ANALYSIS: The actual interpretation of perþ has been the subject of much controversy among runic scholars. The problem lies in the fact that the initial P sound doesn’t occur anywhere else in the old Germanic language, leading to the belief that the word was imported from another language. The Old English rune poem seems to indicate that it had to do with some sort of game, leading many to interpret it as ‘chess pawn’ or ‘dice-cup’. The dice-cup meaning is particularly interesting as it not only fits the shape of rune, but also hints at such an object’s original use as a container for the runes themselves. An alternate interpretation of perþ is derived from the Slavic ‘pizda’, meaning ‘vulva’. This meaning (although obscure and somewhat unlikely) fits quite into the progression of runes up until this point, symbolizing the rebirth that follows death. Viewing it as a symbol of the womb of the Goddess, it represents the same element of the mysterious and hidden as ‘dice-cup’, but taken literally as ‘vulva’, it adds a powerful, feminine, sexual counterpart to uruz that would otherwise be missing from the fuþark.

 

However you choose to interpret the literal meaning of perþ (and again, nobody really knows what that is), the basic symbolism is that of a vessel, nurturing and giving ‘birth’, keeping hidden and secret all those mysteries, which can be uncovered only after the initiation of death. The rune is closely tied in with the idea of fate, that the road we travel, regardless of what we choose to do along the way, is predetermined from the moment of our birth. The very act of being born sets us along a course of cause and effect, action and reaction that we may choose to follow blindly, or try to divine through the runes or other means order that we may better understand the lessons we will learn. Perþ is the beginning of this process, as well as the tool for accomplishing it.

A Disruption of energy brings more Clarity. Bless it.

Most of the time I have received this card with more irritation than gratitude. Usually this card will come at a time when something I consider disturbing has occurred. I wish I could say that I welcome this message from the Angels with gratitude and gracefully begin to bless the situation around me that caused my upheaval. Instead, I seem to need to grumble a bit, even though the mere reading of the card has already caused me to smile and shift from my position. It is just so TRUE. I cannot argue with the premise that certain situations can act as a wake-up call to spur me back into alignment with my most divine self. There is a certain element of freedom in the awareness that my blessing the situation will cause it to vibrate at a higher frequency. To bless means to “confer energy upon.” When we bless something, it brings more Divine Light and Love into the circumstance. It also gives us the opportunity to ask for a Creative Solution if it seems so dire that we can’t see our way through it. The Divine always offers a solution inherent in every problem, as long as we raise our frequency to match our desire. Our prayers act as a beacon to call to us the energy that we want to experience. Those who have had near-death experiences report seeing brilliant streamers of light shooting off the earth as people pray. They were even shown the angels waiting to fulfill those prayers. That is their job. This is very reassuring information for me. So when discordant situations arise in my life, I am committing to remember to bless the situation NOW, thus bringing some beautiful light into it. I also want to be grateful for the clarity that comes to me when I am shown what I do not want to experience. It is abundantly clear that I become VERY aware during the disruptive experience what I want instead. That is a gift. My next step will be to write down my intentions for what I do want to experience and send blessing energy to this clear awareness. I will then invite the Universe to come and open the way to graceful and easy fulfillment of my prayer. And I will remember to give thanks in advance, knowing that all my needs are being met as long as I am a vibrational match for what I truly desire in my life. I can trust this process because I have seen it work so often. Only now it is even more exciting, because the change that comes when I bless the uncomfortable situation is often amazingly quick. There must have been an Angel just waiting for me to ask…

This disruption is a blessing that may come disguised as that which you do not want in your world. Sometimes knowing what you don’t want is the quickest way to knowing what you do want for yourself in all situations. Clarity of mind is necessary in order to bring about that which you would like to see manifested in every area of your life. Daily life is the cosmic educational system. Every disruption of energy has something to teach. You are here to learn and to grow from your experiences. It’s important to remember that it is possible to learn from Joy as well as pain. This is your choice. A disruption of the status quo creates change. Though change is often uncomfortable, it is intended to bring you continually closer to God. This is your larger life goal, and it’s helpful to remember this “bigger picture” when changes occur. It is often the energy from a disruptive circumstance that can propel you to your greater good. Changes are upsetting because you do not know what is coming into your life and this may cause you to feel fearful. But please remember that whatever comes to you can be a significant opportunity for spiritual growth and that you have Angels to walk with you through these changing times. You can ask for what you want. Claim the greater good that will come from the disruption that has occurred. Ask for the perfect outworking for all concerned in any situation. When you desire that which is for the highest good of all, you set in motion the forces of the universe to support you. All that you need is miraculously provided when you are in alignment with your inner being. So when upsets happen, bless them. Write them down, place your hand over the writing and imagine brilliant, divine light, which is God’s healing energy, working through the situation. Claim Divine Order and know that God and the Angels are available to assist in a perfect outpouring for your highest good. Everything can seem bleak and depressing but really it is just the Universe’s way of getting your attention and helping you to focus on what really matters and think of new ways to function on a practical level. You may feel like leaving a mate at this time, but it’s not really the best time to actually act on this impulse. Wait till this energy passes and give your Self some time to clear that negative thinking that is actually coloring your judgment at this time. If you feel this way in another week or two then begin to plan releasing this person in the healthiest, most compassionate possible way so as not to create more karma YOU will have to deal with later. What this energy is good for is giving you the ability to see what is wrong and connect to a positive, realistic way of creating change for the better. If you are still unsure about what direction to take, this energy supports consulting a person you respect, usually someone older and/or more experienced.

