How Spells Work

Everything in the world emits an energy vibration of some kind, with different things having different signatures. Sometimes a signature is referred to as possessing a different level of vibration. A higher level is usually considered more spiritual and closer to the gods; a lower vibration indicates something more material. These energies reach out to touch one another, forming what amounts to a giant spider web of energy that crisscrosses around the world. It also connects the physical and nonphysical worlds. (Neo-Pagan literature refers to this as “the web.”)

As everything is connected in this fashion, it is possible to have an effect on things simply by twitching the web in one place and allowing the resulting vibration to flow along the web until it reaches your goal. The web is also how we can send energy to someone or something far away from us—the strands of energy that connect all organic and living things serve as wires through which we can send our energy.

November 4th

Mischief-making Night

In northern England, “Mischief Night” is the traditional time for harmless pranks and tricks to be played by young people on their elders, who refrain from disciplining them for these misdeeds. This is a healthy celebration of the right to be different, or outside society’s mainstream, and of our tolerance of diversity of faith and belief. While the distinction between Mischief Night and Halloween has faded in most places, its origins on this night are still celebrated in some communities.

Queen Hyacinth

This is a good time to plant hyacinth bulbs, which can be used in love magick. Choose the color with your lover or intended lover, in mind, and plant the bulbs either in an indoor container or in a well-drained, sunny outdoor spot. When the fragrant hyacinth blooms in the Spring, you may use their petals in a spell.

Let’s Talk Witch – Spells Should be Cast In Harmony with the Lunar Cycle

Wiccan

Let’s Talk Witch – Spells Should be Cast In Harmony with the Lunar Cycle

Magic is done according to the lunar cycle. Spells that are done to increase things like love, prosperity, peace and so on should always be done during the full moon or the day just before the full moon. The fullness of the moon will attract abundance, so any spells done to attract good things during the full moon will put out an energy of abundance.

Spells that are done to take away anxiety, take away fear, or decrease stress should be done during the new moon or while the moon is waning. The energy of the moon during this cycle is focused on lessening so the energy of the moon will make the spell more effective. Spells done for spiritual awakening, learning, or divination should always be done only during the new moon.

If you’re not sure when you should do a particular spell ask yourself what the real purpose of the spell is. Clarify your intentions and then it should be clear what phase of the moon will help that spell be effective. You can keep track of the moon phases with a Farmer’s Almanac or just by checking online. If you have trouble keeping track of the Lunar Cycle you can make yourself a calendar and hang it on the wall so that you will always know when you should perform a certain spell.

Let’s Talk Witch – Spells Are Essential

Celtic Goddess

Spells Are Essential

A lot of people get scared by the idea of casting a spell, but really a spell is just like a prayer to a Wiccan. Instead of praying to a deity to make something happen a witch uses a spell to focus all the energy around them and make things happen. Spells can be just as powerful as prayers, and really are a type of prayer if you think about it.

Spells can be created for just about any purpose. Just don’t use spells to hurt or manipulate others. A spell can be a simple two sentence statement or can be a multiple paragraph speech. As long as the Wiccan performing the spell does it with good intentions and clear direction a spell can be powerful even when it’s short. In fact sometimes the shortest spells can be the most powerful, if there is a lot of focus behind them.

Saying spells out loud is a good way to focus on what you are doing and what you want to happen as a result. By speaking the words out loud you are announcing what you want to the Universe and putting all your energy out into the world. The ripple effects from that are what make the spell effective.

If necessary you can mutter the words under your breath but spells are better if you can announce them clearly in a powerful tone of voice. Performing spells with others will increase the amount of energy behind the spell and make it even more effective, so if you are casting a spell for something very important it is a good idea to get some of your Wiccan friends together to perform the spell with you.

Gods – OgmaCeltic God c.2015

Ogma

Celtic God

In Irish-Celtic myth, Ogma is the god of eloquence and learning. He is the son of the goddess Danu and the god Dagda, and one of the foremost members of the Tuatha Dé Danann. He is the reputed inventor of the ancient Ogham alphabet which is used in the earliest Irish writings.

In the final battle at Mag Tuireadh he managed to take away the sword of the king of the Fomorians, but had to pay with his life for this feat. His Celtic equivalent is Ogmios.

