A Dust Devil on Mars
Image Credit: HiRISE, MRO, LPL (U. Arizona), NASA Explanation: It was late in the northern martian spring when the HiRISE camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spied this local denizen. Tracking across the flat, dust-covered Amazonis Planitia in 2012, the core of this whirling dust devil is about 140 meters in diameter. Lofting dust into the thin martian atmosphere, its plume reaches about 20 kilometers above the surface. Common to this region of Mars, dust devils occur as the surface is heated by the Sun, generating warm, rising air currents that begin to rotate. Tangential wind speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour are reported for dust devils in other HiRISE images.

Earth Sky News for Dec. 25th: First full moon on Christmas since 1977

First full moon on Christmas since 1977

This month, the December full moon falls on Friday, December 25, 2015. For Earth’s Western Hemisphere, it’s the first full moon on Christmas Day since 1977.*

We won’t have another full moon on a Christmas Day until 2034.

A 19-year cycle of the moon is the reason. Amazingly, the moon’s phases recur on (or near) the same calendar dates every 19 years. This cycle – known as the Metonic cycle – happens because 235 returns to full moon almost exactly equal 19 years.

So, in other words, the phases of the moon realign (or nearly realign) with the same calendar dates every 19 years. We just missed a full moon on Christmas 19 years ago; instead, the full moon fell on Christmas Eve. It was December 24, 1996 at 20:41 Universal Time, or UT.

But two Metonic cycles ago – 38 years (or 2 X 19 years) – the full moon fell on Christmas Day. That full moon happened on December 25, 1977 at 12:49 UT.

Astronomically speaking, the moon is only full for an instant – at the moment that it’s 180o opposite the sun in ecliptic longitude.

This month, that happens on December 25, 2015 at 11:11 UT. At United States time zones, that translates to 6:11 a.m. EST, 5:11 a.m. CST, 4:11 a.m. MST or 3:11 a.m. PST.

Although the moon turns full at the same instant worldwide, the clock reads differently by timezone. On a worldwide scale, the full moon actually comes at all hours around the clock. See the worldwide map below. The full moon takes place before sunrise December 25 in North America, noon in Europe and Africa and after sunset December 25 in eastern Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Moon cycles are not commensurate with the calendar, which is based upon the seasons – not the lunar cycle. Therefore, one year from now, the December 2016 full moon will not fall on December 25.

In any year, the phases of the moon take place about 11 days earlier than in the previous year. For instance, the December 2016 full moon will happen on December 14, 2016, and the December 2017 full moon will fall on December 3, 2017.

The moon will look plenty full tonight as it lights up the nighttime from dusk till dawn. Look for the full-looking moon to rise opposite of the setting sun at early evening. The moon will shine highest up for the night around midnight and then will sink low into the western sky as dawn colors the sky.

*Note: For most of the world’s Eastern Hemisphere (Asia, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand), the last Christmas full moon happened in 1996. In 1996, the full moon occurred on December 24 at 20:41 Universal Time … December 25 in those places.

Bottom line: The December 25, 2015 full moon is the Western Hemisphere’s first full moon on Christmas Day since 1977. We won’t have another full moon on a Christmas Day until 2034. A 19-year cycle of the moon – called the Metonic Cycle – is the reason.

Additional information about Today’s Rune, Uruz

uruz : aurochs

Phonetic equivalent: u

DIVINATORY MEANINGS: passion, vitality, instinct, wildness, sexuality, fertility, the unconscious, primitive mind, irrationality, shamanic experience, rite of passage

MAGICAL USES: to strengthen the will, increase sexual potency and energy; for hunting

ASSOCIATED MYTHS & DEITIES: Ullr, Loki, Odin (as shaman)

ANALYSIS: The aurochs was a species of wild ox, similar to a bison, that was once found all over Europe, but which became extinct sometime in the 17th century. They were said to be slightly smaller than elephants, and had horns as long as six feet, which believed were highly prized by the Germanii as drinking horns. Paintings of aurochs have been found in Neolithic caves, and it believed that the aurochs hunt had some significance as a rite of passage for a boy entering manhood. The aurochs is the epitome of the wild animal, as opposed to the domesticated cattle represented by fehu.

