Elemental Essentials for Friday: The Speaking Stick
The speaking stick is not a tool, exactly. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be a stick. (Confused yet?) The speaking stick is an object that is passed around the circle at the end of many group rituals. As it goes around, each person has a chance to speak uninterrupted for a few moments, and everyone else in the circle simply listens. It is a time for words that come from the heart and calm acceptance.
It can be amazingly moving and empowering. (How often in your day-to-day life does anyone actually stop and truly listen to what you have to say?) The speaking stick can be an actual stick or it can be a large feather, a stone, a shell, or anything else that can be passed from person to person. What is important is that everyone respects the “stick” and what it symbolizes-a moment out of time for each Witch to speak and be heard.