5/4 ~ Sun (core-self) ~square~ Jupiter (truth):

This is a powerful energy. With that comes the necessity of discernment – it provokes you to get lots of things accomplished and that’s a good thing, however, beware of taking on more than you can actually handle. Having said that now, if you need that little “push” to get some things done, this is just the energy for you. It carries with it the optimism necessary to allow you to go beyond your normal limitations. There can be a tendency toward self-righteousness with this energy, but try to make it “self-directed” and you will benefit greatly from this energy. If you turn it on others, you may have some difficulties. Be open and receptive, you never know what you may learn along the way that could really help you later.

5/6 ~ Sun (core-identity) ~trine~ Pluto (transformation):

This energy makes you want to get things done, by any means necessary and you may tend to come on a little strong – but it’s all good. The work you want to do, is work that needs to be done and in doing it and facing things head-on, you will gain insights about yourself you can apply in the future. This intense and powerful energy is transformative in nature and will provoke you to think deeply about your life; what you need, desire and deserve. You may find that some aspects of your life need to be reformed or released – go for it – this energy makes reform and release easier than usual. It’s a good time to make an impression or an impact on others, but be sure to keep it on the Highest level possible. Any actions or statements used to manipulate others for selfish gain WILL backfire on you in a big way. This is a positive, uplifting, transformative energy – use it as such to clear the debris and create the life you were born to live.

5/9 ~ Mercury (communication) ~square~ Neptune (dissolution):

This is a mixed blessing energy. On one hand, it’s good for spiritual study and giving your dreams a little energy (if your schedule permits). On the other hand, it makes for major miscommunications between people. Try to THINK before speaking, because if it’s possible to misunderstand or not ‘get it’ all together, it will happen this week. Be careful not to let “longing” for your dreams to come true, distort your judgment and mislead you into believing the illusion. With this energy, some people will deliberately deceive and others have to be careful not to be misled. Stick to the facts or stay quiet, for now. You may even be inclined to withhold information to avoid a confrontation – don’t do it. Communicate with your Self and God today, otherwise plan to be very clear in explaining yourself to others so there are no misunderstandings.

Use this meditation to sleep and dream soundly.

You will need a cup of chamomile tea and a lemon slice.

About an hour before you go to sleep, sit where you can see the moon. Drink the tea slowly. As you sip the warm tea, meditate on what you would like to bring into your life. Imagine being a source of pwoerful light like the moon. Allow the lunar energy to fill your mind, heart, and spirit. Now, gaze at the moon for a few moments, then close your eyes. Count to ten, then open your eyes and look at the moon.

Now close you eyes, take a deep complete breath, and go ten times deeper into relaxation. Count to ten and open your eyes again and look at the moon. Now, close them, breathe in, and exhale completely. As you exhale, go ten times deeper into relaxation. Count to ten and open your eyes and look at the moon.

Once more, close your eyes, take another deep breath, in and out, and go ten times deeper into relaxation. This time, keep your eyes closed. Imagine being filled completely with the light of the moon. Draw this light into every aspect of your body, mind and spirit. Feel all the parts of yourself uniting into one. A Controversary Topic, Can a Christian Be A Witch?

 

I am often asked about this controversial topic while I am at an author event, teaching a class, or speaking at festivals. At first I could not figure out what the fascination was with my answer, but as my quick, snarky answer never changes, and the reaction is always gales of laughter, I began to realize that folks just enjoyed hearing me say it. Can you be a Christian Witch? My standard answer is, “Can you be a Baptist Jew? No, you can’t. So get off the fence— it’s one or the other.”

Oh my, I have probably just offended someone. Well, I get offended when some chick in a white eyelet sundress wearing Halloween-costume fairy wings and sporting a big crucifix around her neck stands there simpering at me, wanting me to assure her that she won’t go to hell just because she is dabbling with a bit of Witchcraft. After all, she just loves faeries and magick. It’s all so pretty… but she can still be a Christian, right? Don’t forget, she has lots of magickal books; they are so cool. Plus she has seen every episode of Charmed. Good grief.