Uruz is the rune of the God of the sacred hunt and his shaman/priest. Following the kind of mundane, day-to-day survival represented by fehu, it is the first recognition by mankind of the divine in nature, and his first attempt to control it through the use of sympathetic magic. It also represents an awareness of death and our own mortality, which may well be the only thing that truly distinguishes us from other animals. The energy of this rune is raw, powerful, and distinctly masculine, in the sense that it is first pure, elemental fire. The boy who has killed the aurochs has just entered manhood, and has therefore been initiated into the first level of the mysteries – the awareness that the source of life is death.

Your Daily Tarot Card for December 25th is Judgement

Tarot Card of the Day

December 25th, 2015
What has traditionally been known as the Judgement card, sometimes entitled Resurrection, represents the great reunion that the ancients believed would happen once in every age. This was the time when souls are harvested and taken Home to their place of origin, outside the solar system. Then the World is seeded with a batch of new souls and the process starts over.

>From a modern point of view, this great reunion — which includes every personality that you have ever been and every soul that you have done deep work with — reunites to consciously complete the process. In a way, we symbolically celebrate this returning to center every year on our birthday.

In personal terms, the Judgment cards points to freedom from inner conflicts, and so clear a channel, that the buried talents and gifts of past incarnations can come through an individual in this lifetime. This card counsels you to trust the process of opening yourself, because what emerges is of consistently high quality. You can effortlessly manifest as a multi-dimensional being, and assist in evoking that response from others.

The Christmas Day Moon brings rare blessings

Rick Levine

Our subconscious minds are activated by the emotional Cancer Full Moon that makes a rare Christmas Day appearance for the first time since 1977. It’s fitting that our dreams overflow their boundaries like the ocean at high tide. But inner worries may be pitted against outer responsibilities as we strive to keep up appearances. Thankfully, the Capricorn Sun illuminates our family and tribal traditions in these darkest of winter nights.

This Full Moon is blessed by messenger Mercury’s smooth trine to jovial Jupiter that encourages us to see the positive potential in everything and everyone. Unfortunately, the magnifying lens of expansive Jupiter can also promote extravagance. Events in our lives may seem more significant than they actually are, yet the passage of time will help us put these days into perspective. Although we’re capable of blowing things out of proportion, at least we’re falling on the side of hope rather than fear.&

In these times of intense planetary stress, a magical Mercury-Jupiter trine favors frivolity and adds a joyous overtone to the music of the day. It also serves to remind us that good will toward our fellow humans goes a long way to creating Peace on Earth.

Keep reading to see how this rare Full Moon will impact YOUR world…

Aries Horoscope (March 21 – April 19)

Your entire life path seems up for grabs while the Cancer Full Moon brightens your 4th House of Home and Family, causing you to wonder how to balance your domesticity with your place in the world. You’re trying to figure out how much emotional safety you need before you attempt to reach your goals. Asking important questions can propel you into action. Although others might see you as acting too aggressively, do whatever it takes to get back on track. Using your powers of concentration empowers you to thrive in a situation that anyone else would call unwinnable.

Taurus Horoscope (April 20 – May 20)

Loved ones come to the rescue, encouraging you to shrug off any self-limiting thoughts. Although you might be insecure about your ability to communicate while the hypersensitive Cancer Full Moon shines in your 3rd House of Information, your words can produce a powerful impact. It’s not what others say about you that matters the most; the critical component is how you feel about yourself. Nothing is likely to bring you down if you continue to cultivate a healthy self-esteem.

Gemini Horoscope May 21 – June 20)

Your thoughts might be moving so fast that you can’t keep up with every idea. You may have a very sensible plan in mind, but you can still ruin your chances of realizing a goal if you diffuse your energy. The Cancer Full Moon’s presence in your 2nd House of Values is a cosmic reminder to focus on what is most important and allow the trivial matters to fall away. The truth is you have your limits just like anyone else. Don’t talk about your dreams until you find the right audience. Taking yourself more seriously encourages others to do the same.

