East: Come all spirits of air and mind,

Blessed Be

Blessed Be

Probably the most common phrase that we use in the Craft is “Blessed Be.” This phrase is possibly the major common denominator in all of the different Craft traditions.

It is something that is a unifying principle within Witchcraft and although it is the most often articulated saying we have, it seems to me to be the least understood one I know of.

When we say “Blessed Be, ” all too often it is simply new jargon, or a substitute for “Hi, ” “How are you?” or “Good Bye.” Yet, these two words comprise one of the most powerful and sophisticated sentences in the English language.

“Blessed Be” is an ultimate Zen phrase, “Blessed be that which is”; “All that is, is blessed”. We are recognizing a truth that all is inherently blessed. We are reminded that in the present moment, everything is perfect. There is nothing that needs to be changed, and nothing that needs to be improved.

In this moment, everything is sacred. Being at one with the sacred now is a blessed state indeed, and saying “blessed be” from that point of view is a potent statement of recognition of the perfection of this moment. There is no future to obsess about, and no past to regret.

There is only this moment; it goes on forever, and all is truly blessed.

Another important facet of this gem of a saying is that it is a constant reminder of our function in the Craft: We are here to bless.

Once we develop a significant relationship with Spirit, in whatever way it presents itself to us, we eventually come to recognize that what the world needs from us is our blessing. The only significant contribution we have to offer the world is blessing.

In any situation, with any person or group of people, we are here to say (and mean) “Blessed Be, ” either silently or aloud.

When we take an honest look at any problem in the world, it becomes apparent that the problem stems from a lack of blessing, and the only cure is to bless.

I know for myself, I can honestly say that anytime I have been less than loving or compassionate in my life, it was in response to a great deal of pain I was experiencing at the time.

What I didn’t need in order to turn my life around was more judgment, anger and criticism. What I needed was love and blessing.

I needed someone to say “Blessed Be” and mean it.

We are children of divinity–children of the Mother and Father, of Spirit, of God, or whatever you choose to call it. As divine children, we are here as expressions of our parents. We are here as lights in a dark world. Our function is to recognize the light and divinity in everyone else.

“Blessed Be” can also be another way of saying “The divine love in me recognizes the divine love in you”. We are here as healers of this world. Whether we take this job seriously or not will determine what direction our world takes.

We have the power to transform the world in every moment just by seeing any situation from the point of view that we are divine beings here to bring blessing.

It isn’t a question of whether or not we have the power to bless, it is a question of whether we choose to use it or not.

If we say “Blessed Be” consistently and mean it, this planet can heal very quickly.

One thing that I have learned in my life is that there is enough pain in this world. We all know what pain is. We have been to hell already; we don’t need to indulge in pain any longer in order to know we want something else.

I can honestly look at my life and say that what I really need is not more misery. I see that what many of us are doing is indulge in misery out of habit, or addiction. It takes a great deal of determination to understand that our addictions are not serving us any longer and then decide that we are going to relinquish our investment in them.

Unfortunately, like any addiction, we often wait until we hit rock bottom before we realize that we have a problem. In Alcoholics Anonymous, the first step to sobriety is for the alcoholic to recognize that they are powerless over alcohol, and that there is a higher power who can restore them to sanity.

This is what blessing is all about. Whatever our wound, the healing comes about from blessing.

If we have a strained relationship with another person, our greatest work to bring us happiness in that relationship is the honest blessing of that person.

If we have a problem with our job, the healing comes about from blessing the job, and all the people in it on every level.

The act of blessing that I describe is not an abdication of power; it is a reclaiming of power.

Some might worry that we need to protect and need to defend ourselves, and that if we are blessing all the time, it will just leave us vulnerable to attack. This worry comes from the erroneous point of view that Spirit is ineffectual. We would do well to remember that the power of love is fierce.

Spirit is intelligent. It knows what to do. When we bless the world, we are in a position of ultimate power. Just as when our physical immune system is healthy, it takes care of all the viral and bacterial activity without us needing to know what is happening.

The Craft of blessing results in building a spiritual immune system that is so strong that nothing can touch us. It is not necessary for us to carry out punishment (curses) on others in order to be safe and protected. In fact, cursing is a domain in which we leave ourselves the most open and vulnerable to attack.

Cursing is very subtle stuff. Curses aren’t necessarily consciously cast. Anytime we desire the pain and destruction of another person for any reason, we are withholding our blessing, and are by default cursing.

Resentments and grudges do come up however, and I am not suggesting that we are supposed to just suppress our feelings and pretend like we are not feeling rage when we are feeling it.

What I am suggesting however is that when we are feeling anything other than love for people that we recognize it and bring it to Spirit to heal.

This is the ultimate magic: transformation.

When we are feeling anger toward another person, we can say “Goddess, I am really pissed of at so-and-so, and want to crush their big fat head right now. Please heal this situation. Please bring me back in harmony with your compassion. Show me what I need to do in this situation, let me know what to say in order that this situation be healed.”

We aren’t denying our rage, but we are embracing our ability to move beyond it. A curse is when the rage and desire to destroy are kept within us to fester.

Curses are psychic malignancies.