In my opinion, no, you cannot be a Christian Witch. Why? Because Witches are following a polytheistic religion. We believe in and worship more than one god; we believe in the god and the goddess and the many faces thereof. We believe in karma, in reincarnation, and that our actions in this life are important. We are not “forgiven” for any misdeed; instead, we know that we are responsible. Witches work hard on maintaining their magickal neutrality. We embrace the sacredness of life and of nature, communing with spirits and believing that prophecy and visions are, in fact, not only real but a part of our spiritual rights as humans. Also, Witches do not believe in proselytizing; we do not recruit or convert others.

There is no fear in the Craft, but it seems to me there is a very real fear at the core of Christianity— the fear of divine retribution from an angry, jealous, and vengeful god. Before someone accuses me of Christian bashing, I invite you to research the history of the church’s conversion of the masses. Countries, territories, and entire races of people were converted by force or they died. Anyone who was different or worshipped differently was branded a heretic and met with an unfortunate end. There is a long, bloody, and violent history to Christianity. Even the crucifix is a symbol of torture and suffering. Roman Christian soldiers emblazoned it on their shields and banners as they moved into and conquered new territories. This was a way to advertise just what would happen to the people if they did not fall into line. Let’s be honest here, in ancient times the common folk could not read, but they understood what that symbol meant when they saw it: death by crucifixion.

And don’t get me started on the burning times, also known as the women’s holocaust. While the numbers of the victims vary from several hundred thousand to millions, depending on who you ask, it is true that across Europe many lost their lives from being accused of practicing Witchcraft. The bottom line is those atrocities were real. The torture and murder of women, men, and children all to save their souls in the name of Christianity is sickening.

Still think you can be a Christian Witch? Then again, I invite you to take a realistic and honest look at the guidelines of Christianity. Divination, visions, a belief in reincarnation, communing with spirits, any sort of magick, and, of course, the belief in more than one god and/ or a divine feminine is frowned upon most strongly, which is a nice way of say it is forbidden. There, in a nutshell, is your answer. You cannot claim to be both a Christian and a Witch when these two belief systems are in such direct theoretical opposition from one another.

I do respect other spiritual paths. We could all stand to have an open, honest dialogue with each other. However, I am standing by— and standing up— for my spiritual beliefs. As an author, I am in the unique position of having had the opportunity to meet different sorts of magickal folks from all over North America. That whole wanna-be-Witch-chick-in-the-white-sundress scenario really happened, and I get hit up with variations of this question almost daily. How would you feel if you were confronted with that on a regular basis?

While I appreciate that Witches are so popular in our culture, thanks to television and fiction, the truth is that Witchcraft is a spiritual practice— and one that should be respected, not played with. There is nothing more dangerous than a magickal dabbler. People who play with the Craft because they think it’s romantic or cool typically cause chaos. It annoys me to no end for folks to take my religious practices and turn them into what they imagine is a sort of fun hobby because they are looking for a thrill.

You do not get to have this both ways. Embrace the spirituality of the Witch wholeheartedly or stick with your own religion and stop playing with the Craft. Witches know that our spiritual path is not for everyone, nor should it be.

Irish Holiday honoring sacred wells. Put some fresh spring water on your altar today. Drink some as a prelude to any healing work or for trance induction prior to Otherworld journeying.

Fairy Day. According to Irish folklore, it is on this day that the mischievous fairy folk emerge from their hiding places. To prevent human children from being stolen by the fairies and replaced by grotesque changelings, an offering of tea and bread must be left on the doorstep for the little people. For protection against fairies while traveling (especially through heavily wooded areas or open fields), wear your coat inside out. This is said to cause them such great confusion that they are unable to cause any trouble.

Ireland: Hawthorn Month – Sacred to Goddess Sheila Na Gig, the protector of the poor. Believers hang old clothes on hawthorn bushes all month beginning on this day to avert poverty.

Greek: The fourth day of every month is sacred to the Goddess Aphrodite and the God Hermes.

Pilgrimage to St Mary’s Well – A writer for the London Times reported on 25 May 1957 about his pilgrimage to St. Mary’s Well in Culloden on the first Sunday in May, the traditional time for performing a ritual that survived for centuries. Pilgrims first threw a coin into the well, as a tribute to the spirit dwelling there, then took a sip of the water, made a wish, and tied a “clootie” or small rag to a branch of the over-hanging tree. The prayer flags were left up to be rotted away by the elements. To remove them would be to bring upon yourself the afflictions the original owners were trying to shed. St Monica – She is the Matron of Mothers, although she sounds more like the matron of martyrs. She married a pagan, a man of high temper, who made her life miserable, but eventually through her good influence, he was converted. Her son, Augustine, who was 17 when his father died, was equally a cross to bear. He was wild and dissolute, drinking too much and patronizing prostitutes. He had a mistress and became a Manichean heretic. But eventually the prayers of his mother paid off and he became a devout Christian (and a devout misogynist).