Ogma or Oghma is a character from Irish mythology. A member of the Tuatha Dé Danann, he is often considered a deity and may be related to the Gaulish god Ogmios.

He fights in the first battle of Mag Tuired, when the Tuatha Dé take Ireland from the Fir Bolg. Under the reign of Bres, when the Tuatha Dé are reduced to servitude, Ogma is forced to carry firewood, but nonetheless is the only one of the Tuatha Dé who proves his athletic and martial prowess in contests before the king. When Bres is overthrown and Nuadu restored, Ogma is his champion. His position is threatened by the arrival of Lugh at the court, so Ogma challenges him by lifting and hurling a great flagstone, which normally required eighty oxen to move it, out of Tara, but Lugh answers the challenge by hurling it back. When Nuadu hands command of the Battle of Mag Tuired to Lugh, Ogma becomes Lugh’s champion, and promises to repel the Fomorian king, Indech, and his bodyguard, and to defeat a third of the enemy. During the battle he finds Orna, the sword of the Fomorian king Tethra, which recounts the deeds done with it when unsheathed. During the battle Ogma and Indech fall in single combat, although there is some confusion in the texts as in Cath Maige Tuired Ogma, Lugh and the Dagda pursue the Fomorians after the battle to recover the harp of Uaitne, the Dagda’s harper.

He often appears as a triad with Lugh and the Dagda, who are sometimes collectively known as the trí dée dána or three gods of skill, although that designation is elsewhere applied to other groups of characters. His father is Elatha and his mother is usually given as Ethliu, sometimes as Étaín. His sons include Delbaeth and Tuireann. He is said to have invented the Ogham alphabet, which is named after him.

Scholars of Celtic mythology have proposed that Ogma represents the vestiges of an ancient Celtic god. By virtue of his battle prowess and invention of Ogham, he is compared with Ogmios, a Gaulish deity associated with eloquence and equated with Herakles. J. A. MacCulloch compares Ogma’s epithet grianainech (sun-face) with Lucian’s description of the “smiling face” of Ogmios, and suggests Ogma’s position as champion of the Tuatha Dé Danann may derive “from the primitive custom of rousing the warriors’ emotions by eloquent speeches before a battle”, although this is hardly supported by the texts. Scholars such Rudolf Thurneysen and Anton van Hamel dispute any link between Ogma and Ogmios.

*
A Proto-Indo-European root *og-mo– ‘furrow, track, incised line’ may be the origin of the stem of the name. In addition, Proto-Celtic had a causative verbal suffix *-ej– ~ *-īj-. A hypothetical Proto-Celtic *Ogm-īj-o-sogm-. This agent noun would therefore mean ‘furrow-maker, incisor’ and may have had a metaphorical sense of ‘impresser.’ therefore looks very much like an agent noun derived from a verb formed by the addition of this causative suffix to the stem *

The Irish god of writing, eloquence and poetry. Ogma was credited of being inventor of the Celtic writing systems that the Druids used for their magic. These scripts were known as Ogham.

Ogma was the son of Dagda and the goddess Danu. Some other writers say that Ogma and Dagda were brothers; in this version they were the sons of Eithne. Ogma had also being called the son of Elatha, the king of the Fomorians.

Ogma was one the seven champions in the First Battle of Moytura (Mag Tuired), but when Bres became the king of Tuatha dé Danann, Ogma was degraded into working on humiliating manual job of gathering firewood.
When Lugh went to Nuada, asking for a place to serve the king, Ogma seemed to be Nuada’s foremost fighter. During the second battle of Moytura, Ogma had killed one of the Fomorian leaders, named Indech, the son of Domnu.

Ogma had married Etain, the daughter of Dian Cécht. Ogma had a son named Caipre. Some say that he was the father of MacCuill, MacCecht and MacGrené (MacGrene), the three Danann kings who ruled Ireland, during the Milesian invasion, though other say that Neit was their father.
To the Celtic Gauls he was called Ogmios. According to both Gallic and Irish myths Ogma was a warrior god, depicted as a wrinkled old man, wearing lion’s skin cloak, carrying a bow and club. The Romans considered Ogmios as the Celtic equivalent of Hercules (Greek Heracles). They also depicting Ogimos as holding people chained to his tongue by their ears, to indicate he was the god of eloquence and poetry.

