Magickal Activity for January 12, the Day of Compitalia
The Lare Shrine for Household Protection
Items needed: One small wall shelf; a figurine to represent the Lare; a small dish; one white votive candle in a glass holder; a sprig of Rue; a stick of sandalwood incense and ash catcher; a small bowl of salt; a glass of water.
Hang the shelf in the kitchen at eye level. Place the Lare, dish, candle, and sprig of Rue on the shelf.
On the first Saturday morning following the full moon of January, consecrate your shrine as follows:
Begin by placing three pinches of salt into the glass of water. Dip the sprig of Rue into the salt water and sprinkle the mixture over the shrine while you say:
May the power of salt and water combine,
To bless and consecrate this sacred shrine.
Light the candle, and the incense stick while you say:
I now beckon the spirits of the hearth and the home,
To make your presence to me now known.
Bless and protect all that you can see,
For this I shall reward you, so mote it be.
The shrine has now been activated. Each morning offer the Lare a piece of your food. Or decorate your shrine with seasonal flowers and foods. Light the candle and the incense, and thank the Lare for his protection.