Cancer Horoscope (June 21 – July 22)

You expect people to acknowledge and respect your desire for emotional safety. The evocative Full Moon spotlighting your sensitive sign might send you over the edge, prompting you to worry that your intentions are misunderstood. However, your needs may be based upon old insecurities — and no one can fix this if you fear rejection or change. You can’t solve this dilemma overnight, but discussing your concerns with someone you love helps you feel more hopeful about the current circumstances. A burden is much lighter once shared.

Leo Horoscope (July 23 – Aug. 22)

You really want to hold up your end of the bargain but the Cancer Full Moon is sneaking around in your 12th House of Secrets, prompting you to struggle in ways no one else notices. You know there are specific things you can do to help those you love, but you’re already too busy trying to fulfill your previous commitments. You can’t do everything you planned, yet your high expectations make it difficult for you to let go. Nevertheless, everyone will appreciate your generosity if you don’t promise more than you can deliver. Love is the gift that keeps giving back.

Virgo Horoscope (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)

You fully intend to accomplish your goals, even if it temporarily means that your needs come first. However, everyone can tell that you want some space because actions really do speak louder than words. But the introspective Cancer Full Moon highlights your 11th House of Friends, encouraging you to retreat into your cozy cocoon for a while. Nevertheless, a social context is still the best place to demonstrate your generosity of spirit. Compromise is key to making everyone happy, including yourself.

Libra Horoscope (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)

Knowing what’s best is not a simple task, even if the current issues seem vaguely familiar. You might not want to put up with the same level of domestic-related stress while the moody Cancer Full Moon floods your 10th House of Authority. If you are withholding your feelings, take a deep breath and release them out into the open. Just remember to be kind in your delivery process, even if a power struggle ensues. Ultimately, others will appreciate you going out on a limb to clear the air if you are just as anxious to listen as you are to speak.

Scorpio Horoscope (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)

Internal frustration seems to intensify while direct communication helps to dissipate the energy. However, the emotionally powerful Cancer Full Moon rocks your 9th House of Truth, making it nearly impossible to disengage from a disagreement until it’s resolved. Endless fighting doesn’t lead to peace of mind; take your old wounds out of the picture and examine the situation from a fresh perspective. If you can create meaning in the midst of the current chaos, then everyone emerges as a winner.

Sagittarius Horoscope (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)

You won’t run from your feelings, even if you wish you could walk away from an unpleasant situation. However, your current passion prevents you from just dropping an issue that’s important to you. Although you have realistic expectations, the protective Cancer Full Moon illuminates your 8th House of Deep Sharing, cautioning you to withhold some of your darker emotions. Proceeding with patient persistence prevents encountering disappointment in the immediate future. Your unwavering optimism saves the day.

Capricorn Horoscope (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)

Your acute sense of reality may be tested as you confront one of your most fundamental fears. The needy Cancer Full Moon stimulates your 7th House of Others, raising concerns that a relationship might draw you into an emotional abyss. More than anything, you don’t want to fall victim to irrationality as you attempt to stay on the safe path of logic. Thankfully, you can step beyond your concerns to participate in the holiday festivities and still land safely back on Earth in the days ahead.

Aquarius Horoscope (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)

You might not feel so self-assured because the supersensitive Cancer Full Moon lights up your 6th House of Service, filling you with angst about your current role. But keeping your emotions under wraps leaves everyone wondering why you’re acting more distant. Nevertheless, you don’t want to share your experiences, even if someone asks. Temporarily shifting your attention away from your feelings to something more constructive is a clever deflection. Focus on the needs of those you love as you wait for your heart to sort itself out.

Pisces Horoscope (Feb. 19 – March 20)

You may grow concerned if the uncontrollable swirl of complex emotions is moving too quickly. However, these are well-traveled waters for you Fish and it helps to remember that you are swimming in safe territory. Thankfully, the nurturing Cancer Full Moon brightens your 5th House of Creativity, inspiring you to feel more positive — even if you are also overwhelmed. Luckily, success is likely if you allow time for the right situation to gel organically, instead of pushing things ahead too soon. Trust in the magic of the universe and everything will work out fine. is a Daily Insight Group Site