Flower Petal Spell Paper

Its time to break out the fun stuff guys! Magick User’s University is all about interesting crafts that can be useful during your travel through the world of Magick. Today, we’re going to focus on a project of making Flower Petal Spell Paper today in Spellcraft 101.
+ So what is Flower Petal Spell Paper?
Well, its a fancy name for paper with flower petals in it. There are a lot of great things you can use it for besides spellcraft, such as scrapbooking, making bookmarks, and other crafts. It all depends on how many flower petals you put in it, and exactly what purpose this paper is for.
+ Flower Petal Spell Paper +
The Flower Petal Spell Paper is great for spellcraft and writing, as well as looking generally beautiful for any papercraft you have in mind.
+ Materials +
Flower Petals (in any color!)
Any kind of paper (construction, newspaper, etc)
Scissors
Duct tape
Window screen (or anything like that)
Towels
Bowls
Blender
The Flower Petal Spell Paper will be used for a particular endeavor in particular: making earth spells. For these particular spells, you write out an endeavor, wish, or project that you would like to see come true or flourish, and then you bury the small spell paper in the ground in efforts to promote your desires! Its a great gift for someone, or just to keep for yourself. Below I’ll have a few suggestions written out in case you would like to present them as gifts.
+ One: Time for the hunt! Even as witches, most people are more likely to spend their time indoors (I know I do). So, time to go out and take a walk! Collect as many flower petals as you can! In efforts to help with my enthusiasm, I took a few plastic cups with me (along with my darling Lore), and we set out on the journey of collecting flowers.
Beautiful red flowers! I fell in love with the the moment I saw them!
The mighty Lore Sagemaker, forced to pick cute yellow flowers. ♥
+ Two: After collecting your bounty, head back. Cut out a square of screen, and fold the duct tape around the edges to form a stable frame. If you want, you can use something like popsicle sticks to make a frame and tape around that.
+ Three: Once you’ve made your screen, tear up some paper and stick it in the blender. Cover it with enough water to saturate the paper. And then! Whirl away, until its a nice, thin porridge/oatmeal like substance.
As for me, I actually don’t own a blender, so I got to watch Lore use one of her top-notch cooking utensils and beat away. She did a good job.
You’ll actually want it a bit more thin than the end result here… but this was as good as we were getting without a blender. Anyway, it will work just fine, but the paper won’t be as fine and thin (though I was surprised at how nice it turned out regardless). At this point, mix in the flower petals with the soupy substance and get it nice and mixed in there. If you have anything else, like seeds, this is the time to do it as well! You can also add a hint of cinnamon in order to make it smell nice!
+ Four: Using a spoon, spoon some of the mixture onto the frame. Smooth it out, using the back of the spoon to press out some of the water through the screen. Make sure to push any of the mixture off the frame and onto the screen.
+ Five: After getting the mix onto the screen, very, very carefully tip the screen over onto a towel (mixture down). Put another towel over and and press down on it to get rid of the excess water. Hold it for at least thirty seconds, continually dabbing. Once you’ve cone that, very slowly peel the screen away, until on the towel you have this!
Pretty neat, huh? Continue this process until you’ve finished with all of the paper.
+ Six: Once you’ve finished, transfer them carefully to a cookie sheet and leave them to dry outside. And you’re done! Now you have it! Gorgeous flower petal spell paper!
So what do you do with it afterwards?
If you’re planning on giving it as a small little gift to a friend, something general and heartfelt is always a great way to go. You can even write them instructions on a separate sheet of paper, telling them what to do with the spell paper. Tear the sheets into thin strips. On the paper itself, in ink, you can write either a notion, or a spell! Listed below are a few ideas. Think about what the person you are giving it to might need and attempt to cater it to them!
Good Luck
Sweet Dreams
Fortune
Good Health
Make a Wish
“Bring _____ (their name) fortune and prosperity, By this spell so mote it be.”
“Buried deep into the earth, Grow the seeds of wishes true.”
You can present it to them anyway you’d like afterwards. The project is a bit of work, but when you see the end results and how beautiful it looks, it will be worth it! ♥

Awaken the Magick! Spell

To help you awaken your inner magick you can cast this easy spell.

