least 170 nations. The month gets its name from Jana, a moon goddess, which explains the abundance of water-related observances this month (in esoteric traditions, the moon represents the water element). It’s also named for Janus (Jana’s husband), the gatekeeper of heaven, who sees the past and future. This couple oversees the year’s beginning by offering you refreshed perspective and hope for a better tomorrow.

In terms of energy, January focuses on beginnings. It’s a time for personal renewal, starting any beloved project, and sustaining those things already in progress. Magick for health, protection, and prosperity is particularly augmented by working during this month.

The Sky This Week for January 2 to January 8

WolvesThe Sky This Week for January 2 to January 8

By Richard Talcott

Monday, January 2

The waxing crescent Moon stands between Mars and Venus in this evening’s sky. Notice the brightness difference between the two planets. At magnitude 0.9, Mars glows less than 1 percent as bright as Venus.

Tuesday, January 3

The Quadrantid meteor shower reaches its peak this morning. And, with the waxing crescent Moon setting before 10 p.m. local time, observers with clear weather will have ideal conditions. Under a dark sky, viewers can expect to see up to 120 meteors per hour — an average of two per minute. The meteors appear to radiate from a spot in the northern part of the constellation Boötes. This region climbs high in the northeast as dawn approaches, which makes the hours after midnight the best for viewing.

Wednesday, January 4

Earth reaches perihelion, the closest point to the Sun during its year-long orbit, at 9 a.m. EST. The two then lie 91.4 million miles (147.1 million kilometers) apart. It surprises many people to learn that Earth comes closest to the Sun in the dead of winter, but the cold weather in the Northern Hemisphere at this time of year arises because the Sun lies low in the sky.

The Sun is in the news more than once today. Although people in the Northern Hemisphere experienced the shortest day of the year two weeks ago (at the winter solstice December 21), the Sun has continued to rise slightly later with each passing day. That trend stops this morning for those at 40° north latitude. Tomorrow’s sunrise will arrive a second or two earlier than today’s. This turnover point depends on latitude. If you live farther north, the switch occurred a few days ago; closer to the equator, the change won’t happen until later this month.

Thursday, January 5

First Quarter Moon arrives at 2:47 p.m. EST. Our satellite rises in the east around noon local time but doesn’t become prominent until the Sun sets around 5 p.m. By 6 p.m., it appears due south and nearly two-thirds of the way to the zenith. The Moon’s half-lit orb then lies among the background stars of southern Pisces.

Friday, January 6

Jupiter dominates the morning sky in early January. The giant planet rises before 1 a.m. local time and climbs nearly halfway to the zenith in the southern sky by the time twilight begins. Jupiter shines brilliantly at magnitude –2.0 and shows a disk that spans 36″ when viewed through a telescope. A small scope also reveals the planet’s four bright moons, though you may have to hunt for one of them this morning. The shadow of volcanically active Io starts to transit Jupiter at 5:24 a.m. EST, and the moon itself begins to cross the planet’s disk at 6:37 a.m.

Saturday, January 7

The variable star Algol in Perseus appears faintest at 12:30 a.m. EST tomorrow morning, when it shines at magnitude 3.4. If you start watching it immediately after darkness falls, you can see it dim from its peak brightness (magnitude 2.1) to minimum and then rise back to maximum all in a single night. This eclipsing binary star runs through a cycle from minimum to maximum and back every 2.87 days, but the drop from peak brightness and subsequent rise lasts only about 10 hours. Algol appears in the eastern sky after sunset and passes nearly overhead around 8 p.m. local time.

The dwarf planet Pluto is in conjunction with the Sun at 2 a.m. EST. The distant world then lies on the far side of the Sun from our perspective and can’t be seen.

Sunday, January 8

Although Mercury passed between the Sun and Earth in late December, it already has returned to view before dawn. This morning, you can find the inner planet 9° above the southeastern horizon 30 minutes before sunrise. Shining at magnitude 0.2, it should show up through the twilight glow. If you don’t see it right away, binoculars will bring it into view. A telescope reveals Mercury’s 8″-diameter disk, which appears one-third illuminated.