Blessing is a silent art. Just because we bless someone doesn’t mean we have to have lunch with him or her.

Blessing is not about forcing our personal wills on any situation. It is simply recognizing the people and situation before us as divine, and seeing the love at the heart of whatever is going on regardless of the drama that is being played out.

We simply access the Spirit within us and ask for its will to be done in our presence. We withdraw our preconceived notions of what is supposed to happen, or what we think we want to have happen, and allow ourselves to invoke the presence of pure love.

When we are facing a problem, and we think we have tried everything, it is very important that we ask ourselves whether or not we have given our blessing. Often this is something that we have overlooked.

I can’t count the number of times I have been in the throes of misery and the one thing I have NOT tried is asking Spirit directly to take the problem and heal it for me. Once we renounce our addiction in the pain, we are transformed.

We have shifted our plane of experience from one of cursing, to one of blessing.

There is no more simple, or more powerful magical charm in the universe than “Blessed Be.”

Self-blessing

Self-blessing is a good way to make yourself feel better when you are feeling down and dispirited. Prepare some purified salt water and center into yourself. Focus on the Mother aspect of the Goddess and ask her to bless your life and your body. Dip your fingertips into the water and press them lightly to your forehead, chest, and belly.

Put the salt water down and meditate on the power of the Goddess as it is expressed within you. At the end of your meditation, pick up a vial of scented oil and daub a bit onto one finger. Lightly press that finger to your left shoulder, then your right shoulder, your belly and back to your left shoulder, saying, “I am a child of the Gods and I live under their protection.”

A pair of people generally does this. Any two people that work well together, regardless of gender or sexual orientation can do it. It can also be done by one person if they work solitary. The example that follows is done by a man and a woman simply because that is the way that I am most familiar with and feel the most empathy with. I encourage you to play with different combinations to see what works best for you. Each one will feel different.

The people that are blessing the cakes and wine should go to the altar and kneel there. The woman picks up her athame and hands the cup to the man. He places it between them as the woman raises the blade above the cup, held in both hands. Then both center themselves and connect with each other before proceeding.

Woman: Let my worship be in the heart that rejoices.
Man: And let my worship be in the heart that brings bounty to the earth.
Woman: Let there be Honor and Humility within you.
Man: Let there be Beauty and Strength within you.
Woman: Let there be Power and Compassion within you.
Man: Let there be Mirth and Reverence within you.

Woman: As the Lance is to Man,
Man: And the Grail is to Woman,
Woman: Let each find themselves whole in the other.
Man: For there is nothing greater in this world
Together: (As priestess lowers the athame into the cup) Than when the two are made one in Truth and their bounty is poured out upon the earth. (Priest and Priestess kiss to bless the union.)

If there is more than one cup to be passed, and this is recommended with large groups, split the blessed wine into all of them, leaving a bit as an offering and add more wine to fill the other cups. Leave a small amount of extra wine to bless the bread. The priest takes one of the cups and holds it for the priestess to drink, and then she returns the blessing by holding the cup for him. He should then go the south and begin his cup passing moonwise (N, W, S, E, N). The priestess will stay in the north and start her cup around as well, in order to let people take in the blessings of the gods. The cup should be passed with a hug or a kiss and a “Blessed be.”

The priest should then come back to the north and pick up the bread, kneeling again by the priestess. They should wait for the cups to go halfway around so that everyone has had a chance to share the cup. When it has, she should pick up the original cup and dip her fingers into the wine, sprinkling some over the bread that the priest is holding. He tears the bread in half, handing her one half, then tears off a smaller piece and gives her a kiss saying “Blessed be” before placing the bread into her mouth. She does the same, and then moves to the south to start her half going around sunwise. She tears off a piece and gives a kiss and “Blessed Be” before giving the bread to the next person and them placing the smaller piece in their mouth. In the north, the priest does the same.

Once the bread has gone around, the cups and bread are continually passed, after breaking off a small piece of the bread for the Gods for an offering, until they are gone. Discussion of the ritual so far, past rituals, struggles of the past months and general conversation takes place. If there is to be an actual feast, it is brought out now and people can go get their own plates of food, making sure to place a small offering on the offering plate.

The offering plate and cup should be dumped out onto the earth somewhere out of the way after the ritual. Never dump one onto concrete. Running river water, if available is also a good choice for returning the offering to the earth. Many covens take up a collection at this time for food drives and charities by leaving out a collection plate and letting people donate as they can.

Dragon Blessing

This is a ritual for blessing and consecrating all your ritual tools. Whether your ritual tools are chosen specifically for dragon magick or whether you plan to use them in several kinds of magick, it is wise, as well as a nice gesture, to ask your dragons to add their powerful blessings to the equipment. The stronger the power in a magickal ritual tool, the better the rituals are worked.

This ritual is best done on a Full Moon or at bright noon. All of the tools may be consecrated at once if you have gathered them, or you may consecrate those that you have at this point. Others may be blessed as you acquire them. Any jewelry can be blessed at the initiation ceremony. Have pure frankincense gum to burn in the incense burner; a little goes a long way with gums, which tend to smoke.