Start by gathering together the following items:

  • an empty notebook (you will call this your Magickal Diary)
  • and a blue pen

Then, on the day or evening of the moon (Monday) take a bath or shower first to help cleanse and purify your aura and after you get dressed in some clean comfortable clothes, find a quiet place in your home where you can be undisturbed for at least half an hour and place the notebook and pen onto a table or a flat surface and sit down nearby.

Close your eyes for a few moments while you take deep relaxing breaths and imagine that you feel and see a white light surrounding you and filling you with a feeling of peace and happiness.

Next, open your eyes and then open the first page of the notebook and with your pen draw the shape of a square or rectangle on the page and look into the square while you imagine that this is a doorway and it is opening up and you are stepping through the door.

The door to the magic within you is always open, if you are open to yourself and the magic of the world around you...

Let yourself relax and feel happy and uplifted as you imagine that your mind is stepping through that doorway into a sunny garden that is full of your favorite plants and flowers, (you may even see some fairies and unicorns there too) and let yourself stay in that enchanted place and have fun imagining for a while as you say these words,

“To the left and right of me, Above and below me, I awaken the spirit of nature and magick within me.”

When you feel you are ready, let your mind come back through the door and close the notebook and say

“I am a wonderful child of the Universe, and so will it be.”

When you finished your spell, you can write the words, My Magickal Diary, or whatever words you like on the front cover and keep this book as your enchanted workbook for spells and wishes.

Invocation – What is it?

INVOCATION – WHAT IS IT?

How?

Invocation is not so hard. You don’t need to be a rocket scientists for that,
You need just a sparkle of imagination and most of all, You need to relax, to
feel Your internal peace and power. This is usually made with meditation or some
other relaxation method. I made a unique way to get this peace. Make some sort
of copy of Your happy emotions (love, peace, happiness, wisdom,…). Than use
this like some sort  of defense shield. Whenever You feel angry, just think of
something or someone You loved with all Your heart and just let Yourself, that
the love flood every piece of Your body and mind. With peace You can invoke the
Goddess of Light.

When?

waxing moon for spells of invitation or increase
-Examples: spells to find love or get a job
waning moon for spells of banishing or decrease
-Examples: spells to end loneliness or financial problems
full moon for:
-maximum power
-coven work

What for?

The spells are often made acording to zodiac circle. Every sign has its
traditiomal needs, like:

-Aries
battle, beginnings
-Taurus
money spells, sex magic
-Gemini
communication
-Cancer
psychic work, lunar magic
-Leo
leadership, solar power
-Virgo
purification
-Libra
balance, work in law or for justice
-Scorpio
power
-Sagittarius
honesty, expansion
-Capricorn
overcoming obstacles
-Aquarius
healing
-Pisces
psychic work, endings
But, often spells are not made for traditional purposes, but for custom.

Who?

This is very large question. It depends of what You believe in (I believe in
Goddess, but for spells I use gods also). You can use Gods, Goddess, spirits,
heroes, etc.
More is in the Gods/Godess section.
Examples:

Isis: Protection, magic
Thoth: Reincarnation and magic
Aphrodite: Love and passion

Invocation
Invocation can be as simple as they can get, like this:
O,____________
O, Isis
Just a little more complex:
Mighty ________, invoked by me
Mighty Thoth, invoked by Me
or very complex:
Seven stars of brightest skies invoke You, _______ to seek and find to love
in might, to give, to take and nothing to break.
Seven stars of brightest skies invoke You, Ra to seek and find to love in
might, to give, to take and nothing to break.

Make Your own and make it right, with the power of the Light. Find the way
to Goddess word, as You can listen and You can heard.

WRITING SPELLS

WRITING SPELLS

Below are some steps that will help you get started when writing your own
spells. Please keep in mind that this is not the only way to write your own
spells. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to creating your own
spells. A spell comes from your heart, not some universal law.

Your Spell’s Rough Draft

This is the construction process of a spell.

