A Sharp View of the Sun

Explanation: Here is one of the sharper views of the Sun ever taken. This stunning image shows remarkable details of a dark sunspot across the image bottom and numerous boiling granules which appear like kernels of corn across the top. Taken in 2002, the picture was made using the Swedish Solar Telescope operating on the Canary Island of La Palma. The high resolution image was achieved using sophisticated adaptive optics, digital image stacking, and other processing techniques to counter the blurring effect of Earth’s atmosphere. Currently a sunspot group is crossing the Sun that is so large it can be easily seen by the cautious observer even without magnification.

Tisdale 2 Rock Formation on Mars

Explanation: Why does this Martian rock have so much zinc? Roughly the size and shape of a tilted coffee-table, this oddly flat, light-topped rock outcropping was chanced upon a few weeks ago by the robotic Opportunity rover currently rolling across Mars. Early last month Opportunity reached Endeavour crater, the largest surface feature it has ever encountered, and is now exploring Endeavour’s rim for clues about how wet Mars was billions of years ago. Pictured above and named Tisdale 2, the unusual rock structure was probed by Opportunity last week and is now thought to be a remnant thrown off during the impact that created nearby Odyssey crater. The resulting chemical analysis of Tisdale 2, however, has shown it to have a strangely high amount of the element zinc. The reason for this is currently unknown, but might turn out to be a clue to the history of the entire region. Opportunity is already finding rocks older than any previously studied and will continue to explore several other intriguing rock formations only now glimpsed from a distance.

There is a significant series of sign changes that can get minds, hearts and muscles working more effectively this month. Cerebral Mercury reenters its earthy home sign Virgo on September 8 and will stay there until September 25, finally pulling us out of the remaining clouds of its retrograde period that began in this sign in early August. Sharper thinking and analytical skills enable us to recognize hard-to-see patterns and details that may have been escaping attention for the past month or so. The Sun is also in Virgo to reinforce these favorable patterns but which also remind us not to criticize ourselves or others without having solutions to the problems we raise.

On September 14, sociable Venus enters her airy home sign Libra to provide graciousness and a sense of fair play. This shift serves relationships with a greater degree of objectivity that helps us recognize others’ needs and treat them as equals. Venus, though, runs into tense alignments with volatile Uranus on September 17 and potent Pluto on September 18 that can make for some rocky partnership days. While sudden breakthroughs and pressures can lead to radical changes in status, attitude and expectation, if you want to hold onto what you’ve got, avoid over-reacting to surprises and provocations. The Sun’s shift into Libra on September 23 will continue to put attention on partnerships with some explosive moments likely between September 25 and 28. Yet even the most challenging personal issues can be handled when minds are open to change and hearts are courageous enough to face deeply rooted fears.

Bravery, fortunately, may come with warrior Mars’ transit into bold Leo on September 18. This outgoing, dramatic and expressive combination is ideal for having fun and being creative. Still, heroic Mars in Leo forms a favorable 60-degree sextile to this Sun-Moon conjunction, providing passion, confidence and a willingness to take on tough challenges that can turn a partnership crisis into a relationship revival.

Explanation: Look through the cosmic cloud cataloged as NGC 281 and it’s almost easy to miss stars of open cluster IC 1590. But, formed within the nebula, that cluster’s young, massive stars ultimately power the pervasive nebular glow. The eye-catching shapes looming in this portrait of NGC 281 are sculpted columns and dense dust globules seen in silhouette, eroded by intense, energetic winds and radiation from the hot cluster stars. If they survive long enough, the dusty structures could also be sites of future star formation. Playfully called the Pacman Nebula because of its overall shape, NGC 281 is about 10,000 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. This composite image was made through narrow-band filters, but combines emission from the nebula’s hydrogen, sulfur, and oxygen atoms in a visible spectrum palette. It spans over 80 light-years at the estimated distance of NGC 281.

Pictured, behind this darker cloud, is a pileus iridescent cloud, a group of water droplets that have a uniformly similar size and so together diffract different colors of sunlight by different amounts. The above image was taken just after the picturesque sight was noticed by chance by a photographer in Ethiopia. A more detailed picture of the same cloud shows not only many colors, but unusual dark and wavy bands whose origins are thought related to wave disturbances in the cloud.

Rover Arrives at Endeavour Crater on Mars

Starting three years ago, NASA sent a coffee-table sized robot named Opportunity on a mission rolling across the red planet’s Meridiani Planum to find out. Last week, it finally arrived. Expansive Endeavour crater stretches 22 kilometers from rim to rim, making it the largest crater ever visited by a Mars Exploration Rover (MER). It is hypothesized that the impact that created the crater exposed ancient rock that possibly formed under wet conditions, and if so, this rock may yield unique clues to the watery past of Mars. Pictured above, the west rim of Endeavour looms just ahead of the Opportunity rover. Opportunity may well spend the rest of its operational life exploring Endeavour, taking pictures, spinning its wheels, and boring into intriguing rocks.