Tools that you will find useful at this point are the dragon pentacle, the pentacle disk, incense burner, chalices, salt dish, sword, and wand. If you cannot drink wine, substitute apple cider, grape juice, fruit juice or soda.

Arrange your ritual area with care. It is best to set the altar in the center of your working area so that you can face the east. Light the two altar candles (black on the left, white on the right). Remember, if you are timid about using black, substitute extremely dark blue, purple or indigo.

Play soft instrumental music, if you wish. It helps to create the proper atmosphere and mask minor noises. Once the circle is cast, do not cross the boundary until the ritual is finished! You are dealing with mischievous creatures in this type of magick. Dragon power is a totally different and more unpredictable kind of magick: it can even be dangerous if you are frivolous and half-hearted about your work.

Begin the ritual by going to the east. With the forefinger of your power hand (this is generally considered the one with which you write), “draw” your magickal circle on the floor around your ritual area. Do this by pointint your finger at the floor and seeing great flames shooting from it. Move clockwise around the circle with this flame; end by overlapping it in the east. While drawing the circle, say:

“BY DRAGON POWER, THIS CIRCLE IS SEALED.”

Return to the altar. Put a small amount of frankincense on the burning charcoal in the incense burner. Point your forefinger at the burner; say,

“BY DRAGON POWER, I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Lift the incense burner and carry it clockwise around the edge of the cast circle, beginning and ending in the east. Return the burner to the altar.

Slowly pass the pentacle disk through the incense smoke, Say;

“ELEMENT OF SPIRIT, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Set the dish of salt on the pentacle disk. Circle the dish three times clockwise with your forefinger. Say:

“OUT OF THE DARKNESS OF EARTH AND SEA COMES THIS BLESSED SALT.

BY DRAGON POWER, I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Sprinkle a few grains of salt on all four corners of the altar. This sprinkling purifies the altar and may be done at any time, whether during ritual or as a cleansing if someone has messed about with your altar.

Pass the dragon pentacle through the incense smoke and say:

“ELEMENT OF SPIRIT, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

With the dragon pentacle in your power hand, go to the eastern quarter. Hold up the pentacle, facing the east. Say:

“DRAGONS OF AIR, BEHOLD YOUR SYMBOL AND ALLY.”

Moving clockwise, go to the south. Hold up the pentacle, say:

“DRAGONS OF FIRE, BEHOLD YOUR SYMBOL AND ALLY.”

Go to the west. Hold up the pentacle, say:

“DRAGON OF WATER, BEHOLD YOUR SYMBOL AND ALLY.”

Finish by going to the north. Hold up the pentacle, say:

“DRAGONS OF EARTH, BEHOLD YOUR SYMBOL AND ALLY.”

Return to the altar. Lay aside the dragon pentacle and take up the sword. Touch it briefly to the pentacle disk and pass it through the incense smoke. (You will have to keep adding small amounts of incense through out the ritual, but not enough to make breathing uncomfortable.) Say:

“SWORD OF FIRE, O (NAME OF SWORD),

BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Hold the sword for a few moments before the dragon pentacle. Put down the sword and take up the dagger. Touch it to the pentacle disk, pass through the incense smoke, and say:

“DAGGER OF FIRE, O (NAME OF DAGGER),

BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Hold the dagger for a few moments before the dragon pentacle.

For each tool set it briefly on the pentacle disk, then pass it through the incense smoke. When finished with the Call, hold the tool up before the dragon pentacle.

Water chalice:

“CHALICE OF WATER, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Wine chalice:

“CHALICE OF EARTH, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Dragon bowl:

“BOWL OF EARTH, YOU HOLDER OF LANDS FAR DISTANT AND NEAR, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOUR PURIFIED.”

Gem bowl:

“BOWL OF EARTH, YOU HOLDER OF GEMS BRIGHT AND POWERFUL, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Wand:

“WAND OF AIR, WIELDER OF MIGHT AND MAGICK, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Staff:

“STAFF OF SPIRIT, AUTHORITY AND POWER ARE YOURS, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Water bottles:

“CONTAINERS OF WATER, HOLDER OF GREAT SEAS AND RIVERS, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Gong, finger cymbals or bell:

“YOU ELEMENT OF AIR, WHOSE MUSICAL NOTES REACH TO THE DRAGON WORLDS, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Mirror:

“EYE OF THE DRAGON, YOU ELEMENT OF EARTH, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Whenever you get new supplies of herbs and oils, they can be consecrated by circling them three times with your wand and saying:

“HERBS (OILS) OF EARTH, GIVEN BY DRAGONS OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS, BY DRAGON POWER I CALL YOU PURIFIED.”

Now is an excellent time to chant and use free-form dancing. Invite the dragons to share in the raised energy and your joy of being a magician. Talk to them about your hopes and dreams. And listen to see if they have suggestions or words of encouragement for you. This is an opportunity for close friendships to be forged.

To close the ritual, take your sword in your power hand, your wand or staff in the other. Hold the sword up in salute. Go to the east and say:

“DRAGONS OF AIR, BEHOLD THE TOOLS OF MAGICK,

CONSECRATED BY DRAGON POWER,

LET US BE ONE IN MAGICK.