Define Purpose- Decide what it is you would like to accomplish with this spell.

Locate Correspondences- Look for various herbs, gemstones, colors, etc that
correspond with the spell and look for other supplies you will need as well
(e.g. working tools) .Also decide how you will use the correspondences during
the spell. This could be anything from simply placing them on the alter in a
given position to creating a charm or amulet.

Casting the Circle- Decide what technique you will use to open and close your
circle.

Calling the Quarters / Inviting the God and Goddess- Decide what technique you
will use to call the quarters (the elements) and invite the God and Goddess.
(Note: this step or part of this step does not always have to be included in
your spell)

Meditation- Decide on a meditation technique you would like to use during your
spell.

Your Spell’s Final Draft

This is the sequence in which you may follow when casting a spell.

Set up the Alter
Casting the Circle
Call the Quarters and Inviting the God and Goddess
Correspondences (place correspondences on the alter, light candles, etc.)
Stating the Purpose (this can be done through rhyme, although it doesn’t have
to)
Charging the Charm/Amulet (if you choose to have a charm, this is the time to
charge it)
Meditate
Thank the Quarters and the God and Goddess
Snuff out Candles
Close the Circle

How to do Magick

How to do Magick

Very, very carefully

There are certain factors that must be in your mind when you do magick.

1. The Wiccan Rede?

2. The rule of three?

3. Have you been asked to do the magic?

4. Are you ready to take away another’s will?

5. Are you ready to pay for what you are going to do?

Magick is something that one does not take lightly. Do not let the movies or TV be your guide at this time. For everything we do there is a price to pay.

So say you, that you will only do “good magick.” Therefore you have nothing to worry about. You have a friend that has been ill for a while and you decide to help them. You cast a healing spell and your friend does not get better, but instead dies. You know whose fault that is? You – the caster.

First by casting the spell without being asked goes against the Rede. Secondly you are taking over a persons will. You have no idea what medication had been given to your friend. You stick your two cents in and wind up counteracting the good the medication might have done. Now what do you thing will happen to you? Remember the rule of three. Good returns good three times, evil returns evil three times. Feeling comfortable with this, are you?

Great, you will stay away from healing, but what about that great looking Guy or Gal at the office. You would like them for yourself. Before you cast, think, which of the five items above are you willing to accept?

All of a sudden casting does not seem like fun and games. In the future you will learn that casting is not to be taken lightly. It is not a gift, but a responsibility, and one not to be taken lightly. When you are willing to accept the responsibility and results of casting them should you get involved.

Cook Book Spells

There are many books on the market with spells in them. Spells, unlike recipes are not some thing that you can get out of a book. In my Grimore are spells I have cast and that have worked for me. I can hand the book over to you and all you would have is a book of lovely words. That’s all! A spell is part of the individual casting.

It is not necessary for a spell to be spoken in rhyme, but it helps. By writing your spell in rhyme it forces you to give though to what you are doing. You MUST be very specific with what you want a spell to do; else it can come back to you.

Self Gain

Never cast a spell that will benefit you with riches, or rewards. It is not our place in the universe to be the richest people in existence. But don’t get me wrong. If you are unemployed there is nothing with casting a spell to gain employment. But be careful here too. Your competition for the job may be unemployed also.

For a Simple Healing the cost is…

Wiccans and Witches DO NOT have a sliding fee schedule for the magic we do. As a matter of fact we DO NOT charge. To charge is to belittle who and what you are. We give from our hearts. For the most part the Wiccan community cares for those around us. We love the Earth and all she stands for. We care for animals and humans alike. Being a Wiccan / Witch is NOT a business.

Let’s Talk Witch – To Cast or Not To Cast

Let’s Talk Witch – To Cast or Not To Cast

That Is The Question

The first essential element of spellcasting is deciding whether or not to use a spell at all. After all, you don’t always need a power tool; some jobs are just as easily done with a simple screwdriver. So before you get started, you need to decide if a spell is really the right tool to deal with the problem at hand. Take a long, honest look at the situation, and see which one of these categories fits you best and the task at hand:

When to cast a spell:

When you have exhausted all the mundane options but still need to achieve a goal (the spell not only puts your intentions out into the universe but is also a way of asking for help).

When the spell will affect only you (such as casting a spell to open yourself to love).

When do you know what you want and are willing to do the work required to get it (like putting in applications at appropriate places after asking for the perfect job).

When only good can come from the spell.

When not to cast:

When there is a simple solution that doesn’t require magick (you need to lose five pounds, haven’t tried a diet yet, and have plenty of time).

When casting a spell would interfere with free will (casting a love spell to get a particular person, for instance).

When you aren’t sure what you really want to achieve (if you are uncertain of the end results you want, it is hard to truly focus enough will to make a spell work).

When there is the possibility of causing harm to yourself or to others (remember, harm none).

If you are certain that the best solution for the situation is casting a spell, then it is time to get down to work and craft yourself the perfect spell to get the job done.

Spells and Spell Casting

Spells and Spell Casting

When talking about spells and spell casting you can get into some sticky situations. No other subject can cause so many divisions in the pagan community.

It seems that there are as many different ways and ethical practices as there are gods and goddesses in the universe. If you take into consideration that spells and the way you cast them is what makes them effective it begins to make perfect sense why.

In effective spell casting there are three very important ingredients that you must have, resolve, focus, and comfort.

Without resolve there can be no change, it is your commitment to an action that is the basis of a spell. You have to really want it! Without a genuine intention to effect a change you are casting magic to the wind, cluttering up an otherwise flowing universe. Spells without resolve can be detrimental undirected or worse misdirected energy is free to change unknown situations.

Make sure you really want the change you are trying to make. When you get it, it’s yours. This is where a little divination would come in handy to make sure you will be truly happy with the outcome of your spell.

Focus, direction, or meditation, how good can aim? The focus of your spell casting is as important as the resolve to make a change. If you can’t see the broad side of a barn you will not have the ability to effect a change on it. You have to be able to taste it! If you physically build a dog house, you have to have some idea what it will look like when you are done. A spell is like a dog house, if you don’t know what it’s supposed to look like when your done, you could very well end up with a failed attempt or worse. You have to belive it’s possible. If you can’t belive that something is possible it’s not. Anything is possible if you truly belive it can happen. If you belive you can make a change and you know how the change will take place and you can picture the end result of your spell, you are there.

Comfort is easy, if you can’t ethically accept the responsibility for your spell or there is something that bothers you about what you are trying to do or how you are going about it, don’t. You are the power in your spell, you are the creator and the control.

Poor comfort will mess up your focus and your resolve. Without comfort you will have a very poor spell at best.

Written Spells

by Skye Alexander

In earlier times, written spells were the province of a few wise men and women who were more literate than the majority of the populace. In many cultures, the written word was revered as a gift of the gods, especially among the Egyptians and Greeks. For this reason, written spells came to be considered more potent than verbal ones.

One of the oldest and best-known written spells is the word Abracadabra, customarily used to banish sickness. In ancient Chaldean texts, Abracadabra translates as “to perish like the word.” The letters in Abracadabra were written in the form of a descending triangle on parchment, which was then laid on the inflicted body part. Then the paper was removed and stuck in the cleft of a tree. As time and the elements destroyed the paper, the magick would begin to work. This whole process is an example of magickal symbolism, sympathy, and similars — the word disappears into nothingness; the paper disappears into nothingness; and, therefore, the disease or illness takes the hint and follows suit.

When you write with a pen or pencil, you activate the acupressure points in the thumb and fingertips. These points induce relaxation and strengthen the connection to the subconscious mind. Thus, writing contributes to the power of a spell because it helps to center your mind and engages your imagination.

Written words, affirmations, incantations, and sigils are often included in contemporary spells. A written intention might be slipped into a talisman or amulet. Spells are sometimes written on paper, then burned to release the intention into the universe. Witches might write a spell a set number of times — the number corresponds to the spell’s objective (e.g., six times for joint endeavors, eight times to attract financial security). The color of the ink, the shape of the paper, even the addition of aromatics to the ink or paper may contribute to the overall effect of the spell.

Why go through all this fuss? Because witches believe that the more dimensions magick has (with sensual dimensions being especially significant), the better the results will be.
